Today On the Dogwatch we have the pleasure of talking with Antonio Centeno, a former member of the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines out of Camp Pendleton, who you may know better as the founder of the website and Youtube channel Real Men Real Style, as well as other business ventures. In this episode, Antonio discusses the green military notebook he kept as a Marine Officer, how he used it in one direction to keep track of daily activities, troop movements, casualties, and then turned it over and in the reverse direction documented things like his finances, and notes to help him determine if he should get married. In good Antonio style, his journal generates discussion not only about notebooks, but also a range of other subjects including Indiana Jones, management, the Eisenhower Matrix, and the evolution of sharks.

The Delicious Story
Fly A Bit Higher with Aviation History Under Your Wing, Dr. Janet Bednarek

The Delicious Story

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2021 29:57

Something rare awaits you in this episode of The Delicious Story. We visit with aviation and urban historian Dr. Janet Bednarek, professor at the University of Dayton. She takes us on a journey covering the historical highlights of aviation after WWI, including the evolution of the airport system, and the role of barnstormers in igniting the public's interest for flight. You'll also learn the surprising impact the United States Postal Service played in aviation development. Prepare to be surprised and intrigued by the history that makes your travel by plane possible today. Seat backs up and buckle in. LADIES IN AVIATIONDr. Bednarek does stand apart in the aviation historian world. It turns out that female aviation historians are quite a rarity. She was the only one who appeared in my search, as a matter of fact, but she assures me there are other women in the field of study as well.Dr. Bednarek and I connected to talk about the unique role of woman in aviation and how their involvement led to greater safety in the early days of flight. Those ladies were true trailblazers given they had to face the headwinds of inequality of opportunity, many of them active right around when women were finally given the right to vote. My fascination with females in aviation started with the story of Bessie Coleman who was the first African American and Native American woman to earn her pilot's license in the mid-20s. Her achievement was doubly notable as a woman of color. Did you know that the history of aviation spans 3000 years? If you include all the ways humans have interacted with sending things aloft, it all began with the first kite invented in China in 1000 B.C.E. Ever since then, ladies had to work extra-hard to make their way into the air, and yet they kept on taking every opportunity to do so. After the Wright brothers got the first plane airborne in 1903, Blanche Scott was permitted to taxi a plane and it became airborne making her the first female pilot. A quick review of Scott's bio reveals that she was known to be an adventurer, having completed a transcontinental automobile journey before she became a pilot. Her tour by car occurred in the early 1900s at a time there were no more than 218 miles of paved roads outside of cities across the U.S. Blanche's life spans a period of incredible changes in aviation, from when planes were invented to watching Glen Armstrong set foot on the moon. It was men and women who made the flight you can take today a reality. BARNSTORMERS IMPACT FOR AVIATIONIt's easy to get sort of romantic about the courage (and craziness) of barnstormers who piloted temperamental planes made of wood, wire, and paper surrounding an engine. These men and some women would do nearly anything to fly, which is why so many of them turned to entertaining audiences. Here is footage from the 1920s with a sampling of the types of air acrobatics these aviation daredevils would perform. Dr. Bednarek explains the circumstances that led to the barnstormer phenomenon. You'll also learn more about the state of the military after WWI, that led pilots to become entertainers. It was the barnstormers who captured the imagination of the public. These flyers brought entertainment and aviation antics to the masses. Audiences found flight exciting, but the draw also might have been an appetite for watching death-defying tricks in case they turned for the worse. Unfortunately, just like Bessie, many pilots didn't live a very long life. And as to the influence they had on the public, Dr. Bednarek explains that their feats may have worked against those who were trying to make air travel more mainstream. For some pilots, there were additional employment opportunities to consider. Dr. Bednarek explains how the United States Postal Service played a pivotal role in finding a use for airplanes in the service of mail delivery, for instance.Dr. Bednarek details the backstory and some of the ideas and technology the U.S. Postal Service (link) incorporated in flight between WWI and WWII that helped shape it for the future. Even though pilots who worked for the postal service had the security of a paycheck, the work was nearly as dangerous as that of a barnstormer. AIRPORT DEVELOPMENTThe next time you enter the airport, consider all the history that occurred to make it possible for you to have access to flight. Dr. Bednarek explains there was an interest to make a commercial interest of flight after WWI. However, it was an idea that would require an organization of airport facilities to dot the country, and more acceptance by the public. In the 1920s, there were grassy airfields throughout parts of the United States, but for true success as a means of transportation everything hinged on an organized system. Per Centennial of Flight, “In 1929, Pan Am replaced its rickety pier at Miami and built the first true, U.S. land-based international airport, 116-Pan American Field.”Listen in during the interview as Dr. Bednarek walks us through the changes that influenced airports, which in turn had an impact on the urban communities nearby. MEMORABLE TABLE MANNERSOnce grounded, I do ask Dr. Bednarek to share a memorable meal story. She had a couple of interesting ones that were not so much about food as on the mishaps of the meals. Her first story had all the potential of being romantic: she had just gotten married and Paris was involved. But alas, everything came down to table manners. Admittedly, formal dining etiquette will trip most of us at some point. It's easy to forget or not know the rules. My knowledge has lapsed as I eat at home in isolation with my hubby in front of the TV during pandemic times. I found this video by Real Men Real Style titled the Ultimate Guide to Table Manners to give you a quick 101. It's funny with helpful brush-up reminders. FLIGHT ETIQUITTESince we are talking etiquette, it seemed right to mention airline passenger manners, too. Maybe you've experienced rude behavior during a flight or heard about belligerent passengers caught on video in the news now and then. Or, perhaps you've been pushed to it in a state of exhaustion on a flight yourself and not put your best self forward. Air travel can get hectic and bring out the worst in people. As a public service announcement, here's a printable that you're welcome to wear on your next flight. Consider it a gentle reminder for everyone to be chill and kind to each other. And if we all observe some passenger etiquette flights will be more pleasant, too. Over at Thrillist they offer a hearty list of manners to mind. I'm not sure if I agree with rule number 8 about hot food, but you can read the full list and see if you generally agree. THE PAST IS YOUR FUTUREThe next time you're at the airport waiting to check bags or removing your shoes to pass through security, remember that there have been many stories in the past to make your adventure possible. Isn't it remarkable that something people could only dream of doing 100 years ago we largely take for granted today? Once you've boarded the plane, stowed your baggage in the overhead and buckled up, consider what a marvel it is to fly. And then smile politely to your neighbor and honor your shared space before turning your head to nap. Dr. Bednarek's book she wrote with her husband is available to purchase. Details about the Walter Prescott Web Memorial Lectures Dr. Bednarek mentioned can be found over at University of Texas Arlington, Department of History.

‘You can’t judge a book by its cover,’ the saying goes. And that’s absolutely true...for books. But when it comes to people, appearances really do matter. We all make subconscious judgments about other people based on their personal grooming and clothing habits. Sometimes our snap judgments don’t align with reality. But often enough, and particularly in the professional world, they do. We naturally gravitate to people who look the part and seem confident in their role. Ultimately, we all want the look that works for us – that complements our unique looks, projects authority, wears comfortably, but that also doesn’t get in the way or leave us scratching our head when trying to get dressed in the morning. Sounds complicated? It doesn’t have to be.  “To me, credibility is so key. If a naked man walks into a crowded room and yells ‘fire,’ what do we think? We just think he’s crazy. If a fireman says ‘everyone get out of here,’ do we question him? No. Instant authority.” - Antonio Centeno About Antonio Centeno Antonio Centeno is the founder of Real Men Real Style, a web-based company offering a wealth of style and grooming-related advice to men around the world. View the full show notes and resources at RealMenRealStyle.com/109 When is the last time you really thought about the eye contact that you're giving to people? Chances are, you're sending off signals you don't want to. For example, if you don't give people enough eye contact you can seem rude. You also make the person feel as if they are boring, and that you aren't interested - even if that's not the case. On the other hand, if you give them too much eye contact it can seem aggressive. They may become intimidated, and quite frankly, think you're being an ass. So what is the right amount of eye contact? Well, it's honestly a complicated answer. It can change with the culture you are in, as well as the situation. A good rule of thumb here in North America, though, is the 50/70 rule. When speaking, make eye contact 50% of the time. When listening, make eye contact 70% of the time. I really wanted to dive further into this topic and go over all the complexities of the discussion. I came up with guideline of 10 Eye Contact Mistakes I commonly see people making, and I'm going to share them all with you in detail on this episode. Download this episode of the Real Men Real Style Podcast known to learn how you can use your eyes to give off the right message. 10 Eye Contact Mistakes: Not Enough Eye Contact Too Much Eye Contact Not Knowing Cultural Norms Maintaining Eye Contact Reading Too Much Into Other People's Eye Contact Eye Contact in Authority Don't Look Away Too Quickly Not Establishing Eye Contact at the Start Not Listening with Your Eyes MAKE EYE CONTACT Highlights: In North America there's a 50/70 rule. When speaking, look at the person 50% of the time. When listening, look at the person 70% of the time. Eye contact rules are different all over the world. Sometimes eye contact is seen as aggressive. Learn the cultural rules of where you are visiting, and the people you deal with. Most guys think a girl who makes eye contact with them, want them. Not giving enough contact can make you seem weak. Don't let your eyes dart away. To avoid nervous eye contact, count in your head. 3 to 5 seconds in the best amount of time to look at someone when you meet them. Don't stare at people's feet or looking away. Eye contact show that you are paying attention. If you're not listening with your eyes, it can be disrespectful. Don't get caught staring off. Pick one eye to look at. Try to discover what color their eyes really are. Do not stare at a woman's breasts when you are speaking to her. You have to practice giving eye contact. Record yourself giving presentations or talking to people. Nothing feels natural at first. Mindset Takeaway: Your eye contact can make or break what people think of you.   View the full show notes and resources at RealMenRealStyle.com/109

In fact, I'm sure you've encountered this problem before as well. What color of dress shoe should you buy? Black or Brown? Even though the question itself is simple, the answer can be very complicated. There are a lot of factors you should be considering before you buy a pair of dress shoes. For example, when you wear them how formal are the occasions you will be attending? If you go to a lot of black tie events, then there's only one option for you: black. Brown shoes will never be as formal, and the lighter they are they less formal they will be. On the other hand, you will never be able to buy a pair of black dress shoes that look casual. Their strength can also be their weakness. There's also so much more to consider, such as your existing wardrobe, how much the shoes will take to maintain, and even what style of shoe you prefer. We all make some of these mistakes, and I'm not exception. One example is having your hands in your pockets. This can send a lot of different signals to people, and it's never a good thing. Some people think you are hiding things Others thing you don't care enough to take the time to engage with them. In any case, having your hands in your pockets really does limit you. You're going to be less expressive. You're going to be less visually engaging. One trick I use is to touch my wedding ring from time to time when I'm speaking. That forces me to leave my hands out of my pockets. Other people might prefer to hold items, like pens. The other thing to remember is to make sure these things don't become excessive and distracting. I have plenty of more habits to go over in this episode, and a lot of tips on how you can break them. You don't need an exact match on metals, you want them to be very close. Dark shows and suits are a sign of respect. Don't wear dark brown and black together. Warm and cool colors want to stick together. Black is considered a cool color. Greys and blacks work well together. Black doesn't look very good with oxblood. I'm going to guide you through all of this simply, and quickly, so you can get out there and really start upping your style game in new ways. But remember, you don't want to just dive right in. You're going to want to experiment and explore your options first. There's nothing that'll turn you off faster than jumping in too deep and feeling uncomfortable in front of other people. Download this episode now to learn how you can master patterns to stand out and leave a positive visual impact on those around you. 5 Pattern You Should Be Rocking: Stripes Checks Twill weaves Paisley and Floral Dots 5 Rules for Wearing Patterns: Keep patterns muted Bring in patterns gradually Avoid placing similar patterns and proportions next to each other Look for items that compliment, not match Practice wearing patterns Highlights: Patterns are everywhere. Solids won't bring as many compliments as patterns will. Stripes are the easiest to bring into your wardrobe. Checks are stripes going both directions. If you like solids but want to bring in a pattern, consider a herringbone weave. Florals are best for neck ties and pocket squares. The larger your dot, the more casual it becomes. Patterns don't need loud crazy colors. It's easier to lose accessories if you start to feel uncomfortable. Don't have same sized patterns next to each other. Show your creativity through complimenting patterns. Keep trousers solid Mindset Takeaway: Patterns are like a spice, you don't need to throw too much in there to pull out the flavor. Chances are you may be in for a rude awakening, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go for it. In reality when we wear new clothes what we expect to happen doesn't. Women probably won't compliment you because they are afraid you will think they are hitting on them and they worry things will go in the wrong direction fast. When you walk into the office looking sharp you probably don't get a lot of people mentioning your outfit. It's not because they don't like it, or that they don't notice it. You will make an impression, people usually just aren't vocal about it. And it's also important to remember that just like a new pair of shoes, you have to break in your style. There's going to be things about what you are wearing you will have to get used to and you won't know what they are until you start wearing it for a long time. Maybe wearing a suit jacket makes you feel too warm at first, because you're used to the A/C blowing directly on you. Maybe those dress socks will get itchy because you're os used to wearing short white gym socks. I'm not here to discourage you from upping your game when it comes to your style. Quite the opposite. I want you to let you know the common expectations people have, and share with you the reality of what you are getting yourself into so that you don't get discouraged and quit. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style and hear the reality of what happens when you decide to change up your style game. 7 Expectations VS Reality New clothing will make you look great. Only the right clothing will make you look great When you level up your style everyone will notice. Most people don't care about your style. You're going to rock your new fashion. You need to build confidence before wearing clothes out. You're going to get compliments from women.    More men will notice your style change. More money = better quality. Most brands are way overpriced. You're going to rock a new hairstyle. Your hair either looks terrible or you can't reproduce what the barber did You'll stop shaving and have a beard in a month. After a month you're going to have an itchy scruff. Highlights: You have to nail fit, fabric, and function. When you buy something off the rack take it to a tailor to have it fitted. Find the right brand that works for your body type. Get the best fabric you can afford. Go with classic styles so they last. People you interact with will be subliminally influenced by your attire. Even if they don't say anything, people will notice. Women are more reserved about giving compliments. Women worry men will think their compliment means they are hitting on them. Overpriced brands are older and generally bought out by someone else. Find groups and online forums that discuss the quality of brands. People who write reviews are either super happy or super upset. Don't be afraid to go to the barber and ask them what they did. Right after a haircut, take a photo. Pay attention to the brush and products the barber used. Most people take 6 months to a year to grow a beard. Mindset Takeaway: To really rock a style it takes time and confidence. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode99

Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode98 Tattoos are everywhere these days. They used to be only seen from military men showing off their service, or from people who spent time in prison. Today, we see them on nearly everyone who turns 18. Like anything, we typically do it to bring attention to ourselves - especially from a partner. The question is, do women really want to see that ink? If so, what doe they want to see? It's also important to know where they want it to be. I imagine a tattoo on your face of a naked lady wouldn't be too appealing to women. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style now to hear what women really think about ink. 10 Tattoos From Least Attractive to Most: The mom heart (not attractive) The dagger (not attractive) Sexy lady (not attractive) Flowers (not attractive) Skulls (somewhat attractive) Anchors (somewhat attractive) Birds (more attractive) Fierce animals (more attractive) Foreign language (attractive - if you speak it) The minimalist tattoo (most attractive) 10 Tattoo Placements From Most Attractive to least: Forearm (most attractive) Arms Back Underside of wrist Chest Knuckles Ankle Back of Calf Legs On your belly (not attractive) Highlights: Tattoos are very cultural. Study shows women don't find tattooed men more or less attractive. Men found other tattooed men to be more attractive to women. Women find men with tattoos to be healthier, more masculine, more dominant, and more aggressive. A lot of women find men with tattoos to be worse partners and worse parents. Tattooed men are seen as “the bad boy”. If you have a foreign language tattooed on your body, you need to be able to speak it. Woman like small tattoos that are simple. Be careful of tattoo placement for your workplace. Avoid tattoos on the face. Tattoos are more and more common. The best tattoo for a stylish professional is a minimalist tattoo on your back. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode97 There was a time when I knew nothing about style. I used to say that I didn't care. The truth is I just didn't know. I was also too lazy, and too busy, to care about my style. I think that's a very common thing. The more I started to know about style, the more I cared. The more I cared, the more I noticed other people breaking the rules. Now, I'd like to make sure it's known that no rule is set in stone. You can break any rule, but first, you have to understand it so you really know how and when it's appropriate to break the rules. For this episode of the Real Men Real Style podcast I've decided to go into detail on 25 of my style pet peeves. Some of these things even I used to break because I didn't know. Today, when I see people break these rules, I don't get angry or try to publicly shame them. I nicely, privately and respectfully explain to them what they are doing wrong, so they can up their game in the future. Download this episode now to learn some of the most common style mistakes people make. 25 of My Style Pet Peeves: When people say they don't care about their style, then judge everyone else. Square toed shoes. Sagging pants. No socks. White socks outside the gym. Off proportions. Overuse of fragrance. Long and oversized t-shirts. Oversized logos. Badly fitted suits. Jackets without a pocket square. Buttoning bottom button of a jacket. Men who follow rules without understanding why. Men that correct other men in public. Not removing tack stitching or brand labels. Dark shoes with light trousers. Running shoes with everything. Wearing Crocs. Fully buttoned dress shirts with no tie. Dressing oblivious to the unwritten dress code. Unpolished shoes. Badly wrinkled clothing. Pajamas in public. Bright green, red blue, and black “dress shirts”. Don't be a snob. Highlights: Most snap judgments are made off how people look. A lot of people who claim they don't care about style are just lazy or too busy. Square toed shoes are for pilgrims and don't look good on anyone. No one wants to see your underwear or your butt crack. You can buy no-show socks. Not wearing socks will damage your shoes. White socks are for athletics only. Skinny ties don't go with wide lapels. Big men shouldn't wear skinny jeans. People around you don't want to have to smell you continuously - even if you smell great. Most stores offer free suit adjustments. A suit is meant to make you look better, make sure they are tailored properly. Suit Jackets, Blazers, Sports Coats, all have breast pockets for a reason. Two button suits are not meant to have the bottom button buttoned. Style rules were created for a reason, know why so you know when they do and don't apply. Don't public embarrass somebody, try to raise up their self-esteem. Invest in more than one pair of shoes, and have multiple color choices. Crocs are not good-looking shoes. There is always a dress code anywhere you go. If you spend money on your dress shoes, take care of them. Ironing shirts and pressing trousers doesn't take much work. Bright shirts are not designed for dress shirts, they are for clubbing and partying. Mindset Takeaway: Be the person who pulls people up when they don't know as much as you, don't knock them down. You really need to set yourself apart and become an amazing person. Believe it or not, it's not that hard to do. By changing your mindset in some key areas you'll notice some big differences. For example, you probably try to get as many things done in a day as you can. That's going to be a downfall, because you're going to end up doing everything sub par. Instead focus on a few important thing each day. Really put everything into it, and make it something you are proud of. It's far better to make a few great things than to make a lot of crappy things. On this episode of Real Men Real Style, Antonio looks into what makes someone average and what makes someone amazing. Download this episode today to learn how you can start changing yourself to become the person you want, and achieve the success you deserve. 10 Tips to Go from Average to Amazing: Focus on quality, not quantity. Be effective, not efficient. Be consistent in completion. Listen to what is not said. Take the initiative. Seek experience. Be prepared. Be honest. Accept responsibility. Train yourself to delay gratification. Highlights: You've probably had some success, but feel there's still a ways to go. In most things, most of us are average. Don't try to do as much as you can, hone in on a few things. Focus on the 20% that will yield you 80%. Learn to prioritize, and complete things on time. Listen to someone and repeat back what they said they know you are listening. Think about what's not being said, and seek to understand. Don't wait for someone to ask you to do something. Having an education isn't the same as having actual experience. Be prepared for events, don't react to events. Opportunities favor the prepared and the bold. Small lies build up. Being honest is the best policy. You have control over most things. Blaming others means you give up hope. Instant gratification can have negative long term effects. Mindset Takeaway: Boost your success by going from an average person to an amazing person with just a few simple shifts of your mindset. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode87

And believe it or not, layering can be used in the summer months as well. Effectively layering your clothes, paying attention to what fabrics are on top of what, and taking a little extra time to think about you're going to wear can really make you look like a million bucks. Go from thin to thick. Every layer should look good on it's own. Colors should compliment each other. Don't have the same patterns. Tuck in under layers. Accessories can bring another layer. Be careful of white clothing. Go out and look for inspiration. Highlights: Layering can be used for function and fashion. It is possible to layer during the summer. Have a base layer, core layer, and top layer. 2 layers is good, 3 layers looks great. Outside wear leathers, under knits, and then cottons. Thin clothing should be close to the body, and get thicker the further away you get. If a layer doesn't look good, you don't want to be wearing it. A layer you don't like can lower your self confidence. Go for a single pop of color. Avoid using the same pattern on different layers. Don't let under layers stick out. Neck ties can add extra materials and patterns. Hats and bags gives an extra layer. White clothing is generally used for formal layering. Subscribe to a menswear magazine and tear out what you like. There are so many types out there, and many men mistakenly think that just because shoes are black they can go with any level of formality. When we think of skin care, we typically think it's for women. In all honesty, it's not. A man has to take care of himself just as much, if not more, than a woman. We are commonly exposed to more dirt, more chemicals, and hazardous materials due to the nature of our work. Most men often don't realize how much harm is being done until it's too late. One day they look in the mirror and realize they look like they are twenty years older than they really are. This can be a big problem, because sadly agism is a real thing. You don't want to lose out on the job or that girl just because you didn't take care of your skin. Once the damage is done, it's too late - but that doesn't mean it's too late to prevent more damage from happening right now. On this episode of the Real Men Real Style podcast, Antonio discusses the 7 skin care mistakes that most men make. Not going to an Esthetician. Not wearing sun block. Having a cleaning routine. The importance of diet. Wash your pillowcase and sheets often. Go see a dermatologist. Highlights: Most men don't take enough effort to take care of their skin. Agism is real. When you pop a pimple you are pushing germs back into a pimple. Use a cold compress on pimples for 3-5 minutes. Cotton swabs can be use to drain pimples. 1-2% salicylic acid products help open the pores. Estheticians are readily available to treat your skin. Find a high zinc sunscreen (15-20%). Zinc helps protect UVA and UVB rays. A facial cleansing routine is important - especially at night. Routines will help you find the right product for you. Your bad skin may cause by the foods you are eating. Wash your pillowcase weekly. A dermatologist should be seen at least once a year. Detecting problems early is your best bet. In order to be successful you have to fail. A lot. It's the only way to find the real answer, which are never as easy as 1 + 1 = 2 in the real world. In the real world there are emotions at play, and people rarely follow the logical route. Lastly rules aren't set in stone. They are guidelines, and flexible as you are trying to find your way to success. When you reach the top, you set the rules and that's the position you want to be in. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode76 Have you put much thought into how you sit? What you do with your legs can actually affect your mentality, as well as the signals you are giving off to other people. Believe it or not, when you sit with your legs crossed this can send off negative signals to people. It makes you appear closed off, and like you aren't listening. This can cause problems in business - especially if you are trying to negotiate. In fact there was even a study by Gerard I. Nierenberg and Henry H. Calero that showed out of 2,000 negotiations that were recorded, not a single one ended with legs being crossed. That's a pretty definitive conclusion. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style to hear more about what signals your legs may be unintentionally sending off. 5 Sitting Positions: Legs out front with the knees together. Legs out front with the knees spread. Leg over leg cross position. Figure 4 leg cross position position. Ankle-lock position. Highlights: The way you placed your legs when you sit sends a message. It indicates where you are from. If someone sits with their legs crossed that normally don't, it can be a signal that something is wrong. The further something is from your body, the less you think about the action it takes. You have to have observed someone's normal behavior to get an idea about their verbal behavior. Be respectful with how wide you have your legs spread. Wider spread legs shows dominance. Someone bouncing their legs shows that they are nervous. Leg over leg is more common in Europe. Figure 4 leg shows a higher status and is more common in America. When making decisions or negotiations, you shouldn't have your legs crossed. If you are a natural leg crosser, you may be sending a negative signal. Mindset Takeaway: Understand that your leg position has an affect on you and others. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode74 Style rules are really just guidelines. They are meant to help put you on the right track to finding your own style. If everyone were to follow the rules exactly, we would all look the same. No one would stand out, and it would be a very boring world. That's why we are bringing you this unusual episode of Real Men Real Style. We explain ways you can go against the grain to find your own personal style. We'll discuss rules you can “break” in order to not only be the best dressed guy in the room, but also the most eye catching. Try these 10 unconventional style tips out for yourself and see if they work for you. Maybe they will work for you, maybe they won't. The important thing is to make mistakes and try new things, that's the only way to find what really fits you. Download this episode today to get unique tips on creating a style all your own. 10 Unconventional Style Tips: Go make style mistakes. Don't take your clothing to a tailor. Wear white or black whenever you want. Long sleeve shirts in the summer. Short sleeve polos with a jacket. Using electric, disposable, and cartridge razors. Dress for yourself. Formal with informal matching. Create a uniform. Have the courage to be the best dressed man in the room. Highlights: It's possible for you to write the rules yourself and create your own game. If you always stay in the lines you'll never find the real boundaries for you. You can learn to adjust your clothes yourself. Find the right brand for your body type. Wearing white sends the signal that you have the money to let your clothing be trashed. If you have the confidence to pull off a bold color, go for it. Less clothes doesn't mean you are cooler. Lighter colored breathable fabrics will help reflect and protect. If it's hot, wear and unlined jacket with a polo shirt to keep cool. This will give you a more casual look. A high quality polo can even work with a casual suit. Try each razor to find what you personally need. Think about what you represent, and dress for that man. You can mix and create interesting combinations with formal and casual clothing. When you find what look is right for you, repeat the style again and again. Get different variations, not exact duplicates. You want to stand out, but not be a cartoon character. Don't let the environment you are in dictate the way you dress. If you have to wear a specific uniform, pay attention to its fit and presentation.   Mindset Takeaway: If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't trying. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/MakeMoneyWithClothing We all know that the way we dress can have an impression on people. If you always wear sweatpants and a raggedy old t-shirt, people will think of you differently than if you wear a suit. To be honest, what people think of you isn't the most important reason to improve your attire. The way you dress can have a direct impact on how much money you make. That's right, your outfits could be holding you back from your true income potential. If you want to get the part, you have to look the part. You'll never see a real estate agent constantly selling million dollar homes wearing ripped jeans and a tank top. On this episode of Real Men Real Style, Antonio looks at 10- that's right TEN- ways in which what you wear can translate into making more money. You'd be surprised at how much you can increase your wealth by putting a little extra time and money into your image. Download this episode today to see how you can improve your financial situation through your clothing today! And make sure to check out Style System VIP if you're a professional interested in receiving personal style coaching.  10 Ways Image Translates Into Higher Income: Enclothed Cognition Affects abstract thinking First impressions matter Stand out from the crowd Status Expectation match Intelligence and competence Sends signals of authority and trust Negotiations Retention Highlights: Money is something that can cause good in the world. Certain clothing can give you mental strength. You can become self conscious if you're in the wrong attire. When people wear formal clothing their abstract thinking goes up. Dress up for a test. It's hard to disrupt someone's first impression of you. Looking good will make you grab people's attention. Setting yourself apart from the rest will give you a leg up. If you sell million dollars items, shouldn't you dress like a million dollars? Status is given to you by your peers. Make sure your look matches what you are doing and the expectations that come along with that. Your appearance can give off the impression that you are intelligent and competent. Dark framed glasses make people seem more intelligent. How you dress affects how you can persuade people. Red can convey more power. Your attire can validate what you are asking for. Fancier clothing can significantly increase closing rates. Wearing casual clothing against someone in a suit in negotiations means you will be dominated. A sharp image will form a lasting impression that will out live a short conversation. Style System VIP Mindset Takeaway: Improve your wardrobe and you'll improve your income. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode70 One of the most common questions I get is, “How do I match my clothing?” It's sounds like a simple subject, but it's not something we are taught in school. In fact most people are never properly instructed on how to match their clothing, and they are really doing themselves a disservice by not putting thought into their attire. Let me ask you, when you walk into a room do you want people to think you look like a clown? Do you want to spend your entire time at an interview, or meeting with someone and they just can't get past what you're wearing or do you want them to acknowledge you look good and then move on to focus on you and your skills? To do this you really need to know the basic rules of matching and really think about what you are going to wear each morning. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style today and start putting more effort into yourself instead of hoping to get lucky with your looks. 5 Matching Rules: Complement, don't match Imitate the masters. Levels of formality. Match leathers. Match metals. Highlights: Style is simplicity. It allows people to move on from your clothes and look at your skills. Think through your outfit, don't get lucky. Matching is when fabrics are the same. Complementing is when items work together and play off each other. Look at people in the spotlight that you like their look. If you imitate the masters you will pick up on their techniques. Some pieces are made to go with certain clothing. Know the difference between casual and formal. You can't throw a leather jacket over a suit, you'll bring down the outfit. The three main leathers are black, brown and oxblood. Don't have a harsh contrast between shades of leather. Decide what colors you gravitate toward and pick a belt that fits. Keep your metals the same. Wedding bands don't follow this rule. These rules are all basic rules, and are not set in stone. Society was built on refining things, seeing what works and what doesn't. Menswear is no different. There are items that have survived centuries, or more, that are still popular today and are definitely worth you looking more into. Do you know what you would find in your bathroom that you would also find in an ancient Egyptian's, or a Roman soldier's?  On this episode of Real Men Real Style, Antonio takes a close look at 7 menswear items that have held up over the centuries. He looks at what has kept these trends alive and well, and why you should still be using them. You might be surprised to find that some of the ancient items- that are readily available in most stores- are actually superior to some of our more modern inventions. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style to open your mind to the past, and get in touch with Menswear items that will keep you classy. 7 Menswear Items That Have Been Around for 100 Years: Single-blade razors After shave Pomades Vest Bowtie Suspenders Hats, pinned collars, club collar, hidden button collars, boutonnieres, ascots, pocket watches, casual silk scarves  Highlights: If an item has been around for 100 years, it's doing something right. The two single blade razors out there are the straight razor and the safety razor. One straight razor can last you the rest of your life. Even the Egyptians used straight razors. Hair is associated with not being clean. Most men think cartridge razors are the only option. Cartridge razors lift hairs on the face, which can cause ingrown hairs. It can be hard to get to smaller areas with a cartridge razor. A shaving brush helps lift hairs and get a closer shave. The reason aftershaves were important was because they prevented infections. Aftershave also helps with irritations caused from shaving. Most after shaves don't sting anymore. Romans used pomades as a soap. Pomade has shine, and strength for hold. Look for a water based pomade. Vest originally developed to add more warmth while allowing movement. Eventually they were developed to hide the waist area. Bowtie has the same formality as a necktie and can make you stand out. Neck ties can get in the way. Bow ties resolve that problem. If you want to build trust and confidence, wear a bow tie. Suspenders were made before belts were invented, are more comfortable than a belt, and help disperse the weight. Try to wear suspenders with buttons, not with clips. Some collars can come off as pretentious, but can make you stand out in a positive way. Find a hat that is functional and get comfortable with it. A hat can become a part of your style, and that's when you start to look really good. When French soldiers were going into the trenches of WWI, their loved ones would pin flowers to their lapels. Knights often times wore flowers. What makes flowers beautiful is the fact that they won't be around for long. Ascots, pocket watches, and casual silk scarves can be more for the dandy. Mindset Takeaway: There's a reason some items have survived centuries, so learn how to use them! Resources: Ancient Style Secrets Video Aqua Velva RealMenRealstyle.com/Episode69

Women are highly in-tune with their surrounding and, whether they realize it or not, they are quick to judge. You only have a few seconds to land the right first impression, and there are ten very important things to be aware of. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style to know what you need to concentrate on to really improve your game and be the kind of a guy that attracts women, not scares them away. 10 Things Women Notice: Your silhouette Your body language Your hands Your face Your smile Clothing Your greeting Style details Your fragrance Your voice Highlights:  The first thing a woman will notice is your shape. Show off your wider shoulders, and narrower midsection. A leather jacket will help make a stronger silhouette Make sure you look approachable. People watch where your hands are going out of safety. She's going to notice if you are looking at her or not. If she is interested in you, she will look right at you. Women check out men just as much as men do women, but women are better at using their peripheral vision. Your smile is in your control, and you need to learn to use it. Don't be afraid to give a quick smile. Your tone, and how you acknowledge them is very important. Don't be afraid to be the first person to say hello. Women will notice details of your hair, watch, and the subtler accessories you have. Don't overpower people with your cologne (one spray only!) How you speak and your genuine knowledge will stand out. People will often forget what you say, but not how you make them feel. Make sure you have a positive energy people want to be around. You could take almost any Bond outfit and it would still work today. You might be asking yourself how this is possible. It's pretty simple. Trends change, but being classy doesn't. It's easier to find styles that last when it comes to formal clothing, but it gets trickier when you are dealing with casual attire. Light colored suit or jacket. Summer trousers. Shorts. Loafers. Socks. Sunglasses. Quarter zip sweater. Highlights: It's not about the newest trends, keep it simple. Wear solid colors. Avoid what's “in style” and stick with the classics. Your fit is incredibly important. Find a brand that fits your body type, and personal style. We are exposed to disposable clothing in this country. Spend the extra to get better quality clothing. Expensive clothing costs more for a reason. When you dress sharp, you want to look like a million dollars. White or light blue polos are safe bets. Get a performance fabric. You can wear a patterned button down. Have plain, stiffer collar dress shirts. Beware of linens, as they may wrinkle. Jackets without lining can help keep the sun off your skin. If you wear shorts make sure they fit well. Don't wear cargo shorts! Make sure your shorts aren't too long. You can wear no-show socks. Go with aviators or Wayfarers. Avoid sport wrap-arounds. At night it gets cool, and you should have a sweater. If someone else gets cold, having a sweater will make you the hero. Wear a straw hat. Did they tell you a Goodyear Welt is the best or that a Blake Stitch will irritate your feet? Well, these may not be true. The best thing you can do is arm yourself with knowledge before you start looking for a shoe. Everyone wants to protect their feet while looking good. When it comes down to how shoes are made there are 3 types of construction. None of them are better than they others, but they all certainly have their own advantages and disadvantages. If you are the kind of person that goes through soles faster than most people you may want one type. If you need something more waterproof you'll probably want a different style. Download this episode of Real Men Real Style to learn how footwear is made, and find the type that will suit your lifestyle. The 3 Types of Show Construction: Cementing Goodyear Welt Blake Stitch Highlights: Upper is the section that is the leather portion covering the foot. The insole is the material inside the shoe that touches your foot. Outsole is on the exterior of the shoe, that touches the ground. Welt is found on higher end shoes. It's the strip of leather that runs around the border of outsole. Last is a 3D model of a foot used to maintain shape of shoe during construction. Cementing is the most common construction. Uses an adhesive to connect the sole to the upper. Best used with a rubber sole, not leather. Advantage: Inexpensive. Disadvantages: Will fall apart and generally not worth getting resoled. Goodyear Welt is a stitching along the outside of the upper. Bottom of the upper is shaped over the last and stitched on the outside. Makes resoling much easier. Advantages: Considerably waterproof, most cobblers can resole, and the shoe can be sewn yourself. Disadvantage: Much more expensive, and don't have much flexibility Blake stitch is stitched on the inside of the shoe. Requires specialized machines to resole. Advantages: Get advantages of Goodyear Welt at a lower price, can get resoled, upper and lower connect looks better, and much more flexible. Disadvantage: Is not as water resistant as Goodyear Welt, it has to be sent to special shops to be resoled which is more expensive, and the interior stitching can irritate some people's feet. Mindset Takeaway: It's important to know the shoe construction for your particular needs and wants. Show Notes: RealMenRealStyle.com/Episode66 Dating today is very complicated. It can be tough just to find a woman. Once you finally get a girl to say yes then you're put into a whole new awkward situation: who should pay for the date? Some women get upset if you don't pay, others get insulted if you do pay. So what's the right answer? Unfortunately, it's not as clear cut as it was for my father's generation. It used to be that if you were a man, you paid. End of story. We are seeing a shift in our society's mindset on the issue. More and more women are feeling that a man shouldn't pay, or at least shouldn't feel obligated to. In fact a study showed that 3 out of 10 women think a man shouldn't pay. On this episode of Real Men Real Style we discuss the response to this question from 10 women at the top of their field. From journalists, to comedians, to academic scholars you'll hear the wide range of answers. You'll be surprised at how similar, yet different, all of their answers were. Listen to this episode today to hear how you can avoid the awkward and frustrating moment of what to do when the check comes. 10 Opinions About Who Should Pay:  A dating coach said a man should take the old school approach and pay. A journalist feels the person who asks for the date should pay. A sex blogger felt each date should be paid 50/50. A comedienne thinks you should consider who makes an average of 19.7% more money. A model/actress thinks a man has to spend money to impress a girl. An academic feminist feels a man shouldn't try to buy a woman. A weightlifter feels that it's up to the guy to make the gesture. A reporter feels you should pay for the right reasons. A feminist writer feels that it shouldn't matter who pays. A porn star insists a man should be willing to go all the way. Highlights: Figure out pretty quick how a woman you are dating feels about who pays. Think about who invited who. Is it personal or is it business? Paying can also be a way to thank someone for their time. Try to settle the payment before ordering the food. Consider who is drinking and how much. 7 out of 10 women think a man should pay. A man needs to have table manners, and shouldn't talk about himself too much. Just because you spent money doesn't mean you are entitled to the woman. It's not the fact that you pay, but the reason why you are doing it that matters. Mindset Takeaway: Know your date's feelings about who pays before anyone even orders. The Hacks: Know your stretch, and look for clothes with the correct amount of stretch Shave your sweaters Use layers to create the perfect fit Wear your best fitted clothing when you go out to get clothes to compare it with what you want to get Look at the inside of a piece of clothing as a tiebreaker for what is the highest quality Always take one item that pushes the boundaries into the dressing room, just to see if you like it Whenever you're buying a nice pair of shoes, try to buy a matching belt as well Buy some extra laces for your shoes Get into the habit of taking care of your footwear To stretch out a pair of shoes, take a ziplock bag, fill it with water, put it in the shoe, and freeze it to stretch it out just a little bit Use a salt solution to soften your T-shirt Mindset Takeaway: Go through all of the above hacks that I've never shared before, so see if there's anything specific that you can takeaway to improve the impression that you make on others. This episode discusses both the mechanics of dressing well while carrying a firearm, along with the reasons I personally choose to carry a weapon. I understand that this is a controversial subject and one that can lead to a heated discussion in the comments. I don't need to defend myself. I may engage in a few comments to clarify some confusion, but I have no interest in engaging in an online battle about gun control. As part of today's episode I brought on Antonio Centeno of Real Men Real Style. Antonio is a former officer of the USMC and the resident style author for the Art of Manliness.
