Welcome to the podcast! Today, I am thrilled to have a true pioneer in the field of metabolic health, Dr. Robert Lustig, MD, joining us. Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist and Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is best known for his groundbreaking work on the intersection of diet, obesity, and metabolic disease, particularly his deep dive into the role of sugar as a driving force behind many of today's chronic health issues. As the author of several influential books, including Fat Chance, The Hacking of the American Mind and Metabolical, Dr. Lustig has been a vocal advocate for public health, helping to raise awareness about the harmful effects of processed foods, particularly refined sugars. His research has been instrumental in shifting the conversation around nutrition, focusing on the biological impacts of sugar and the ways it contributes to insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. His most recent paper entitled Obesogens, A Unifying Theory for the Global Rise in Obesity in the International Journal of Obesity - Nature is a ground stirring take on the current research. We are excited to explore his latest insights into metabolic health and the science of obesity, and how we can apply this knowledge to improve our own well-being. Let's welcome Dr. Lustig to the show! Dr. M

VYS0035 | The Weird Review of the Year 2023 Pt.2 - Show Notes Concluding their post-mortem of the bloated carcass of 2023 looking for any residual traces of weirdness Hine and Buckley witness it hurtling from June to December like a reckless driver, drunk on curiosity, swerving to avoid a shadowy figure that was never there, crashing through the windshield of wanton deception to land face down and muttering incoherently on the cold, hard tarmac of truth. As they accompany this moribund year through the bardo they encounter David Grusch and Ryan Graves giving dubious, testimony about their UAP encounters, an unexplained encounter at the bottom of a well, a Russian man drilling into his own skull to try to control his dreams, a couple of dry little guys being dragged out before the Mexican Congress and the threat of desecration to a 30-year-old Vayse sacred text... If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.If you're feeling frustrated with your Pickleballs development, there is a way out. That way out is through understanding the picture of Pickleball, understanding that Pickleball has a design to it. There's a beautiful puzzle that is created by the rules and the court that we play on.What is your puzzle box cover? What's your approach to solving the puzzle? The word of the week this week is puzzle and the FOSS approach is a way to navigate that puzzle to put those pieces together. In this episode I explain why the FOSS approach is so helpful and why it's something that you should add to your thinking about pickleball and to your approach to this game.  In the riff, I'm going to vent a little bit as a coach from my vantage point as a trainer, as a Pickleball coach, and share with you some frustrations that I've experienced as a player and a person who wants other players to do the best they can in their game. Abstract: Age-related degeneration of white matter (WM) tissue in the brain has been found to underlie progressive cognitive declines in healthy populations. Understanding and predicting these changes is necessary to building a more unified model of the aging brain and improving interventions. We posit that regional hypoperfusion in the WM precedes deteriorating WM integrity, as evidenced by studies demonstrating relationships between declining cortical perfusion and the development of WM hyperintensities. This remains an understudied area of WM aging, in part due to technical challenges in quantifying WM perfusion. This study seeks to examine tract-wise associations between WM microstructural integrity and perfusion parameters in the Human Connectome Project - Aging (HCP-A) participants. Perfusion was measured by cerebral blood flow (CBF) and arterial transit time (ATT), while microstructural integrity was measured by fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD). Their associations are assessed in ten major bilateral WM tracts. Results show that WM perfusion-microstructure relationships vary both by tract and by sex. We identify consistent patterns of associations between perfusion and microstructure that suggest the presence of multiple distinct stages of deterioration, with female subjects demonstrating more tracts in advanced stages of decline. Additionally, ATT appears to be the earliest indicator of WM declines, preceding age-related differences in WM microstructure in several tracts. This study contributes compelling evidence to the vascular hypothesis of WM degeneration, and highlights the utility of blood-flow timing rather than CBF as an early marker of aging. Abstract: Progressive age-related changes in white matter morphometry and microstructure have been found throughout the brain. Both declines in white matter (WM) volume and deterioration of microstructural integrity have been observed. Predicting these changes across WM tracts and building an integrated model of age-related WM trajectories has proven challenging. While tractwise differences in volume and microstructural declines are common targets of investigation, there has been relatively little exploration into other attributes of tract morphology or its relation to microstructural measures in vivo. This study seeks to examine ten WM tracts for tract-wise differences in WM volume, length, the ratio of volume to length (VLR), and microstructural integrity as measured by fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) using diffusion MRI data from the Human Connectome Project in Aging (HCP-A). From these measures, we analyzed relationships between morphometry and microstructure in the aging brain with the goal of laying the foundation for a unified model of age-related changes that relates WM microstructure/morphometry and developmental trajectories. Results indicated wide variation in rates and patterns of decline between tracts, as well as tract-specific interactions between tract VLR and microstructure. Robust sex differences were also identified. Our findings demonstrate the need for further exploration of the mechanisms behind both macro- and microstructural differences across the aging brain. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.12.519538v1?rss=1 Authors: Hahn, M., Wei, X. Abstract: Perceptual biases are widely regarded as a window into the computational principles underlying human perception. To understand these biases, previous work has proposed a number of conceptually different and even seemingly contradicting ingredients, including attraction to a Bayesian prior, repulsion from the prior due to efficient coding, and central tendency effects on a bounded range. We present a unifying Bayesian theory of biases in perceptual estimation. We theoretically demonstrate an additive decomposition of perceptual biases into attraction to a prior, repulsion away from regions with high encoding precision, and regression away from the boundary. The results reveal a simple and universal rule for predicting the direction of perceptual biases. Our theory accounts for, and leads to new understanding of biases in the perception of a variety of stimulus attributes, including orientation, color, and magnitude. THE THESIS: There is not an idea, policy or procedure being pushed by The Party that does not stand in opposition to God.  THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Jesus reminds people of God's abundant blessings through faith Matthew 14:13-21 Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. The Lord, Jesus demonstrates that the prohibition against murder still stands . . . and then some! Matthew 5:21-22 Murder 21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca [a biblical word meaning ' worthless' or ' empty' Word origin. from Aramaic.],' is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. Jesus showed his love for children, their value to him. Matthew 19: 13-15 The Little Children and Jesus 13 Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. Luke 18:15-17 The Little Children and Jesus 15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” [AUDIO] - Pastor Jim Putman on what Jesus demonstrated (and still demonstrates) about how he views children Vs. how the current world views them THE NEWS & COMMENT: Let's compare this story--and let's just assume it's true for now--to the stories and commentary that follows. If we assume this is true, are we ready to accept the calculated, organized ungodly evil actions of The Party over the supposed actions of a flawed man, at a heated time?  [AUDIO] - Cassidy Hutchinson testifies that she was told that as then-President Donald Trump was being driven back to the White House after the Jan. 6 rally that he demanded to be taken to the Capitol and tried to grab the steering wheel from a Secret Service agent On the topic of life and murder, The Party (and this is where Mitch and much of the GOP have yet to go), The Party isn't asking for rare cases where abortion can save the life of a would-be mother, they are demanding industrial-scale, child-sacrfifice scope killing of babies at any age. And, in pure defiance of God's Word, members of The Party like Joe Scarborough and Al Sharpton distort God's Word to the point of parody [AUDIO] - Hillary Clinton: "I went to law school with [Justice Thomas]. This year, Nature celebrates its 150th birthday. To mark this anniversary we’re rebroadcasting episodes from our PastCast series, highlighting key moments in the history of science.Earthquakes, volcanoes, the formation of mountains; we understand all these phenomena in terms of plate tectonics (large-scale movements of the Earth’s crust). But when a German geologist first suggested that continents move, in the 1910s, people dismissed it as a wild idea. In this podcast, we hear how a ‘wild idea’ became the unifying theory of Earth sciences. In the 1960s, data showed that the sea floor was spreading, pushing continents apart. Fred Vine recalls the reaction when he published these findings in Nature. This episode was first broadcast in September 2013.From the archiveMagnetic Anomalies Over Oceanic Ridges, by Vine & Matthews See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Marty Kendall is an engineer, a speaker, and a writer. He’s analyzed a bunch of data and built some cool, free technology. He’s also brought a lot of people together who are working on cutting edge, practical information. He runs a group where some of the smartest people in nutrition are interacting daily, sharing information and studies and clinical experience. This includes Dr. Ted Naiman who was my first guest and who we bring up a few times in this episode. These are not anti-carb people, they aren’t dogmatic, they don’t let other interests or beliefs enter the picture. They're after information and truth and are working towards healing people and changing lives. They’re coming at this from all sides and from all over the world. Some are doing the research, some are just interpreting it and thinking about it from new angles. Ted is in the clinic daily, putting it into practice and reversing diabetes. Marty is building tools and thinking about it from his engineering perspective. I love people who think about it this way - I’m like a broken record, because I’m an engineer too. We need to stop thinking that only a doctor can be an expert on nutrition. Why would they be? They have extremely little or no nutrition specific training. They are brilliant when it comes to a million other things, but they aren't the end-all be-all of nutrition They can be though. But so can an engineer who dedicates years of their life to researching a topic. Not everyone who does this will be smart or correct, but some are. These are the people I get on the podcast. Ivor Cummins, Tucker Goodrich, Gabor Erdosi, Dave Feldman soon, and now Marty Kendall. There’s many more as well, and I’ll continue to find them. Enough of my ranting - just a quick word on the Food Lies documentary. It’s going really well and being pushed forward daily. I just booked our trip to Maryland to film with Dr. Bill Schindler. Go back to listen to that episode if you missed it. There’s only about 11 days left on the Indiegogo.com crowdfunding page. Please go there to preorder the film. There’s a link in the show notes in your podcast app and on peak-human.com. You also can search for Food Lies on Indiegogo or go to FoodLies.org to learn more. Now please take a listen to Marty and I talk about my favorite topic - nutrient density. http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   Show Notes Marty Kendall runs the great site http://optimisingnutrition.com and the facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1419823171384689/ Ted Naiman, Robb Wolf, Luis Villasenor, and Tyler Cartwright (ketogains) all collaborate with him to figure this nutrition stuff out What is nutrient density? Matt Lalonde’s presentation at AHS 2012 https://youtu.be/HwbY12qZcF4 Cronometer is a great app to track food and nutrients https://cronometer.com Nutrient dense foods are less insulinogenic, more satiating, and less energy dense Try to quantify things because nutrition is confusing enough I disagree with Joel Fuhrman’s nutrient density scoring system His version of nutrient density is variable and is based on what you personally aren’t getting enough of If you’re getting enough micronutrients, you’re very likely to be getting all the protein you need Can’t make a perfect diet because too many factors - season, cost, preference, etc. Some of the most nutrient dense and satiating foods are leafy greens, fish eggs, seafood, liver We’ve always sought after nutritious foods throughout history, with or without knowing it He mentions my recent episode with Tucker Goodrich https://www.peak-human.com/home/tucker-goodrich-on-vegetable-oils-being-at-the-heart-of-modern-disease on seed oils and how unnatural and energy dense they are Modern foods are engineered to trick us - they tastes delicious, but have no nutrition The book The Dorito Effect chronicles this https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22609354-the-dorito-effect?from_search=true It’s a cliche for a reason - eat real foods Trying to formulate a low insulin diet for his wife with type 1 diabetes that is also nutrient dense What are the most nutrient dense foods? Amazing benefits of seafood Modern food is dog food - stuffed with cheap grains and vegetable oils with huge profit margins for big food manufacturers at the expense of the consumer’s health Satiety Used 587,000 day worth of publicly available food data from MyFitnessPal to do some data crunching Fed state, glucagon, and type 1 diabetes closed system insulin pump How to eat less and manage hunger? I’ll have some more guests talking about this side of things very soon. So now this is the time when on other podcasts you’d be hearing annoying ads for products you don't care about. Denise is a joyful ball of energy and talent. She speaks at conferences, writes books, and is an all around great person. I love her view on things and her balanced approach, but she does lean towards the high carb diet side. But here’s the thing - she advocates eating a lot of nutrient dense animal products, no sugar, grains, or vegetable oils - so a lot to agree with there. I want everyone to hear this to see an opposite approach and see if it might work for you. The Unifying Theory of Nutrition says things can work on both sides - so here’s the other one. I still think it’s insane to expect people to live like a tribesman in the bolivian wilderness. You’re asking all of America to eat an ultra-clean Vegan diet plus organ meats. To maybe 99% of the population that sounds awful. Like the worst ever. I didn’t agree on everything but I went along with it. In retrospect I could have challenged her more and I also want to see some studies that actually show this dietary approach works in a scientific setting. I could have brought up more of the points supporting low carb diet showing much better results in clinical trials and on lowering risk factors for heart disease, etc. but I didn’t want to argue and we already yammered on for almost 90 min. So support the Food Lies film on Indiegogo and let’s hear what Denise is all about!   Show notes Famous for her teardowns of things like the China Study, and vegan propaganda like Forks Over Knives and the book How Not to Die http://deniseminger.com Her story of ruining her health as a vegan Questioning the China Study and blowing over night She always questions dogmatic thinking in the nutrition world From her book “we leave the classroom woefully unequipped with the thinking skills that matter most: how to balance open–mindedness with skepticism, how to identify bias, and how to challenge assumptions – including our own – in a way that’s truly objective.” Ancel keys and the story of how began thinking fat was bad for us The McGovern Report which prescribed America with a low-fat, high-carb diet. Why was meat demonized when it was and still is so highly regarded as prized source of nutrition? Confounding variables with meat-eaters. What are you eating with the meat? Lifestyles are very different for different groups Why did we ever think vegetable oils were good for us? America does not actually eat low fat. Humans can actually do well on a true low fat, whole foods diet How does this other metabolic state work? Big food would ruin things if they got the go-ahead from the government to do low-carb high fat I don’t believe it’s realistic at all to expect people to eat this way in America. You’re asking people to eat a Vegan diet plus organ meats What would you actually be eating on this sort of diet? If you’re vegan or vegetarian this doesn’t work Do vegetables have anti-nutrients or other toxins we should be worried about? Is fiber necessary? Nutrient density and satiety Problem with people eating all the time Killer combo of fat and sugar… it’s irresistible So how do we figure this all out? It’s confusing when 2 totally different paradigms seem to work. This week on the MashReads Podast, we talk with Andy Weir, author of 'The Martian,' about his new novel 'Artemis.' The novel follows Jazz Bashara, a space smuggler who has grown up on Artemis, the first city on the moon. When Jazz gets a heist job from one of Artemis' wealthiest citizens, she thinks she's hit the jackpot. However, what Jazz believes to be a tricky but solvable task soon transforms into a mission that not only threatens Jazz's future but also the future of Artemis itself. And as always, we close the show with recommendations: Andy recommends Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. "RPO just captured. It reached out and grabbed my right by the nostalgia and pulled me in." (And Andy Weir actually wrote a Ready Player One fanfiction titled Lacero.) MJ recommends this "A Unifying Theory of Bops," a chart someone tweeted that rights pop music on a scale of whether it's a bop or not. "It's this weird chart with all of these great songs ranked." (You can also check out MJ's explainer on bops here.) Also mentioned on the show: Andy Weir's breakdown of the economics of building a city on the moon.

Download  |  Subscribe (FREE) In this episode, Rev. Beverly Gibson and Johnny Gwin continue to discuss the issue of the nature (and confusion) of Jesus as both human and divine. Using Matthew's gospel of the account of the Pharisee's Lawyer trying to trap Jesus with the question of "What is the greatest commandment," Rev. Gibson reveals that there is more to the greatest commandments. Jesus answered "loving God with all your heart, soul and mind" is the greatest commandment but he also added a second part to his answer, the "Golden Rule." Loving your neighbor as yourself is the coat hanger in which all the rules and laws of God is shaped and formed. Is understanding the letter and the spirit of the "Golden Rule" the lynchpin that connects all the lessons, laws, and ideas in Christianity? What would the world be like if more of us asked the question "Am I being loving" in all of our deeds and relationships? In our present cultural moment, we have gone beyond uncomfortable silence with discourse. We have been actively resistant and hostile to silence and have been moved straight to outright rage and protest when we hear things that trigger internal opposition to ideas and theories. Thinking needs the head and the heart. When we quit listening to someone because they don't "see things like us" we might be doing ourselves a disservice to understanding something more or in a deeper way. Jesus had a way of using "silence" in his teachings. Not only is there wisdom and faith in his words but also in his "between the lines" delivery if his messages. Jesus left his detractors silenced when he was challenged. He gave those that wanted to destroy him the time and respect to at least hear them out, and then after a pause of powerful silence lovingly gave them the chance to hear and absorb the truth that he was freely teaching to everyone to turn people toward God. Takeaway: This week "Just Give 5 Minutes" to prayer, yourself and your neighbors. Especially those neighbors that think and see our world much different than you. Readings: Deuteronomy 34:1-12 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 Matthew 22:34-46   Thanks for listening. In the previous episode, you heard about truth and love, separate and belonging, and powerful and relational. Each of those combinations of words are an excellent way to think about the Image of God. When you review scriptures, both Old and New Testament, you will find the context typically supports those combination of words. And, this same concept is seen throughout life - in movies, in religions, in personality tests, and, obviously in the design of men and women.
