Digital Populism Just as we were recording this podcast, the hashtag #daruratdemokrasi (democratic emergency) went viral across Indonesian social media. The alert was prompted by the latest example of Indonesia's parliament (DPR) attempting to override or block a ruling by the Constitutional Court related to the eligibility of candidates to run in regional elections. The online campaign quickly turned into calls for real action to take place on Thursday 22 August, in the form of protests at the national parliament in Jakarta and other cities across the country. This would be parliament's final sitting day before it headed into recess ahead of the November elections, and therefore the last chance for any amendments to be passed. The response on the streets by some thousands of protesters, including celebrities, filmmakers, actors and academics, was significant enough to force the DPR to pause its intervention. This effectively put an end to what was seen by the protesters as an attempt to both prevent a key rival of the Jokowi-Prabowo coalition, Anies Baswedan, from contesting the Jakarta gubernatorial election, and allow Jokowi's second son, Kaesang, to stand as a candidate. This will be seen as a victory for a grassroots movement that began with digital activism and spilled out on to the street. The question now is, will this movement be sustained, or was it just a one-off? Over the past decade, digital activism has become deeply embedded and highly professionalised within Indonesia's political and social ecosystem. In the recent presidential election, the size of a candidate's team of ‘buzzers' and their stable of social media influencers was a decisive factor in delivering voters for the major parties, especially from the increasingly important Gen Z demographic. Prabowo's landslide win was made possible, in large part, due to a re-branding of his image and targeted use of TikTok throughout his campaign. Who and what is behind these campaigns driving what is known as digital populism in Indonesian politics? In a time when Indonesian democracy is under threat and protestors against the government are become more and more frustrated, does the internet in Indonesia still have the potential to be a force for good? In this week's episode Jemma chats with Ary Hermawan. Ary is the current editor of Indonesia at Melbourne and a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne's Asia Institute. He earned his bachelor degree in Islamic history from the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University and his master's degree in international journalism from the University of Arizona's School of Journalism. He previously worked as a managing editor and editor at large of Indonesia's leading English daily, The Jakarta Post. He also briefly served as deputy director of Amnesty International Indonesia. In 2024, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from the Australia-Indonesia Centre, Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University, Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales and Tito Ambyo from RMIT. The Indonesian music scene is currently experiencing a vibrant period of experimentation, where musicians are blending vernacular Indonesian music traditions with elements from diverse global influences and historical periods. This fusion has led to the emergence of groundbreaking acts like Senyawa, who have successfully captured international attention. While the creative landscape pushes forward, however, there's a simultaneous return to older technology in music distribution, particularly the resurgence of vinyl recording. This vinyl revival, mirroring a global trend, has taken root in Indonesia. Taufiq Rahman, editor-in-chief of Jakarta Post as well as the founder of Elevation Records, is at the forefront of this. He and his business partners have now established the country's sole vinyl pressing factory, marking a significant milestone in Indonesia's contemporary music industry. What is the role of vinyl recordings in Indonesian music history? And what are the factors driving its current renaissance? For those interested in exploring Indonesian music through vinyl, Taufiq Rahman will also offer his valuable insights, including why "Badai Pasti Berlalu" is one of Indonesia's finest pop productions and how the artistry of Rhoma Irama extends beyond dangdut music. In 2024, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Elisabeth Kramer from the University of New South Wales, Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University, Tito Ambyo from RMIT and Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University. Rapid growth in internet penetration in Indonesia over the past decade has altered the local media landscape and the ways in which news is produced and consumed. Over the past few years, several new broadcasting and digital media outlets have emerged, such as Tirto.id, Asumsi, Narasi TV, and Kumparan. One of these new digital players is the American-Canadian company VICE, which opened a Jakarta bureau in 2016. Instead of “importing” the VICE brand to Indonesia, the Jakarta-based team was given free editorial rein. As a result, it has created its own style of journalism that mixes “serious” journalism with popular culture reporting on memes or investigations into supernatural stories. This approach has garnered national and international awards as well as public attention. For example, VICE Indonesia's collaboration with Tirto.Id and the Jakarta Post to investigate cases of allegations of sexual abuse in Indonesian universities, won the 2020 Public Service Journalism Award from the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA). Meanwhile, its investigations into debts and debt collection have attracted more than 10 million views on YouTube. Like many digital media companies, however, VICE Indonesia also faces tough challenges. How is VICE Indonesia tackling these challenges? What does it contribute to the VICE global brand as well as to journalism in Indonesia? Why is VICE Indonesia interested in supernatural stories? And what's the story with the Khong Guan biscuit tin? In Talking Indonesia this week, Tito Ambyo explores these questions and more with the managing editor of VICE Indonesia, Ardyan M. Erlangga. Image by VICE Indonesia.

Wherever there are UFOs, there are UFO enthusiasts, and since there are UFOs everywhere, UFO enthusiasts can be found everywhere as well. This week we'll look at Indonesia, where members of that region's largest UFO organization have recently offered their opinion to the local press on the upcoming Pentagon UAP Task Force unclassified report due to come out later this month. An article written by Wulan Kusuma Wardhani and posted online for The Jakarta Post on Monday, June 7, 2021, is headlined, “Not a cult: Indonesia's biggest UFO-community BETA-UFO weighs in on U.S. government report.” The two people speaking for the organization are 55-year-old Nur Agustinas and 48-year-old Anugerah Sentot Sudono. Agustinus was a cofounder of BETA-UFO IN 1997 along with Bayu Yunantias Amus and several others, and Sudono is described as a “senior member” in the article. BETA is an acronym for “Benda Terbang Aneh,” which is Indonesian for “Unidentified Flying Object.” The term was introduced in the 1960s by Jacob Salutan, founder of the Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space. Salutan was a vice air marshal in the Indonesian Air Force and started Studi UFO Indonesia (Indonesian UFO Studies/SUFOI). He wrote two books on UFOs: “UFO: Salah Satu Masalah Dunia Masa Kini” (UFO: One of the Current World Problems) and “Menyingkap Rahasia Piring Terbang” (Unveiling the Secrets of UFOs). As of this writing, SUFOI appears to be inactive. Read more →

Nurdiyansah tells us about his trips across Indonesia to explore how spices from the region hold a multitude of stories that transcend the epochal eras: Dutch colonization, Japanese occupation, the national revolution era, New Order era, Reformasi, and the new digital age. The aroma and flavor of traditional dishes and culinary delights offered him personal and political reflections on the hybridity of identity and the convoluted meaning of "home." What does it really mean to be "Indonesian"? What are all the influences that shaped "Indonesian" cuisine? Is there really a pure "Indonesian" dish? How was pempek related to a nationwide massacre? Plus, a peek into "problems" in Alexandra's life, digital nomads, traditional textiles, and queer culture in Indonesia. Nurdiyansah Dalidjo is an interdisciplinary writer, researcher, and activist who seeks to memorialize the role of spices as the ingredients that fueled the revolution in Indonesia. He started his career as a journalist at Yayasan Jurnal Perempuan and has a master's degree in tourism through Program Beasiswa Unggulan, a scholarship program from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. Since graduating, he has gained over 10 years of experience in Development issues with a focus on ethical and sustainable tourism, indigenous issues, and social justice. Nurdiyansah is the founder of the tourism portal JejakWisata.com and co-initiator of the Kain Kita project, a collective independent movement that shares cultural information and stories of traditional fabrics and indigenous textiles known as kain in Indonesia. Previously, he was the research and publications manager at Perkumpulan SKALA, a non-profit organisation with a journalist membership base and a focus on environmental sustainability. He led SKALA's research teams in investigating reports on Indonesia's forest fires and haze disasters in 2015; on local wisdom held by indigenous peoples and related to disaster risk reduction in Indonesia; and about wildlife trafficking in Indonesia. His writings have been published on The Jakarta Post, Overland, mata jendala, Magdalene.co, Jurnal Perempuan, Tourism Watch Indonesia, Jurnal Wastra, Maximillian, Women's Media Center (WMC) FBOMB , and many others. In 2015, Nurdiyansah released his first travel writing book, Porn(O) Tour (Metagraf, 2015) in which he campaigns for the ethical and responsible tourism issues in a popular way. He is currently based in Jakarta and spends his time exploring colonial histories through food and textile in Indonesia. www.penjelajahrempah.com www.nurdiyansahdalidjo.medium.com IG: @penjelajah_rempah www.twitter.com/nurdiyansah --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sugar-nutmeg/support

In 1928, Belgian financier Alfred Loewenstein fell to his death from a private plane over the English Channel. How it happened has never been explained. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast, we'll describe the bizarre incident, which has been called "one of the strangest fatalities in the history of commercial aviation." We'll also consider whether people can be eaten by pythons and puzzle over an enigmatic horseman. Intro: Philosopher Robin Le Poidevin offers a time-travel puzzle concerning an indefinite diary. Journalists, reporters and media have a crucial role in foreign policy. These people, are the ones who have framed foreign policy news and then share it to the public as a piece of information. That information can shift people's perception and change someone's view on any particular issues, countries, leaders, etc. I had a fantastic opportunity to talk with three journalists working for several prominent international medias and news outlet. I asked them to choose one out of many interesting issues this year as their best story to cover and their strategy in framing an international issue to be more understandable and interesting for larger audiences. What are the difficulties and advantages of being a journalist covering international or foreign policy issues? Will there always be a personal or institutional bias in reporting foreign policy news? For people who wants to be a journalist, what level of critical thinking do they need to have? I explored those questions with Dian Septiari from the Jakarta Post, Randy Mulyanto and Stanley Widianto who have been actively writing for theTelegraph, South China Morning Post, Nikkei Asia and Reuters! Check out Foreign Policy Talks on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts to get their answers.

Japan has just got its new Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga. This happens after the previous Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, resigned from his post due to health reasons. Suga was pretty much an insider of Abe's administration. Suga held a ministerial position from 2006 to 2007, and was appointed Chief of Cabinet Secretary in 2012. He departed his post to assume his new role in September 2020. Shortly after being sworn in, he made some diplomatic manoeuvres by meeting officials from the US, China, Vietnam, and very recently Indonesia. With this succession of power, we would like to know, what could be Japan's foreign policy under Prime Minister Suga? In this episode, we talked to Noto Suoneto from the Foreign Policy Talks Podcast and a current Master's Candidate in International Political Economy at the University of Birmingham about the outlook of Japan's foreign policy, and specifically its relations with Indonesia. Besides his interest in IPE, Noto Suoneto has an interest in the East Asian Affairs. Very recently, Noto Suoneto wrote a number of articles for The Jakarta Post and The Diplomat. The International Coffee Organization, who first organized the holiday in 2014, focused this year's activity on a project titled, “Coffee's Next Generation.” While details are yet to be announced, the ICO said the program will involve financial support and training for young entrepreneurs in the coffee sector. The International Women's Coffee Alliance, or IWCA, launched a fundraising campaign called, “Empowered Voices.” The campaign will run until October 15, the International Day of Rural Women, and aims to recognize 100 women while raising US$10,000 to continue the work of the organization. The holiday also marked the launch of the Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity, founded by Phyllis Johnson of BD Imports. The coalition is described as “a robust, global community of coffee advocates driven to bring about more equity and diversity into the coffee community.” In its first webinar, the group introduced its first board members and set out a one-year timeline of activities that includes a range of educational and outreach initiatives. Indonesia's coffee producers are asking for help with financing as the pandemic continues to impact the demand for coffee. The Jakarta Post reports that tons of coffee are being held under what is known as a warehouse receipt, a system that allows smallholders to deposit their harvest in a warehouse as collateral for a loan. Both smallholders are exporters face difficulty under this system, particularly when prices are low and there are few buyers. And this is before most of the coffee has been harvested: almost 70% of Aceh's harvest, currently projected at 52,000 tons, will take place between October and January. Indonesia's Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises is preparing multiple financing schemes. Other financing organizations, like the state-owned bank, are also offering support through warehouse receipt subsidies.Australian-based Breville Group has acquired the US-based grinder maker, Baratza, for US$60 million according to a report in Finance News Network. Breville produces a range of small kitchen appliances with an emphasis on the home coffee segment. Baratza, established in 1999, is known for its production of commercial-level quality burr grinders for home use. Breville Group says the acquisition brings together two of the world's leading companies in the design and global distribution of coffee products. A recent feature in Asia Times explores how women entrepreneurs in the Gulf are working to overcome the additional hurdle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amid the backdrop of recent economic and social reforms aimed to increase women's participation in the workforce, the feature explores how gender biases have made it more difficult for female entrepreneurs to access to stimulus packages, lending, or private investors. Nooran Al Bannay, the founder of Coffee Architecture in Abu Dhabi, is among those interviewed. The first female Q Grader in the region, Nooran opened her shop in 2018 after convincing her family members of her dream to open a coffee shop. This episode of Recap was made possible with the support of BRITA. She also writes op-eds on culture and politics for the Guardian. Laksmi's first bestselling novel, Amba/The Question of Red tells the modern story of two ill-starred lovers, Amba and Bhisma of the great Hindu epic Mahabharata, who were driven apart by one the bloodiest purges in the 20th century—the massacre of up to one million accused communists in Indonesia between 1965 and 1968. The novel won Germany's LiBeraturpreis 2016 and was named #1 on Germany's Weltempfaenger list of the best works of fiction from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Arab World translated into German. The novel has been translated into several languages. Laksmi's second novel, Aruna dan Lidahnya, was a bestseller in Indonesia and published in the US in February 2018 under the title The Birdwoman's Palate. Laksmi Pamuntjak spoke to Dr Natali Pearson about her third novel, Fall Baby, and about the intricacies of art, religion, politics and history in a troubled Indonesia, but also about family, identity, motherhood, and the sisterhood of women. Fall Baby tells the story of two women—Srikandi (Siri) and Dara, one a globetrotting visual artist, the other a political activist. Siri is the illegitimate daughter of Amba and Bhisma, the protagonists of Laksmi Pamuntjak's award-winning first novel, Amba/The Question of Red. Dara is Siri's best friend-turned foe. After almost a lifetime of soul-searching in different cities of the world, Siri—brave, brilliant, broken—seeks to escape the difficult realities of her family history by making a new life in Berlin. Just as she is starting to find her footing in her new home, both in art and in life, unexpected family circumstances and a changing political landscape compel her to return to Jakarta—and to confront not only the wounds of her past, but also the complex realities of faith, art and politics in Indonesia: from the daily frustrations of navigating between two cultures and her multiple selves to dealing with religious fanatics who deem her art blasphemous. Between 2009 and 2011, she was a member of the international jury of the Prince Claus Award. Laksmi's third novel, Herbstkind, was published in Germany in August 2018. The original English version of the novel, The Fall Baby, was published by Penguin Random House in October 2019. This makes Laksmi a rare few among Indonesian contemporary authors whose work in English has been published by Penguin Random House. The Indonesian version of the novel, Srikandi, is slated for publication by Gramedia Pustaka Utama early next year. Laksmi is currently at work on a new collection of short stories on women in relationships. Find out more on her website: http://laksmipamuntjak.com/ View the transcript here: https://bit.ly/2tmd9vK

In this episode, we learn about Brian's passion for becoming a composer/musician, the constant challenges he faced with accepting that playing music could be a full-time profession that was meaningful and appreciated by others. Brian constantly struggled with accepting that working as a musician was a fine way of making a living, and eventually learned that he didn't need to work a traditional 9-5 job to contribute to the advancement of society. His genuine appreciation for the musical talent he was born with, his supportive environment, and the acknowledgement of the good luck he came across played a pivotal role in his success.  We also discuss how failure is a part of the process, how accepting failure can actually be an achievement in the grander scheme of things, and how failure serves as motivation to continue on your path, not as a deterrent from it. Brian Baumbusch is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Oakland, California, whose "harmonically vivid... intense... simmering" (NY Times) compositions push the boundaries of new music. He has spearheaded projects of both western and non-western music which are considered a “cultural treat” (Maryland Gazette). He has headlined performances at the Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar, The Smithsonian Instituion in Washington, The Clarice Smith Center of Maryland, Kresge Hall at MIT, Cambridge, The Yerba Buena Center of San Francisco, and the Prado Concert Series in Madrid, among others. He has collaborated with musicians such as The JACK Quartet, Evan Ziporyn, Pauline Oliveros, David Behrman, Wayne Vitale, and I Made Bandem. Baumbusch has conducted extensive research and collaborated with a variety of musicians from around the globe. In 2009, he founded the Cacho Ensemble in Madrid, dedicated to reviving traditional Argentinean folk music, which has performed throughout Europe and the United States. In 2010, Baumbusch completed the first full English translation of Atahualpa Yupanqui's epic poem "El payador perseguido.” The translation was presented at the Embassy of Argentina in Washington D.C., sponsored by the cultural attaché of the embassy, Francisco Achaval, who describes Baumbusch's playing as embodying “supurb technique which, while listening, took me back to the deep heartland of my country; he has found a way to sing zambas from the bottom of his soul.”  Baumbusch has also performed with and helped direct many Balinese gamelan groups across the U.S., including Dharma Swara of New York, Galak Tikka of Boston, Sekar Jaya of San Francisco, Gita Sari of Holy Cross, and Candra Kancana of Bard College. Dr. I Made Bandem describes Baumbusch as “a serious musician and composer whose profound understanding of Balinese music, dance, and culture has contributed a lot to the development of Balinese music.” In 2012, Baumbusch produced a large scale collaboration with the JACK Quartet and Balinese choreographers Dr. I Made Bandem and Dr. Suasthi Bandem, together with Dr. Bandem's performing group Makaradhwaja. They premiered their collaboration at the Bali Arts Festival in June, 2012. The Jakarta Post described the premiere saying "Baumbusch's overture was a grand and rich musical epic and instantly drew the crowd's amazement. Its patterns were intricate, a testament of Baumbusch's virtuosity and his ability to push the musicians to reveal the astounding ability of their instruments." Additionally, Baumbusch's arrangements of traditional gamelan pieces for string quartet caught the attention of David Harrington (violinist and director of the Kronos Quatet) who describes Baumbusch's work as  “one of the finest attempts to bring the string quartet into the world of Gamelan music. For a composer so youthful to possess this expertise is a very hopeful sign.”  In 2013, Baumbusch founded The Lightbulb Ensemble, an new-music composer's collective performing on steel instruments built and designed by Baumbusch. The group was highlighted in November of 2013 at the Performing Indonesia Festival at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, where they represented the advent of American experimental performing ensembles drawing heavy influence from gamelan music. In 2014, The Lightbulb Ensemble was awarded a major grant from the Gerbode Foundation, commissioning Baumbusch and his mentor and collaborator, Wayne Vitale, to compose an evening length work for The Lightbulb Ensemble to be premiered alongside Gamelan Sekar Jaya at the Yerba Buena Center of San Francisco, in May, 2015. The group is currently busy developing these ongoing projects. Baumbusch received his undergraduate degree from Bard College, where he studied microtonal composition with Kyle Gann, and received his M.A. in composition from Mills College, where he studied under various established composers including Chris Brown, Fred Frith, Roscoe Mitchell, and Zeena Parkins, among others. Baumbusch has lectured on composition and world music at the University of Maryland, The Smithsonian Institution, CalArts, Union College, Holy Cross, Bard College, Mills College, U.N. Reno, and the Escuela TAI of Madrid. He has additionally presented electronic music performances at UCSD, UCSB, CalArts, UNR and Mills College. He is currently based in the Bay Area.
