This interview is another resource provided by DiepCFoundation.org specifically providing access to care for those affected by breast cancer. The slide presentation and interview are available on the Foundation educational channel for our listeners and followers who would like to access it at DiepCFoundation YouTube channel. We are discussing a topic that is often discussed in my community so I reached out to my guest to share her expertise on the repair of diastasis and recognizing what a hernia or bulge might look like after autologous breast reconstruction, specifically DIEP flaps. My guest is Dr. Kelsey McClure who practices with a team of other microsurgeons at Southwest Breast and Aesthetics in Phoenix, AZ. She is a board-certified plastic surgeon and holds certification with The American Board of Plastic Surgery. She is an active member of: The American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM) The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) Mountain West Society of Plastic Surgeons (MWSPS) AND the Arizona Society of Plastic Surgeons She has authored several research publications. Dr. McClure believes that shared decision- making is necessary to tailor a comprehensive aesthetic and reconstructive plan. We reference a PRS Global Open paper published by Dr. Arvind Gowda who has been a guest on a previous episode of the DiepCJourney podcast. Eight Fought to Live: The Story of My AIDS Therapy Group, 1988-1990 by Florence Rosiello, PhD1988: 82,362 gay and bisexual men had AIDS.1989: 100,000 gay and bisexual men had AIDS. 1990: 307,000 gay and bisexual men had AIDS. These are the two years Dr. Rosiello led an AIDS therapy group at Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York City. Within two years each man in her group passed away from AIDS complications. One of these men was Vito Russo, an AIDS activist and historian. This is the story of eight gay men living with advanced AIDS and one inexperienced fresh out of training psychoanalyst. Each man's intimate story is peppered with Dr. Rosiello's anxiety and her growing awareness regarding the importance of emotional authenticity in psychotherapy. The group members had no spare moments for Dr. Rosiello to use her newly learned psychoanalytic techniques. There was only time to be real. Early on these group members pledged to not die. They pledged emotional support for the life of the group. This pledge held true for over a year. How an astrological analysis can help you clarify and foster self-awareness for your behavior patterns to live a more fulfilled life. Highlights from both Stephanie and Marnie's charts, which Charlotte shared with them for the first time on air. We both learned so much about astrology and our charts. Greg chats with Chuck from Arizona Society of Homebrewers, Chris from Hoppy Craftsman Podcast, and Mike from Simple Machine - Grand. He also talks with three festival goers; Ashley, Jeremiah, and Joey. Recorded live January 13, 2024 at Riverview Park in Mesa, Arizona.
Episode 2023 – 097 Expert Witnessing For Fun and Profit Presentation to the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants [06 November 2023] Part 1 of 1 ____________________________________________________ Author and host, Gary Michael Smith, Esq., is a decades-experienced, AV rated, attorney, American Arbitration Association panelist, founding director of the Arizona Cannabis Bar Association, board member of the Arizona Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, and general counsel to the nation's oldest federally recognized, 501C3, multi-racial peyote church. Psychedelica Lex is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey of the laws and regulations governing psychedelic substances. ABOUT THE PSYCHEDELICA LEX PODCAST AND CHANNEL President Nixon's enactment of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970 banished most psychedelics to Schedule I, making psychedelics for most purpose illegal. However, as the Congressional Record reveals, psychedelics never got a fair trial and little scientific evidence, if any, was considered by lawmakers. Prohibition was more about politics than public health. Yet, historical record, anecdotal evidence, and scientific studies all suggest that prohibition was an unnecessary and harmful overreaction and that many benefits may be derived from psychedelics. Psychedelica Lex puts the question of psychedelics on trial. Hosted by a veteran litigation attorney, each episode will explore psychedelics from different perspectives. As we explore the evidence together, you - the audience - will serve as jurors. Together we will examine every facet. Applying the rigors of cross examination and the Socratic method, we will seek an objective truth. ____________________________________________________________ The growth, trafficking, sale, possession, or consumption of psychedelics may be a felony punishable by imprisonment, fines, forfeiture of property, or any combination thereof. Most states have regulatory and criminal laws that mimic federal law. This podcast is for general informational purposes only. Upon graduating from Utah State University in 2001, I spent four years with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, where I provided tax preparation and consulting services to privately held companies and their owners. Many of these companies were real estate developers and investors. This led to a position in private industry as the Tax Director of a large real estate company with more than $2 billion in assets. While there I was involved in residential and commercial rental property, real estate development, hospitality businesses (hotels and restaurants) as well as venture companies in various industries. This experience sparked an entrepreneurial spirit within me, and I continue to be involved in real estate investing to this day. I joined the Morrison, Clark & Company management team in 2017 and have used my extensive, direct experience serving the construction and real estate industries by heading up the Cost Segregation, Research & Development Credits, Opportunity Zone and 1031 Exchange specialties of the firm. In 2019, I was excited to join the MCC Partner group as a Tax Partner where I have the privilege of leading an outstanding group of professionals providing personalized services to our clients. Originally from Idaho, I stay actively involved in the community by serving on volunteer non-profit boards and participating in church leadership. I cherish spending time with my family, and I enjoy cooking outdoors for family, friends and neighbors. As a family we are highly involved in music, and our home is often filled with the sounds of cello, drums, piano and guitar. 8-15-23 Tonight we're talking with Ben Chaney, owner of Scale and Feather Meadery in Avondale, Arizona. Scale & Feather is a small meadery run by three friends, Ben and Tamara Chaney are high school sweethearts who are going strong with 25 years together. Amber DeGiso is a graphic design specialist–creates cool labels and logos. They specialize in using local ingredients to produce their products. Chaney and one of the other founders, Matt Cross, took a class at UC Davis to learn more about honey wine. Their first foray into the mead business was making it for friends' weddings. Decorated like an ancient mead hall complete with a flickering chandelier, the tasting room's theme is reminiscent of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Chaney says a highlight of the space is a dragon head with glowing eyes that's poised above the bar. Scale & Feather is also located next to a Nintendo-themed brewery called 8-Bit Aleworks. Ben has been making mead at home since 2011, and inspired by friends living their dreams, He decided that it was time to play with the big boys and, along with his wife and friend, opened Scale and Feather Meadery in 2019. A Native Arizonan, Ben graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree and has over 18 years of advertising, marketing, and event management experience. Ben completed the UC Davis Advanced Mead Making and Business of Mead Making course and won a silver medal from the Arizona Society of Homebrewers before going pro. Scale & Feather Meadery has received bronze medals from the National Honey Board in 2021 and Texas Mead Cup in 2022. Spicy meads started in 2019 and have since become a focus point for sales as in Arizona sweet and spicy seem to be a winning combination. These animals live in mountainous regions of Asia and have been called by the World Wildlife Foundation “Guardians of the Headwaters” as they roam the headwater areas of the western basins. The snow leopard, or Guardian of the Headwaters, is a symbol of Anuncia's dedication to improve daily quality of life for the millions of underserved patients with hydrocephalus and other CSF disorders, as well as their families, who suffer from the clinical, economic, and emotional burden of repeat revision brain surgery due to VP shunt occlusions. Founded by a group of innovators, dreamers, entrepreneurs and scientists, Jellatech is on a mission to eliminate animals from the food system, making better ingredient products - starting with collagen and gelatin. Collagen is a by-product of the meat industry (protein in the body). You may be familiar with collagen from seeing it in skin serums, or with its derivative, gelatin, in gummy bears - but it's likely around you much more than you realize. This ingredient is used in a number of applications such as for food texturizers, vaccine stabilizers, pill capsules, the clarification of wine and beer, and many more. Today, the only way to source native, functional collagen is to extract it from animals. This is what they are changing at Jellatech. Jellatech makes functional, native collagen - without animals. Cellular agriculture enables one to produce a more sustainable, smarter high quality collagen that breaks the cycle of relying on an inefficient and unethical supply chain of live animals. Episode Description: Do you have the desire to serve the veteran community? Our guest this week is retired Lieutenant Colonel Kathy Gallowitz. She is the founder and CEO of Vanguard Veteran, LLC. Additionally, Kathy is the author of Beyond “Thank You for Your Service”: The Veteran Champion Handbook for Civilians. Kathy grew up in a military family and moreover served for 29 years in the U.S. Air Force. Since her retirement, Kathy's mission has shifted to caring for the veteran community by equipping civilians to “serve them in ways that make sense.” To that end, Vanguard Veteran provides business leaders and faith communities with resources and practical strategies to become “veteran champions.” It is Kathy's desire to help civilians and particularly faith communities cultivate a sense of belonging, purpose, trust, and connectedness for veterans. Indeed, Kathy invites us all to “be part of the win” by serving the broad demographic of the veteran community. In this conversation, you will hear Bobby and Kathy discuss: The transitory nature of military life. What the military life looks like for the whole family. The difficulties of transitioning from the military to the civilian sector. How we need veterans and they need us. How to foster practical support, trusting relationships, and spiritual resiliency. The role of churches in helping veterans come home and heal. Cultivating authentic connectedness. Having a team mindset, and cultivating a service-over-self mentality. The need for clergy and laypeople partnership in military ministry. ____________________________________________________________ About the guest: Retired Lt. Col Kathy Gallowitz was heavily influenced by military service, growing up as a Navy ‘brat' and serving nearly 30 years as an Air Force Officer. She is the author of "Beyond Thank You For your Service," The Veteran Champion Handbook for Civilians, and has Masters degrees in Nursing and Political Science. As an award-winning businesswoman and the Veteran-Hiring Advisor for the Arizona Society of Human Resource Management, Kathy coaches employers on how to excel in hiring and retaining Veteran talent. A highly sought-after talent pool, less than 3% of Veterans are unemployed, while more than 30% are underemployed. Kathy's “Veteran Talent Academy” equips employers to find, fully employ and retain Veterans. Kathy also provides volunteer faith community leaders support to build Military Ministries. To cultivate mutual support, a sense of belonging, and spiritual resiliency for Service members, Veterans, and their families. About the host: Following a successful career as CEO, Bobby sold his business to a publicly-traded company. The MisFitNation Show welcomes US Air Force Veteran and Veteran Advocate Kathy Gallowitz Welcome to our Top it off Tuesday show this week. We are glad you are with us. This is a great chat with an amazing guest: Everything about retired LtCol Kathy Gallowitz was influenced by military service, growing up as a Navy ‘brat' and serving nearly 30 years as an Air Force Officer. She is the author of “Beyond ‘Thank You For Your Service,' The Veteran Champion Handbook for Civilians" and has Masters degrees in Nursing and Political Science. Kathy was inspired to equip people who have never served in the military to become Veteran Champions when she noticed how different her life had been from most Americans and that citizens knew little about military culture. As an award-winning businesswoman and the Veteran Hiring Advisor for the Arizona Society of Human Resource Management, Kathy coaches employers on how to excel in hiring and retaining Veteran talent. A highly sought-after talent pool, less than 3% of Veterans are unemployed, while more than 30% are underemployed. Kathy's “Veteran Talent Academy” equips employers to find, leverage and retain Veterans. Kathy also equips volunteer leaders to build Military Ministries that cultivate mutual support, a sense of belonging, and spiritual resiliency for military-connected people. In this episode, you'll also hear:How Kathy's military background led her to start a ministry geared toward supporting veterans and their familiesSome of the specific challenges military people face upon returning to civilian lifeHow to form a military ministry in your own communityWhat it takes to lead a military ministry — and why you may be more qualified than you thinkKathy's advice for pursuing a calling that doesn't necessarily bring instant rewardsBe sure to read all the way to the end to learn how you can help support the military-connected people in your own community! A Life Without RootsFor Lt. Col. Kathy Lowrey Gallowitz, supporting the military was always a part of life. Her father served active duty in the Navy, and so her family moved around the world many times throughout her childhood and teenage years. In particular, she remembers being uprooted during her junior year of high school — leaving behind friends, achievements, and the strongest sense of belonging she'd ever known — and moving to Iceland. When Kathy and her first husband finished their active-duty service in the Air Force and were ready to settle down, she was determined to give their children the roots she'd never had. “By about the age of 35, I had lived in about 20 communities,” she recalls. “And I started to notice how my experiences had been pretty different.”Due to living in so many different places, she'd never had close neighbors to rely on or support through hard times, and she didn't have a solid understanding of how to be involved in her community. So she started learning and making an effort to contribute however she could. Eventually, Kathy helped start an outreach program aimed at helping civilians learn how to support local military families. A few years into the program, however, someone alerted her to an untapped but very important group of people: the faith community. This led her to create a clergy outreach program as well. As Kathy explains, the faith community is uniquely equipped to support veterans and military families for several reasons:Spirituality plays a key role in healing of all kindsFaith communities typically emphasize hospitalityThose who serve in the military often establish a deep, trusting relationship with pastors during their service and carry that trust and respect with them after they leave the serviceChurches often already have counseling and other support services availableBecause faith communities are already so well-equipped to support military people, it's really just a matter of knowing how to reach out and offer that support. “It's not a heavy lift to really just be welcoming and supportive, practically and spiritually, of the military members in your congregation and in your community,” Kathy says.Though Kathy has since moved to another state, she continues to use her experience — both as a military nursing professional and as a military ministry leader, and also as a John Maxwell speaker, trainer, and coach — to work with volunteers who will go on to become military ministry leaders themselves. “So it all kind of comes together to glorify the Lord and support military-connected people,” she concludes.Freedom Isn't FreeKathy's story is an important reminder to all of us: the freedoms we enjoy have come to us through sacrifice — and too often the people who made those sacrifices have been overlooked. As Kathy points out, not everyone is even eligible to serve in the military. “And so,” she adds, “people who do volunteer to serve in the military — it's our opportunity, if not responsibility, to help them. Because they do help create our way of life!” What's more, those who serve in the military tend to avoid asking for help, so it's critical that military ministry leaders understand the unique challenges these people are facing. Some of these challenges include:Feeling disconnected: Military people are taught to be team players and to place duty and the mission over oneself. This can prevent them from asking for help when they need it, and also cause them to feel disconnected from society after leaving military service. Moral injury: Violating one's belief system — for example, having to kill in battle despite being taught the command “Thou shalt not kill” from a young age — can cause feelings of shame and contribute to PTSD. Soul injury: Unmourned loss and unforgiven guilt and shame can take a heavy toll emotionally and can be very difficult to process.Isolation: The military gives people a very close camaraderie and a tribe to belong to. When military people transition into civilian life, they lose that tribe and often feel incredibly isolated as a result. While not every military ministry leader is trained and equipped to help military people work through trauma, having a basic understanding of what these people are dealing with allows us to support them in getting all the help they need. That's why, in Kathy's book, Beyond “Thank You for Your Service”: The Veteran Champion handbook for civilians, she reminds us that we owe our veterans more than just a platitude or simple word of thanks. While the gesture of a warm welcome and word of thanks is absolutely needed, there is much more that we can and should do. “We all really need to go beyond,” Kathy says, “and I contend that the actions we take to go beyond center mostly on developing trusting relationships so that the service member and their family can start building their new civilian tribe. We all need that social connection and that support, and in this case, we need people with whom we can promote our spiritual resiliency. People who understand faith, who are believers, who can help us move in very positive directions of healing and growth. And that all happens in a military ministry.”How to Form a Military MinistryIf you're interested in forming a military ministry for your community, Kathy says the first step is to talk to your clergy (e.g. pastor, rabbi, priest, etc.) and ask what support systems for military people are already in place. Chances are, it may be as limited as a bulletin board thanking members of the congregation who have served. If so, that's the perfect opportunity for you to volunteer to partner with your clergy and start bringing people together. “It's really a partnership with the clergy member,” Kathy explains. “But the volunteer, the one who takes the lead, is the facilitator and the organizer.”Once you have your clergy's approval, the next step is to do some outreach to identify the military-connected people in the congregation. Not everyone who has served in the military “looks the part,” so to speak, and not every veteran wants to join a military-affiliated group. Then, finally, it's time to talk to those people and learn what they want and need from the ministry. “There is no cookie-cutter approach,” Kathy says. “The needs of the people in an older congregation with Vietnam veterans will look very different from the needs of a group in a younger congregation with military spouses who have young children.” So as you bring the military people in your congregation together, ask them what kinds of activities and discussions they would find meaningful — and trust that God will guide you. Who Is Qualified to Lead a Military Ministry? For those who want to start a military ministry but aren't sure they qualify, Kathy says the primary qualification is that you love the military and the people who serve in it. You don't have to be a counselor, nurse, pastor, or hold some other specific title. “You aren't a leader because you have a title,” Kathy explains. “You're a leader because you know how to communicate, and you know how to make decisions, and you know how to relate to people.”That said, Kathy does believe it's important to understand military culture and the veteran community, and it's even better if you're a veteran yourself or have a family member who has served. The more you're able to relate to military-connected people — and the more they're able to relate to you — the easier it will be for you to help them. Finally, it's important to have a strong relationship with your clergy, so they can help you connect with local support systems such as counseling, food banks, homeless shelters, and so on, and so they can be personally involved in the military ministry as well. While it's common to feel intimidated or fearful of starting a military ministry, Kathy stresses that the important thing is to start. “You aren't expected to have all the answers,” she says. “You aren't expected to fix it. You're expected to provide friendship, practical support, and encouragement. Work through your clergy and refer people and just understand your limitations.” Your job as a volunteer isn't to help these people work through trauma — it's to help them build relationships. “You're just really trying to be a facilitator,” Kathy adds. “A facilitator of connection, a facilitator of the Lord's work, and being supportive. And so it really is magical in its simplicity.” And as you bring people together and help them build those relationships, you might just be surprised how God works among the group and empowers them to help each other, too. Small Victories Add UpIf you feel called to work on building your own military ministry but aren't sure where to start, Kathy offers a ton of great resources through her book, Beyond “Thank You for Your Service”, and on her website, Vanguard Veteran. Even if you aren't currently able to step up and lead a military ministry yourself, however, Kathy urges you to look for ways to support the military-connected people in your community. “Every citizen has an opportunity to do more as a veteran champion to help promote their quality of life and [support them] in the return to spirituality and their return to their potential,” she says. Whatever your ministry, business, or book topic may be, let Kathy's story inspire you today — not only to support the military people in your community, but also to keep pushing forward even when you don't see instant rewards for your work. Even if you aren't the “best of the best” and don't have all the answers, you can still do the Lord's work and share Christ with others through your words and actions. Furthermore, Kathy emphasizes the importance of celebrating the small wins that come from saying “yes” to God's call — things as simple as supporting someone through a hard time or watching God work through relationships you have helped facilitate. “Those things are so fulfilling for me,” Kathy says, “because I have trusting relationships with people who are hurting, and I feel like I can make a small difference just by being there and loving on them in the ways that I know how to do… Those are small wins, but they're really not! That is the essence of the whole thing.”Can there be any greater reward than knowing you are doing God's work and watching Him work through you to impact other people's lives for the better? Gabriella von Elekes is a multi-lingual astrologer, teacher and public speaker born in Transylvania, who inherited her passion for metaphysical matters from her grandmother, Baroness Gabriella Homorodszentmartoni Biro. After graduating from high school she moved to Hungary to be with her father, earning a Master's Degree in French Language and Literature. She began her career in the international import-export business and at twenty-five years old she was offered a high security clearance government position. She didn't agree with the Communist regime and defected to Germany instead, where she met and married a fellow Hungarian and then moved to the United States. Later Gabriella and her husband lived in the Orient and traveled all over the world. Life appeared to be perfect; love, money, status ‚ it was all there! Gabriella became a mid-level executive with a cosmetic company working her way up to become an executive. Just when she was about "to make it" somebody else got to live HER dream! A pattern was emerging: every time Gabriella came close to becoming an "executive", or a "person with power" that opportunity was taken away. She began searching for answers. By "chance" she literally ran into a professional astrologer, who helped Gabriella clarify her soul's purpose and showed her that she was "barking up the wrong tree". Her soul's mission was to become an astrologer! in 2000 she moved to Scottsdale Arizona and studied astrology at the Astrological Institute, graduating in 2002. She began teaching at the Institute in the fall of 2002. By 2004 she was the President of the Arizona Society of Astrologers, had a TV show on Channel 3 in Phoenix, AZ, helped introduce Steven Forest's book The Inner Sky" to the Romanian public and wrote the forward to the Romanian translation. She was a staff writer for the EZnetNews in the Scottsdale Area. As a result, Gabriella has helped countless people in their quest for inner peace, understanding difficulties in their life be it in relationships (private or business), inner turmoil, starting a business, finding the best place to live or in understanding their children. This episode was recorded at the Arizona Society of Homebrewers Brew Out where a group of homebrewers got together to brew a bunch of beers. As you've probably heard many times on this show most professional brewers start off homebrewing. However, some people just dig this as a hobby and still make amazing beer. Either way, ASH is a great organization supporting the Arizona beer scene. Enjoy the show!
In this episode, I sit down with Alex Phillips from Grand Canyon Brewing and Nathan Reese from Trout Unlimited. Along with the Arizona Wildlife Foundation and the Arizona Society of Homebrewers contest winner Jeff Skaggs they created a beer called Conservation Kolsch. The goal of this brew is to bring attention to the damage that uranium mining is causing to the Grand Canyon and the surrounding national forest. This is why I love Arizona beer: seeing the bigger picture about what is going on with the environment of this great state and doing all that it can to be part of the solution. Enjoy the show! Today I’m excited to be talking with Hayden Williams, a national leader in CPA education. Hayden is Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Education at the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (WSCPA). Hayden started as a CPA almost 20 years ago. He was a staff accountant at a small firm in Arizona before moving to Director of Finance at the Arizona Society of CPAs. Following his dream to live in the North West, Hayden became CFO of WSCPA. After two years with WSCPA, Hayden transferred to Vice President of Education. Hayden and the education department at the WSCPA provide about 1000 webcasts and webinars to their members. 300 are live programs, and the WSCPA actually webcasts about 100 of those live programs. There are also 15 conferences, 5 of which are webcast. “In the last seven years, education has changed dramatically with the introduction of the Internet. The Internet was always here, but when the downturn in the economy came … there was an onslaught of education being provided via the Web.” This includes self-study programs, webcasts and webinars, and that changed the landscape totally for CPE, where the state society or a county bar association had a geographic lock on education. That doesn’t exist anymore. Seven years ago WSCPA might have had 400 live programs and a few conferences, but they have actually cut back on live offerings to start producing webcasts. If you aren’t familiar, there is a difference between a webcast and a webinar. A webcast is a video and audio presentation with a power point. A webinar is the audio with a power point. The difference is that you have a talking head on a webcast. Some entities will market their webinars as webcasts, but you should expect a live presenter in a webcast. Before Hayden was VP of Education, WSCPA did their first live webcast. They had 300 people from all over the country attend the 990 course via webcast. “That always stuck in the back of my mind, so I thought we should be doing this on a regular basis.” Now, WSCPA has really embraced technology. They have partnerships with five or six states in which the WSCPA provides webcasts for those states, and the WSCPA purchases webcasts from other entities. “We really embrace that technology and we’re not worried about saturating the market. We will have a class on 1040s, and three days later we’ll have a webcast of 1040. What we’re trying to do is penetrate the market as much as possible with all forms of CPE.” Seven years ago, the WSCPA came up with the concept of the One-Stop Shop. They endeavor to provide all of the self-study, webcasts, webinars, and conferences and live seminars that a CPA will need, in one digital location. They haven’t grown their market share, but the WSCPA has maintained the market share they had before the economy went south, while many other associations are losing market share. Online CPE has removed a lot of the barriers that existed even just 10 years ago, but Hayden has an idea of where continued professional education will go in the future. Hayden is working to make webcasts and webinars more interactive, and he believes that an important step is for the presenters to start creating an experience specifically for the web audience. Hayden imagines more cameras, a speaker that can talk to the audience using their names, and generally more engagement with the online audience. Hayden imagines an interactive application to accompany presentations, which offers a live workbook experience and direct interaction with the presenter. “We have to start thinking about how we embrace that audience, how do we create that experience?” I greatly appreciate Hayden taking the time to come talk to us. Continuing Professional Education is a big part of my life, and I love that people like Hayden are working to make it more accessible and more effective. -- Resources: Learn more about Hayden, CPE and the WSCPA Contact Hayden with the subject line “Improv is No Joke Podcast” Learn more about your ad choices. This past week I gave a presentation at the Arizona Society of CPA's Financial Planning Conference on this matter, and that presentation serves as the basis for this week's podcast. The slides used for this presentation are available at http://www.edzollars.com/2008-06-16_Knocking.pdf .The podcast is sponsored by Leimberg Information Services, located at http://www.leimbergservices.com .

A listener who was following along in some discussions on the Arizona Society of CPAs sent me an email suggesting that perhaps it might be useful to look at the issues involved with LLCs and S corporations. This week we will look at this issue, one that often doesn't get covered well since the topic cuts across what is often covered in partnership discussions (the use of LLCs) and S corporations (where often LLCs are presented as an alternative to, rather than a potential form of, an S corporation). The podcast covers issues that arise when a single member LLC is used to hold S corporation stock, as well as when an LLC elects corporate status and wishes to be taxed under the S corporation rules. The materials are at http://edzollars.com/2008-02-04_S_Corporation.pdf .The podcast is sponsored by Leimberg Information Services, located online at http://www.leimbergservices.com .
This week's podcast is based on my presentation today at the Arizona Society of CPAs' Arizona Federal Tax Insitute held at the Arizona Biltmore. The Biltmore is located just south and slightly west of Piestewa Peak and not terribly far from my office in Phoenix (less than a ten minute drive--and that only because my office is closest to the back side of the resort, so you have to drive around it first). There are a number of pieces of material for this podcast available. You probably will want each of the following: 1. The Manual 2. Excel Example File 3. The Slides In the upcoming week I will be in Virginia Beach, Virginia for the Virginia Accounting and Auditing Conference's second run. It will be the same presentation I gave in Roanoke back in September. I have two more "on the road" presentations scheduled--the first in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Oklahoma Tax Institute where I'll do a technology update for tax professionals on December 2. The next (and most likely final) road trip this year will be at the Ohio Society of CPA's Ohio Federal and State Tax Insitute to be held in Columbus on December 15 and 16th. I'll be doing the Federal Tax Update the morning of the 15th. If any of you are going to be attending those conferences, let me know or stop by and say hi at the conference.
Today Anthony Forschino, Legilsative Liaison for the Arizona Department of Revenue spoke at the Arizona Society of CPAs Arizona DOR Liaison Luncheon about legislation passed the last legislative session, and those bills the Department of Revenue plans to ask to be considered in the upcoming session. Anthony also noted the "old" email addresses no longer work for the Department of Revenue, so you need to update your address book for any contacts you may have to their new azdor.gov address.

Today's podcast reports on the Arizona Society of CPAs' Arizona Department of Revenue Liaison luncheon today. Speaking at the lunch was Christie Comanita, Manager in the Tax Policy & Research at the ADOR who oversees rulings on taxes other than income taxes at the Department of Revenue. She discussed the system for obtaining and issuing various rulings, as well as an update on the Streamlined Sales Tax Project and Arizona's position on that program. The program also details Arizona Individual Income Tax Ruling ITR 05-2 on claiming the exemption for your child if you did not claim the child on the federal return so the child could claim one of the education credits.
