The first Black Miss America, Vanessa Williams, was crowned in Atlantic City on 17th September, 1983, with the usual fanfare. But within ten months, she had returned her crown, following a nude photo scandal. She had already received hate mail and even death threats - some from racist whites who hated seeing a Black Miss America, others from Black critics who felt her light skin and blue eyes played into white beauty standards. But then, without her consent, Penthouse announced it would publish explicit photos of Vanessa taken years earlier when she was an aspiring teenage model. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how Williams rebuilt her career from scratch, via Disney, Broadway, hit songs, and movies; discover the moment the pageant formally apologised to her, after 32 years; and trace the overt and covert racism in Miss America's long history… Further Reading: • ‘On Saturday night Vanessa Williams became the first black woman crowned Miss America' (UPI, 1983): https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/09/18/On-Saturday-night-Vanessa-Williams-became-the-first-black-woman-crowned-Miss-America/9839432705600/ • ‘Why Vanessa Williams Gave Up Her Miss America Crown' (TIME, 2015): https://time.com/3961120/miss-america-scandal-vanessa-williams/ • ‘Miss America 1984: Crowning Moment' (NBC, 1983): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwBmoNXrr0w Love the show? I found all of that—and more—through this program. As Miss Kentucky's Teen 2017, I earned the Miss America's Teen Presidential Scholarship and pursued a degree in Musical Theatre at The University of Alabama. Surrounded by fellow titleholders who became lifelong friends, I stepped onto stages I had only dreamed of and grew into a confident, determined woman who knows she doesn't need a crown to make a difference. As Miss New York, my mission is to close the literacy gap by empowering children to read and equipping them with the tools to succeed. My community service initiative, Read → Lead → Succeed, was born from my own story—when my family lost our home at age 12, reading became my safe haven. From cookbooks to classics, books offered me consistency and hope during a time of chaos. Today, I bring that same hope to children through after-school programs in Title I schools, one-on-one tutoring with Reading Partners, and a national reading challenge, Book Buddies, which helps kids develop comprehension and conflict resolution skills through reading.Outside of advocacy, I'm a career fundraiser and MBA candidate at NYU, specializing in leadership and change management. I help donors build legacies through scholarships and credit the Miss America Opportunity for guiding me toward this path. My ultimate goal is to serve as Executive Vice President of Programs for a major philanthropic foundation, championing educational equity through revitalized libraries and programming for underserved schools.I am deeply honored to serve as Miss New York, not for recognition, but as a vessel to uplift the people and communities I love. This year, I'm committed to expanding literacy opportunities across New York's 700 school districts and raising a record-breaking amount for the Miss New York Organization. Most of all, I hope every person I meet—whether in person or online—doesn't just know Miss New York, but feels like they are friends with her.Follow us on Instagram @oneworldonefuturepodcast to be the first to know when new episodes drop! Some people carry a quiet confidence that makes you lean in—not because they're trying to impress, but because they've lived it. That's Shannon Bream. As the anchor of FOX News Sunday and chief legal correspondent for FOX News, Shannon brings credibility and calm to every conversation she's in—and this one was no different. We talked about her journey from practicing law to starting from scratch in journalism, why getting fired early on was a blessing in disguise, and how she navigated the pressure of pageant culture while building confidence in her own voice. She also opened up about her early marriage, when her husband was battling a major health challenge. Instead of pulling them apart, that experience pulled them closer. Through financial struggles, uncertainty, and a total career reset, Shannon leaned on her faith and found new purpose along the way. If anyone knows about the underbelly of the beauty industry, it's Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri. Nina's documentary COMPLEXion (available on Prime Video) sheds a light on her personal experience with colorism, which led to a deeper dive into international beauty standards and how companies create new insecurities just to get us to buy more and more stuff. “So I am silenced. I do not own my own truth. I do not own my own reality. I've had movies and miniseries made about me. I couldn't participate. I can't even tell you if they're accurate. I may never own my own voice, but I am going to make sure that other people do.”Gretchen Carlson is a renowned journalist, a bestselling author, and now an internationally recognized advocate for women's rights in the workplace. Gretchen's life has taken so many twists and turns—from youth violinist to Miss America to journalist to women's rights advocate.I was interested in learning more about how Gretchen navigated her non-linear journey. What does it mean to embody true beauty in a world obsessed with appearances? In this inspiring episode of the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, Patti Garibay is joined by none other than Miss America* 2025, Abbie Stockard, to explore how faith, girlhood, and purpose can shine even in the most public of arenas. With grace and conviction, Abbie shares how her identity in Christ shapes everything—from her passion for pediatric nursing and her advocacy for Cystic Fibrosis, to her bold stance on inner beauty and self-worth in the pageant world. A proud Alabama native and senior at Auburn University, Abbie has used her platform to raise over $200,000 for CF research and promote healthy habits in children through her “High Five for Kids” initiative. But what sets Abbie apart isn't just her crown—it's her heart. With remarkable vulnerability and insight, she opens up about the fire God placed in her belly and how her family and faith community nurtured that calling from a young age. Patti and Abbie tackle big questions moms are asking today: How can we help our daughters dream big while keeping Christ at the center? How do we preserve the innocence and wonder of girlhood in a world that pushes girls to grow up too fast? And how can we teach our daughters to find their worth not in the mirror or on social media, but in the unchanging truth of God's Word? This episode is a heartfelt celebration of young women who boldly pursue their God-given purpose—and a powerful reminder to mothers that your influence matters deeply. Whether your daughter dreams of a stage, a stethoscope, or something in between, this conversation will encourage you to walk alongside her with intentionality, love, and unshakable faith. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from a young woman who's not just wearing a crown—but living out her calling to reflect the beauty and goodness of the King. Content Warning! This podcast is not suitable for children and contains sensitive content. Please read the entire description. The last time Angela saw her brother, Albert, he kissed her belly. Angela was nine months pregnant and had just asked Albert to be the Godfather of her baby. That was the last time Angela saw Albert alive. Weeks later Angela traveled from California to her homeland of Hawaii (she had been crowned Miss America, Hawaii years earlier). As Angela stood at the security gate holding her new baby, she prepared to board a plane to attend her late brother's funeral. Angela's brother died much too young when he took his own life. Angela now understood the sacred value of life “from womb to tomb” in a profound way. She was caught between the glorious joy of new life and the indescribable agony of sudden and tragic death. In this final Lenten Podcast, learn how Christ meets us when we are on our knees and have no idea how to stand. Be blessed with new life by the grace of God, even when you think it may be impossible.
There is bouncing back after adversity, and then there is: Vanessa Williams. The talented multi-hyphenate was only 21 years old when she became the first Black woman to be crowned Miss America. Yet a controversy surrounding the release of unauthorized nude photos led to her ultimately relinquishing her title 10 months into her reign. When doors were closed to her following the scandal, she fought her way back to an impressive and decorated career: Williams built decades of success as an actor and recording artist, selling 25 million records worldwide, starring in over 100 roles in television, film, and on Broadway - and being nominated for a Tony and multiple Emmy and Grammy Awards. Vanessa Williams speaks with host Alec Baldwin about the death threats she received after she won Miss America, how the work of Stephen Sondheim inspires the type of art she wishes to make, and what it’s like working with Elton John on her next big project.
