June and Pepper: Early 70s LGBTQ+ Allyship

Advanced TV Herstory

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2024 27:05

In the last 10-20 years, attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people in America have shifted due to more positive visibility and evolving cultural norms. Cynthia takes a look at two moments from 1970s television that revealed glimpses of LGBTQ+ allyship—a talk show moment and a 1974 episode of Police Woman. In 1970, June Lockhart appeared on The Virginia Graham Show and stopped the hostess in her tracks, pushing back on stereotypes and tropes common for the time. And the story of how a 54-year-old clip is available for viewing is its own testament to advocacy. LGBTQ+ scholar and media documentarian Steven Capsuto's book, Alternate Channels, helped Cynthia connect the June Lockhart dot to an episode of Police Woman.  Capsuto's book is an essential work for every media, gender, and social justice scholar. He traces television and even radio's early depiction of mostly gay characters and the absence of lesbians. His book also details the LGBTQ+ community's organization and support from straight allies that fought against distorted and ugly depictions of gay and lesbian characters in television and film for more than 75 years. The overall trend in American society has been toward greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people and this is, to a significant degree, the result of advocates and allies pushing for more positive and diverse characterizations in popular culture. Television largely ignored lesbians until the 1970s and even then, the characters were bitter, violent, and unstable. With just a few sentences, June Lockhart, in real life, and Angie Dickinson, as Sgt. Pepper Anderson, showed viewers the power of LGBTQ+ allyship.  STEVEN CAPSUTO Website - http://alternatechannels.net/ Alternate Channels, 20th Anniversary Revised Edition (2020) by Steven Capsuto http://alternatechannels.net/book/ MENTIONS June Lockhart, Virginia Graham, Angie Dickinson, Rev. Tread Perilously's 450th podcast continues Ampersand Month with its first ever episode of Cagney & Lacey: "Ahead of the Game." Cagney & Lacey are called to the scene of a teenage basketball prodigy who dropped dead during a pick-up game. The cops all assume drug use, but his father insists he took no illicit substances. Suspicion moves to the basketball coach when it turns out the teen had steroids in his system. But all of this takes a back seat when Cagney's father gets drunk at the Emerald Ball and Lacey's house is broken into. Can she recover the candlestick her mother gave her? Erik and Justin cannot get over a special one-scene appearance by the great Brock Peters. Dan Lauria also makes drops in as a Queens-area cop. Stars Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly get high praise -- even if they take second fiddle in this episode to their loud and gruff lieutenant. Other notables include the actors who play the desk sergeant, Lacey's husband, and the suspect gym coach. Erik posits that the episode is low rated because nothing gets resolved while Justin praises that element of the script. 1980s scandals reappear and the pair once again wave the flag for The Shield as one of the best shows to ever appear on television.

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we solve mysteries with a kitty and then chill in a giant mansion with Madame. First, Detective shows were big in the early 80s, see Cagney & Lacey, Simon & Simon, Magnum P.I., Hill Street Blues, and others.  But what if one of them was a witch?  Tucker's Witch tried that.  In the end, CBS made it disappear. Then, it's time for Mike's annual Money in the Bank selection.  This year, he went with a comedy set around a puppet, her life, and her TV show.  Madame's Place was racy and had big guest stars.  But when you're going up against late night fare like Carson, it won't end well. This week on It Was a Thing on TV we've got a secret that's beyond belief. We plan to be here for a very long time.   First, Reg Grundy was on a hot streak in the mid-1980s with Sale of the Century and Scrabble.  (See what we did there?)  NBC took a chance on a third Grundy show, which was a blatant ripoff of The Price is Right with history.  After 16 weeks, 2 different formats, and 3 versions of the final round, this show, like its subject matter, became history.  But we did get John Davidson's first game show hosting gig.   Then, it's 1985 and ABC wants to capitalize on Cagney & Lacey and Hill Street Blues, which were big hits on other networks...but let's make them married!  MacGruder and Loud premiered after "The Big Game" in 1985, but barely made it to Spring 1985.   Finally, released back in Halloween, we make our third journey to the world of Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. Is one man actually being haunted by a meddling trick or treater who's pretending to be the grim reaper on Halloween night? Can a mysterious drifter help Roy from The Office find love with his wife? Is it possible that two people who are about to be married can turn out to be seperated at birth? These mysteries will be answered as we once again go Beyond Belief!   Follow us through all of our social media pages via our Linktree page at linktr.ee/itwasathingontv   And also now follow us on Hive Social under the handle @itwasathingontv    Timestamps 0:30 - Time Machine 43:39 - MacGruder and Loud 1:39:33 - Beyond Belief Live Show 3

Riggs & Murtaugh. Cagney & Lacey. Crockett & Tubbs. Is it time to add Dr. Challis and Ellie to that list? Nope, not at all. Tom Atkins is an absolute sex god in this non-classic, but he doesn't have enough magic to save this from dumpster fire status. Or does he? The Chumps weave through this forest of ridiculousness to pluck out the entertaining nuggets, as always, but this one's a struggle. PLUS: a new segment makes its debut!

The LoDown with Lois Robbins

Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins. On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress, Sharon Gless! Generations of fans know her from her iconic roles such as Christine Cagney (Cagney & Lacey), Rosie O'Neill (The Trials of Rosie O'Neill), Debbie Novotny (Queer As Folk) and Madeline Westen (Burn Notice), among many others.  Without giving too much away from her book, Apparently There Were Complaints, Sharon talks about some of the most memorable moments from her career. Even though it took her 7 years to write it, the juicy stories inside were well worth the wait.   Sharon also discusses the journey of her Cagney & Lacey character's alcoholism and how there were times her acting was a little too convincing for the media. She opens up about the realities of her personal struggles with alcoholism and how she's an even stronger person because of it.  Lois and Sharon also reminisce about the groundbreaking show, Queer As Folk. At a time when the LGBTQIA+ was scarcely represented, Sharon was so grateful to be part of a show that supported the gay and queer community. She never forgot all the fan letters thanking her for giving them the support they needed.  Sharon is a firecracker gal with an incredibly big heart. This episode is definitely one for the books!   Be sure to keep up with Sharon's adventures on:  Twitter - @sharongless  Instagram - @sharonglessreal Facebook - Official Sharon Gless   Have questions for Lois? This is Play It Forward. Real people. Real stories. The struggle to Play It Forward. Episode 360 with actress and now author Sharon Gless. "Apparently There Were Complaints" delves into Gless's remarkable career and explores her complicated family, struggles with alcoholism, and her fear of romantic commitment as well as her encounters with some of Hollywood's biggest names. Brutally honest and incredibly relatable, Gless puts it all out on the page in the same way she has lived-never with moderation. "I never intended to write a book, but on a sunny California afternoon after chatting with a CBS executive about some of my life stories, I walked out with a book deal," says Gless. "That's what happened. I went in for a TV show and came out having to write 320 pages of my own lines. I hope I don't regret this." A fifth-generation Californian, Gless knew from a young age that she wanted to be an actress. After some rocky teenage years that included her parents' divorce and some minor (and not-so-minor) rebellion, Gless landed a coveted spot as an exclusive contract player for Universal Studios. In 1982, she stepped into the role of New York Police Detective Christine Cagney for the series "Cagney & Lacey," which reached an audience of 30 million weekly viewers and garnered Gless two Emmy Awards. The show made history as the first hour-long drama to feature two women in the leading roles.

According to Russel Simmions, In his book "Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money + God" The inspiration for Def COmedey Jam was a club on Crenshaw Blvd in L.A. called the Comedy Act Theater. Robin Harris hosted performances there, and he already had a serious underground buzz, from House PArty and Do the Right Thing. At the same time, everywhere Russell traveled, the "Black Comedy" nights were hot, and Russel was always looking for stuff that was "hot" with his hip-hop customer base. 105. In 1989, he eventually hooked up with Hollywood power player Stan Lathan (Sanford & Son, Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, Remington Steele ,Cagney & Lacey, Frank's Place, Roc and the 1984 classic feature film Beat Street) and they began creating Def Comedy Jam. 106. The original run of Def Comedy Jam ran from July 1, 1992 to January 1, 1997. In the fall of 2006 it returned to HBO. Many comedians had their careers launched by the huge success of this series! 107. Robin Harris was going to be the original host, but he died in 1990. Eddie Murphy was a big supporter of Martin Lawrence to replace Harris. 108. The show caught major criticism for using excessive foul language and a “supposed” negative representation of African Americans. Bill Cosby and Sidney Potier were major critics. 109. Def Comedy Jam, went on to become the longest running HBO series ever, launched the careers of several A-List comedians today. 110. 1992 Alumni: 111. Tread Perilously's Failed Pilots month continues with a look at the ABC television pilot for Tagteam. Pro wrestlers Rowdy Roddy Pipper and Jesse "The Body" Ventura star as thinly fictionalized versions of themselves ousted from the wrestling circuit and train as cops in the LAPD. Their training officer becomes their captain, their "bully" a black partner of sorts, and their first case may prove you sometimes need cops who can bodyslam crooks. But will their skills help them prevent special guest star Jennifer Runyon from getting killed before she can testify to a mob hit? Also, will the show attempt to make her a love interest for Roddy? Erik and Justin decline to attempt Jesse Ventura impressions, so Erik compensates by trotting out his Gene Simmons, Tommy Wiseau, Steven Segal and Ace Frehly. Justin admits to not being a big wrestling fan even as he extols the virtues of Roddy's on-screen charisma. Robin Curtis becomes the pair's favorite Savvik and Jennifer Runyon receives "show favorite" status. Erik tries to determine San Diego's prime cultural artifact and his wrestling persona. Paddy's Pub from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia makes a special cameo and Justin stumbles into a version of Cagney & Lacey starring Robin Curtis and Shannon Tweed.

He has been obsessed with television since he was five, and considers himself a student as well as a participant in the medium. He came to television writing through advertising, as a writer-producer, Clio winner, and creative trouble shooter at several New York agencies. His decades of experience in the industry have included both drama and comedies, including such hits as Barney Miller, Hill Street Blues, Newhart, and Cagney & Lacey. Pilots he has written that have gone to series have included Friday the 13th: The Series, The Odyssey, and Relic Hunter. The more he studies the work of those he admires most, the one thing that becomes apparent is they either didn't know all the rules, or they ignored them. It's their originality, their uniqueness, that have made their work such a tremendous success. L.A. Law (1986-94) lived a glamorous, full life. The series pilot, written by Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues) and Terry Louise Fisher (writer/producer of Cagney & Lacey), when viewed today is a time capsule of office life that reveals sexism, racism, and generational approaches to power. Full of quality TV promise, L.A. Law launched with a bang. Why isn't it now celebrated for its transformational prowess? We cover that, too, and applaud Alfre Woodard's epic performance, which occurred early in her career.

For over twenty years the Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation has raised millions of dollars by producing Broadway quality entertainment events and galas to advance HIV treatments and support AIDS services until there is a cure. Since 2015 REAF has expanded its fundraising focus to the Bay Area’s growing demand for two new areas by providing food for the needy and programs that support homeless, disadvantaged and disenfranchised youth. We talked to Sharon about this tremendous organization and as a fierce ally her spin on our LGBTQ issues. Sharon Gless has entertained TV viewers worldwide as the iconic characters she has brought to life over the last five decades. However it was her breakout role on the CBS hit TV series Cagney and Lacey that won our hearts as over 30 million viewers each week watched Gless as NYPD detective Christine Cagney in the first hour-long drama to feature two females in the leading roles that ran for six Emmy-winning seasons from 1982 until 1988. Then another generation of viewers fell in love with Sharon’s portrayal of Debbie Novotny the outspoken devoted mom of a gay son and confidant and loyal supporter to his gay friends for all five seasons of Showtime’s daring smash series Queer As Folk. We also talked to Gless about the possibility of a Queer As Folk reunion. The Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation was founded by the late Barbara Richmond and Peggy Ermet in memory of their sons John Richmond and Doug Ermet who both lost their lives to AIDS. In 1995 the two women decided not to get mad but get even when they launched a musical AIDS benefit to honor their sons by raising funds for AIDS service organizations. "Help Is On The Way 25" is Northern California's largest annual benefit concert benefiting HIV/AIDS and hunger programs. It's an elegant evening of wonderful music, delicious food and beverage tastings and most of all fun.For More Info & Tix: reaf-sf.org LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES
