Latin America shifts right in 2025 and aligns with Trump Latin America's political shift toward conservative governments was reinforced this week when Chileans elected far-right politician Jose Antonio Kast for the 2026-2030 term. It was the largest vote total ever recorded in a presidential election there. Chile's result strengthened a regional trend that is reshaping domestic political balances and points to closer political and economic alignment with the United States. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/latin-america-shifts-2025-aligns-130403259.html What's behind South America's shift to the right?

Join Jim and Greg for the Tuesday 3 Martini Lunch, as they serve up all good martinis and discuss the FBI thwarting a major terrorist plot, another conservative elected president in South America, and growing outrage in Minnesota over massive welfare fraud and Gov. Tim Walz's handling of the scandal.First, they applaud the FBI for thwarting a chilling plot by the Turtle Island Liberation Front to carry out a coordinated bombing campaign across Los Angeles beginning on New Year's Eve. Authorities describe the group as pro-Palestine, anti-government, and anti-capitalist. Jim and Greg are grateful for the arrests and are reminded that evil people love to plan horrible things around the holidays.Next, they celebrate the election of conservative Jose Antonio Kast as the next president of Chile. While the media absurdly label him as "far-right," Kast is a conservative Catholic who wants to crack down on crime and secure the border. He's also called a neo-liberal on economics, which means he's for smaller government, free markets, and deregulation. Seems like a leader the U.S. might be able to work with. Finally, they discuss new polling from Minnesota showing deep voter frustration with the state's sprawling welfare fraud scandal. Nearly 80 percent of residents say it is a major problem or the worst problem facing the state, while just 14 percent believe Gov. Tim Walz has handled it well. Jim questions whether Minnesota Democrats will abandon Walz in 2026 or continue standing by him despite the growing scandal. Please visit our great sponsors:Try Quo for free at https://Quo.com/3ML and keep your existing number—Quo means no missed calls, no missed customers.Give your liver the support it deserves with Dose Daily. He defeated the candidate of the left-wing governing coalition by over 15 percentage points on Sunday, setting the stage for the country's most right-wing government in 35 years of democracy. According to electoral results with over 95% of the vote counted, Kast won more than 58% of the vote.

How much is historical revisionism in South America's southern cone responsible for a rise in the far-right in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay? What does this mean for the largely prevailing consensus on the brutality and the indefensible and egregious human rights violations perpetrated by the dictatorships in the 1970s and 1980s? Can we point to an amnesia of these periods which has contributed to a democratic backsliding in the region? Where do President Javier Milei, former president Jair Bolsonaro, Chilean politician Jose Antonio Kast, and others, fit into this? In this episode of the LatinNews podcast we look at this theme and hear from Scott Mainwaring, the Eugene P. and Helen Conley Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame who specialises in political parties, democratic and authoritarian regimes and political institutions in Latin America.

This week's episode looks back at the results from Chile's presidential election and assesses one of the bigger issues of 2021 in climate change. Gabriel Boric has pulled off a big left-wing victory against Jose Antonio Kast in the second round of the Chilean presidential election, but does the divided Congress mean that he will face a tricky road in passing his desired legislative programme? Why did the left-wing energy of the Constitutional Convention elections reappear in this second round after failing to materialise in the first? Was the increased turnout a big reason for the Boric victory? The episode also takes a deeper dive into one of the biggest political themes of 2021 – climate change. In the year of COP26 in Glasgow, climate change and policies to combat it has been a theme at the ballot box and on political campaigns, but was it a clincher at the ballot box? Sam and Chern look at whether 2021 was a big year for climate politics or whether it was significantly less important than other issues like the pandemic and the economy. Was COP26 a success? Will climate activists be happy with climate consciousness, or is there still more political work to do? And is climate destined to be a larger issue in 2022 and beyond? All these questions and more answered in this week's episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ballot-to-talk-about/message
Suzi talks to Pablo Abufom in Chile about Gabriel Boric's impressive landslide victory in the second round of Chile's Presidential election held December 19. Boric, a 35 year old former student leader from the Apruebo Dignidad (I Approve Dignity) coalition, decisively defeated the first round winner, Jose Antonio Kast, the ultra-right admirer of Pinochet's dictatorship whose campaign stoked fear and demonized migrants as narco-trafficking terrorists, opposed women's rights, same sex marriage and promised repression. Pablo Abufom Silva discusses Boric's politics and the immense challenges he faces in making the changes his campaign has promised in a divided country and a divided parliament, reeling from an economic downturn exacerbated by the pandemic. Boric is a moderate leftist representative of the anti-neoliberal popular movement that exploded on the streets in October 2019 and won the right to scrap Pinochet's constitution and elect constituents to draft a new one. The structural reforms Boric championed include tax reform, de-privatizing pensions, taking on police brutality and human rights violations, urgent action on climate change, fighting for gender equity, the empowerment of women and indigenous peoples. Hundreds of thousands flocked to the streets to celebrate Boric's victory as their own. Pablo describes the relief and joy of their triumph: they defeated Pinochetism and can now continue the cycle of transformations that prompted the popular revolt of October 2019. Leftist Gabriel Boric was elected president of Chile on Sunday by a larger-than-expected margin, giving him a mandate to push for higher taxes, greener industries and greater equality after a contest focused on discontent over an investor-friendly economy that has left many behind. The former student protest leader won 56% of the vote, beating conservative rival Jose Antonio Kast's 44%. The victory is likely to spook markets that fear interventionist policies.

This week's episode looks at the major parties and players who took part in the first round of the Chilean presidential election last week and their legislative elections. Gabriel Boric and Jose Antonio Kast will be going head to head in December in the presidential run-off, as the two traditional left and right blocs, including the party of incumbent President Sebastian Pinera, fall behind and fail to make the final two – this week's discussion assesses the changing political landscape in Chile and what the run-off might look like in a month's time. As the campaign recommences ahead of the presidential second round, Sam and Chern take a look at the political scene in Chile and why the population may have turned to the far-right and far-left in the search for solutions to their economic and political problems. Why did the New Social Pact fail to capitalise on Pinera and the governing coalition's litany of problems? What provoked the rise of Kast and the far-right so suddenly throughout this campaign? Is Garbiel Boric or Jose Antonio Kast better positioned to pick up the voters of the more moderate groupings in the second round? What has been the impact of the Pinochet legacy on this campaign? All these questions and more answered in this week's podcast. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ballot-to-talk-about/message
