The story of The Cure is a long tale, stretching back to the 1970s, which may surprise some people. Markus leads an early days exploration, as he and Ray weigh in on their personal intersections with the band. As they discuss the music, the Imbalanced Boys also identify future sonic signatures, in early recordings, that led to their massive, and continuing, success! There's focus on Robert Smith, the central, and sole continuous figure in the group, as part of the telling of the story. We considered a shotgun 5 Favorites, but thought, maybe we can do that in our next episode about The Cure! Weigh in on the comments section on Spotify, or on Facebook! HOLLYWOOD - Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom author Joel C. Scoberg is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other writers and eleven artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 10th. His story, "The Stench of Freedom," is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41 which was officially released on April 22nd 2025. Joel C. Scoberg lives on the beautiful Gower Peninsula in Wales, United Kingdom, with his very supportive wife, two somewhat feral children, and a growing menagerie of animals. He predominantly writes science fiction and fantasy stories, usually at night after his children have gone to bed and before he collapses from exhaustion. His stories have appeared in Daily Science Fiction, Gwyllion Science Fiction and Fantasy, 365tomorrows, and Every Day Fiction. Joel's love of science fiction and fantasy goes back further than his earliest memories. From watching The Never Ending Story so many times he wore out the video, to his family's Christmas tradition of watching the original Star Wars trilogy back-to-back, and discovering The Hobbit on a caravan holiday as a teenager and reading it, utterly mesmerised, in one sitting. He hopes to one day write a story that will equally enthrall a reader and make them fall in love with fantastical characters that, currently, only exist in his head. “The Stench of Freedom” was inspired by the transformational perspective that becoming a parent brings. Joel had long dreamt of becoming a writer, but pursuing a career in law and the long hours that entailed, as well as the fear of ridicule for putting something so personal as your own creation into the world, acted as excuses not to follow those dreams. Then, when his children were born, he realised he could hardly tell them to pursue their dreams if he hadn't done so himself. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 42nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (The Oppenheimer Alternative), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), Hugh Howey (Wool), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. HOLLYWOOD - Mesa, Arizona author Ian Keith is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other writers and eleven artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 10th. His story, "Blackbird Stone," is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41 which will be officially released on April 22nd 2025. Ian Keith went to philosophy school to learn how to tell the truth, and to law school to learn how to tailor a story to suit any set of appearances. Both trainings have helped him to write fiction, about equally. He lives with his partner and their two children in the Phoenix area, where he works as a ghostwriter. “Blackbird Stone” is his first professional publication. “Blackbird Stone” started as an itch to write about the pigeons, lizards, and rocks that populate suburban backyards in the Southwest. It grew into a love story and a tribute to quirky families when a bachelorette with an addiction to time elbowed her way in at the conceptual stage. The pigeons became blackbirds, the lizards became telepathic, and the stones became eggs to accommodate her.

Today's movie is The Neverending Story directed by Wolfgang Petersen. This movie is part of our Kickstarter promo series, where we watch movies that are related in one way or another to our graphic novel trilogy Meow the Infinite. The campaign for the final book is now live on Kickstarter! If you enjoy the podcast, please consider checking it out!We both like aspects of The Neverending Story, but ultimately the movie fails to deliver. It starts out strong, with an engaging story and creative visuals, but it's ultimately let down by an unfocused plot that seems completely confused about what the movie is trying to say. Thanks for joining us for another episode of Molly Movie Club! But when you think about it for a second, you think about what would have to be true about the world for us all to be walking around naked and feel no shame. What would have to be true about the world? What would have to be true about us for us to live unguarded, unshielded, fully transparent lives with each other? Well it would have to be a world where we were not a threat to each other, where we weren't always trying to manipulate and control each other. It would have to be a world of honor. A world of respect. A world of truth and humility. Not to mention, of course, it would have to be a world with really good weather and completely free of mosquitoes. And when you think about it, you realize that it is actually the perfect phrase to encapsulate the storyteller's opening scene of how God created a world that works. A world of harmony. A world of flourishing. A world where everything is as it should be. In short, it is the perfect phrase to describe this state of being that the biblical authors refer to as shalom, peace, universal flourishing, the way things ought to be.
After a short spell as a punk rocker, Limahl found fame with the band Kajagoogoo after responding to an advert in a music magazine in 1982, where the then named Art Noveau were looking for a new lead singer. The following year he left the band – but quickly went onto find his own success as a solo artist with his hit “The Never Ending Story”. His early ambitions, growing up in Wigan, were for a career as an actor and he even toured in production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. What then will he choose as his Inheritance Tracks... Inherited: Move Over Darling by Doris Day Passed on: Four Brothers by Manhattan TransferProducers: Catherine Powell and Anna Bailey

We never outgrow the need for story. Yet we think we do, don't we? Especially when it comes to this book, we call the Bible. We have made it into a book of rules, rights and wrongs, and dos and don'ts. And yes, there are some rules that teach us how life works best, but if that is what the Bible is to us, we have missed the point altogether. We have made it into a book of character studies and history lessons or facts to be clung to and mastered. A book to be analyzed, dissected, and studied, and these have their place, but again, the Bible is not a textbook to be mastered.

This week, the numbers man is back and this time he's brought his brother, as we go back to our roots by revisiting the brand new sequel for a movie we first covered nearly three years ago! It's 2025's The Accountant 2, directed by Gavin O'Connor and starring Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, J.K. Simmons, Daniella Pineda, Alison Wright and Robert Morgan. Anna Kendrick does not return for this one, but the movie aptly fills the void left by her absence by letting the Wolff Boys bro out for the bulk of the run-time this time around, and Bernthal is particularly outstanding in what is pure, uncut Dudes Rock cinema. Does the story make sense? Does it even matter? As the original found second life on TV and streaming, this nine-years-later sequel has been built to fill a three-hour programming block on cable in the not-so-distant future. The plot is needlessly complicated and hard to follow, but frankly none of that matters and the film is still fun as hell. Plus: we catch up on some recent theatrical outings, including Thunderbolts*, Bring Her Back, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Friendship and Clown in a Cornfield. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Accountant 2 is already available to stream on Amazon Prime despite the fact that it dropped in theaters a month and a half ago. Other works discussed on this episode include Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Dick Tracy, Top Gun, The NeverEnding Story, Crimes of the Future, Talk To Me, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Hot Fuzz, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Dog Man, Point of No Return and many more! We'll be back before too long, but we don't know when or what movie we'll be talking about, so keep your eye on our Instagram and BlueSky feeds for more. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Also in this episode: reading Eisner nominees in Hoopla, Stephen King EVERYWHERE, more hit films from 1984, the trauma of 90 seconds in this film, The Great Goblin Angle Bargle, YOU on Netflix IS NOT LIKE DEXTER, DIJ's new nerd room. In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

In this episode, Steve sits down with Limahl, the iconic frontman of Kajagoogoo and solo artist behind the timeless hit “Never Ending Story.” Limahl shares the story behind his unique stage name, reflects on his breakout days with Kajagoogoo, and about collaborating with legendary producer Giorgio Moroder. He also discusses the story behind his atmospheric cover of “A Horse With No Name,” and much more. It's a deep dive into New Wave history with one of its most recognizable voices. Jay takes a seat at the world's most uncomfortable dinner party courtesy of Mike's latest cinematic punishment: Sushi Girl (2012), a post-Tarantino crime flick where the tension is raw, the violence is extra crispy, and the titular sushi girl lies perfectly still while a bunch of washed-up crooks yell at each other in between flashbacks. Mark Hamill wonderfully hams it up, Tony Todd tries to class up the joint, and somewhere in the middle a rogue's gallery of B-movie/slumming A-list stars arrive; including Michael Biehn, Danny Trejo, Sonny Chiba, Jeff Fahey and Noah Hathaway, the now all-grown-up guy who played Atreyu from The Neverending Story! Jay tries to figure out if this is a crime thriller, a food safety violation, or both, and then the guys count down their Bottom Five Meals—cinematic servings of food so unappetizing they'll have you reaching for antacid. And if all that weren't enough to settle your stomach, the guys close out the show by paying tribute to the recently-passed Tony Todd with a memorial tribute round of Kick Two, Pick Two. So grab your chopsticks, question your life choices, and join the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons where, like sushi, revenge is served cold.
I grew up on Route 66 and have road trips in my veins. I've driven all over this great country, visited every single state and seen thousands of interesting things. Nothing inspires me more than a good road trip film — if you're the same way, check out one of this week's recommendations. All of the my picks on this week's list are pretty well known, which makes them so much fun to revisit. If you haven't seen one or all of them in a few years, what better time to revisit them?Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)There's nothing Pee-wee Herman loves more than his bicycle. Unfortunately for him, spoiled frenemie Francis Buxton loves it to, and hires someone to steal it for him. A distraught Pee-wee organizes a search party to find his bicycle and eventually hits the road and crosses multiple states in search of his irreplicable bike. Join Pee-wee and all the friends he meets along the way as he goes on his adventure. The Muppet Movie (1979)Life's like a movie, write your own ending! In the first full-length Muppet film, Kermit is convinced by a lost agent to head to Hollywood to fulfill his dream of making millions of people happy. Along his journey, Kermit meets a joke-telling bear named Fozzie, a weirdo named Gonzo, a rock band called the Electric Mayhem (led by Dr. Teeth), and the world's most beautiful women, Miss Piggy. Will Kermit and his friends reach Hollywood before Doc Hopper catches Kermit and forces him to become the mascot for his restaurant? I hope so, because there are a lot more Muppet movies after this one! The NeverEnding Story (1984)While hiding from school bullies, young Bastion acquires a book promising a never ending story and skips school, hiding in the attic to read it. The book tells the story of Atreyu and his quest to save Fantasia from a darkness known as The Nothing. The more Bastian reads, the more it seems his own life is becoming entertwined with the book itself! Featuring a hit theme song and a luck dragon, The NeverEnding Story is a journey not to be missed. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)If you've ever gone on a road trip, either as a child or a parent, you'll relate to the Griswolds as they drive across the country in their new station wagon from Chicago to Wallyworld! Directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron, and Randy Quaid, and featuring cameos from comedians including Eugene Levy and John Candy, among others. As a kid I identified as oldest sibling Rusty, and as a parent I can't help but see a little bit of Clark in the rearview mirror.Spring is here and there's no better time to roll down your windows, put the pedal to the metal, and hit the open road. If you can't fit a road trip into your current schedule, watching one of these movies about journeys is the next best thing! This is a public episode. Hello Dears! Happy Friday! I decided to do a little mini series of solo episodes as a follow up the episode of The Never Ending Story and Releasing Fear. To provide an offering for how to begin awakening our loving, trusting selves. And it starts with the heart. EPISODE 129: Winning the hearts of millions of fans in the 80s as the lead singer of British band Kajagoogoo, Limahl enjoyed the instant celebrity of hitting the top of the charts with his debut single ‘Too Shy' which was followed by two more Top 20 hits ‘Ooh to Be Ah' & ‘Hang on Now' (all of which he co-wrote). After being unceremoniously (and infamously) kicked out of the band, Limahl struck out on his own and soon re-emerged in the charts again with his first solo single ‘Only For Love'. That was quickly followed by the Giorgio Moroder– produced worldwide smash ‘Neverending Story', theme song from the hit film of the same name. 2019 saw Limahl re-enter mass collective consciousness when his music was highlighted by three major US television shows. Too Shy was featured in the standalone, interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch on Netflix and also in AMC's hit anthology American Horror Story: 1984, while Neverending Story played a pivotal role in the third season of Netflix's Stranger Things. His new single and remake of the America classic "Horse With No Name" is out now. limahl.com Contact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!
Send us a textChristian, the lead singer and bassist for The Ritualists, stops by the show to discuss bass playing, the new album Too Pure to Cure, cooking, history, and more.*****NYC-based The Ritualists' upcoming album, Too Pure To Cure (out now) is a trip. Produced and mixed by GRAMMY-winner Mario J McNulty (David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Prince), the album is packed with the band's signature mix of goth, glam, and modern rock, all wrapped up in their larger-than-life energy.Following their darkly danceable single "You Know Better", the band has recently released "The Wake" —a soaring, synth-heavy anthem inspired by classic ‘80s dark fantasy films (The NeverEnding Story, anyone?) and the shimmering hooks of the New Romantic era. Frontman Christian Dryden describes it as a reflection on childhood, resilience, and the ability to pull oneself out of tough situations. And it's already earned praise from The NeverEnding Story theme song's own (and fellow Reybee client) Limahl, who says:"I really like this—a little surreal, very melodic and with a video that has a classic early '80s vibe. The chorus asks, ‘Whoever wakes up?' — well, I just did, to The Ritualists!" Tracks on the album range from "King of Air," a surrealist reflection on feeling misunderstood, to "Every Thread," which juxtaposes cosmic insignificance with the universal pangs of love and envy. And of course, there's the title track, "Too Pure to Cure," which lead vocalist/songwriter Christian Dryden describes as less of a protest and more of a shoulder shrug—it's a declaration of knowing who you are and refusing to be “cured” of it. The Ritualists are Christian Dryden (vocals, bass), Jeffrey Andrew (keyboards), David Andreana (guitars), and Eric Kuby (drums). Too Pure To Cure is available on all streaming platforms today. *****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Hello Lovlies! Happy Friday! I decided to do a little mini series of solo episodes as a follow up the episode of The Never Ending Story and Releasing Fear. To provide an offering for how to begin awakening our loving, trusting selves. And it starts with the heart. Inspired by the wonderful book by Dana Quade, Doing The Thing: How Finding Your Shine Will Brighten Our World I share what she refers to as the 4 chambers of the heart and will be covering each chamber in this mini series. On this episode I talk about the second chamber of the heart which allows us to find our Divine inner adult, The Clear Heart. I share the importance of having a clear heart rather than a heart muddled and clouded by fear and self pity. A Clear heart allows you to engage in life with objectivity & reason. When your heart is clear you don't think personally by deciding that you're not going to be the victim of anyone's behavior. When your heart is clear you find great love and appreciation for You.Doing The Thing: How Finding Your Shine Will Brighten Our World, By Dana Quade, https://www.amazon.com/Doing-Thing-Dana-Quade/dp/0692001689Donations To Women Waken To Support The Show Are Greatly Appreciated
Send us a textLimahl stops by the show to discuss his latest release, how taking a chance with Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran helped his band get a record deal, coming out to his Mum, and so much more. *******“The original ‘70s track has been a favorite on my 'Evening' playlist for a long time,” says UK music topliner LIMAHL about his reimagining of the classic folk/rock hit “A Horse With No Name” that is released via Christopher Music on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. “The idea to reimagine it was always ticking away in the back of my mind.”The song was first released in 1971 in the UK (1972 in the US). The original was composed and performed by folk rock trio America and topped Billboard's Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts (it reached #3 on the UK Singles chart and was certified gold in 1972). Adapting the ‘70s musical aesthetics and injecting a bit of ‘90s electronica, Limahl's updated version of the song carries a bit of a retro-futuristic quality that feels equally at home in 2025. “The ‘90s have been enjoying a revival which prompted me to experiment with the drums/rhythms from that decade,” he explains. “Then the jerky, ‘Jupiter 8' analogue synthesizer/sequencer was added with a filtering envelope, and it became an important personality in the track.” He also toyed with the iconic non-lexical “la la” vocal and updated it, incorporating it further into the song. Absent on the ‘70s original but included in this rendition is the ‘la la' motif in the intro, the key-change on the last verse, and in the final chorus, the ‘la la's' crisscrossing the main lyric with the melody. Saying that, almost as an afterthought, a guitar from standout musician Steve Cooper was added, and it became the "icing on the cake.”The resulting track transforms the classic folk track with a mesmerizing and hypnotic synth-dominated swirl, making the song pop and click in ways that would have been unimaginable in the 1970s. The equally mesmerizing accompanying video bursts with surreal and psychedelic imagery, reflecting the song's hallucinatory spirit. Winning the hearts of millions of fans in the ‘80s as the lead singer of British band Kajagoogoo, Limahl enjoyed the instant celebrity of hitting the top of the charts with their debut single "Too Shy" (75million+ streams to date) which was followed by two more Top 20 hits "Ooh To Be Ah" and "Hang On Now" (all of which he co-wrote). This is where joy lives. This is where love is. This is a place where I am strong. This is where eyes meet, where kindred hearts beat. I am right where I belong. Now that my heart is opened, there's no place I'd rather be. This is where joy lives. This is where love is. This is a place where I am strong. This is where eyes meet, where kindred hearts beat. A friend said to me awhile back that Fear is a liar. I considered it and figured, ya, I suppose that's true. Yet the more I thought about it, it didn't work for me. I don't think that Fear is lying, I think Fear is the voice of a scared, wounded part of ourselves that is trying to keep us safe in a backwards way. This past weekend I felt this very strongly as I had a revelation that the only the only thing keeping me fully enjoying my life and being happy, is the voice of fear. And I made a pact with myself to let it end here. To release the cloak of fear that often feels wrapped around me.On this solo episode I share some further insights into fear, the wounded voice, and how to heal it. Of course touching on the general themes of this year, 2025, that relate to ending the Never ending story of our lives and why NOW is the time to let it end and tell a new story. I also share a few oracle cards which I pulled earlier in the week which aligned with the message and I pull an oracle card for the audience! In 1983 Kajagoogoo released their first single, “Too Shy”. The song became a massive international hit in Great Britain, the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, and about a half dozen other countries. The song was so huge that EMI were pressing 35,000 copies a day to keep up with demand! My guest this week on BAXIES MUSICAL PODCAST is former lead singer Limahl. Limahl talks about that song, getting fired from the band, reforming, and the release of his other international hit “Never Ending Story”. Limahl also talks about his upcoming single—an incredible retooling of “Horse With No Name” by America. Just an incredible story. Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! On his way to school, Bastian (Barret Oliver) ducks into a bookstore to avoid bullies. Sneaking away with a book called "The Neverending Story," Bastian begins reading it in the school attic. The novel is about Fantasia, a fantasy land threatened by "The Nothing," a darkness that destroys everything it touches. The kingdom needs the help of a human child to survive. When Bastian reads a description of himself in the book, he begins to wonder if Fantasia is real and needs him to survive.
