"A community cat program does not just help cats. You think you're going in there to help cats and you turn out really having more impact on the people in that community." This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and 6 Degrees of Cats. In this insightful episode, host Stacy LeBaron welcomes back Elizabeth Finch, an impact-driven leader who has been transforming community cat programming since 2015. Elizabeth's journey from launching a robust community cat program serving over 4,000 cats annually in metro Atlanta to becoming an educator and consultant offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to create systematic change. Her experience reveals how effective community cat work extends far beyond individual rescue efforts to become a comprehensive approach that benefits both cats and the people who care about them. Elizabeth shares the strategic thinking behind successful community cat programs, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond "onesie-twosie" approaches to tackle entire colonies, neighborhoods, and zip codes systematically. The conversation explores how she and Stacy partnered to create the first-of-its-kind Community Cat Program Management Certification course at University of the Pacific, addressing the gap between skilled trappers and comprehensive program management. Elizabeth discusses the eight-module curriculum that covers everything from funding and marketing to legal roadblocks and public engagement—skills that most passionate trappers never learned but desperately need. The episode also touches on Elizabeth's creative outlets, including her book "Colony Tails: Lessons from the Alley," which captures the human side of community cat work through short stories that honor frontline caretakers. Whether you're running a small TNR group, working in municipal animal services, or considering starting a community cat program, this conversation provides both strategic insights and practical tools for professionalizing this critical work while maintaining its heart and compassion. Press play now for: Elizabeth's journey from individual cat rescue to systematic community cat programming Why community cat programs help people as much as cats in underserved communities The strategic approach to TNR: targeting whole colonies, neighborhoods, and zip codes rather than individual cats How the Community Cat Program Management Certification course fills the gap between trapping skills and program management Details on the eight-module curriculum covering funding, marketing, legal issues, data management, and public engagement The partnership between passionate educators with different strengths (methodical writer vs. dynamic speaker) Live weekly sessions, Q&A opportunities, and expert guest interviews from field veterans The Sue Black Memorial Scholarship honoring a dedicated community cat program manager TNR certification workshops and the movement toward professionalizing community cat work Elizabeth's book "Colony Tails: Lessons from the Alley" and upcoming series of standalone management guides Why effective TNR requires far more than "traps and tuna" to create lasting community impact Partnership opportunities for organizations wanting to support volunteer training Resources mentioned: University of the Pacific Community Cat Program Management Certification Course(https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/events/university-of-the-pacific-community-cats-program-management-certificate-program-853-372/) Community Cat Champions - Sue Black Memorial Scholarship (https://communitycatchampions.org/) Colony Tales: Lessons from the Alley on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Colony-Tails-Lessons-Elizabeth-Finch/dp/B0DGG2SMSS/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3ODXF70MNCC5C&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.tONPSO-TUDZMhENuCmEHoOVqaKfXgEoTcOhTEH0gq7XUpOH3wONtfcdWlwWfOAaP.7RgU5T0GsT_FpRvxTxxIHNJNrWPTrd6nhZ83TwFwc2Q&dib_tag=se&keywords=colony+tails&qid=1756150798&sprefix=colony+tails,aps,98&sr=8-1) Community Cats Podcast TNR Certification Workshops (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/events/) Community Cats Podcast Partnership Programs (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/) Contact Elizabeth Finch: elizabeth@communitycatspodcast.com Contact Stacy LeBaron: stacy@communitycatspodcast.com Additional certifications: Drop Trap Certification, Trappers Tips & Tricks, Colony Caretaking Tips & Tricks(https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/conferences-and-events/) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies623) Six Degrees of Cats (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/6-degrees-of-cats/id1669849217) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Talking Trash is a show to discuss movies that some people deem to be garbage, mediocre or just one that people never knew existed, we talk through the plot in spoiler fashion while asking "is this a bad movie?" And if not "what is the worst movie ever made?"It's September and we've started a two month battle between Dogs and Cats. August went to the dogs, and September is for the cats. To celebrate national cat month we are taking on 5 cat films. So this week we dive into our first cat film with a movie called "The Cat" about, what else? The princess of the stars trying to find 3 devices called the Octagon to kill an alien called "Star Killer" with the aid of an old man, a cat inhabited by an alien knight, and a novelist... yeah, theres no way you could have thought of that and theres nonway we can talk about it, but we try. A year ago, we lived the September of our dreams.Jaspa on the run, Joe's goal from the boundary, Motty's mark in the middle, Cal's goal to put us ahead, Cam Rayner sealing it on the left, and Hippy's Aker tribute in the big dance - they are all the stuff of legend, and memories each of us will treasure for the rest of our lives. Now, twelve months on, it's time to write some more folklore. This Friday night, the premiership defence gets underway, with an enormous qualifying final against Geelong making up the first part of the climb back to the summit. We preview the fourth match-up against the Cats in September in the last five years, and with them holding a 2-1 record, we're hoping to even the ledger. Also this week:-Dom celebrates Zac Bailey's All Australian selection (extensively)-Could Jordan Ridley get to Brisbane in the trade period? -Who is subbing in for Mike at the watch party? And much more!

From her first sparkle kit inspired by Karen Carpenter to a career that's taken her from rock arenas to Broadway pits, Dena shares a powerful story about perseverance, adaptability, and passion.Dena spent nearly two decades with the all-female rock band Antigone Rising, logging more than 260 shows a year, signing with Lava/Atlantic Records, and sharing bills with bands like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and The Bangles. Along the way, she learned the grind of life on the road, the frustration of being pigeonholed as “girl music,” and the discipline that comes from playing night after night. Those experiences became the foundation for her eventual move to Broadway. Her first Broadway chair came in Head Over Heels, the Go-Go's jukebox musical that featured an all-female band. From there, Dena's career expanded into multiple productions, including Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls, The Cher Show (as a sub), Magic Mike the Musical (Broadway Lab), and her current run in Little Shop of Horrors. She also subs on Hamilton, Six, and at the origial run of Beetlejuice. In our conversation, Dena opens up about the realities of the pit:* Why no two shows are ever the same and why you can never “phone it in”* The discipline it takes to stay fully present eight times a week* How playing in Antigone Rising prepared her for the demands of Broadway* What she looks for when hiring subs and why paying it forward matters* The role of Ableton, click tracks, and sound cues in modern Broadway drumming* Her full gear setup: Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, Promark sticks, and custom in-ears* Why she always keeps charts in front of her—even after memorizing the showDena also talks about the surreal moment of playing on stage with the Go-Go's, interviewing Gina Schock for Modern Drummer, and what it feels like to see the Head Over Heels Playbill now preserved in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a conversation filled with honesty, humor, and hard-won lessons for any drummer dreaming of breaking into Broadway—or simply learning how to thrive in the unpredictable world of live performance. For more about Dena: https://www.denatauriello.comClayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Charlie our guest recounts 6 months of his life at the age of 9 back in 1973-74. Around his house in Ayrshire his family lived alongside a female big black cat, seen active in fields and woods and at one stage she was lactating. Charlie regularly encountered the cat during spells when he escaped the ongoing stress at home. He describes its consistent behaviours, including its calls and its hunting. It took rabbits from his snares and he observed it resting in sun traps. This episode tells a remarkable story of a large black cat, most likely a female leopard, out in the wild before the 1976 Dangerous Wild Animals Act. Charlie considers why the cat tolerated him in particular, as well as his family members. Words of the week: gypsy warnings 1 September 2025

A Note from JamesWhat does it take to make a discovery that changes the world? Think about landing on the moon — a true moonshot. Along the way, countless technologies were invented that reshaped life back on Earth. My guest today, Astro Teller, has been part of that same kind of world-changing work. At X — Alphabet's Moonshot Factory — he's led projects that gave us self-driving cars, Google Brain, drone delivery, augmented reality with Google Glass, and much more. We even talk about quantum computing, drones that bring your groceries to your backyard, and the mindset it takes to believe in something that once sounded like science fiction.Astro and I first crossed paths when I visited Google X back in 2012 or 2013. From Waymo's self-driving cars to Wing's drones, from the birth of Google Brain to breakthroughs in quantum networking and modernizing electric grids, Astro explains the engineering mindset that drives innovation. This episode goes beyond technology — it's about how to think like a moonshot maker. You'll hear how X chooses projects, why systems engineering often matters more than pure science, and how to break down massive problems into solvable steps. What You'll LearnThe three elements that define a true moonshot at X.Why self-driving cars succeeded not because of new science, but because of paradigm-shifting systems engineering. How Google Brain kickstarted the modern AI revolution by betting on scale when neural nets were out of fashion. Why Wing's drone delivery service may soon feel as ordinary as rideshare apps. How Project Tapestry is mapping and optimizing the electric grid to cut connection times from years to days. The promise (and risks) of quantum networking, quantum sensing, and the looming “Q-Day” when current cryptography could break. Why empathy is crucial for workers displaced by new technologies.Timestamped Chapters[01:00] A Note from James[04:00] Inside Alphabet's Moonshot Factory (X)[06:00] Defining moonshots: problem, radical solution, breakthrough tech[08:00] Waymo and the hidden challenges of self-driving cars[13:00] Safety, comfort, and the “body language” of cars[17:00] Google Brain and the rebirth of neural networks[20:00] Cats, YouTube, and AI's first big proof point[23:00] Wing: drones delivering groceries like magic[29:00] Moonshot mindset vs. the Apollo mission[31:00] How X evaluates and selects moonshots[34:00] Breakthroughs behind Waymo and simulation at scale[39:00] What if every car was autonomous?[40:00] Project Tapestry: modernizing the electric grid[45:00] Mapping PJM and national-scale grids[46:00] Lessons from Google Glass: too early, or misframed?[48:00] The future of AR glasses and AI assistants[51:00] Why X left longevity research to Calico and Verily[52:00] Quantum computing, networking, and sensing explained[57:00] The coming “Q-Day” and what it means for security[59:00] AI, jobs, and the importance of empathy[61:00] Closing thoughts and Astro's Moonshot PodcastAdditional ResourcesThe Moonshot Podcast with Astro Teller (YouTube)X, the Moonshot FactoryWaymo (Self-Driving Cars)Wing (Drone Delivery)Google BrainProject Tapestry – Grid ModernizationPJM Interconnection (Eastern US Grid)Calico (Alphabet's Longevity Research)Verily Life SciencesSandbox AQ (Quantum & AI)Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer ScienceSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

"If you love cats, you should be concerned about trying to help bring those numbers down so animals don't suffer because this is why we do this. We don't want animals suffering, having unwanted litters of cats and having to have them suffer." This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and 6 Degrees of Cats. In this powerful episode, host Stacy LeBaron sits down with Cathy Bissell, founder of Bissell Pet Foundation, who has revolutionized animal welfare through innovative programs reaching over 6,000 shelters across 49 states. From her unexpected entry into animal welfare during Hurricane Katrina to creating the nation's largest funded adoption event, Cathy's journey demonstrates how strategic thinking and passionate commitment can create systemic change. Her foundation has impacted nearly one million pets since 2011, but it's her latest initiative that's truly disrupting the industry. Cathy shares the incredible success of her groundbreaking "Fix the Future" program, launched in 2023 to address the veterinary care access crisis. In just under 18 months, this free spay/neuter initiative has sterilized 138,000 animals across 27 states, with an astounding 86,963 of those being cats. Through a network of 385 high-volume, high-quality relief veterinarians, the program is tackling overpopulation at its source while keeping costs remarkably low at just $35 per surgery. Cathy discusses the challenges of scaling this model, the importance of treating every animal that comes through their doors, and why she believes this "disruptor program" is essential for breaking down cost barriers that prevent people from accessing veterinary care. Whether you're working in a small grassroots rescue or leading a major shelter, this episode provides invaluable insights into creating sustainable, scalable solutions that address root causes rather than just symptoms. Cathy's emphasis on collaboration, her honest discussion about learning from mistakes (including a powerful story about declawing), and her practical advice for getting started at any age will inspire listeners to think bigger about their impact and consider how they can contribute to solving the access to care crisis in their own communities. Press play now for: Cathy's unexpected journey from Hurricane Katrina volunteer to founding a major animal welfare foundation The evolution from disaster response to adoption events to addressing systemic access to care challenges Incredible statistics: 138,000 spay/neuter surgeries in 18 months with 86,963 cats across 27 states How the Fix the Future program operates with 385 relief veterinarians at just $35 per surgery The power of MASH-style clinics and why community cat advocates should consider creating their own Why Michigan serves as a prime example with 3,000 cats out of 4,000 total surgeries at their clinic The importance of spaying/neutering before adoption and addressing kittens under six months How veterinary school limitations (graduating with only 1-3 spay/neuter surgeries) impact private practice capacity Cathy's honest story about learning from the declawing controversy and how it changed her foundation's policies Practical advice for getting involved at any age and making a difference beyond just donating money The role of Empty the Shelters adoption events in supporting shelter operations nationwide Why every animal deserves vaccination and ear-tipping as part of comprehensive TNR programs Resources mentioned: Bissell Pet Foundation website (https://www.bissellpetfoundation.org/) Empty the Shelters adoption events (https://www.bissellpetfoundation.org/programs/empty-the-shelters/) Fix the Future spay/neuter initiative (https://www.bissellpetfoundation.org/programs/fix-the-future/) Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine (https://www.vetmed.msstate.edu/) MSU shelter medicine program details (https://www.vetmed.msstate.edu/about/points-of-pride) United Spay Alliance website (https://www.unitedspayalliance.org/) United Spay Alliance wet lab training programs (https://www.unitedspayalliance.org/hqhvsn-wet-labs/) BISSELL Pet Foundation grant information (https://www.bissellpetfoundation.org/grant-information/) Operation Fix the Future clinics (https://www.bissellpetfoundation.org/operation-fix-the-future/) BISSELL Pet Foundation Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/bissellpets/) Sponsor Links: Maddie's Fund (https://www.communitycatspodcast.com/maddies623) Six Degrees of Cats (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/6-degrees-of-cats/id1669849217) Follow & Review We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. The All Blacks were a flaming dumpster fire this week, and as loyal fans we are disgusted. Razor's backline looked like they'd just met in the carpark before kickoff, and Argentina gleefully ran riot in front of delirious Buenos Aires fans. Over in South Africa, the Wallabies gave the Boks a proper scare of potentially going back to back… until James O'Connor's boots decided they were made of Play-Doh. Grab a beer and enjoy. Thanks to Sports 4 Cats for the beers! Go check them out https://sports4cast.com/4casts/rugby4cast/
Talking Trash is a show to discuss movies that some people deem to be garbage, mediocre or just one that people never knew existed, we talk through the plot in spoiler fashion while asking "is this a bad movie?" And if not "what is the worst movie ever made?"It's August and we are starting a two month battle between Dogs and Cats. August goes to the dogs to celebrate national Dog month and dog day by watching 4 crazy dog flicks. So this week we dive into our fourth and last killer Dog film with a movie called "The Breed" about, what else? A pack of dogs. The prenise goes something like this: 5 friends get stuck on an island with wild hungry bio-enginered super dogs and soon they have to battle them to stay alive. Its every bit as silly as it sounds. So let's get this chat started. It's your Monday podcast on a Sunday as Spencer Kietzman joins us to catch up with all the KKHI listeners and talk a little football. It was a disaster for K-State as they lose the game, lose a player and lose the internet as the quarterback's dad and brother get in a fight on the streets of Dublin and it goes viral. Ouch. KU's new stadium was rocking almost as good as the team as the Hawks romp Fresno. The Chiefs look ready as the first teams dominate the Bears. Spencer preps for fatherhood and takes a shot at a couple sponsor reads on a fun father/son episode.
