Brent & Johnny welcome hit songwriter, Scott Lindsey, to The Challenge. Scott was signed with Sony Music subsidiary, Slugfest Records, back in 2008, where he released a Top-40 radio single, "You Only Call Me When You're Drunk," and he toured with Jason Aldean and Chris Young to support that single. He was also 1/3 of the amazing but short-lived trio The Nashvillians. Since then, Scott's had a great run of cuts by Blackstone Cherry, The Bellamy Brothers, and major syncs with FOX's Monarch, and Amazon Prime's Yellowstone (a song he wrote with Kevin Costner). Together, the three of them cook up 5-6 different conceptual angles for writing a song titled "Crossroads and Crosses," sent in by CLIMBer, Martin Vipond. The C.L.I.M.B. Show is dedicated to helping singers, songwriters, indie artists and industry pros "Create Leverage In The Music Business." We want you to win! Welcome to the place where we get to let our geek flags fly and talk about all things geek. Basically a fuzzy guide to life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff. This level of the podcast is a wayback brought to you by a great comic book monster conversation and the realization that this gem fromSeptember 24, 2017 never transitioned to the current batch of episodes. Let's activate the wayback and head to the very first CBM Defenders episode ever. A younger podcast and one hell yeah example of a good time. Enjoy! In blackest day... some comic book movies seem indefensible. But who is out there to try and make light of even the worst comic book movies. Who defends even them? Well constant listener, that's where Blue and I decided it was high time someone heroically tried to do just that. This regular episode of life, the universe, and everything but mostly geek stuff marks the inaugural issue of Blue and Wookiee, The (CBM) Defenders. We start our journey with a super-powered defense of Spawn (1997). Basically the good, the bad, and the ugly about the film where we finish with some positivity and why the movie might be worth watching as a geek and/or comic book movie enthusiast. Not an easy feat but a lot of fun to do. Keep an eye out for bonusodes in the future with this concept in mind. Just because we wanted to flesh out the episode some, we also briefly chatted about the death of comic book legend Len Wein, the inspiration for the planet in Avatar, a brief discussion of Luke Skywalker going dark, the awesome Bladerunner 2049 shorts, and then jokes about Daredevil singing with his feet.Congrats on completing Wayback #9! Episode 79 - Murdock and Marvel: 2010 Part 2 2010 is an odd year in a lot of ways.  It was quiet, but not in a “before the storm” way.  More in a “putt your head down and get to work” sense.  Great comics were made, and big things were happening mostly under the surface. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2010.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #502-512, Shadowland #1-5, Shadowland After the Fall #1, Daredevil: Cage Match #1, Daredevil Black & White #1, New Avengers #59-60, New Avengers Annual #3, What If? Secret Invasion #1, Avengers: The Initiative #32, Black Widow: Deadly Origin #3-4, Siege #4, World War Hulks: Hulked-Out Heroes #2, X-Factor #204, Sentry: Fallen Sun #1, New Avengers #1, Atlas #4, Shadowland Bullseye #1, Thanos Imperative #3, Ultimate Avengers #13-15, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #6, Shadowland Elektra #1, Shadowland Power Man #2, Shadowland Spider-Man #1 and Strange Tales graphic novel.  Writing: Andy Diggle (#502-504, 509-512), Diggle and Antony Johnson (#505-508)  Pencils: Roberto De La Torre (#502, 504, 508-509, 511), De La Torre and Marco Checchetto (#503), Checchetto (#505-507, 510, 512)  Inks: Roberto De La Torre (#502, 504, 508-509, 511), De La Torre and Marco Checchetto (#503), Checchetto (#505-507, 510, 512)  The year begins the story “The Devil's Hand” in which Daredevil, White Tiger and Black Tarantula patrolling New York and taking on criminals and corrupt cops with the help of the Hand. Meanwhile, Foggy and Becky win a case against some corrupt cops only to have the judge throw out the verdict which outrages Foggy, and he gets arrested for contempt of court and loses his law license.   Daredevil orders the construction of Shadowland – a Japanese Style fortress to be constructed on the site of the building explosion caused by Bullseye that killed 107 protesters in the The List at the end of 2009. It is to be the headquarters of the Hand in NYC.   Tensions escalate as Kingpin sends Lady Bullseye to infiltrate and assassinate both police officers and H.A.M.M.E.R. agents to cause chaos and a reaction. Which it does as Norman Osborn responds by deploying a full H.A.M.M.E.R. unit to Hell's Kitchen, which causes Daredevil to launch a declaration of war against the police, triggering a full-scale battle. At the end of The Devil's Hand, Matt travels to Japan to deal with important matters involving the Hand, so he leaves Black Tarantula in charge of the city and takes White Tiger with him.  Next in story “Left Hand Path” we see Matt in Japan hoping to unite the other leaders of the Hand. However, Bakuto, the Daimyo of South America, causes trouble. The other leaders seem to be conspiring against him. Despite their differences, Matt saves Bakuto from an attack and we learn Snakeroot has co-opted White Tiger to aid in the very intricate plans for Murdock and Shadowland back in New York City.   We return back to New York and the start of Shadowland, the big crossover event that goes into the Hand's plans for New York and Murdock ultimately, falling prey to them. This story was too big for just the Daredevil title and spawned its own limited series that needed to be read to understand what was going on in the Daredevil title. Those books along with a wrap up book entitled After the Fall while be our spotlight for this week. Buckle up everyone, you're in for a ride...  This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #508 September 2010 “Shadowland Part 1” through Daredevil #512 February 2011 “Shadowland Final Issue” plus Shadowland #1 September 2010 “Shadowland Part 1 of 5” through Shadowland #5 January 2011 “Shadowland Part 5” and Shadowland After the Fall #1 February 2011. Conversation with director Kent Lloyd on the making of the film. http://uvselfdefense.com/stunts https://www.instagram.com/spearheadstunts Director Statement Waterlogged is meant to be an auditory experience. I was inspired by all of my live dance music players from college and season 2 of Daredevil to help the audience experience what our hero goes through. This piece was a giant collaboration from my stunts class. Monica, Rayla and Tennyson did most of the heavy lifting in terms of choreography and costume design. But they asked me to help stunt coordinate and direct and help write the script since the action was developed without any specific dialogue at all. It's just Kevin and Lauren again this week and they are discussing Splitsville, Highest 2 Lowest, Am I OK?, Daredevil: Born Again, and Emma & Bruce That's right, Andrew has shunned all of us again. It hurts, but we'll move on. He'll be back and we all know it. After getting over our searing sting of rejection, Lauren kicks off the show by talking about the new film, Splitsville, starring Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, and some other people. That sounds a little dismissive, but the overall review is that the film isn't anything too special. It's a comedy-ish, but it opens in a very dark place. Our primary couple decides to enter into an open relationship to save their marriage, and, as you might imagine, it's less than successful. It sounds like this movie leans more into the odd humor than the straightforward and might be worth a viewing, but many reviews label it as somehow both chaotic and boring at the same time, so watch at your own risk. After that, Kevin joins his field guide, Spike Lee, on a tour of New York in Highest 2 Lowest, starring Denzel Washington. It's a remake of the Akira Kurosawa classic, High and Low. While the review is solid, it really does feel like an advertisement for New York about 40% of the time, and the first half of the film feels a little slow, while the second half flies by. It does end strong, but leaves a few questions in Kevin's mind that make it a little off from some of Lee and Washington's better works, but it's definitely worth a watch. Next up, Lauren continues to feed her Dakota Johnson addiction with a film from 2022, Am I OK? Directed by the great comedian Tig Notaro, this is the story of a woman who discovers a little late in life that she is gay. The film documents how that affects her, her relationships with friends, and what it means for her relationships going forward. It's certainly more heartfelt than the previous Johnson film Lauren watched and is one of her better films, so check it out if you have the chance. Coming off that high of a couple of really solid films, Kevin veers off the road into what might be a hot take. He and his family recently finished the Netflix Daredevil series and began Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. While the show has fared well critically, Kevin is of the opinion that the original Netflix series is the better of the two. And it's not close. The new series leans too much into the special effects and loses a lot of the grit and grime that made the original such a success. That said, it is in no way a bad series, so if you like the MCU, definitely give it a go! Lauren closes out the show on top with a review of the Diane Sawyer interview with Emma Heming Willis about her relationship with Bruce Willis and the complexities they face with his dementia diagnosis. It's not the happiest of topics, but it's a very good interview and leads to some interesting discussion between Kevin and Lauren. Even if you skip this part of the podcast, the interview itself is definitely worth spending your time on. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let us know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Mr. Honest is back in Hell's Kitchen. This lean, no-filler breakdown of Daredevil Season 1 hits the big beats that made Marvel's street-level corner legendary: the confession booth thesis, the Episode 2 hallway fight, Fisk's brutal rise (and Vanessa's influence), Foggy's heartbreak, Karen's line in the sand, and the red-suit coronation. Along the way, Eric connects the dots to Born Again—without spoilers—and explains why Marvel Maniac is shifting to season deep-dives for quality over quantity. If you're binging the Netflix era for the first time or jumping in from Born Again, this recap will refresh the moments that matter and why they still hit. Plus: programming notes, future coverage teases, and a quick plug for Magic Muggle (Saturdays at 10 AM). Episode 77 - Murdock and Marvel: 2009 Part 2 2009 was a tough year for comics, in that sales declined and a number of stores (nearly 50% in some areas) closed their doors.  Closings of Waldenbooks and other book outlets also made getting product into customers' hands difficult.  We also saw cover prices rise, even as the recession continued to impact fans ability to spend. This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2009.   The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #113-119, 500-501, Daredevil Noir #1-4, Dark Reign: The List – Daredevil #1, New Avengers #47, Secret Invasion #8, Secret Invasion: Front Line #5, Age of Sentry #4 and 6, Fantastic Four #562 and 569, Might Avengers #20, What If? Newer Fantastic Four #1, What If? Secret Wars #1, New Warriors #20, Amazing Spider-Man #587 and 600, Marvels: Eye of the Camera #2 and 4, Ultimate Spider-Man #132, Astonishing Tales #3-5, Dark Reign: Fantastic Four #2-3, Deadpool: Suicide Kings #3-5, Exiles #6, Strange Tales #2 and Marvel 70th Anniversary Collection.  Writing: Ed Brubaker (#113-119, 500), Andy Diggle (#501) Pencils: Michael Lark (#113-114, 117-119), Lark, Tony Zonjic and Gaudiano (#115), David Aja (#116), Lark and Gaudiano (#500), Roberto De La Torre (#501) Inks: Stefano Gaudiano (#113-114, 116-119), Matt Hollingsworth (#115), Klaus Janson, Chris Samnee and Paul Azaceta (#500), Roberto De La Torre (#501) 2009 begins with the final three parts of the Lady Bullseye storyline we talked about to finish up 2008. In that we Daredevil, Black Tarantula and White Tiger along with Master Izo trying to take down the Hand once and for all – but the Hand are trying to recruit Daredevil to be their leader. The story ends with Lord Hirochi, Lady Bullseye, Black Tarantula, and White Tiger board a plane to Spain, where Lady Bullseye says they will pursue Plan B.  In March, we get the return of another old foe – Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin himself in an aptly titled story called Return of the King. In part one of the story, we see Fisk in Spain where he befriends and falls in love with a woman, Marta, and her kids – only to see Lady Bullseye and the Hand killing them causing him to revert back to his old ways.  Kingpin returns to New York and announces his return and his plans to deal with Daredevil. That plan turns out to be working with Daredevil to take down the Hand. Meanwhile, Foggy is upset that Matt constant absence from the firm confronts him and ultimately fires him.  Daredevil tries to locate Master Izo without success and begins to doubt his alliance with Kingpin, suspecting that Fisk is using the Hand and the Owl to wipe out his rivals. Fisk, still haunted by visions of Vanessa, meets with the Owl and gives him Lady Bullseye's next target – Foggy Nelson.  The conclusion of this story – is a renumbered issue 500 of Daredevil and the conclusion of Ed Brubaker on Daredevil – will be our spotlight story for this week.   In Dark Reign: The List – Daredevil #1 we see Bullseye (now operating under the Hawkeye identity) go after Daredevil at the behest of Norman Osborn. Daredevil pursues him but falls into a trap: Bullseye lures him into a building full of protestors and then blows it up. The blast kills 107 people, leaving Matt devastated and furious—determined to take action.  Following that we get the start of a new story from new creative team - Andy Diggle and Roberto De La Torre entitled The Devil's Hand. In it, we see Matt as leader of the Hand. Since most of this story takes place in 2010 – we'll save talking about it more until our 2010 discussion. CLIMBers, I keep hearing artists talk about choosing this streaming platform over that streaming platform because it "pays" better. There is no set streaming rate for any streaming service. What the hell does that mean? Today, we're going to dive into why Spotify pays the least per stream, but you'd better be on there. The C.L.I.M.B. Show is dedicated to helping singers, songwriters, indie artists and industry pros "Create Leverage In The Music Business." We want you to win! About the hosts: Brent Baxter is an award-winning hit songwriter with cuts by Alan Jackson (“Monday Morning Church”), Randy Travis, Lady A, Joe Nichols, Ray Stevens, Gord Bamford and more.  He helps songwriters turn pro by helping them WRITE like a pro, DO BUSINESS like a pro and CONNECT to the pros.  You can find Brent at SongwritingPro.com/Baxter and  SongwritingPro.com. Can You Be Bored to Death? & Why Thrill Seekers Seek Thrills

What if you were convinced you got a good night's sleep even if you didn't? It turns out what you believe can actually determine if you do or don't feel tired the next day. How can this possibly be true? This episode starts with an explanation which could be very useful one day when you didn't sleep well. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24417326/ Many times in your life you have felt totally bored. What exactly is boredom? Is it a feeling or maybe it is a lack of a feeling? Does feeling bored ever serve a purpose? Then there is that phrase, “I'm bored to death.” Can that actually happen – death by boredom? Here for a fascinating discussion on the topic of boredom is psychologist James Danckert, author of the book, Out of My Skull: The Psychology of Boredom (https://amzn.to/3ePmnsq). On one end of the scale are thrill seekers and daredevils who jump out of airplanes or climb dangerous mountains. On the other end of the scale are people who would rather stay home and read a book by the fire. What is the difference? What cause thrill seekers to do what they do? What is it they gain from those experiences? That is what Ken Carter is here to reveal. Ken is a board-certified clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at Oxford College of Emory University and author of the book Buzz!: Inside the Minds of Thrill-Seekers, Daredevils, and Adrenaline Junkies (https://amzn.to/35FIwCn) One day your car's check engine light will come on. It's a pretty vague warning that doesn't tell you much. What could it be? Sometimes it's nothing. In fact, often it is nothing. Listen as I reveal one of the most likely reasons it comes on and the simple fix. Source: Phil Edmonston author of The Lemon-Aid Car Guide (https://amzn.to/33wtJaC) Learn more about your ad choices.
