B2B lessons for B2C

Sean Griffey, until recently the CEO of Industry Dive, joined me on The Rebooting Show to discuss the big things Industry Dive, and by extension a lot of B2B, got right. Sean was rarely mentioned in the collection of digital media CEOs of the recent decade. Yet Industry Dive achieved one of the standout exits of the category. He led the B2B publishing company to a $525 million exit to Informa. At the end of 2024, Sean left his role at Informa TechTarget to enjoy “semi-retirement.” I've found over the recent years that the worlds of consumer and business publishing are coming together. It used to be they spoke differently and had different priorities. Now, you have publishers like Punchbowl and Puck executing B2B strategies. Semafor relies on events as the bulwark of its revenue model. Publishers are more likely to talk up their newsletters than ComScore numbers. Some of the lesions we discussed:Focus on a specific audience. Industry Dive would turn off ads if it had a story picked up by Reddit that led to a flood of viral traffic. That's because the people arriving weren't the “right people.” B2B isn't about reaching everyone. Know who you're writing for. A trick of B2B that narrows the focus: Write for a specific job title. Media properties nowadays can be messy, but they need to have a person in mind (and know enough similar people exist).Get receipts. Industry Dive focused its business model on marketing services and lead generation. In B2B, budgets are far greater for demand generation than branding or thought leadership. Do more with less. Industry Dive operated dozens of publications in verticals like wast management, retail, marketing and Tk. But it operated a single platform. That allowed it to quickly move to create new brands, even if it sacrificed unique branding elements.Go direct. Media companies have three core areas: creation, distribution and monetization. Sean criticizes consumer publishers for relinquishing control over distribution by chasing search and social traffic and monetization by relying on programmatic advertising middlemen. B2B media markets have developed differently, allowing companies to avoid those kinds of dependencies.

Is there any difference between a Wassail Bowl and a Loving Cup?And why oh why, on a Wassail, do people pin bits of toast to fruit trees? As ever, we'll do our best to get to the bottom of these mysteries, and several others. All while trying to appease the Old Apple Tree Man, in the hope he might show us the way to buried treasure! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Episode 359 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Matt Douglas, Founder & CEO of Sincere. Boston has this legacy reputation that you can't build consumer companies in the area, yet there are so many great companies that have scaled like Wayfair, DraftKings, iRobot, SimpliSafe, and so… so… many more. Plus, don't get me started on how many brands, especially footwear, are located here. Anyway, Sincere is another example of a great consumer company at scale. It is highly likely that you've used one of their products like Punchbowl to plan a party, Timehop to relive past memories, or Memento, where you can collect and preserve memories together for a group video or photo album. Sincere's latest brand is Lovebird, a new platform for the wedding industry which is taking on The Knot and other outdated incumbents and as highlighted in this interview with Matt, there will be more coming from Sincere. In this podcast, we cover: * A discussion around the legacy of an entrepreneur and what led Matt down the path of starting a corporate foundation at Sincere for charitable initiatives. * Matt's background story, growing up with 5 brothers and how he started his entrepreneurial roots early on. * Getting his career started and how he became the youngest Product Manager at Adobe. * His brushes with tech luminaries like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Alexis Ohanian, Justin Kan, and Dharmesh Shah. * The background story of Punchbowl and the three key characteristics he used for building a business. * Why the expansion into the wedding market with Lovebird made sense for the company and how they are differentiating themselves from the competitors. * Matt's philosophy around buying premium domains and a hint about his best 5 letter domain that is not even live yet. * And so much more.

This week, we have a new Senate Majority Leader and are getting a clearer picture of what the next Congress will look like. But what will it do on gun policy? To answer that question, we have one of the preeminent congressional reporters on the show. Punchbowl co-founder John Bresnahan has been covering Congress for decades now. He knows all of the key players in Congress, including new Majority Leader John Thune. Bresnahan said Thune had the strongest pro-gun record of the three Senators who ran for the majority leader role. He said John Cornyn's role in negotiating the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act hurt him in the race and may even have made the difference since it was a very close vote. He argued the entire Republican Senate leadership is strongly pro-gun now. Still, Bresnahan doesn't necessarily believe there are going to be a lot of opportunities for pro-gun legislation in the next Congress. With a 53-vote majority and the filibuster likely to remain, there probably aren't any significant gun bills that can make it to President Donald Trump's desk.  However, there are other ways Congress could have a big impact on gun policy over the next eight years. He said the longest-lasting impact will likely come from judicial appointments, and he noted the GOP will probably control confirmations for all eight years of Trump's term. Special Guest: John Bresnahan.

Happy Halloween! We have a CROWD PLEASER for you today. The Charles Dickens punch, which is set ablaze before it is served and best believe, it's good. Jules also reveals her Poison Apple-tini witch is hauntingly delicious. Uncle Brad digs into the history behind Charles Dickens' punch, and it turns out... he was kind of a dickens. You'll know what we mean when you listen.      Charles Dickens Punch  Glass: Heat resistant Punch Bowl (or heavy pot) and heat resistant glasses  Garnish: Lemon wheels and grated nutmeg  Ingredients:  Cognac 1.25 cups  Rum 2 cups  Black Tea 5 cups  4 Lemons (set 1 aside)   Demerara Sugar 0.75 cups  Directions  In your punch bowl add:  Thin peels (no pith) of 3 medium lemons (set lemons aside, you will juice these later)  ¾ cup demerara sugar  Using your fingers, press/mash the sugar together with the lemon peels (oils will start to extract form the lemon peels)  Let sit for 30 min or as long as overnight (more flavor comes through the longer it its)    In a saucepan add:  5 cups water  10 ounces of black tea (could be loose tea or 10 tea bags)  Boil the tea for 3 – 5 minutes – it's ok, black tea is more oxidized and can handle the boiling. Remove from heat and set aside.     Juice 3 lemons (from step 1) and strain into a separate vessel, you don't want pulp and seeds floating in your punch    Take a minute to warm your next two ingredients (you can combine) over low heat in a sauce pan (don't let this catch fire... yet). Or add the ingredients to a large jar (enough to hold 3.25 cups of liquid) and let rest inside your saucepan of hot tea. You can also warm your ladle in here too, you will want it warm so it doesn't cool off the spirits.     Now BACK TO YOUR PUNCH BOWL. Add:  2 cups Rum (warmed)  1 ¼ cup Cognac (warmed)  Ladel a small amount of the rum and cognac out and hold it away from the punch bowl. Light the contents of the ladle on fire. You should see a nice blue flame coming off the ladle. I'd love to hear your thoughts - send me a text hereDanny Inouye wanted to be a doctor when he grew up - specifically, he wanted to be a surgeon. When he was a senior in high school he was a Red Cross volunteer. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he saw the planes flying over Honolulu and rushed to an aid station where he treated civilians injured by falling anti-aircraft shells. As soon as he could, Danny enlisted in the army and was sent to Italy with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The war shattered his dream of becoming a doctor but a fellow wounded veteran, Bob Dole (yes, that Bob Dole) told him of his plan to become a lawyer and a politician in Kansas. Danny liked the sound of that, returned to Hawaii and entered politics as well. Little did he know he would become arguably the most influential politician in the history of Hawaii, whether the Kingdom, the Republic, or the State. The Ghosts of the Pacific Theme is Ukulele and Love Birds by emjaydabayou, with a few Waves of Hawaii added for ambiance. The Ghosts of the Pacific Transition music are some Uke Chords by turkitron. The outro music this week is the DC Area Hardcore Punk band Marginal Man's Missing Rungs. I'd love to hear your thoughts - send me a text hereKen Otagaki grew up poor on a sugar cane plantation on Hawaii's Big Island, but after seeing how oppressed his father was by the overseers, he vowed that he would make his own way in the world and, despite cultural and familial expectations, he would not follow in his father's footsteps. In his early teens he moved by himself to Oahu, put himself through high school and the University of Hawaii, and more-or-less laid the foundations for the life of his dreams. That all came crashing down, first with the arrival of his draft notice when he should have been exempt due to his job in the agriculture industry, and second when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor thrusting the United States into war and making Otagaki - and all Nisei - personae non gratae in their own homes.Transferred to the 100th Infantry Battalion, Otagaki had to deal with being an infantry soldier and a stretcher bearer when he had absolutely no desire to be in the military at all.

Episode 95: Red Flags in the Job Search Process

Real Job Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2024 29:39

We're talking from experience about red flags, especially in the job search process, where your gut fits into decision making and how to listen for those flags. Kat tells her story from 20 years ago about her first HR Leadership role where she joined a company working for a husband and wife team. The offer was lower than her comfort zone with a bonus to get her there. She then needed to clock in, which is unknown in leadership roles. When Kat got home from her first week on the job, she said to her husband, “One week down, 51 to go”, but in reality, she left after 6 months to preserve her mental health and well-being. This decision led to Kat starting her own business which has been thriving for 21 years. Liz's story is more recent. A recruiter sent an AI-written no-personality job description, and then there was a fast interview process which led to a funky feeling. The offer came with terrible benefits - a big red flag that shows you don't care about people. The red flags were all true, and while she tried to focus on the positive, it ended up being untenable and her gut got a lot less twisty once she left. One big flag to point out is this: would you take the job if you had a job? If the answer is no, why? If it's because things don't feel right, listen to that! Official advice #1: The Job Description: Is it written by AI? Boring? Trying to help draw you in? Include company values? Do you know what the company does, what the job is, is there a career page selling you on the company? Official advice #2: The recruiting process. What's it like? Do you feel they know you at all? Is there a decision process or does it go on forever? Have you met your boss, a few colleagues? It's a red flag if you don't feel like they know what they want and what they're looking for. Official advice #3: Look at Glassdoor, PunchBowl, Reddit, and other sites that talk about the experience working at the company. Look for threads in the reviews- not just the 1 from an angry employee. Look at the recent feedback on what it's like there. The score is important, but know that companies try to manipulate their score….pay attention if there are lots of positive reviews with zero substance. Official advice #4: Is the team diverse? Look on Linkedin and see who works there. Is everyone white and under 30 in suits and ties? Do they indicate that they want diverse teams and points of view? Official advice #5: Does the benefits package indicate that they care about their people? What's covered? How much are they contributing? We've never seen a great place to work with terrible benefits. Official advice #6: Do they encourage your questions? Answer directly? Belittle you for asking questions? RED FLAG. If you ever feel like your requests are being blown off, word salad or more, it's a huge indicator of what the company is like to work at. Official advice #7: Your gut is saying no. If you're not excited about signing the offer, it's for a good reason. It's hard to not listen to your brain and your bank account, but let your gut have a say in the decision. If you do go against your gut, we've got some clear advice for you. Don't announce it on Linkedin right away. Don't stop interviewing >> if your brain and your bank account win out and you try something new, it's ok to keep interviewing if you really don't think it's a fit. Be artfully honest when people ask you how things are going- lead with the positive, but tell people you're still open to new opportunities. If it's not a big fit, look for the good people you haven't met, the story, the learnings. There are good things that come out of good stints.

Recognizing the importance of trained and competent linguists, during World War II, the US Army's Military Intelligence Service trained foreign language speakers to help with the war effort. On this week's episode of 'The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart': The House passes critical aid for Ukraine and Israel in a rare Saturday session, but it could cost Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson his job. Now Democrats may have to help save him from the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene and others in his own party. California Rep. Robert Garcia and Punchbowl reporter Andrew Desiderio are with me to discuss the stakes. Opening statements are set for Monday in Donald Trump's criminal hush-money election-interference trial. We'll take a closer look at the jury that will decide his fate, whether Trump will testify, and the tough questions he might face if he does, with legal experts Ankush Khardori and Catherine Christian. I'll also take a moment to mark the 25th anniversary of the deadly mass shooting at Columbine High School.  I'll talk to Dr. Jonathan Metzl about how the massacre still haunts America today. All that and more on “The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”

This week pour yourself a pint of Victoria Bitter and join us in welcoming back the CEO of Aussie Pub Rock: Craig Elvin! This time he's with us live on American soil, so we decided to play a special version of the drinking game we call, “WILD CARD”! Robert and Craig go head-to-head in a game where they try to get points by naming the obscure band that is being played. Of course, we made it more interesting by adding an Aussie twist. This is a heated 10-song battle, so you can only imagine the state our players were in by the end! What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Besides conducting ridiculous game shows, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode we take a listen to all 3, as we let our contestants pick a randomly obscure song by the decade in which it was released from a creatively curated playlist. Our good friend Jeremy has been in bands with your hosts; and is an amazing guitarist and all-around music aficionado.Songs this week include:Heavy Pettin' – “In And Out Of Love” from Lettin' Loose (1983) Fair Game – “Keep It Up” from Beauty & The Beast (1991) Thunder Fox – “Every Single Day” from Love At First Sniff (2019) Poster Children – “Dynamite Chair” from Tool Of The Man (1993) Flickertail – “Right Behind The Eyes” from Right Behind The Eyes - single (2019) Thundermother – “Racing On Main Street” from Thundermother (2018) Truck – “Unconventionally Rising” from Exploring The Wah (2022) Royal Crescent Mob – “Mob's Revenge” from Omerta (1987) Dead City Ruins – “In And Out Of Love” from Shockwave (2022) Fishbone – “In The Cube” from Chim Chim's Badass Revenge (1996) Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Italy Drowns In It's Punch Bowl

Today's show is another example of out of control government spending.   Italy's government said on Tuesday fiscal incentives for home renovations had had a "devastating" impact on public finances over the last four years and were to blame for the expected rise in the country's massive public debt through 2026. The plan offered to pay homeowners 110% of the cost of energy saving renovations. Another project promised to cover 90% of the cost of improving the facade of a building. The government underestimated the scheme's appeal, but also made a number of other errors. With such generous handouts, homeowners had no reason to negotiate with builders over costs. On the contrary, since the rebate exceeded the actual cost, higher costs meant more money was left for the homeowners in their pocket.  This effect was so predictable that you could see it coming from miles away.  Asked why they got their forecasts so wrong, officials involved in the budgetary planning have said they had no precedent to draw on as no one outside Italy had ever offered to refund more than the costs of the renovations. I'm sorry this is just plain stupid.  ------------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com
