Click here if you'd prefer to watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/A1NwqF301HM?si=kUsGZnPXirL9BhojIn Ep. 041 we open a discussion on tactics vs. strategy. While tactics (specific actions or tools, like webinars) are more visible and often get the credit, the underlying strategy (long-term plans and brand-building) is the real driver of success.Tactics are short-term, instantly gratifying actions that can give the illusion of progress. On the other hand, strategies are long-term plans and efforts that genuinely bring about success. Using Alex Hormozi as an example, we show how it was Hormozi's years of strategic brand-building that allowed his tactics, like his webinar, to be successful. Without the right strategy, even the best-executed tactic is likely to fail.Key Takeaways:Tactics vs. Strategy: Tactics are short-term actions or tools that are visible and often credited for success. Strategy, however, is the long-term plan and effort behind that success.Illusion of Tactics: Tactics can offer instant gratification and make things seem easy, but they're not the main driver of success.Using Alex Hormozi as a Case Study: Alex Hormozi had 500,000 people register for his webinar. But the real success driver was the 4+ years he spent building his personal brand. The Iceberg Analogy: What we see (tactics) is just the tip of the iceberg. The real bulk (strategy) is hidden below the surface.Dangers of Blind Copying Competitors: Simply copying another's tactics without understanding or having the underlying strategy can lead to failure.Marketing's Seductive Nature: Marketing can be persuasive, preying on our desires for quick success. But understanding the strategy behind a success story is crucial.Focus on Strategy for Genuine Success (Please!) Before diving into tactics, it's essential to have a solid strategy in place for long-term results. Ok, so it's not American Naval History, but this episode is too interesting not to post. With Professor Bret Devereaux I discuss the essentially non-Mahanian nature of ancient naval warfare. Because galleys were both cheap to build (but expensive to maintain) and had very limited operational endurance, the missions they could perform and the strategic use of galley navies was extremely different than Age of Sail and modern navies. For anyone used to thinking about naval power in the modern era this is going to be a paradigm shifting discussion! Note: This is the long version of this episode containing about 20 minutes of interesting side discussions. When we share our biblical worldview, people react with either enthusiasm or repulsion—just like in the book of Acts. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses events from Acts that can help us anticipate what we'll encounter as we share our God-stories within our culture. God's truth evokes a spiritual response—people either accept it and are freed and transformed, or they reject it and move further into bondage and destruction. Instead of being silenced by adversity, let's be like Paul—determined to persevere through any difficulty, so more people can hear about Jesus.   To support this ministry and help us continue to reach people all around the world, visit this link: allenjackson.com/podcastdonate

You can spend your life going to church but be ignorant of spiritual things. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson helps us recognize the spiritual forces that shape our lives every day. As Christ-followers, we have an adversary who wants to lead us away from God and ultimately destroy us. We see evidence of this throughout the Bible—Satan even tried to tempt Jesus! We've been deployed in a spiritual battle on behalf of the Kingdom of God, and we need to develop an action plan that will help us recognize the enemy and stand in the authority we've been given in Christ.   To support this ministry and help us continue to reach people all around the world, visit this link: allenjackson.com/podcastdonate

We’ve been talking about decision making for the past several episodes and today I want to help you build a framework to rely upon when making decisions in retirement. This framework for better decision making will help ensure that you are living the life you really want. If you are ready to create a strategy that reflects your values so that you can rock retirement then press play now.  Why do you need to build a decision-making framework? Have you really thought about your values? A person’s values are their principles or standards of behavior. Values are what you feel is important to your life. If you want to build a retirement and a life that you love then you need to live a life that reflects your values. The life that you lead is based on the decisions that you make. So if you want to enjoy a life that stays true to your values you need to put some thought into the decisions that you make. Having a decision making framework in place will help you stay true to your values.  How to create a strategy that reflects your values So now you know why you need a decision-making framework, but how do you build one? You can create a strategy that reflects your values in just 4 easy steps.  Step one is easy to remember. Start with your values! Before you can begin to build your framework you need to establish what is important in your life. What are your values? Create a vision of what you want your life to look like. This may sound a bit cheesy, but try and picture what you want your life to look like. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be important to you. Try asking yourself this question: at the end of your life what would make you think that your life was amazing? What’s your mission? This question leads to the how. How you are going to achieve your vision?  Create strategic objectives that follow your mission. What strategic objectives will you focus on first? How will you focus on your mission? Build your decision-making framework today.  That’s it! Your framework can be as detailed or loose as you need it to be. But if you start taking these 4 steps you can build the strategy to make decisions that will reflect your values. Stay true to yourself and rock your retirement by creating a decision making strategy that you can implement. The ideal framework will reflect your values and set you up to live a life you truly love. Some real-life examples If you are curious about how these steps play out in the real world listen in to hear a couple of examples. You’ll discover how I started my firm and how my values are reflected in what I do. You will also hear how this strategy can be applied to life in retirement. Podiatry Business Coaching & Mentoring If you want to own and operate a Thriving Podiatry Business, there are four vital pieces to the business puzzle.   Marketing - You need a well thought out marketing strategy, not just more tactics.  Systems - You need systems that will support your marketing strategy and your team. Team - You need to develop a team culture that makes your work-life balance easier, not harder.  Diary - Your diary needs to be structured in a way that maximises patient numbers and increases daily profits.  You have two choices: There's the slow approach, where you learn by trial and error and do everything yourself, or you can fast-track your education and business success with one-on-one business coaching and mentoring, or group coaching.  If you want to know more, please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com, and we can set up a Zoom Call and have a quick chat to see if I can be of assistance.

Episode 4️⃣ of 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣0️⃣‼️ In today's episode, Chad and Cody take a look at the impact of the #Coronavirus and #COVID19 on our industry while analyzing Jocko Willink's new book “Leadership Strategy & Tactics.” Jocko explains how to take leadership theory, quickly translate that theory into applicable strategy, and then put leadership into action at a tactical level. I think this is a valuable book and very well could be a solution for leaders at every level―not just to understand the leadership game, but also how to play the leadership game. It's very practical in application and valuable in the midst of our current world crisis. Today Chad & Cody pick out leadership lessons that they feel can help contractors create a competitive advantage by implementing strategic principles from the battle field and translating them to the board room. Episode 1 - My Formula for Business SuccessIn this episode I speak about my secret formula for business success, and let me tell you, it's probably not what you think! For me, success means nothing if you are not personally fulfilled and have the life of your dreams! I'm a big believer in getting really clear on what you want your life to look like. Want more time for travel? Time for your partner and kids? You can create the life and business you want. Making great money and having a great life are not mutually exclusive, you can have both! My 3 Ingredient formula – what it means to me and how to get it! Mindset – when working with entrepreneurs we have to get clear on having the right mindset in place! It's like physical fitness, you don't go once a year to the gym and expect to be fit. It's a daily practice, we have to continue to train and work on. No one is going to believe in you, if you don't believe in you!Books that I would recommend on the subject – Think and Grow Rich (https://www.amazon.ca/Think-Grow-Rich-Updated-Century/dp/1453644911/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1544583990&sr=8-2&keywords=think+and+grow+rich%27) (money mindset), The Secret (https://www.amazon.ca/Secret-Rhonda-Byrne/dp/1582701709/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1544584061&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Secret) (personal development), this one is about the law of attraction and personally I've achieved many things in life due to some of the ideas in this book. Another great book is The Magic of Thinking Big (https://www.amazon.ca/Magic-Thinking-Big-David-Shwartz/dp/1897384424/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1544584144&sr=1-2&keywords=the+magic+of+thinking+big), it speaks to needing to think big in all aspects of your life. A big shout out to James Wedmore, his podcast “Mind Your Business” (https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-mind-your-business-podcast/id1074394632?mt=2) he gives great talks about how having a positive mindset is so great for your business. Go check him out! Mindset is foundational, it's a muscle that we need to train day in and day out. My mindset is that I CAN do this, and I SHOULD do this! Success is 80% mindset and 20% mechanics, the How To's. If you have the mindset then the mechanics becomes a lot easier.Strategy – Entrepreneurs need to have a solid business model. Tactics vs Strategy – Tactics are the small things we do every day. Strategy is figuring out how we are going to get there. Need to have a strong strategy before the tactics will make sense! What are you all about? Who is buying your product? What is your plan? Strategy's change, evolve and grow in your business. Don't get stuck on the action piece of the business, focus on the strategy too!Intentional Action (Hustle!) – You will need to do a lot of hustling in the first year or so of your business because new business won't just fall into your lap. We have to act and be seen so our clients can find us! Don't wait for opportunities, create them if necessary. Are you making excuses? If so, then you need to be more intentional in your actions. My goal for this podcast is for you to stretch your thinking, dig deep into your dreams and consider the following questions: What is the mindset I've put in place? What is the overarching strategy that I've put in place? What are the intentional actions that are helping me get to this success? This is all about believing in yourself, even when other people don't!

M10 Tank Destroyer at Bastogne's Mardasson Memorial John Butterfield When it comes to this podcast, December means two things: a desire to replay the Bulge, and holiday busy-ness. It happens every year. This time, in 2016, I'm just as busy as ever, but the podcast commitment meant I pushed forward to play some Bulge games. Not as many as I would've liked, but enough for the episode. Besides, you've heard how the real focus of my podcasts nowadays are the interviews. I'm learning that the fast, one-month pace I'm keeping for these episodes always compresses my gaming time, but I can still get the podcast out on-time by relying on the interview. It's working. Knowing December would probably not allow me to visit a historic location, I also picked Bulge because it's a place I've visited previously. Back in 2012 I went on a father-son trip before my son went to college, and we visited Bastogne, spent the night in Luxembourg, went to a top Bulge museum, and even saw that cheesy movie. At the time I wasn't doing a wargame podcast, but I included a whole lot about that trip in my longstanding eurogame podcast. You might want to check that out, too. This time, though, I can still talk about another film or two, some light games I've played, and--most of all--feature an interview with designer John Butterfield. In our discussion I had a focus on his famous digital game from Shenandoah/Slitherine called Battle of the Bulge, the one that launched the Crisis in Command series. I've played a ton of it, and have enjoyed jumping back in again. Besides that title, John talks about the Bulge in general, his Enemy Action Ardennes game, and some other stories from his extensive history in the hobby. I know you'll like it. There are a few books I've read on this venerable topic, notably Antony Beevor's Ardennes 1944. Some of the best material I read came from Strategy & Tactics magazine, along with World at War. I learned about the Premium library subscription offered by Decision Games, which lets me access the entire library of SPI/Decision's magazines (no games). Wow! What a goldmine. Along with the article index, I can quickly find which issues contain articles on Bulge/Ardennes, and read those. Danny Parker's extensive articles from 1978 were fantastic.   Movies • The Battle of the Bulge (1965) • Band of Brothers (2001) episodes 6 and 7 focus on the Bulge • Everyman's War (2009) • Battleground (1949) • The Big Red One (1980) • A Midnight Clear (1992) • Saints and Soldiers (2003) Books • Ardennes 1944 by Antony Beevor     The steep review valleys of the Ardennes . . . and a display at Diekirch's National Museum of Military History Remember to follow along & chime in on my geeklist/discussion) for all of my Bulge explorations. If you're a wargamer on social media, follow me on Twitter (@WargamesToGo). Feedback is always welcome. -Mark P.S. If you want to get started on my next topic, it will be the Spanish Civil War.

Timestamps (approximate)    8:37 - Ted Raicer interview   59:18 - Books & Films 1:12:30 - Games 1:32:11 - Visiting the battlefields   I sort of did it to myself again, aspiring to play more games and learn more about the subject matter of this episode. I swear I'm getting calibrated on myself, though, and have big plans to think smaller next time. :) Historic anniversaries in wargaming are appealing to me, because the occasion often leads to the some of hobby community focusing on the same topic. It gets discussed online, good games are suggested, and sometimes there are even new books & documentaries that become available. That was certainly true for 2014's centennial of the start of World War 1. I jumped in, finally reading Barbara Tuchman's famous Guns of August (well, it was an unabridged audiobook), listening to podcasts, watching several dramatic films & documentaries, and playing several wargames. Plus, I was lucky enough to visit some of these battlegrounds on a vacation last summer, which I discuss at the end. When wargamers think of WW1, they probably think of designer Ted Raicer and his many games on the subject. Although Ted's games are typically much larger than the small ones I prefer personally, I still had to try at least one of Ted's games. Even better, Ted was willing to be interviewed for my podcast! We talk about the hobby, but what I really wanted from him was his insight as a historian about The Great War.  I can't speak highly enough about The Guns of August. It's a Pulitzer-winning classic of history and literature for a reason. It's that good. I certainly thought so, anyway. It taught me a lot about this period in history. So did Joe Miranda's companion magazine article  in Strategy & Tactics to his game, Reinforce the Right! I really appreciate the connection between wargame and history that is most exemplified in our hobby's magazine articles. Returning to something I first planned for this podcast, I tried to see a number of films that relate to the subject. Unlike with the games I played, here I was a bit looser about the particular period of the war depicted. Though my gaming focus was just on the western front in 1914, in films I took in the entire war, the "over the top" hellscapes of 1916-17, and even some theaters away from France. Some of these films are well-known, others less so. I was helped by a foreign film series put on by my local community college. I'm so glad that introduced me to La Grande Illusion, for example. (Less thrilled with Oh! What a Lovely War.) Besides the dramatic films, there were three outstanding documentaries I viewed, as well. The Guns of August was a doc I never knew existed as a companion to the book. The other two were outstanding works from BBC.  As for the games I played, they're mostly smaller offerings. That's always my preference, and was easy to find more than enough games to choose from. Too many, in fact. Before and during my "research phase" I used a geeklist to list & comment on the games I played, or why I wasn't getting to some others. The games I played were Paths of Glory, 1914: Opening Moves, We Shall Fight on the Marne, La fleur au fusil, août 1914, Reinforce the Right!, France 1914, and Over the Top! Mons. Some of these games are lighter (some of them quite light/small), but not all of them. This is another aspect of the podcast I'm starting to figure out--just focusing on the games that are best for me. But how could I have skipped Paths of Glory?! I couldn't. (I forgot to discuss one more tiny wargame I tried, ATO's postcard game Fateful Days. It was too minimalist, even for me.) Finally I wrap up with some description of the WW1 sites I've been fortunate enough to visit. In 2012 I went to Verdun and the surrounding area, while in 2014 I went to the Marne and saw different sites. Both visits were very moving. Here are a few photos. (By the way, on the podcast I say that the best preserved/restored WW1 trenches are in Ypres, but I misspoke--they're at Vimy Ridge.) -Mark

"If you have the determination to start and run your own business, then you can have the determination to run it the way you want to run it."- Robert Sofia About: Robert Sofia- Co-Founder of Platinum Advisory Strategies Overview: Robert shares details about his company, Platinum Advisory Strategies- and offers helpful advice for those thinking about breaking into the entrepreneurial world. Highlights: Background: Robert is a long-time public speaker, and hard worker who skipped undergraduate school and worked his way up in the business world where he eventually settled into the marketing/branding scene. In his twenties, he worked for Ford Motor Company where he actually developed a program for them to help build brand loyalty. It was promoted heavily at the Ford dealership where he was working, and then Ford adopted that for their entire company. The experience he gained at Ford leveraged him for more opportunities throughout the years up until he decided to start his own companies. About Platinum Advisory Strategies: Platinum is a company that helps small businesses market like larger companies. Platinum Advisory Strategies takes all of their efforts and focuses on one niche market, and then they strive to understand the industry, the audience, and the people they're working for to merge that into the right branding message. They offer a unique program where they only work with a select group of advisors that fit their profile and that do not work directly with their competition. These advisors actually pay a monthly fee to Platinum to be their marketing partner. As a client at Platinum Advisory Strategies, you are given a consultant specifically assigned to your account and that consultant becomes your guide, your coach, who builds a personal plan for you. They assess what you're weaknesses and strengths are and build an action plan. Then, they help you along the way and answer any questions you may have. Behind that consultant you have an entire team who works on the back end of things like your website, videos, social media, etc. Biggest Challenge: Helping potential clients seeing that they need the help and it's worth the price. Key For Growth and Success: Platinum Advisory Strategies started in 2009. Robert shares that the key that has helped grow was hiring the right team. Robert has many roles he has to juggle and it's very important that he has the perfect team he can trust to help manage things- especially while he is traveling. Speaking Schedule: Robert could be gone every week if he wanted to, but he chooses only to travel 1-2 times a month. He limits himself to the engagements he wants to do to keep the work-life balance. Goals: Over the last 3 years, their company has grown over 1,700 percent in revenue. They have continued to cut costs and grow profit successfully. Because the business is growing quickly, they are always looking for more employees. Robert's goal is to make the company better tomorrow than it was today. For the company, he prefers to take his goals daily, weekly, and monthly- in small increments- to make sure that things that need to be done are not overlooked by the long term goals. For Robert, he wants to live the life that he desires- he's not particularly motivated by the desire to have more things or money. He wants to help his company and his employees. Robert's drive is to have balance in life, he's not concerned about what the world sees as wealthy. Characteristics of a Successful Entrepreneur: First off, being an entrepreneur requires commitment. You have to understand that it's not going to come easy right away- there is a lot of work involved. If you give up too easily, you will not be successful. Have a modest recognition of your own limitations. If you are going to build anything where you'll have employees, you need have good leadership ability. It's also important that you have good business sense. Family support, or support in general is another great tool that will help you do well in whatever you do. Take Away: Robert reminds us not to buy into the hype of entrepreneurship. Understand that you might fail, and make sure you're comfortable with that. You won't always succeed. If you can, try to leverage your existing relationships or career into a business opportunity. Boardgames To Go

Have you ever gone a boardgaming road trip? I expect quite a few people might drive a few hundred miles to go to a game convention, but I've never done that. Games Days on Saturdays are local for me, about the same hour's drive I do on my daily commute. Recently, though, my buddy Dave Arnott drove the two of us halfway up California to spend a weekend of games, food, and conversation with other gamer friends. That was different, and a complete blast! This is sort of like a session report show--remember when I did those? The podcast goes a little long, but that's because we were having fun talking about games on the drive back. That's right, we recorded the podcast about the road trip while we were still on the road trip. Vroom! We got to play a whole lot of great games: a few new ones and several more old favorites. Jeff Myers is working his way through Spiel des Jahres winners on his blog, [url=http://gameguythinks.com/mississippi-queen/]Gameguythinks[/url], so we made sure to play a couple more of those classic titles, [thing=256][/thing] and [thing=54][/thing]. Other old faves we played were [thing=1315][/thing], [thing=73][/thing], [thing=261][/thing] (1994!), and [thing=5306][/thing] (1962!). The newer ones were [thing=123260][/thing] and [thing=103185][/thing]. I'll cheat a little and include [thing=357][/thing], too, since there was a recent reprint. In between is [thing=40769][/thing], which seems to have slipped past people but is really pretty great. Has EnderWiggin does one of his awesome photo-reviews of Valdora? Seems right up his alley. Besides the boardgames, we get to tell a couple side stories. We stopped at a thrift store where I grabbed a few bargains (or not--you tell me). Another of Dave's hobbies is [url=http://www.letterboxing.org/]Letterboxing[/url], which is described as "an intriguing pastime combining navigational skills and rubber stamp artistry in a charming 'treasure hunt' style outdoor quest." Perfect for a road trip! We did that, and we also got to stop at the warehouse for wargame publisher Decision Games. I picked up a couple items in-person, but also had the fun of seeing what goes on at the publisher of Strategy & Tactics, as well as many good wargames.
