Beth is back on the show as we check in on her Ironman Austria preparation! If you've been following along, you'll remember that Beth had upcoming visits with Louisa (the physio), Ray Gibbs (swim coach), and Phil Burt (bike fitter). (If you missed those discussions, check out the links in the show notes!) Now that she's completed all three sessions, we sit down to discuss her experiences and how each one is shaping her training and racing. Key topics in this episode: Beth's anxiety ahead of her swim technique assessment Why Ray asked if she'd ever learned to play a musical instrument The importance of getting a bike fit before investing in a new bike Beth's newfound title as the macro absorber—and why she's essentially been riding with the brakes on until now The surprising connections between her physio visit, swim assessment, and bike fit There's a lot to unpack in this episode, and we hope you're enjoying these conversations as much as we are! Beth and I are having a great time recording them, and we're both learning a lot along the way. Hopefully, you'll pick up something new too! This week, I'm thrilled to welcome a very special guest . . my wife, Bethany Ward! Beth is training for Ironman Austria 2025, and her last long-distance was back in 2019. We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share how I approach creating a training plan for a new athlete. In this episode, we cover: Structuring a training plan after years of focusing on other events How to find the training volume sweet spot for balance and success The high-performance habits of sleep, nutrition, and stress management that form the foundation of consistent training Key steps Beth can take to improve her swimming technique and efficiency Why an early physio visit is crucial for identifying injury risks, tight muscles, and weaknesses - and how this shapes mobility and strength plans If you're preparing for an Ironman in 2025 and wondering where to begin, this episode will give you the guidance and motivation you need! Listen now and get started on the right track.

Supporters get acquainted with the course and spots for seeing your athlete. Standing around is HARD on your legs; combine walking with staying put in one place. Arrange on course spots or post-race meeting points in advance Not all race venues have a lot of options for food and drinks or going to the toilet so think of yourself as well as your athlete. Tip from coach Lucie Zelenkova: wear very bright colours so that you athlete can easily spot you. It is very easy to get lost from your fellow supporters; make a plan for rendez-vous points; especially if you don't have a phone connection. Bring a battery pack and cords/ plugs for recharging your phone. Mikhail Ivanov moved from Russia to Colorado with his wife and 9 and 1 year old children in early 2014.  He is a 36 year old triathlete who has been racing for 4 years.  He had limited  running experience and no cycling or swimming experience before he started triathlons. It’s a small triathlon community in Russia with limited warm weather for training.  With all the indoor training time he calls himself a strong “balcony rider.”  While in Russia he was able to train for Ironman Austria in his second year of racing, finishing in a time of 10:26.  In 2014 he went 10:00 at Ironman Boulder and then, after Ironman Tahoe was cancelled just minutes before the start, he went to  Ironman Chattanooga one week later and went 9:36, earning a spot for Ironman Hawaii in 2015. During the interview we talk about his training and racing experience, things he learned at other Ironmans, and how he put it all together at Ironman Chattanooga.  His target heart rate on the bike for his last Ironman was zone 2-3 using Joe Friel heart rate zones, taking in 300 calories per hour during his 5:10 ride.  His goal during the race was ‘not to slow down at mile 18’. As a result he raced conservatively, and his last 5k of the marathon was faster than his first 5k. Mikhail uses pickle juice as a concoction to avoid side stitches during Ironmans.   When he races he takes a bottle of pickle juice with pickles in it. If you’re interested in the research on cramps and pickle juice, check out this http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/09/phys-ed-can-pickle-juice-stop-muscle-cramps/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 Subscribe via iTunes

He was doing well on the swim (1h15) and bike (5h40) but the knee blew up again on the run. He strapped the leg up and pushed on with true Ironman grit and determination for a painful 55h26 marathon.
