Send us a textTimothy John Trudgen is the CEO and co-founder of Hope for Health, a non-profit organization that provides deep learning and supportive coaching using traditional knowledge to improve the health of Australia's indigenous population.Timothy has worked with the Yolngu people, located in the East Arnhem Land in Australia, for the last 21 years. The Yolngu people of this region now have the highest preventable death rates in Australia, caused largely by chronic disease, poor diet and lifestyle, and cross-cultural marginalization.Timothy has managed the Hope for Health charity over its 10 years of development, while also working as the program's cross-cultural educator, and is also qualified as a biological scientist and as an Anthropologist. The charity is facing the potential that the Hope for Health solution may never be delivered in their communities due to lack of support from the Australian Government and major NGO's. This is partly due to a distrust and resistance to the low-carbohydrate diet approaches that Hope for Health takes, even though in Timothy's opinion, that is exactly the solution that is needed. In this episode of Prescribing Lifestyle, I share my reflections on the recent Low Carb Down Under conference in Melbourne. This annual event brought together doctors, nutritionists, and researchers in the low-carb community to share their knowledge and insights into metabolic health and nutrition. As always, I walked away with new ideas and experiences that I'm excited to bring to my patients and followers. Key Points Covered: Claire McDonnell – Low Carb Nutrition, ADHD, and Autism: Claire, a nutritionist from Brisbane, discussed how real food can improve symptoms in children with ADHD and autism. Her inspiring case study showed the power of good nutrition in helping children engage and interact. Despina Kolivas – Defeat Diabetes Research: Despina is a PhD researcher from La Trobe University, and her research on low-carb diets for diabetes patients, using the Defeat Diabetes app, showed significant improvements in blood glucose levels (HBA1C). I've been part of this study and have seen great results in my patients. Timothy Trudgen – Traditional Aboriginal Diets and Health: Timothy highlighted the health benefits of encouraging Aboriginal Australians to return to traditional diets rich in healthy fats, with notable health improvements in the communities he works with. Dr Ravi Gornall – Leptin and Weight Loss Resistance: Dr. Gornal opened up new insights into leptin resistance and its relationship with circadian health. She offered tips on how to optimize leptin by improving circadian rhythms through morning sunlight exposure and regulating blue light. Dr Louise Phillips – Advocating for Low Carb in GP Consultations: Dr. Phillips shared her approach to incorporating low-carb advice into quick GP consultations. Her tips and downloadable handouts on her website Low Carb Scripts are invaluable resources for fellow GPs. Dr Sanjeev Balakrishnan – Nutrition for Mental Health: Dr. Balakrishnan, a carnivore GP, discussed how insulin resistance impacts the brain and how ketogenic diets can improve mental health and cognitive function. Jayne Bullen – Influencing Health One Practitioner at a Time: From the Nutrition Network, Jane talked about the impact of training practitioners to promote low-carb nutrition. Her work has influenced millions, including myself. Professor Grant Schofield – Low Carb and Beyond: Professor Schofield shared his vast experience in the low-carb world and discussed his books What the Fat? and What the Fast?, which I highly recommend. Dr Sarah Zaman – Ketogenic Diets in Heart Failure Patients: Dr. Simon, a cardiologist, presented her research showing how the heart muscle thrives on ketones, particularly in patients with heart failure, improving their overall heart health. Dr Liz Fraser– Interpreting Studies and Trusting Evidence: Dr. Fraser explained the importance of interpreting evidence correctly and how case studies and personal experiences play a crucial role in validating low-carb diets, alongside randomized control trials. Dr. Paul Mason – Concussions and the Role of Ketones: Dr. Mason highlighted how ketogenic diets and exogenous ketones can help heal the brain after concussions and other traumatic brain injuries. Dr Peter Brukner– Reflections on the Low Carb Movement: Dr. Brukner reflected on his advocacy for low-carb diets and the positive strides made, including the collaboration with Diabetes Australia to promote low-carb nutrition as an option for managing diabetes. Avi is a General Practitioner, or family doctor, working in Melbourne, Australia. She has been a GP for 20 years and worked in the same clinic for over 15 years. She loves her job and looks after families, coughs, colds, diabetes, metabolic diseases, cancers, basically anything that comes into the door. Her journey started when her kids started to get older and she joined the gym to try to lose weight and get fit about 7 years ago. She started going to the gym, also took up running. She has since ran 2 full marathons. She joined the local gym for an 8 week body transformation challenge. The gym coach prescribed a set diet in which she had to measure a certain protein, carb and fat ratio. This made her lose fat and was basically a low carb diet. Since then, she has looked into science. She did a Low Carb for physician course by Low Carb Down Under and also courses by Nutrition Network and read many books. She also connected with others with similar interests such as Tracey McBeath, health coach. They set up a support group called Low Carb Melbourne. She has been a speaker for Tracey's Low Carb Lifestyle Long Weekend, telling her story. With work, I have been prescribing a low carb or keto lifestyle to my patients. I have reversed diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and other chronic conditions. Patients feel better, gain more energy and lose weight. Belinda Fettke describes herself as a health disruptor and change-agent challenging the health benefit claims of the last 50 years of low fat high carb messaging. She has been researching the Vested Interests and Religious Ideology shaping our ‘plant-biased' dietary and health guidelines since 2014. She has been on a fascinating journey of self-discovery over the last few years, researching the history of religious ideology and its intersection with commercial vested interests intent on demonising animal protein and fats. Their symbiotic relationship has had a huge influence on our ‘plant-biased' dietary and health guidelines. I am not anti-religion, nor am I prejudiced against vegetarian ideology as a personal choice, but I am concerned about dietary dogma that negatively impacts health outcomes and attempts to ‘silence' healthcare professionals from discussing evolutionary science. “Science evolves by being challenged, not by being followed. Once you see the health benefits of LCHF/Keto principles you can never unsee them.” Dr Gary Fettke Debunking myths and exploring the evolution of the Plant-Based vegetarian guidelines Firstly, I want to dispel the myths on Low Carbohydrate Healthy Fat principles (LCHF) by asking why ‘Nutrition Science' is the only science where those who view it through an evolutionary lens are mocked and persecuted, while those who ignore evolution are encouraged and supported? Secondly, I will show that the world-wide Dietary Guidelines are becoming ‘Vegetarian' … why else would recommending ‘Low Carbohydrate' and ‘Saturated Animal Fats' be condoned and punishable? Thirdly, I want to explain who the defenders of the Dietary Guidelines are and why ideology is just as influential as the vested interests of the ‘Food and Pharmaceutical Industries'. After discovering the pro cereal/grain/soy messaging, and the demonisation of animal protein and fats, were tied to industry and ideology I delved into the pages of history to discover “why?” I founded www.supportgary.com in August 2017 as a way of sharing my research and was first invited to speak at a Low Carb Down Under event later that year. Dr. Nadir Ali, an interventional cardiologist clears up confusion about LDL and answers questions like is LDL cholesterol really bad for us? Why does LDL cholesterol go up on a low carb diet? Are statins bad for you? Do statins prevent or cause heart disease? As a leading cardiologist in the high fat, low carb space, Dr. Nadir Ali has been paving the way in advocating that we should not fear high LDL cholesterol when other numbers are in line such as low triglycerides, low insulin and glucose, low inflammation, and high HDL cholesterol.Statins are commonly prescribed for elevated LDL cholesterol but as Dr. Ali discusses in this video, we may be treating high LDL all wrong. Statins have been shown to have significant side effects like cognitive and memory problems, fatigue, and muscle pain for many patients. Elevated LDL has been shown to be important for sex hormones, muscle function, cognition, and inflammation. "It's not about the science." Belinda Fettke is a former Registered Nurse, photographer and the proud co-founder of 'Nutrition For Life' in Launceston which provides medically based nutritional care around Tasmania and Australia. Belinda is also a staunch supporter of the health benefits of Low Carb, Healthy Fat eating and in recent years has taken a more central role in advocating LCHF following the investigation of her husband, Dr. Gary Fettke, by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The investigation focused on Gary’s qualifications to give nutritional advice. This investigation (which lasted for more than two years) resulted in Gary being issued a ‘caution’ and being advised; ”In particular, that he does not provide specific advice or recommendations on the subject of nutrition and how it relates to the management of diabetes or the treatment and/or prevention of cancer.” Gary was later cleared of all charges and issued a formal apology from AHPRA. I first met Pete at the 2019 Low Carb Down Under conference on the Gold Coast in September. Pete's story is incredible. A world champion athlete afflicted with chronic fatigue and auto immune conditions. No one could help. He tried for years to find some answers. Finally he did get help, and it came in the form of a carnivore diet. An athlete fuelling on no carbs? How can that be possible? Listen to find out. This week on Low Carb Conversations with FNTPs Leah, Holly and Amber, Leah and Holly are joined by Dr. Pran Yoganathan. Dr. Pran graduated in medicine from University of Otago in New Zealand. His training in internal medicine was undertaken in the Westmead Public Hospital (near Sydney, Australia). His Advanced training in Gastroenterology was completed in the major teaching hospitals in South Western Sydney. In this episode, Dr. Pran shares his wisdom and clinical experience regarding the — sometimes overlooked — importance of diet in relation to GI health. He shares his own experience with overcoming metabolic syndrome and how he learned to heal himself with nutrition and intermittent fasting. Looking at plant based products and the vegan movement as a way to help the planet, we flip the coin and discuss toxic chemicals found in many plant-based meat products that are problematic from a GI perspective as well as GMOs, inflammation, the gut microbiome and dietary changes that accompany aging. Dr. Pran also shares his professional experience in the importance of balanced blood sugars and insulin in the treatment of endometriosis. Since this podcast was recorded the event at Low Carb Down Under has been postponed. We will let you know when it is rescheduled. "It's so easy to skip meals when eating keto." - Jimmy Moore When this Best-Of episode was originally released, our host Jimmy Moore had just returned from his third trip to Australia in four years! While he was there, Jimmy shared 12 lectures in 14 days with lots of information about ketogenic diets, Paleo, and healthy living. But he also provided an exciting new lecture entitled “Not Just Another F-Word: My Experiences With Fasting” sharing all about his conversion from a fast foe into a bona fide fasting fanatic! This lecture was recorded in Brisbane, Australia in September 2016 at the Low Carb Down Under event. It details all of the N=1 experiments Jimmy participated in that culminated in a series of longer fasts which he shares fully about in the podcast today. And don’t miss Jimmy’s book with Dr. Jason Fung on this subject: The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting. While Jimmy is gone on a much needed and deserved sabbatical for six months to rest and recuperate, we will be bringing you the best of the best from the vast archive of shows that Jimmy has accumulated over the last 15 years. We also will be airing shows from his wildly popular JIMMY RANTS live show that originated on Instagram Live and now resides at JimmyRants.com.
Carnivore, Low Histamine Diet. Can it get much more selective? haha. Actually, I find it super easy and don't mind it, less choice in my day simplifies my life :) And it's especially easy since I am now feeling much healthier and have more energy, so EVERYTHING IS EASIER! I've had muscle and mind fatigue, and brain fog issues, since I was a teenager, gut issues since my early 20's, skin issues since then too, achy joints from 30years old, and everything worsening together into my mid 30's. Going carnivore removed most of these issues, at least in severity. Dr Paul Mason was a huge help to my mum and I in this respect. He has some brilliant presentations on Youtube from Low Carb Down Under conferences, and Carnivory Con. However eating what seemed like the same foods day after day, I was still getting some symptoms back, and I couldn't figure it out. UNTIL... Until I watched Georgia Ede MD on youtube talk about histamines from a clip published 5 years ago. Histamine became my new interest, and I added that to my already "limited" carnivore diet. I had been eating aged meats, and loved them.. but once I heard about histamine in aged food products I instantly recognised my patterns of fatigue and skin problems with times I had eaten meat that was not as fresh. Combine that with yoghurt or hard cheese and lots of bacteria equals lots of histamine. This explains why I can have some, in small amounts, but it is the OVERDOSE of histamine which is an issue, not histamine itself. So consider when you eat something high in histamines, (aged food eg. wine, cheese, yoghurt, cured/aged meat) how do you react if you eat a lot of these products? If you have gut issues it is likely histamine overload is playing a part, or more accurately, has become a problem due to your gut dysbiosis, and is contributing when histamine levels rise. Leaky gut is tough to deal with, so many things can be affecting you, but trying a low histamine carnivore diet is a great place to start, then reintroduce foods one by one every few days. HOWEVER, as my mum and I have found out, just because you can tolerate it, does not mean you can have it frequently or in large amounts - keep in mind it is in the DOSE that is your poison, not the food itself. An overdose of histamine can be more likely after added stress, i.e. stressful events - exercise, heat, poor sleep, late nights, other food combinations, etc. which all make your body more REACTIVE and your gut lining more PERMEABLE If you have experienced autoimmune symptoms, you will understand your cells REACTION is the problem, so do what you can to calm your cells and nervous system- vagus nerve exercise are an excellent addition to everyday habits to help lower you Sympathetic Nervous System (and cellular response). Buy meat the day the butcher gets it, freeze it, then defrost quickly and cook quickly (not 24hr slow cook). Histamine builds up in food at any temperature other than freezing, and is not removed by cooking - so freeze leftovers. Lots more information on my podcast about my low histamine carnivore diet. And this is just a snapshot in time at how I'm currently eating, and what is working right now for me. Please send me any questions or personal anecdotes over social media @petejjacobs or email pete@liveyourownfit.com
Today's episode is unlike any of the other episodes that a regular part of Focus(ed) Podcast! A while back, as part of my 2019 goals update episode, I shared where I am at with my weight loss goals for the year and because of that it sparked interest for me to talk a little bit more about what I've been doing and learning this past year. Just over a year ago, Paul and I both started learning more about low carb/no sugar/ketogenic dietary changes. Throughout the course of learning and applying what we have learned, we have both dropped considerable amounts of weight, feel better than we ever have and haven't been hungry, cranky or on the struggle bus. There are very specific reasons for WHY all of that is, and I go over a lot of that in the episode! Instead of me just hoping on and sharing everything, I had two friends (thank you so much Christina and Jessica!!) come on the episode with me and interview me. The conversational style was great and I am so appreciative that they spent the time to do this! In this first episode of the 'Doc & the Coach', Dr Jackie Montefiore and I answer your health questions, from a doctors perspective and a coaches perspective. Today we looked at: 1. What should we eat for optimal health given all the conflicting information out there? Jackie mentions this article in the BMJ https://www.bmj.com/content/365/bmj.l1451 2. Is there a link between meat and cancer? To understand how epidemiological studies work, especially in relation to meat and processed meats, this YouTube video by Nina Teicholz is a good one https://youtu.be/1rz-8H_i1wA and this one by Dr Ken Berry https://youtu.be/Qwyjo-NgQsE 3. Explain what 'keto' is 4. How low do I need to take my 'carbs' 5. Is it necessary to 'count' macros? 6. Do we need to eat before we exercise? 7. Dr Jackie shares what she fuels her body with while she is training for a marathon. Jackie has followed Dr Phil Maffetone's MAF method for improving her cardiovascular endurance. His website is here: https://philmaffetone.com/ 8. What is fat adapted training, and how do we do this? 9. Jackie and I both share our fat adapted training stories 10. Intermittent fasting. What is it, how is it done, why is it worth doing? 11. Do we need to take vitamins and minerals on keto? This discussion includes the importance of electrolytes. The study Jackie mentions by Caryn Zinn can be found here: https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/8/2/e018846 Disclaimer: This podcast contains general information relating to various medical conditions and their treatment. Marty Kendall is an engineer, a speaker, and a writer. He’s analyzed a bunch of data and built some cool, free technology. He’s also brought a lot of people together who are working on cutting edge, practical information. He runs a group where some of the smartest people in nutrition are interacting daily, sharing information and studies and clinical experience. This includes Dr. Ted Naiman who was my first guest and who we bring up a few times in this episode. These are not anti-carb people, they aren’t dogmatic, they don’t let other interests or beliefs enter the picture. They're after information and truth and are working towards healing people and changing lives. They’re coming at this from all sides and from all over the world. Some are doing the research, some are just interpreting it and thinking about it from new angles. Ted is in the clinic daily, putting it into practice and reversing diabetes. Marty is building tools and thinking about it from his engineering perspective. I love people who think about it this way - I’m like a broken record, because I’m an engineer too. We need to stop thinking that only a doctor can be an expert on nutrition. Why would they be? They have extremely little or no nutrition specific training. They are brilliant when it comes to a million other things, but they aren't the end-all be-all of nutrition They can be though. But so can an engineer who dedicates years of their life to researching a topic. Not everyone who does this will be smart or correct, but some are. These are the people I get on the podcast. Ivor Cummins, Tucker Goodrich, Gabor Erdosi, Dave Feldman soon, and now Marty Kendall. There’s many more as well, and I’ll continue to find them. Enough of my ranting - just a quick word on the Food Lies documentary. It’s going really well and being pushed forward daily. I just booked our trip to Maryland to film with Dr. Bill Schindler. Go back to listen to that episode if you missed it. There’s only about 11 days left on the Indiegogo.com crowdfunding page. Please go there to preorder the film. There’s a link in the show notes in your podcast app and on peak-human.com. You also can search for Food Lies on Indiegogo or go to FoodLies.org to learn more. Now please take a listen to Marty and I talk about my favorite topic - nutrient density. http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Show Notes Marty Kendall runs the great site http://optimisingnutrition.com and the facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1419823171384689/ Ted Naiman, Robb Wolf, Luis Villasenor, and Tyler Cartwright (ketogains) all collaborate with him to figure this nutrition stuff out What is nutrient density? Matt Lalonde’s presentation at AHS 2012 https://youtu.be/HwbY12qZcF4 Cronometer is a great app to track food and nutrients https://cronometer.com Nutrient dense foods are less insulinogenic, more satiating, and less energy dense Try to quantify things because nutrition is confusing enough I disagree with Joel Fuhrman’s nutrient density scoring system His version of nutrient density is variable and is based on what you personally aren’t getting enough of If you’re getting enough micronutrients, you’re very likely to be getting all the protein you need Can’t make a perfect diet because too many factors - season, cost, preference, etc. Some of the most nutrient dense and satiating foods are leafy greens, fish eggs, seafood, liver We’ve always sought after nutritious foods throughout history, with or without knowing it He mentions my recent episode with Tucker Goodrich https://www.peak-human.com/home/tucker-goodrich-on-vegetable-oils-being-at-the-heart-of-modern-disease on seed oils and how unnatural and energy dense they are Modern foods are engineered to trick us - they tastes delicious, but have no nutrition The book The Dorito Effect chronicles this https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22609354-the-dorito-effect?from_search=true It’s a cliche for a reason - eat real foods Trying to formulate a low insulin diet for his wife with type 1 diabetes that is also nutrient dense What are the most nutrient dense foods? Amazing benefits of seafood Modern food is dog food - stuffed with cheap grains and vegetable oils with huge profit margins for big food manufacturers at the expense of the consumer’s health Satiety Used 587,000 day worth of publicly available food data from MyFitnessPal to do some data crunching Fed state, glucagon, and type 1 diabetes closed system insulin pump How to eat less and manage hunger? He will be joining Low Carb Conversations for a few episodes in January. Sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s episode! Our Guests this week on Low Carb Conversations with Leah Williamson NTP and Guests are Husband and Wife Gary and Belinda Fettke. Gary Fettke is an Australian orthopaedic surgeon, low carb, healthy fat advocate and you might recall he was the Doctor reprimanded by medical watchdog AHPRA (which is the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) for suggesting his patients eat low-carb diets and AHPRA said he was not qualified to give nutritional advice. His wife, Belinda Fettke, also a low carb healthy fat advocate took over their website No Fructose and social media accounts to keep the low carb healthy fat message alive. Listen in as Gary and Belinda share their story. BMI is underestimating obesity in Australia, waist circumference needs to be measured too Study: Poor People Eating Properly would Accelerate Global Warming First up is an article around Body Mass Index (BMI) and whether we are underestimating the prevalence of obesity in the Australian population by using BMI as the measurement and that waistlines of Australian adults are increasing faster than body weight. Why is BMI not accurate and should be measuring waist circumference or something else? The second article is around a study that claims if poor people were to eat real food then it would accelerate climate change. Listen to the Fettke's response on this! In the article Belinda and Gary quote article where Paul Behrens is quoted as saying: “Of all the foods, beef has the biggest impact on global warming. Raising cows for beef demands 28 times more land, 11 times more water, and five times more greenhouse gases than other animal-based foods like chicken, pork, and dairy. Fertilizer and cow dung also run into rivers and cause toxic algal blooms that kill plants and fish” Behrens says. Plus, “cattle have this digestion process in their stomachs that releases a lot of methane, which is a very powerful greenhouse gas,” he adds. Yes, cow farts contribute to climate change. https://www.vice.com/en_id/article/8xmqpb/people-who-eat-healthy-are-also-doing-the-planet-a-big-favor And remember our secret health headline! While at Low-Carb Down Under in Gold Coast last week, Richard Morris interviewed Dr. Peter Brukner, a well-known sports-medicine physician in Australia. Peter is leading a war on sugar with a campaign called Sugar By Half, aimed at reducing the sugar hiding in industrial foods (schools, hospitals, etc.) by 50%. He talks about working with sports teams, advocating a low-carb diet, and getting great results. Lots of great nuggets in this show.
