Edge of the Web - An SEO Podcast for Today's Digital Marketer
Curious where your website visitors are really clicking—or rage-clicking? On this week's EDGE of the Web, SEO expert Celeste Gonzalez returns to break down how heatmaps and session recordings are transforming the way we analyze user behavior, optimize pages, and (hopefully) keep our clients engaged. We dig into practical tips for choosing the right pages to monitor, interpreting the sometimes confusing world of “dead clicks” versus “rage clicks,” and why your mobile hero image might be killing conversions. A/B testing? Internal linking tests for those blog post traffic hogs? On a side note: if you haven't looked at Microsoft Clarity (a freebie, folks), you're missing out. Celeste spills why it's her go-to and what to watch for as AI-powered tools like Copilot throw their hot takes into the mix. And we concur! Always be optimizing! Whether you're an SEO wrangling for bigger budgets or a marketer tired of guessing, Celeste's advice on collaboration, continuous testing, and the necessity of structured analysis is worth its weight in user insights. Celeste Gonzalez, Director of Rue Labs at Rickety Roo, joins EDGE to explore how heat maps and user behavior tracking are transforming SEO strategy. She walks through Microsoft Clarity's suite of tools—including tap, scroll, attention, and area heat maps—and explains how they reveal real user interactions beyond what traditional metrics can offer. From understanding time-on-page to visualizing content engagement, Celeste shows how these tools help SEOs optimize design, layout, and messaging. She highlights the growing need to “earn the scroll,” not just the click, especially as attention spans shrink and SERPs shift. Celeste also addresses common missteps, like overreacting to limited data or drawing conclusions in isolation. She encourages combining heat map data with tools like GA4 and leaning into collaboration with UX and marketing teams. With empathy and clear visual insights, SEOs can better advocate for redesigns, justify strategic shifts, and ensure content supports the entire user journey. This episode offers a practical, data-driven case for elevating UX within modern SEO workflows. In this episode, we dive into Chapter 4 of the ebook, exploring how to create a Heatmap of Friction Points. This visual tool helps identify when and where meltdowns are likely to occur, enabling you to address potential triggers and create smoother transitions throughout the day. Key Points: Creating Your Own Heatmap: Draw a timeline: Outline your typical day. Mark meltdown times: Use red dots for frequent meltdowns. Stressful periods: Mark these with orange dots. Calm periods: Use green dots to indicate easy times. Identifying Patterns: Look for clusters of red/orange dots. Identify challenging times and activities that lead to stress. Real-Life Example: Sarah's Story: Sarah noticed her son had meltdowns around 4 PM. She adjusted her routine by preparing dinner earlier, setting up a quiet activity for her son, and involving him in simple food prep tasks. These changes turned a red spot on her Heatmap into a green one. Using Your Heatmap: Identify Patterns: Spot clusters of stress points. Consider Factors: Think about hunger, fatigue, or overstimulation. Brainstorm Solutions: Adjust schedules, prepare in advance, create routines, and introduce calming activities. Implement Gradually: Focus on one or two friction points at a time. Reassess Regularly: Review and update your Heatmap every few weeks. Exercise: Pause the podcast to jot down one red spot on your Heatmap and three strategies to address it. Common Questions: Overwhelming Red Spots: Focus on the most challenging times first. Unpredictable Days: Look for patterns in activities rather than specific times. Involving Your Child: Create a Heatmap together or use stickers for younger children. Partner Disagreements: Create individual Heatmaps and compare notes. Seeing Improvements: Consistent effort should show changes within weeks, though progress may not always be linear. Final Thoughts: The Heatmap aims to reduce unnecessary stress, not eliminate all challenges. Frustration is a normal part of child development. Homework: Create your own Heatmap, track your routine, and focus on one friction point. Thanks for listening! Don't forget to subscribe and leave a review if you found this episode helpful.

Helllllo stars. Welcome back to the pod. I'm back after a holiday respite! Today I'm tuning in from a COVID quarantine with my housemates Cesar Pinzon and Ian Bourn. We've been isolated, stars, so you'll note that we were feeling goofy. In this Yuletide episode, you'll hear us play a Christmas "who am I" game, reflect on Christmas memories--both light and dark--and finish the episode with a reading of the classic Christmas tale "The Gift of the Magi". Throughout the episode, you'll hear the song Home Alone by Heatmaps, which does wonders to parallel the conflicted emotions we all share about the holidays. Jon MacDonald is President and Founder of The Good, a conversion agency that believes in removing bad online experiences so that only "the good" remains. Jon and his agency prefers to work with e-commerce websites with at least 15,000 visitors per month. Their job is to remove barriers that web browsers experience. They come to a website with a specific paid or need, and they need to find the solution they're looking for in order to convert. He installs simple tools (on any platform) to track cursor movements, clicks and scrolls to see where users navigate and uncover sales leaks. He combines that information with real live user testing to back it up, and then runs multivariate tests to improve conversions. In this episode I just want to point you in the direction of an awesome free resource. I've decided that every time I stumble across some incredible content that is a cut above the rest then I'm going to share it with you and point you in the direction where you can go consume it for yourself. If you have found or have written some incredible content that you think should be featured then please feel free to reach out to me with your suggestions. So today's incredible free resource is by Kim Roach of Buzzblogger.com. Kim consistently produces top content and this week she published her list of "The Top 60 WordPress Plugins of 2014". I highly recommend you go check it out over at buzzblogger.com/top-wordpress-plugins It includes a few of the usual suspects as well a bunch of less well known but very cool plugins. The list included a few of my personal favourites which I frequently recommend... Wordpress SEO by Yoast - The best plug-in for doing the on-page SEO of your posts. Disqus - The best commenting plugin that integrates with the commenters social media accounts. Leadpages - The easiest way to create opt-in pages and collect leads BluBrry PowerPress - The best tool for hosting your podcast within a blog post. (If your listening to this podcast on my blog then your using this plugin right now!) The list also had many plugins which I wasn't aware of. Some that really caught my eye that I want to try out include... BackWPup - This tool will back up your site on a regular basis so that you can restore any previous version if you ever needed to. In the past I've used backup buddy for this but that tool isn't free so I'm going to compare the two and see how this compares. W3 Total Cache - Quite simply this plugin helps your site to load up quicker. This is important for your website visitors to have a good experience when they come to your site. WP Smush It - This plugin reduces the file size of your images without affecting how they look and that helps for site load time as well. I'll definitely be installing that one. One Press Social Locker - This allows you to lock content on your site and unlock it in return for a facebook share or retweet or plus one. I've used tools like this before but not a free one and this will come in handy for several of my sites. Welcome Gate - A plugin by LeadBrite who brought us LeadPages and LeadPlayer that allows you to put a welcome gate pop-up on the home page of your website. Although I previously knew of this plugin, they used to charge for it and I had not purchased it. However they are now giving it away free of charge so grab it while you still can. Google Analytics for Wordpress - This will be a game changer for me. I don't use my Google analytics nearly enough, the main reason being that I rarely think to go login and check things. I do it but not as often as I should. This plugin brings that data right into the Wordpress dashboard of your site and personally I login to this often, so that's very convenient for me. Hotspots Analytics - This is an analytics and heatmapping tool for WordPress. Heatmaps can be very useful in determining how visitors use your site but tools I've used in the past like clicktale and crazyegg can have a significant price tag depending on the complexity of your monthly plan. Seeing as this tool is free, I'll reserve judgement of how good it will prove to be until after I've tried it for myself. However, a free heatmapping tool could prove to be very useful for those on a budget. WP Affiliate Surge - This is a very affordable tool which let's the owners of affiliate programs add a promotional tools page where your affiliates can get their links, banners, email swipes and other things to help them make more sales of your products. Broken Link Checker - This does exactly what it says on the tin. It will check your site for broken links and notify you of any new ones, which is great because manually checking every single link on your site to make sure that the link is still good would be extremely tedious to say the least. Theme Test Drive - This plugin allows you to test out a different wordpress theme on your site in a way that doesn't affect what your visitors currently see. Meaning you can test a new theme out and perfect it before making the changes go live on your site. I'm in the process of doing this right now, so this is very timely for me. That's what caught my eye but my needs and your needs may be different so I really recommend you do go to buzzblogger.com/top-wordpress-plugins to view the entire list
