Hot off the heels of our discussion on Kung Fu Panda 2, the gang comes to you with the final film in what may be Dreamworks Studios' finest animated trilogy...if you simply pretend 2024's Kung Fu Panda 4 doesn't exist. It's got multiple dads, several more pandas, another villain voiced by another banger voice actor (hi J.K. Simmons!), and yet another really solid character arc for Po which continues to blow us away considering that the name of this film is literally Kung Fu Panda. And while Marcus dunks on Kai a bit like Michael dunked on Lord Shen in our previous episode, the gang unanimously agrees that the film most certainly earned its "Everybody was kung fu fighting" moment at the end. Will we move on to our review on Kung Fu Panda 4 next? No, we don't think we will. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.
Initially an actress ('Les Miserables', 'Aspects of Love', et al.), Merri found herself out West some years back where she quickly made a name for herself at Liberman/Hirschfeld Casting, then Liberman/Patton Casting, working on such shows as Seinfeld, Party of Five, HBO's Band of Brothers, the feature film My Big Fat Greek Wedding and the Miramax feature film "Playing By Heart", starring Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie. In 2000, Merri moved to Dreamworks Studios as the Casting Executive in charge of TV Pilots and Series- including "Spin City", “Freaks and Geeks” and the critically acclaimed "The Job", starring Denis Leary. She was then offered a position as the Director of Casting for Dramas and Movies at ABC Television, overseeing the casting of the series "Alias", "NYPD Blue", "The Practice" and the made for television movies "Gilda Radner - It's Always Something" and "The Music Man", starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth, to name just a few. Merri then returned to the East Coast to teach and coach actors – something she still does (and loves) as time permits, when Tara Rubin offered her a Senior Casting Director position where she's been happily ensconced ever since, working on, among many others - the Broadway, touring and international companies of THE WHO'S TOMMY, COMPANY, AIN'T TOO PROUD, JERSEY BOYS,THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, LES MISERABLES, SCHOOL OF ROCK, MISS SAIGON, A BRONX TALE, CLUELESS the Musical, TREVOR the Musical (2023 Artios Award) and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (2024 Artios Award) The TRC office is also responsible for the casting of Billy Crystal's series “Before” for Apple TV and the Broadway productions of The Outsiders, SIX and Death Becomes Her, just to name a few Merri also casts for many theaters regionally – including The Papermill Playhouse, Lyric Opera of Chicago, The Old Globe, Seattle Rep, The Goodman and The La Jolla Playhouse. She is the very proud Casting Director of the critically acclaimed web series SUBMISSIONS ONLY and also boasts having cast many other independent TV & film projects, workshops and readings. In 2024, Merri took on some passion projects on the side, as well. These include the highly acclaimed and starry concert production of “FOLLIES” at Carnegie Hall for Transport Group's annual benefit gala, and a reading of a new play at The Actors Studio written by Lyle Kessler (“Orphans”) and directed by Academy Award winner Bobby Moresco – starring Chazz Palminteri, Tim Blake Nelson and Gina Gershon. In addition, Merri is now also the Casting Director at The South Carolina New Play Festival. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

During this podcast, we talked about his latest book, the one dog that had four incarnations within the story, the reason he was inspired to write the book and the screenplay he is co-writing for DreamWorks Studios to make A Dog's Purpose into a movie. Without giving away the ending of the story, the dog does figure out his purpose in life.

Later in the show, Dr. Robin welcomes Debra O'Bryan who is the Dream Manager and Well-Being Manager at CommunityAmerica Credit Union. She shares the moment when “active listening” was introduced in her life, and why the book by Michael Sorenson called I Hear You changed her relationships – both in the workplace and in her personal life. Debra also explains why listening can be difficult for us, and why it's important not to fall into the “giving advice” or “fix it” trap when someone else is speaking. Instead, she encourages us to pause and validate what they must be feeling in this moment. Debra also sprinkles in some great active listening tips that can shift a company culture and build even better connections between its team members. Memorable Quotes: “So, I just started to challenge some people in my community, some friends, and people in the film industry. Like, can you turn your phone into a brick for an hour a day and do something that you love in the real world?” “The problem today is that we are being overloaded with these dopogenic rewards, these things that give us that dopamine, that don't actually help us survive. Every single follow, every single email, every single vibration in our pocket gives us that sense of dopamine, and we've become overstimulated to it.” “I think that we're now at this kind of new pillar of wellness where you need to carve out time and effort to get off the grid for your own mental health and wellbeing.” “In my professional life I was doing a really good job of active listening, it was in my personal life with my family that I was getting it completely wrong. Validation in active listening was a game changer for me and my family.” “We fall into advice, and not really listening, especially as a mom, we just want to fix it. But really, what people want in that moment – when we're venting – is we want someone to appreciate our struggle and empathize with us.” “Active listening gets us to pause. It gets us to appreciate our relationships, and to learn. There are so many things we miss if we don't take the time to listen.” What You'll Learn: How to create better habits around screen time and phone usage to live more fully, plus how active listening can help you develop stronger relationships both at work and at home. This Episode Includes: While working in social media for Steven Spielberg at Dreamworks Studios, Tommy realized he was spending the equivalent of 5 months a year on his phone. Tommy was able to tie his anxiety, stress, and unhappiness to the amount of time spent on his phone. He decided to test his theory and spent one hour a day for a year doing something other than checking his phone. He was able to read 27 books that year. Tommy challenged his co-workers and friends to do the same. Out of that challenge sprang the digital wellness movement and the brick community. Tommy explains the neuroscience behind phone addiction and how we can change that addiction through habit formation. He believes the new frontier of wellness is going to be digital wellness. When creating new habits environmental design is one of the first tips that Tommy shares with people. If you are able to design your environment in such a way that you remove your phone from the situation it is easier to avoid checking it. For example, purchase a digital alarm clock rather than use your phone to keep it out of the bedroom. When you practice environmental design, you end up finding yourself being more present, more focused, and more attentive, and you're not even using willpower. When teaching your kids about digital wellness it's important not to vilify the phone. Instead, teach your kids the freedom they get to experience when they remove the phone from the equation. People are overwhelmed, stressed, fearful of the future, and so on, but there are ways that being an active listener can help them process their emotions without you having to give advice. Why active listening begins with empathy, and asking yourself, “How would I be feeling if I were in their shoes?” Why micro-validating team members throughout the day can make a difference on morale. Micro-validating allows people to move from emotion to logic. Logic cannot be reached without validation. Why it's important to ask a person if they need someone that will just listen or if they are looking for advice. Most people will know the answer. The importance of self-validation, and why we need to remember the phrase, “Be careful what you say, you're listening.” Three Takeaways from Today's Episode: Turn your phone into a brick for one hour a day and try to do something you love instead. Create phone-free zones in your house like in your bedroom or your car. How to shift from giving advice to people and start listening to improve all of your relationships with people. As artists, what do we talk about when the world's on hold? From Casting Director to Actor, we take a deep dive. This week, we're joined by Merri SugarmanMerri Sugarman- Casting Director, Tara Rubin Casting.Initially an actress ('Les Miserables', 'Aspects of Love', et al.), Merri found herself out West some years back where she quickly made a name for herself at Liberman/Hirschfeld, then Liberman/Patton Casting, working on such shows as "NewsRadio", "The Larry Sanders Show" and the Miramax feature film "Playing By Heart", starringSean Connery and Angelina Jolie. In 2000, Merri moved to Dreamworks Studios as the Casting Executive in charge of TV Pilots and Series- including "Spin City", and the critically acclaimed "The Job", starring Denis Leary. She was then offered a position as the Director of Casting for Dramas and Movies at ABC Television, overseeing the casting of "Alias", "NYPD Blue", "The Practice" and the 'made for television movies’"Gilda Radner - It's Always Something" and "The Music Man", starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth, to name just a few.Merri then returned to the East Coast to teach and coach actors – something she still does (and loves) as time permits, when Tara Rubin offered her a Senior Casting Director position where she’s been happily ensconced ever since, working on, among many others - the Broadway and Off-Broadway, touring and international companies of SPAMALOT, JERSEY BOYS, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, LES MISERABLES, SCHOOL OF ROCK, MISS SAIGON, A BRONX TALE, DEAR EVAN HANSEN, AIN’T TOO PROUD and the upcoming SIX and SING STREET.She also casts for many theaters regionally – including the Papermill Playhouse, The Alliance, Arena Stage,The Old Globe and The LaJolla Playhouse. Reviewing the worst of the worst - so you don't have to!For their tenth episode spectacular, Nathan Packham and Jacob Simmons review DreamWorks Studios' first attempt at an adult TV show, Father of the Pride. Set in the Las Vegas zoo owned by magicians, Siegfried and Roy, Father of the Pride centres around a dysfunctional family of lions and their various friends including a gay elephant, some steroid-pumping warthogs, and a lobster political activist. Nathan and Jacob are left astounded by this show's poor animation quality, ridiculous plotlines, blunt sense of humour, and an episode that Jacob calls "the worst episode of TV I've ever seen".Don't forget to vote in our Episode 12 Poll!Find us on Facebook - www.facebook.com/badthingspodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/BadThingsPod (@badthingspod)Instagram - www.instagram.com/badthingspod (@badthingspod)Theme music - Boo Boogie by Doug Wood. Twenty years ago, American cinemas were rocked by one of the best overall years in movie history. Legends Podcast has celebrated the Legends of ‘99 all year long, and now we’re wrapping up with our most favorite films of the year. Finally, Lobster brings our celebration of ‘99 to its natural conclusion. There were many fine films of 1999, but the years have dimmed the luster of some of the year’s top contenders. And though many films of ‘99 are still beloved by audiences, very few have seen their legend grow over the two decades since their release the way this film’s legend has. There were many fine films of 1999, but none finer than Galaxy Quest. Released on Christmas Day, the film, which came out of a troubled production for DreamWorks Studios, flew under box office radar, but earned praise from critics and audiences alike, and secured an enduring legacy as what George Takei called “a chillingly realistic documentary.” Now, MovieDude Eric joins Beef, Wing, and Lobster to take on the final Legend of ‘99. REUTERS JURASSIC WORLD 3 CON ELENCO ORIGINAL. Now, he's left that all behind to help us have a healthier relationship with our phone and technology. He's founded GoBrickNow.com, which shows us how through one simple phone hack, we can reclaim some of our time back and truly connect with the world and the people in it. In this episode, I sit down with Tommy to talk about lessons he's learned along the way going from student, to set assistant, to new media executive, to social entrepreneur. We talk about how his new phone usage habits affect his relationships, his business, and how we can benefit from the same. We hear Maureen Fan’s answers to those pressing questions on today’s episode! Maureen Fan is the COO and co-founder of Baobab Studios, a virtual reality animation company that makes animated shorts and films! She founded the company with Eric Darnell, the writer, and director of all four Madagascar films, and the movie Antz. Baobab’s third co-founder is Larry Cutler, who was the technical director for Toy Story 2 and Monster’s Inc. and was also the global head of character technologies for DreamWorks Studios. They all handle differently, but equal, parts of the company with Maureen managing the business aspect, Eric steering Baobab’s creative direction, and Larry representing technical. Together they have turned Baobab into the top VR animation studio, and won the 2017 Daytime Emmy for “Outstanding Interactive” for their first animation, INVASION; which will soon become a feature film! For Maureen, animation has been a love of hers for as long as she can remember. She even designed her own undergrad major for animation studies at Stanford called Art, Computer Science, and Psychology. Despite her passion for animation, she said her immigrant parents didn’t see it as a practical career path. So after college, she became a UI designer for eBay, and while she said she loved it, she still couldn’t shake her desire to become an animator. To continue to pursue her dream career, she began taking classes on nights and weekends at De Anza College, where a lot of George Lucas’ animators taught. She also started to save money so she could eventually apply for a masters program at a fine arts school. After five years, she was ready to finally apply but found that all the deadlines for the programs she wanted had passed. However, round three of business school was available at Harvard, and due to the pressures from her mother, she applied and got in. Before she completely gave up on animation, though, her boss at eBay told her to try out Hollywood and see what it would be like to work as an animator. So she quit her job and took on as many internships and jobs as she could out in L.A. She ended up landing positions as Zach Braff’s assistant and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s talent manager. From those positions, and during her time in Hollywood, she learned that everything is a business no matter what you do, and decided to start at Harvard. In between her time at school, she took an internship at Pixar and ended up working on Toy Story 3. She said she learned that animation was a mature industry full of mature businesses, so a lot of emphasis was on decreasing costs in order to increase margins. But Maureen wanted to create something new because she knew it would be hard to compete against Pixar or Disney without a lot of money or unfair distribution advantages. That’s when she decided to join forces with Zenga, because it was still entertainment, but it was also a pioneer in an entirely new industry focused on connecting the world through games. After six years with Zenga, she became VP of Games, and overlooked the Farmville franchise. Not able to keep her hands away from animation, though, she worked with art directors from Pixar on an a film called the Dam Keepers; which was nominated for an Oscar. She continued to find new ways to innovate the industry, which eventually led to her venture into virtual reality. She said the first time she put on a VR headset she hated it because of it’s low resolution and bad pixilation. It was when Zenga hacked into the headset with their games, that she was convinced that VR was the future of animation, because it allowed her to be transported into a fantasy world. She said it also made sense business-wise because it was a new industry, and no one had an advantage. Naturally an introvert, she didn’t want to be a COO, but there weren’t any companies in VR to join. But she knew she had to be a part of the VR industry, and began to pave her own way through it! Hear more of Baobab’s story, how she found the courage to pursue her dreams, and created her own system! In this episode you will… Know how to have confidence in pursuing your dream career Learn how to find the perfect co-founders Be able to work your network to help you start your business See how to educate men on the female experience in the work place Get over what society deems as attractive in women at work Figure out a way to come up with the perfect name for your company INSIGHTS “[Virtual reality] spoke to me creatively because the reason I love animation is it takes you to completely different worlds, and world’s that are only limited by the directors' imagination…and it makes you believe that the world is so real, you can reach out and touch it. And that’s also the definition of virtual reality.” – Maureen Fan “Animation makes me feel like I’m 5 years old again when I believed I could do anything. And for VR, if it takes you totally to that world, it brings out that 5 year-old in me even more, and makes me feel like I’m invincible. Creatively it was like magic, and I knew I needed to do it.” -Maureen Fan “It’s so great having co-founders, because starting a company is incredibly emotional and stressful. You have these moments [of] intense happiness, and incredible misery, and having the co-founders there, not only to share the load of work with you, but also there for you emotionally.” -Maureen Fan RESOURCES Baobab Studios Website Baobab Studios Facebook Baobab Studios Instagram Baobab Studios Twitter Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss without Losing your Humanity by Kim Scott
