Amit Peled is a renowned Israeli-American cellist and conductor who has made a remarkable transition from growing up on a Kibbutz in Israel to becoming a Superstar Cellist and a Professor of Music at Johns Hopkins University. He's performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall and the Seoul Arts Center among many others. Matt and Kari Landry are the husband and wife duo who play saxophone and clarinet and who are the founders of the Akropolis Reed Quintet, the Grammy winning chamber ensemble. The Akropolis is a nonprofit venture run by Kari and for which Matt is the artistic director. The group has been together for 16 years and has premiered and commissioned over 200 works by living artists and composers. Steve recaps his family golfing trip down to South Carolina. It's the cultural exchange that makes travel fun, right? Brandon rented a BIG OLE TRUCK and did some man-work. Warriors of the Wasteland: Nuclear war has destroyed society. We're left with two groups of people. One group of good guys who think humanity can be salvaged with niceness, and another one that thinks anyone who survived the apocalypse should be hunted down and killed and then the hunters will off themselves, for some reason. Then there's a lone-wolf guy who travels around the desert doing the right thing. The guy gets stuck between the two groups when he tries to save some lady. Have you heard this plot line before? Warriors of the Wasteland final grade: Steve: A fun movie to watch. Plenty of cool explosions. You notice a lot of the director's Spaghetti Western background. 4.024/5.0Brandon: One of, if not the best 80s-era post-apocalyptic desert movie. My pulse pounded. My heart raced. This was a fun movie and the guys had fun watching it. Phillip starts the show by giving the general information for the movie with a some trivia sprinkled in. It's then time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Phillip and A.C. then discuss all the cool things in this movie. Then A.C. gives his user guide to Spaghetti Westerns. (It's a good list so write it down.) They then answer the question of whether they noticed anything in the movie that Tarantino might have liked or used in a film. It's then time to individually rate the movie. Phillip and A.C. then talk about whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. Then Phillip gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; From Darkness To Light (2024) (4 stars). A.C. gives a recommendation of a movie that a friend of his made, Left One Alive (2024). This is an Encore Presentation of my December 2022 interview with Bruce Belland of The Four Preps, America's first boy band. Their 1958 million selling hit “26 Miles Across The Sea” made them into international pop stars. The song influenced Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and inspired Jimmy Buffett. The Preps were featured on the Ed Sullivan Show and had a recurring role in “Ozzie And Harriet”. They even co-starred in the movie “Gidget” with Sandra Dee. In total they had 8 Gold Singles and 3 Gold Albums. They dominated the charts in the 1970s with their album “Breakfast In America” which sold over 20 million copies. Fred Lipsius, the saxophonist and an arranger for Blood Sweat & Tears, another one of the greatest bands of the modern era, which introduced the horn section into Rock ‘n Roll. Their self-titled second album won the Grammy for Record Of The Year in 1970. The gang plays the harmonica this week as they review #52 in the IMDB greatest movies of all time, Once Upon a Time in the West, directed by the great Sergio Leone. After Leone completed his dollars / Man with no name trilogy, he vowed to leave the western genre alone, until he was given the chance to make a movie with his favorite actor of all time, Henry Fonda. He's also a lifelong friend of and collaborator with Steve Martin and played on his hit song “King Tut” and also on their Grammy winning bluegrass album. He's recorded over 40 albums including four that went Platinum and 5 Gold. His latest album is a spoken word record called “The Newsman”.
