“Remembering the stories of our parents and our grandparents, our aunts and uncles, and the struggles that they have gone through. Struggles and the joy - I don't always want to frame the stories of our forbearers in the context of struggle, although a lot of Asian-Americans have had to deal with that. There's a lot of joy to be found in those stories as well. And I hope that those are stories that are passed on and remembered because, as is the case in our movie, it's about the moments that we are able to share with our family, in which we experience happiness and laughter and joy, that are most important, at least to me.And so I hope that's something that we can reflect in our storytelling moving forward as well. You know, I think we've seen a lot of stories framed around the noble struggle, which is what I call it. And I hope we can start diversifying our storytelling a little bit so that we can share a little bit more of the happy pleasures and joys that we experience as families and immigrants as well.”Ken Cheng is a writer/producer who has previously written for Wilfred, Betas, and Sin City Saints. Ken's feature comedy Easter Sunday, which he co-wrote, and executive produced for Amblin Partners, Rideback, and Universal, is inspired by the life and comedy of standup comedian Jo Koy. Forthcoming projects include writing and executive producing the half-hour comedy series, House of Chow, for HBO, co-writing – along with his creative partners at Crab Club, Inc. - a feature film adaptation of the GQ Magazine article, “The Great Chinese Art Heist”, for Warner Bros., Conde Nast, and director Jon M. Today on the show we have director, writer, comedian, and actor Jay Chandrasekhar has contributed to and appeared in a wide variety of critically acclaimed television programs and films throughout his career.Chandrasekhar assembled the sketch comedy troupe Broken Lizard, which includes Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. Together they performed comedy across the nation until they set their sights on producing television and feature films.Under his Broken Lizard banner, Jay directed and co-wrote Fox Searchlight Picture's comedy cult classics Super Troopers, Super Troopers 2, Club Dread, and Warner Bros' Beerfest. He also directed the Broken Lizard comedy special, Broken Lizard Stands Up.Super Troopers hit theaters in February 2002 and went on to gross $23 million with glowing audience reviews (and $80 million on home video.)Jay continued on to direct The Dukes of Hazard, direct and star in Millennium Entertainment's The Babymakers, and appear in DreamWorks' comedy hit, I Love You, Man. Recently, Chandrasekhar published his book, Mustache Shenanigans: Making Super Troopers and Other Adventures in Comedy that gives a behind the scenes look at the making of Super Troopers. In addition to his feature film work, Chandrasekhar has directed various TV shows, including several episodes of the Emmy Award winning series Arrested Development, Community, Chuck, The Grinder, Up All Night, Happy Endings, New Girl, and Psych. More recently, Jay has also directed episodes of Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, Speechless, and Schooled. His new film is Easter Sunday.Stand-up comedy sensation Jo Koy (Jo Koy: In His Elements, Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot) stars as a man returning home for an Easter celebration with his riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family, in this love letter to his Filipino-American community. Easter Sunday features an all-star comedic cast that includes Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley series), Tia Carrere (True Lies, Wayne's World films), Brandon Wardell (Curb Your Enthusiasm series), Tony nominee Eva Noblezada (Broadway's Hadestown), Lydia Gaston (Broadway's The King and I), Asif Ali (WandaVision), Rodney To (Parks and Recreation series), Eugene Cordero (The Good Place series), Jay Chandrasekhar (I Love You, Man), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Courage Under Fire).  Easter Sunday, from DreamWorks Pictures, is directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, The Dukes of Hazzard), from a script by Ken Cheng (series Wilfred, Betas). The film is produced by Rideback's Dan Lin (The Lego Movie franchise, It franchise) and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin, The Two Popes), and is executive produced by Jo Koy, Jessica Gao, Jimmy O. Yang, Ken Cheng, Joe Meloche, Nick Reynolds and Seth William Meier. The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures domestically. Amblin Partners and Universal will share international distribution rights.Jay also just launched a new app designed to give the power of reviews back to the people. It's call Vouch Vault."When my film, Super Troopers, showed at Sundance, it played to big laughing crowds. But when it was released to the public, the reviews were only so-so. On Rotten Tomatoes, Super Troopers, got a 38%-fresh aggregate score from less than a hundred reviewers. With the public, though, the film garnered a 90% fresh rating from more than 250,000 non-reviewers. This 38% reviewer-number stuck in my craw. I remember thinking, “Who are these reviewers, these strangers with outsized power, and why are we listening to them? Seriously. When's the last time you walked up to a stranger and said, “Hey, what movie should I see?”Our goal with Vouch Vault is to take recommendation power from anonymous strangers and give it to the people whose tastes you know and trust."

Introducing Reading the Globe, a new original weekly podcast produced by AudioHopper. Every Thursday, host Michael Washburn summarizes, synthesizes and criticizes the week's most important and fascinating stories. This week, Reading the Globe considers:The crackdown on press freedom in Hong Kong. As reported in the Economist's new issue of June 19, 2021, the so-called national security law that China forced on Hong Kong a year ago has led to one of the most aggressive crackdowns on press freedom in living memory. Police have arrested Ryan Law, editor of the Apple Daily newspaper, and conducted a massive raid on the publication's offices. The law school of the University of Illinois at Chicago has taken the step of dropping the name of John Marshall, the fourth SCOTUS chief justice. The reason for this step has to do with Marshall's problematic record on slavery and his ownership of slaves, but history is always more complex than some would like it to be. San Francisco's crime problem is due, at least according to another editorial, to San Francisco's district attorney Chesa Boudin largely refused to go after petty crimes like shoplifting. This refusal is in keeping with the spirit of a 2014 proposition that made thefts of property worth under $950 a misdemeanor in California. The result? A shoplifting epidemic that led to the closing of 17 Walgreens stores around the city in the past half decade. The Wall Street Journal features a lengthy cover story about French president Emmanuel Macron's aggressive enforcement of a national law regarding laicité, or the official secularism of the French polity. Eric Adams' strong performance in Tuesday's Democratic primary for New York City mayor reveals a city much more concerned with law and order than many expected from the progressive metropolis. On Tuesday, June 22, the New York Post ran a front-page story endorsing Adams in the primary, who got 31% of the vote. Finally, an article in the New York Daily News on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, details how, after having expressed concerns about the challenge that Netflix poses to cinemas, Steven Spielberg's production firm, Amblin Partners, will work with Netflix to develop feature films.

In this episode of "Keen On", Andrew is joined by Judy Batalion, the author of "The Light of Days", to discuss a largely untold story of the holocaust, the story of the young Jewish women who formed a resistance movement and fought back against the Nazis. Judy was born and raised in Montreal, where she grew up speaking English, French, Yiddish and Hebrew, and trying to stay warm. She studied the history of science at Harvard then moved to London to pursue a PhD in art history. All the while, she worked as a curator, researcher, editor, lecturer, comic, MC, script-reader, dramaturge, performer, actor, producer, translator, muffins server, and a temp – at a temp agency. Eventually, Judy transformed these experiences into material, and wrote essays and articles for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Vogue, the Forward, Salon, the Jerusalem Post and many other publications. Her stories about family relationships, the generational transmission of trauma, pathological hoarding and militant minimalism came together in her book White Walls: A Memoir About Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess in Between (NAL/Penguin, 2016). White Walls was optioned by Warner Brothers for whom Judy is currently developing the TV series “Cluttered.” Back in 2007, during her phase of career promiscuity, Judy was doing research on strong Jewish women at the British Library when she happened to come across a dusty, old Yiddish book. Freuen in di Ghettos (Women in the Ghettos), a Yiddish thriller about “ghetto girls” who hid revolvers in teddy bears, bribed Nazis with whiskey and pastry, and blew up German supply trains, became the inspiration for The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos (William Morrow/HarperCollins, 2021). The Light of Days will be published across Europe, and in Brazil and Israel, and was optioned by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, for whom Judy is co-writing the screenplay. (Gey veys… Who knew that Yiddish would become her cash cow?) Judy lives with her husband and three children in New York City. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) is a film about a good man, George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), living in a modern world of greed and corruption. George has big dreams for his life, but one thing after another prevents him from leaving his quaint hometown of Bedford Falls, where he lives an honest life with his wife (Donna Reed) and children and often puts the needs of others above his own. Things go from bad to worse for George, and when the town’s ruthless tycoon (Lionel Barrymore) sets out to destroy him his thoughts turn to suicide. However, that’s when an angel from Heaven intervenes to help George, and also hopefully earn a pair of wings… Michael Wright, CEO of Amblin Partners and former president and head of programming for TCM (Turner Classic Movies), is our Audience of One as James and Lara discuss this beloved Christmas classic. But how did a film with some very dark themes end up as a holiday favorite? Is it true that Cary Grant almost played George? Why is Jimmy Stewart sweating throughout the film? And what about that $50 bet between Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore that involved a cow? Join us and go deeper with IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and its timeless message that no man who has friends is a failure, life is a gift, and we all have an impact on those around us.

This week, we hear the untold story of women resistance fighters in Hitler's ghettos.  We also speak with an author about life in Iraq under Saddam Hussein's regime. Of the legions of stories of World War II and the Holocaust that shape our understanding of those history-changing events, one of the most extraordinary has remained hidden: the daring resistance efforts of Jewish women in the ghettos of the Nazi occupations. In the new book The Light of Days: The Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler's Ghettos, Judy Batalion shares the acts of defiance and rebellion of women who saw and acknowledged the truth of their time. Batalion is also the author of White Walls: A Memoir about Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess in Between.  Her essays have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Vogue. Batalion spent 14 years researching her new book, she says The Light of Days stemmed from her childhood and wanting to write about a strong Jewish female.
