Colonna ACE IT: Welcome to Derry editors Esther, Glenn and Matt had never worked together prior to the new HBO series, but quickly formed a family bond that translated into a fun and creative cutting room.  Their antics included scaring unsuspecting tourists taking the Warner Brothers tram tour past their offices.  And you know what Jack Torrance says about "all work and no play"! Developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, It: Welcome to Derry is based on Stephen King's 1986 novel It and is a prequel to the films It (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019).  The series takes place in 1962, when a couple and their son move to Derry, Maine just as a young boy disappears.  With their arrival, bad things begin to happen in the town.  Again. ESTHER SOKOLOW Esther Sokolow is a Los Angeles-based editor who specializes in genre-rich storytelling, bold characters, and projects with cinematic scope.  Esther's collaboration with IT: Welcome to Derry showrunner Andy Muschietti began on IT: Chapter Two, where she served as 1st Assistant Editor, and continued on The Flash, where she was promoted to Additional Editor. Her work bridges studio tentpoles and independent character dramas, with a focus on horror, psychological thrillers, and supernatural themes. Her early film diet of Hitchcock, classic mysteries, and silent comedies provided provided inspiration for an editor drawn to tension, timing, and the emotional weight of what's unspoken. Later, the spectacle of The Lord of the Rings sparked a love for scale and the thrill of stories that move an audience. Originally from Atlanta, she moved to California to study Film Editing at Chapman University. In 2015, she was selected as an honorary intern for American Cinema Editors (ACE), an experience that shaped her early career and inspired a commitment to both craft and mentorship. Esther now speaks on an annual panel for the ACE Internship Program and serves on MPEG's Apprenticeship and Growth Committee, supporting the next generation of editors and assistant editors. Before stepping into the editing chair, Esther worked as an assistant editor on feature films including Rampage, Bloodshot, The Guilty, Stronger, Fall, and Rememory. She also worked in-house as a VFX Editor at Method Studios, contributing to Guardians of the Galaxy and San Andreas. Her years supporting other editors honed more than technique; they taught her to listen to pacing, to performance, and to subtle story beats others might overlook. That same quiet attention now shapes her own work. GLENN GARLAND, ACE Glenn Garland is television and film editor with more than twenty years of experience in the entertainment industry. In addition to cutting IT: Welcome To Derry, other impressive TV credits include Poker Face, The Vampire Diaries, Preacher, Banshee, Stan Against Evil, and Altered Carbon. And that was by sending him a Tiffany box filled with feces, which she used to do to critics who wrote negative reviews about Ozzy's shows without being there. When she did, it was her infant son Jack's poop that would be used.She ultimately decided against it, saying, “Even that is a waste, to send [crap] to him. It's a waste because he's really insignificant. But I just thought, anybody that passes has a family… you don't do that.” (Sharon's not the first musician's wife to do that. Paul and Linda McCartney sent some of their daughter Stella's poop to a journalist who earned their trust, then betrayed them.)Going forward, Sharon says she's continuing to work on an Ozzy bio-pic and that she knows who she wants to play him. We're running the Habit series. I'm really, really excited about it, and I hope that it helps you. So, all right, the thing that inspired me. This I think I'm gonna do okay. So the, Priya Parker, who has a great book about, like, entertaining and parties, and it's just an incredible book. I've read it many, many times, and I might even listen to it again while we're on this tour, because it's just really, it's like the art of gathering, right? And I'm really big in community, and there's just so many great things about it. But she shares different weird ways that people get together, and this so this invite is called, you got an invite for the wrong party, so you come dressed for the wrong party, meaning you come dressed in a Halloween costume, but it's a birthday party, you come dressed up like it's a funeral, but it's a birthday party, you come dressed up like winning an award or in your wedding dress. I might do that for my birthday. I might wear my own my wedding dress, and then someone could wear that. How fun is this? So I'm kind of obsessed about this, because with all of our tours that we've had, it's been really hard for me to, like, have a birthday party the last couple of years. We just had a lot going on. Just haven't wanted to do it. But now with this, this invite going out, I mean, like, I might do outfit changes, you guys, I'm not even kidding. And then, @purapilates_yasmin, going out of my comfort zone to travel alone to the UK and meet my amazing mentor, Yasmeen, that was so fun. What a win that was, first of all, like you did, travel to a different country, we got to meet, we got to hang out, but you also stayed with a stranger. It's not a stranger anymore, but just like so many out of the comfort zone things, and it's just, I love that you're celebrating getting outside of your comfort zone. We need to do that more. Who wants to send in their win of them getting out of their comfort zone? Okay, so thank you for sending your wins in. Those are so fun. Send them in. They can be long. They can be short. They don't have to be like, oh my God, I have my biggest launch ever. Like, that's cool, especially if you hit a goal. We rarely hit our goals around here, and I still believe this year is super successful. So a win of mine. Well, I shared with you a win earlier this year where I took a four day weekend before a crazy travel time so I could have time off, and I was really proud of the work that we did so they could have that win, which is having four days with my friend, and while she was here, we were playing our next adventure together. And my win is hearing an idea of what we could do together, and then, like, doing something from episode one, like, literal Episode One, how does it get better than this? How does it get better than this? And so I can't wait to share what this is with you when it comes to fruition. We haven't picked our dates yet. There's a couple things that are we're waiting for, like, essentially, a Pilates piece of equipment has to get released. So I can get that Pilates piece of equipment in my house. Once it's in my house, then I can sell the Pilates equipment that I this is a duplicate of to my friend, and then my friend and I are going to this amazing like Thelma and Louise without the driving-off-the-cliff-part adventure. So I will celebrate many wins with you as I plan that trip. But I just want like, I will say, like, sometimes I'll hear ideas that require a lot more of my time, and my instant fear, like my instant feeling is, how am I going to do that? Do have time to do that? Like, that's my I instant fear, my instant thought. But instead, when, when she mentioned this, I but she mentioned she wanted this piece of equipment, and she's like, how are we going to get it? And then I was like, Well, you guys could road trip. And it was like, well, we could road trip. I'm kind of telling you the thing. And then I was like, oh, and we could do this. And then she's like, well, you could do this. I'm like, how does it get better? We could do this, and we could and all of a sudden it became this incredible adventure. And I didn't let my worry of like, how am I gonna make this happen stop me from just letting it be as big as it can be. And so for my perfectionist and overachievers in this room, I hope that you get to hear an amazing, great idea, and then you get to go and run with it. And if you haven't listened to Episode One, I highly recommend going back. Episode One is so good. Episode Three is amazing. Episode Five is great. Like our beginning catalog, I suck as an interviewer, but the guests are phenomenal. I guess I don't suck. People said I was really good, but, you know, I was being it till I see it on that. So if you want to hear that from where we are now, which is like over episode 600 but that's my win, my win is just like not letting the details and logistics stop me from dreaming super big about once in a lifetime shared experience. Lesley Logan 7:18  So anyways, now it's time for an affirmation. Brandon Christensen is a Canadian filmmaker and VFX artist whose directorial work includes Night of the Reaper, Superhost, Puppet Man, and VFX work on multiple films with a particularly close collaboration with Joe Begos on VFW, Bliss, Jimmy and Stiggs, and Christmas Bloody Christmas.In this conversation, Brandon walks through the making of Night of the Reaper, his latest film, which is a nostalgic 80's style slasher with very heavy Halloween vibes. Brandon also gets into how to consistently make films with limited resources, why he takes on editing and VFX himself, and how to achieve compelling period production design on a budget.Key TakeawaysDesign period detail around what exists.To create an authentic 1980s vibe without a big period budget, Brandon's team scouted unchanged locations, bought used furniture and TVs, and leaned on production people who could find pockets of the past.
