Big stream or big screen? This week, Tosin Ajayi and Shaun Harris fly solo as Sharon enjoys a getaway in Dorset and Holly explores the culture of London. The duo settles in to decide if your hard-earned money is better spent at the cinema or in the comfort of your own home.Lee Cronin's The Mummy: Tosin dives into this Blumhouse production, which swaps desert adventures for a harrowing psychological horror story in Cairo and New Mexico. While praising the performances of Jack Reynor and the child actors, Tosin finds the film's two-hour runtime a bit bloated. Rating: 3/5 Stars40th Anniversary Re-release of Akira: Shaun witnesses the legendary 1988 anime on the big screen for the first time. He finds the first hour of neo-Tokyo biker gang warfare and military experimentation gripping, though he admits the final act gets a bit "slow and weird." Rating: 3/5 StarsEagles Over London (Amazon Prime): Shaun revisits this 1969 "Macaroni War" film (the Italian war movie equivalent of a Spaghetti Western). He enjoys the D-Day sabotage plot and the classic 1960s use of split-screen, despite the technically inaccurate period equipment. Rating: 3/5 StarsCaptive Audience (BBC iPlayer): Tosin explores this three-part true-crime documentary about the 1972 disappearance and miraculous return of Steven Stayner. While the first two episodes are riveting, Tosin feels the final installment falls into the trap of sensationalism. Rating: 3/5 StarsWith every review landing a solid average, Tosin and Shaun declare this week a dead tie between the cinema and the streaming platforms.Next Week: The team prepares for the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic!Join the Conversation!Think we're crazy for giving Akira only three stars? Today Matt & Todd saddle up with (not Wolverine) Logan for a retrospective on one of cinema's most iconic, sharp‑eyed but little-discussed legends: Lee Van Cleef.Few actors have ever done more with a squint, a silhouette, or the simple act of entering a room. Lee Van Cleef embodied a whole cinematic archetype. From Westerns to war films to Italian genre oddities to 80s action pulp, his career is a treasure full of gems any actor would be proud of.This episode explores the major stops along that trail, to name a few that we mention:High Noon (1952)Van Cleef's film debut, silent but unforgettable. Even without dialogue, he stands out—those cheekbones and that stare do half the acting for him. A small role, but the beginning of legend. For a Few Dollars More (1965)The real turning point. As Colonel Douglas Mortimer, Van Cleef becomes a full‑fledged Leone gunslinger. He was cool, lethal, and unexpectedly soulful. He matches Eastwood beat for beat, proving he wasn't just a villain, but a presence. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)Angel Eyes. One of the greatest villains in film history. Van Cleef's performance is all precision: calm, polite, and terrifying. The Big Gundown (1966)A masterpiece of the Spaghetti Western era. Van Cleef's Jonathan Corbett is a bounty hunter with a conscience, and the film gives him room to be complex, conflicted, and commanding. This is peak Van Cleef—charismatic, dangerous, and magnetic. The Big Showdown (1967)A looser, more playful follow‑up to Gundown, showing Van Cleef's ability to shift gears without losing his edge. He's still the coolest man in the room, but now with a wink.Barquero (1970) A criminally underrated American Western and one of Van Cleef's best roles. As Travis, the ferry‑man who becomes the last line of defense against a gang of killers, Van Cleef is gruff, stubborn, and absolutely riveting. This is the movie that proves he wasn't just a European Western icon—he could carry a gritty American frontier story with equal force. If you watch only one deep‑cut Van Cleef film, make it Barquero which features a tremendous cast with stellar performances including the always great Warren Oates and Forrest Tucker.Escape from New York (1981)Snake Plissken may be the star, but Van Cleef's Hauk is the heavy with a steel core. Older, grayer, but still radiating authority. Code Name: Wild Geese (1984)Pure 80s Euro‑action pulp. Van Cleef brings gravitas to a movie that desperately needs it, elevating the mercenary‑mayhem with that trademark “I've seen everything and survived it” energy. One of the most action-packed endings you'll see with a lifetime of pyrotechnics in one scene. The Master (1984, TV Series)Van Cleef as a ninja master. On television. In the 80s.Is it absurd? Yes.Is it terrible? Actually, no. Its really just fine 80s cheese. He brings sincerity to a role that could've been pure camp, and the result is a cult oddity that's impossible not to enjoy.Plus:Ride Lonesome, Sabata, The Magnificent Seven Ride, The OctagonLee Van Cleef never phoned it in, even in the wildest genre films. He could be heroic, villainous, or something intriguingly in‑between. He had a face that told stories before he spoke a word.He elevated everything he touched—from masterpieces to B‑movies to TV curiosities. If you know, you know. Upon entering adulthood, Tracy settled into life as a wife and mother, but the theater came calling again when her husband accepted a job as a junior high drama teacher.  Once again, those challenges presented themselves—little to no budget, a small stage with only a few working lights, and difficulty finding scripts with enough roles for his ever-increasing class numbers.  That is when playwriting entered Tracy's life.  With the start of school quickly approaching, Tracy decided to pen her first one-act play, an adaptation of O. Henry's “The Gift of the Magi”.  The play was well received by the students, and Tracy decided to seek publication for the script as well as continuing to write more one-act plays and eventually full-length plays as well. Tracy now has more than two hundred published plays and skits with a number of publishers and her plays have been produced all across the country as well as internationally.  When she writes a play, Tracy continues to keep in mind those challenges she recognized all those years ago on the high school stage—limited budget, small stages, and the desire to let each character shine.  Tracy continues to write plays for the youth and Christian market and resides with her husband and two children in Metro Detroit. The Scene TeamJustin Borak - Host Zach Dulli - Executive Producer KJ Lampar - Producer Leah Barker - Producer & Talent CoordinatorJim Colleran - EditorAdditional music and sound effects licensed through Envato ElementsLinksBe sure to follow The Scene Podcast on Instagram and YouTubeSubscribe to The Scene NewsletterSpecial ThanksJennifer IsaacsonLauren KardosJeffery KeilholtzShow ContributorsLeah BarkerJustin BorakJim ColleranZach DulliKJ LamparTracy Wells The Scene TeamJustin Borak - Host Zach Dulli - Executive Producer KJ Lampar - Producer Leah Barker - Producer & Talent CoordinatorJim Colleran - Editor Additional music and sound effects licensed through Envato Elements LINKSBe sure to follow The Scene Podcast on Instagram and YouTubeSubscribe to The Scene Newsletter

On this 20th and final episode of 2025, host Dr Pasquale Iannone is joined by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling. Christopher is an internationally renowned educationalist, historian and broadcaster who spent more than 35 years at London's Royal College of Art as Professor of Cultural History and then as Rector. Across more than five decades, Christopher has published widely on film, literature and the arts with volumes exploring everything from the Middle Ages to the Gothic. He is as a pioneer in the academic study of the Spaghetti Western, with publications such as his 1981 book on the subject and his definitive biography of director Sergio Leone (2000).Christopher tells Pasquale about his latest book The Hollywood History of Art (2025), a mammoth, lavishly illustrated volume from Reel Art Press which explores the ways in which Hollywood cinema has approached the lives (and works) of artists. Christopher explains how the idea for the book came about and how he developed the structure. Discussion then turns to specific films such as Rembrandt (1936), Lust for Life (1956), The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965), Love is the Devil (1998) and Frida (2002).

This time we watched the 1973 British horror film Psychomania, a cult biker horror oddity originally filmed as The Living Dead before the title changed. In the United States it appeared as The Death Wheelers. Not to be confused with the 1963 American film Psychomania, also known as Violent Midnight. The film was produced by Benmar Productions, better known for Spaghetti Westerns shot in Spain. They also made Horror Express later the same year with the same writers, which we covered back in episode 7. Psychomania was created in association with Scotia Bar Distributors who had director Don Sharp under long term contract.Don Sharp was born in Tasmania and began as an actor before becoming a director in the mid 1950s. He turned out low and medium budget films including the Tommy Steele musical It's All Happening, then Hammer Films hired him and he made several well received thrillers. He also worked as second unit director on Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Quiz time for Jon. Sharp directed BigChrisLee six times. Name them. Beryl Reid plays psychic medium Mrs Latham. She left school at 16 and debuted in 1936 as a music hall performer at the Floral Hall in Bridlington. She became famous on BBC radio in Educating Archie as Monica and as the Brummie Marlene. She later worked for the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She made the very first challenge on Just A Minute in the 1967 pilot. In the late 1970s and early 1980s she played Connie Sachs in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People, earning two British Academy Television Award nominations and winning for Smiley's People. Doctor Who fans will know her as Captain Briggs in Earthshock. The same year as Psychomania she appeared in Dr Phibes Rises Again. Ross will always remember her as Grandma in the Adrian Mole TV adaptation. Nicky Henson plays lead biker Tom Latham. A familiar face across British television, he excelled at playing cultivated gents, snobs and playboys. His many guest roles included several appearances in The Bill, A Touch of Frost, Pie in the Sky, Fawlty Towers and Witchfinder General as Trooper Swallow. His first wife was Una Stubbs, with whom he later appeared in EastEnders. Despite living with cancer for twenty years he continued acting on screen until 2018. Robert Hardy plays Chief Inspector Hesseltine. We discussed him fully in episode 41a when we covered The Stalls of Barchester from the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas series. Academy Award winner George Sanders plays Shadwell. Born in Russia to an English horticulturist mother and a rope maker father, he became a British subject when the family fled during the revolution. His smooth voice and upper class accent made him perfect for polished villains. His roles included Jack Favell in Rebecca, Scott Folliott in Foreign Correspondent, the Saran of Gaza in Samson and Delilah and Addison DeWitt in All About Eve which won him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He voiced Shere Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book and played Simon Templar in several films in The Saint series. British horror fans may know him from the Doomwatch movie as The Admiral. There are brief appearances by June Brown as Mrs Pettibone, John Levene from Doctor Who and Bill Pertwee as a publican. Levene worked with Jon Pertwee who was Bill's second cousin. The soundtrack by John Cameron was released in 2003 by Trunk Records. Cameron said they needed something spooky and different with a rock feeling, all pre synthesizer. They recorded at Shepperton's studios which had not been updated since before the war. He described hooligan musicians scratching inside pianos while the engineer sat there in suit and tie, completely anachronistic.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. “We're as real as a f**king donut!” Join Ian, Liam & Beadle Steve for our 307th episode as we cruise down Sunset Boulevard, slip into our moccasins, and take a long, nostalgic look at Quentin Tarantino's sun-drenched fairytale Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Megs and Kev? They're not with us this week — Megs got invited to a last-minute audition on a Spaghetti Western set outside Rome, and Kev got lost trying to hitchhike to the Playboy Mansion. We wish them both luck. We're also waxing poetic about Jay Glennie's excellent history of the film with "The Making of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time In Hollywood" available everywhere now. This week we discuss: How Tarantino utilises revisionist history and a clear late sixties aesthetic into his most affectionate, laid-back film yet. Leonardo DiCaprio's turn as Rick Dalton — insecure, electric, and oddly sympathetic. Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth — stuntman, handyman, maybe-murderer, absolute legend. Beadle Steve weighs in on the film's leaving of breadcrumbs and its toasty payoff How the film handles Sharon Tate with grace, warmth, and unexpected emotional weight much to Liam's appreciation The Manson Family sequences — slow-burning dread done right but where is Charlie and why does Ian argue it's the right call for the film? Ian breaks down Tarantino's structural choices: meandering brilliance or indulgent reimagining? The film's controversial ending — catharsis, fantasy, or simply Tarantino being Tarantino?  Does it help if you know the real life history? Someone argues it doesn't matter and the film still works. Nostalgia vs. narrative: does the film rely too heavily on vibes, or is that the point? We question whether OUATIH is a buddy film, a fairy tale, a love letter, or all of the above. The “Rick Dalton meltdown” scene — one of the great comedic acting moments of the decade? Which parts got combined and then split again on account of scheduling conflicts Who was supposed to be in the film if not for tragedy occurring? THIS SPECIAL EPISODE introduces “WHAT'S UP!”, my new compilation album featuring 10 of my recent singles. The songs run the gamut from instrumentals to a few vocals, and they cross genres from Jazz to Rock to Pop and Fusion. This episode features excerpts from the songs.“Rough Rider” captures a cool, 1960s, Spaghetti Western kind of vibe. You can almost picture Clint Eastwood giving it to the bad guys.“Day At The Races” is a fun, upbeat number that reflects the thrills and chills of the racetrack.“The Rich Ones All Stars” features 8 World Class musicians who were all guests on this podcast: Billy Cobham (drums), Randy Brecker (flugelhorn), John Helliwell (sax), Pat Coil (piano), Peter Tiehuis (guitar), Antonio Farao (keys), Elliott Randall (guitar) and David Amram (pennywhistle).“Lovely Girlie” is a fun, upbeat vocal song featuring John Helliwell of Supertramp on sax and Tony Carey of Rainbow on the organ.“Moon Shot” is a firey Jazz Rock Fusion number featuring 5x Grammy winner Mark Lettieri of Snarky Puppy and The Fearless Flyers on guitar solo.“The Cut Of The Knife” is my homage to jazz legend Dave Brubeck and his hit song “Take Five”, and it features Kerry Marx of the Grand Ole Opry band on guitar solo.“Sostice” is a sax driven number that was going to be called “Solstice” until my engineer screwed up the spelling and I loved the nonsense word that he came up with.“Saturday Morning” is the other vocal song in the collection. It's a positive, upbeat song with a reggae beat about the pleasures that we get from everyday events in our lives.“Lou's Blues” is my Jazz Fusion tone poem. I wrote it in the studio and we recorded it in one take.“The Gift” took my love song ballad and was transformed by Michael Abene, Grammy winning arranger, into a big band samba.
