When we see a dragonfly, we normally see adults, which are capable of impressive aerobatics and have astonishing eyesight. Yet these fearsome aerial predators began life underwater, and when they undergo the transformation from nymph to adult they also change from water to air. Dragonflies truly are amazing! Joining us to talk about these incredible animals is Dr. Jessica Ware from the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where she is an Associate Curator and the current Division Chair in the Division of Invertebrate Zoology. Jessica's research focuses on the evolution of behavioral and physiological adaptations in insects, with an emphasis on how these occur in dragonflies and their close relatives, damselflies. Her research group uses genetics to study the evolutionary relationships between species and uses these tools to inform their work on reproductive, social, and flight behaviors in insects.Thank you for listening! This week we're catching up with Steve Keeler, Division Chair of the School of Media & Arts at Cayuga Community College about the state- and future of journalism. There were a number of topics we wanted to explore with him. So rather than impose a 40-minute episode on anyone -- we opted to break it up. This three-part episode explores the changing landscape of journalism -- including a new platform that allows independent journalists to develop an audience and incorporates important monetization pieces. It's called Patch Labs and has been a growing part of the dialogue around local news. After we dive into the world of paywalls, and some of the work being done to fix the business side of news. Do smart paywalls work? Or is it time for publishers of all shapes and sizes to begin looking at ways to monetize outside of traditional advertising? Then, we tackle trust, or the lack of it in local news. We talk about a couple specific pieces -- including this one about the death of local news, and it's role in making political divisions worse. We also talk about the role of platforms like Facebook and the damage they do to local news, as states and the FTC join forces to take on the social media giant.

Listen NowNurses, today numbering over four million, represent the largest segment of the healthcare workforce and deliver the majority of direct patient care.   Their role in determining care quality (and safety) cannot be under-estimated.  Absent adequate nursing care patients can face a long list of nonfatal and fatal outcomes.  The profession however suffers a number of challenges due in part to both an aging population and one that is increasingly co-morbid.  For example, not only are hospital patients more sick (i.e., have higher acuity) but because of financial pressures their lengths of stay have decreased.  Among other issues facing the profession are the increasing demand for nurses (there's presently a nurse shortage that is only expected to grow worse), the increasing demand for higher educational attainment, increasing administrative burdens (that takes away from their ability to provide direct care), an aging nurse population, career burnout, long standing/persisting scope of practice issues that limits their ability to "practice to the top of their licence" and the lack of nurses in organizational leadership positions. During this 27 minute conversation Dr. Ihrke discusses nursing education, the nurse shortage, nurse job satisfaction, scopes of practice issues and the under-representation of nurses on hospital and related health care institution boards.   Dr. Barbara Ihrke is currently Vice-President for Academic Affairs, School of Nursing, at  Indiana Wesleyan University.  She has been on faculty at Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) since 1994 as Professor, Division Chair, and Executive Director before serving as Dean of the School of Nursing in 2010.  Dr. Ihrke's research focus includes trans-cultural experience and spiritual care.  Her writings have also covered nursing education, clinical informatics and nurse leadership.  Dr. Ihrke overseas work includes serving on an IWU research team that studied Zika on the Island of Gonave, Haiti.   Dr. Ihrke received her doctorate from Purdue, her Masters in community health nursing from IWU and her undergraduate in nursing from St. Cloud School of Nursing.  She earned another under graduate degree in Missions from Crown College and a certificate in Tropical Medicine. Cited during  this interview are research findings, in part, by the National Academies of Science, see, for example, "The Future of Nursing: Focus on Education (2011): : http://www.nationalacademies.org/hmd/Reports/2010/The-Future-of-Nursing-Leading-Change-Advancing-Health/Report-Brief-Education.aspx.  This is a public episode. Jack and Marjorie failure of "going along to get along" inside the Samuelsen administration resulted in them getting removed from the union through a "kangaroo court" proceeding, which many considered unethical, unprincipled and even fraudulent. This show also focuses on the harassment, intimidation and incompetence of the elected officer of the Division Chair of MTA Surface. This elected union rep has a reputation to threaten members off and online, use derogatory slurs to describe union members, and put the private business/matters of members on the internet. All these actions are undoubtedly supported by TWU local 100 president John Samuelsen and even encouraged. This type of ineptitude must come to an end and shouldn't be tolerated by the membership. Its time for the members to wake up, stand up and hold all of our elected reps responsible for their actions and take back our union! In addition, he is licensed as a pharmacist in Wisconsin with experience as a pharmacy practitioner in both community and hospital settings, including a three-year tour of duty as a pharmacist in the U.S. Public Health Service. He joined the U.W.-Madison Pharmacy faculty in 1973 as an instructor in pharmaceutical dispensing and concurrently completed his graduate degrees. In 1979 he began work with Extension Services in Pharmacy at the U.W. School of Pharmacy. He has served as Chair of Extension Services in Pharmacy since 1996.  His current responsibilities include all phases associated with the planning, development, marketing, administration and evaluation of post-graduate continuing professional education/professional development programs at the state, national, and international level for pharmacists as well as personnel within the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Hanson also has the distinction of serving as the Melvini H. Weinswig Distinguished Professor.Dr. Hanson is also involved in research as it relates to continuing education, lifelong learning and continuing professional development in pharmacy. His research focuses on methods by which providers of continuing education may better serve as "facilitators" of learning. A major component of this includes the exploration of means by which pharmacists' extent of participation in lifelong learning/continuing professional development may be predicted based on specific learning characteristics; armed with this information, the CE provider should be able to enhance the design of programs to better meet the needs of prospective learners. An additional research component related to the facilitation of lifelong learning focuses on the responsibility/role of schools of pharmacy to prepare pharmacy students to become lifelong learners and adopt the concepts of continuing professional development. The research efforts of Dr. Hanson (and his colleague Dr. De Muth) were recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy which presented them with the Rufus Lyman Award for the best manuscript published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education during the 1992 calendar year. Dr. Hanson is active in numerous professional organizations in Wisconsin, the U.S., and internationally. He was a recipient in 1991 of the prestigious "Award of Merit" presented by the Section of Continuing Professional Education of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Their current project, FUNNEL CAKE FLOWERS & THE URBAN CHAMELEONS is a multi-media stage show about being black in corporate white America.  The satirical project analyzes how and why people of color still feel the need to put on the mask and police our emotions in front of white people.
