"Why Thieves and Crooks Now Rule the World and How to Take It Back"
Some people call it "investor citizenship" while others label it a "passport for sale" scheme. Either way, the last few decades have seen the global citizenship industry grow and evolve in ways that both reflect and impact issues around national sovereignty, tax regimes, international business, and global inequities.David Priess chatted about these and related issues with political sociologist and author Kristin Surak, whose recent book The Golden Passport takes a multidisciplinary look at global mobility for the wealthy and the complex system that has developed around it. They discussed the new "most powerful passport" rankings, the types of people who seek different citizenship through investment, Turkey's rise as a major Citizenship By Investment (CBI) player, the rise and fall of the program in Cyprus, how intermediary companies power the CBI system, the trailblazing CBI role of St. Kitts and Nevis, the challenges of European countries attempting to start and keep CBI programs, differing perceptions of CBI around the world, issues of equity and ethics, and the recent phenomena of digital nomads.Among the works mentioned in this episode:"The Henley Passport Index", Henley & PartnersThe book The Golden Passport: Global Mobility for Millionaires by Kristin SurakThe book Moneyland by Oliver BulloughThe book Making Tea, Making Japan by Kristin SurakThe book The Despot's Guide to Wealth Management by J. The demise of the USSR in the 1990s saw the state's vast wealth up for grabs by enterprising citizens; in making the public into the private, a new class of both Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs were born. For decades they played a pivotal role in both local – and often international – politics. But this era may be coming to an end. In both countries, political power is bringing the rich to heel. Will they manage? What does this mean for the mega rich across the globe? In this episode, we speak to Oliver Bullough, author of Moneyland, about the rise and fall of Russia and Ukraine's oligarchs, the effect of the war from 2014 to today on their wealth and status, similar trends in other countries, and how much responsibility the rest of the world bares for it all. Nastya also spoke with Maryna Khromykh, the executive director of the DEJURE Foundation, a think tank which fights against corruption in the judicial system in Ukraine, about the fallen Ukrainian civil activist and soldier Roman Ratushnyi, whose extraordinary life exemplifies the importance of standing up to corrupt elites. A special 5x15 event with Chris Blackhurst- an acclaimed writer, commentator, former editor of The Independent and author of Too Big To Jail (Macmillan)- in conversation with investigative reporter Oliver Bullough, author of Butler to the World and Moneyland. El Chapo, the world's number one drug baron, had a problem: he needed to launder the billions of dollars he netted from peddling drugs across the United States. Step forward, HSBC... Too Big to Jail : Inside HSBC, the Mexican drug cartels and the greatest banking scandal of the century by Chris Blackhurst tells the shocking story of how the bank that likes to call itself ‘the world's local bank' came to the aid of one of the world's biggest drug cartels. For years, HSBC via its Mexican subsidiary, acted as a giant laundromat for Chapo and his Sinaloa drugs cartel. In one visit, a Chapo henchman deposited $933,000, in cash; they also used specially made boxes that exactly fitted the cashiers' windows; the gangsters routed their money via HSBC in the Cayman Islands - 60,000 accounts were opened, holding $1.2billion. Warnings to the bank were ignored. The Americans wanted to prosecute HSBC bankers but incredibly, the UK government, in the shape of the Chancellor George Osborne, intervened, arguing this risked bringing down the bank and the entire financial system. In the end, in late 2012, HSBC received a fine, the largest in US history, of $1.9billion. But this amounted to just five weeks' profits. The result, as with the crisis of 2008, was that no banker went to jail. Too Big to Jail vividly and grippingly details this tale of appalling greed, hubris and utterly scandalous behaviour. Chris Blackhurst is an award-winning journalist and commentator. He worked on investigations for The Sunday Times, at Westminster, and was City Editor of the Evening Standard and Editor of The Independent. He was hailed in the Guardian as “the outstanding story-getter of his generation”. His writing has appeared in many of the world's leading titles. He is an accomplished broadcaster. Oliver Bullough is a prize-winning journalist and author from Wales, who specialises in the former Soviet Union and corruption. His work appears in the Guardian, the New York Times, GQ magazine, Prospect and elsewhere, and he regularly appears on the BBC, Sky News, CNN and other media outlets. His books include Moneyland, about which John le Carré said: "If you want to know why international crooks and their eminently respectable financial advisors walk tall and only the little people pay taxes, this is the ideal book for you" and most recently Butler to the World. Oliver Bullough studied modern history at Oxford University and moved to Russia after graduating in 1999. He lived in St Petersburg, Bishkek and Moscow over the next seven years, travelling widely as a reporter for Reuters news agency. His last book, Moneyland was a great, if not a touch depressing, read - a thorough examination of the world of offshore and elite finance. The super-rich really live in another world. Now he is back with Butler to the World; a book about how Britain became the fixer and enabler for the world's rich and powerful. Butler to the World reveals how the UK took up its position at the elbow of the worst people on Earth: the oligarchs, kleptocrats and gangsters. We pride ourselves on values of fair play and the rule of law, but few countries do more to frustrate global anti-corruption efforts. We are now a nation of Jeeveses, snobbish enablers for rich halfwits of considerably less charm than Bertie Wooster. In this lively interview series from the RSA, Matthew Taylor, puts a range of practitioners on the spot - from scholars to business leaders, politicians to journalists - by asking for big ideas to help build effective bridges to our new future. Is Britain really the butler to the world's kleptocrats, criminals and tax dodgers? Is this country, famed for its supposed sense of fair play, really one of the few to do more to frustrate global anti-corruption efforts? Journalist Oliver Bullough believes so. He joins Matthew to discuss the UK's addiction to dirty money, and what should be done about it. Oliver Bullough is the author of the financial expose Moneyland, and two celebrated books about the former Soviet Union: The Last Man in Russia and Let Our Fame Be Great. His journalism appears regularly in the Guardian, The New York Times and GQ. What is a butler? In his new book "Butler to the World," Oliver Bullough describes a butler as a person that was educated at all the right schools, cultivated all the right connections, and relies on centuries of learned experience in the service of wealthy individuals.Sound familiar? Through its offshore territories, endless loopholes, and hands-off approach to its financial sector, Bullough powerfully argues that Britain has spent the better part of a century occupying the role of Jeeves, only not to Bertie Wooster, but to global criminal organisations ranging from the drug cartel to the Putin regime. In this vital conversation, Bullough poses what is perhaps the most pertinent question facing the nation since the collapse of the empire: if we were to leave the butlering business once and for all, what would our new role be?To keep things light, we also contemplate all of the good P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves could have done in the world had he not wasted his talents on being a fixer for half-wits and drunken aristocrats.
On Episode #64 of the Book Talk Today podcast we are joined by Oliver Bullough. Oliver is an author and journalist. The golden passports and visas industry boomed during the pandemic and attracted the attention of policymakers. This week, we're reposting our interview with Oliver Bullough, author of “Moneyland”, on this shady industry and how it operates.

Oliver Bullough, Tom Burgis and Sarah Chayes, authors of three of the best books on global corruption, gather for a panel at the Annapolis Book Festival for a fascinating discussion about how the corrupt operate, often with impunity, and what can be done to slow the pace of looting.
Today I talk about, anything! In reality, I talk a lot about "Moneyland" which is how trillions of dollars are laundered.
Corporate secrecy and financial crime have long gone hand in hand. Hidden wealth is stashed away in shell companies with obscure owners, whose roles in tales of grand-scale corruption go long unexposed. Although recent years have seen a wave of momentum to unveil some of these ultimate beneficial owners, much more still needs to be done to increase corporate transparency and dismantle the system's abuse by organised criminals and corrupt politicians. In March, Henry Williams, Head of Investigations at Themis, sat down with Oliver Bullough, investigative journalist and award-winning author of “Moneyland”, to hear his thoughts about this dark underside of the global financial system. This podcast is brought to you by Themis, with thanks to our partners Encompass.

The Green New Deal is a plan to vastly transform our society. Through bold economic and social change it's a plan to save the Earth from the destructive forces of capitalism. that is going to cost a lot of money to do, and as the age old attack on the Left goes "how are you gonna pay for it?". 7.8 Trillion Dollars is estimated to be in tax havens and offshore accounts worldwide. Sounds like a good start to me. There’s a secret country out there that’s invisible to most of us. It’s called Moneyland. This country doesn’t discriminate against outsiders. It’s open to anyone, so long as they can afford the entrance fee. It’s very big and very important – the country may contain an eighth of all the wealth in the world. It’s a virtual place. You can’t find it on the map. But it’s also a very real, physical place. The person right next to you, right now, might be living in Moneyland. The house next door might be in Moneyland, even though it has a street name and number just like yours. Moneyland is where the world’s super-rich, its most powerful businessmen, its best-connected politicians and its cleverest criminals all hang out. How can we begin to understand this place, which we can’t really see or measure? Oliver Bullough, an award-winning writer and my guest on this New Money Review podcast, can help us answer that question.
In this episode we discuss the implications of tax havens on the global financial system, how Britain can help you get rich quick through illicit means, the damage that illegal economies cause, the dark side of globalisation, why more regulation may not matter and so much more. We're joined by Oliver Bullough, author of Moneyland, who's spent years charting how illegal money flows across the world. His unique perspective gives new insights into regulatory arbitrage, why the current system isn't sustainable and the real world impact that illegal finance has on us all. This week, we're talking to Oliver Bullough, author of the book Moneyland: The Inside Story of the Crooks and Kleptocrats Who Rule the World. He tells us about the corrupt bureaucrats who steal and hide trillions of dollars offshore, how they get away with it, and why the best place to hide your money is South Dakota!
In this episode of the Power 3.0 podcast, featured guest Oliver Bullough discusses how transnational kleptocracy—the process by which illicit money is stolen in one location, laundered through anonymous off-shore vehicles, and spent in jurisdictions where it is safe from interference—corrodes democratic and rules-based institutions. Oliver Bullough is an award-winning journalist, author, and commentator, specializing in the former Soviet Union and illicit money flows. His latest book, Moneyland: The Inside Story of the Crooks and Kleptocrats Who Rule the World, was named an Economist Book of the Year and the Sunday Times Business Book of the Year. Christopher Walker, NED vice president for studies and analysis, and Shanthi Kalathil, senior director of NED’s International Forum for Democratic Studies, cohost the conversation. The views expressed in this podcast represent the opinions and analysis of the participants and do not necessarily reflect those of the National Endowment for Democracy or its staff.
Oliver Bullough (@OliverBullough) is a journalist, a regular contributor to The Guardian, and author of Moneyland: Why Thieves And Crooks Now Rule The World And How To Take It Back. What We Discuss with Oliver Bullough: How corrupt leaders pilfer everything from wildlife reserves, banks, and even national healthcare systems. How this type of graft corrupts society and leads to other crime and unrest -- such as terrorism and flawed elections. How corruption filters down the economic food chain, harming children and those who can't defend themselves. How dark money can be used for a host of unsavory purposes, and why it's nearly impossible to uncover it because of shell corporations, passports for sale, and the fact that dark money knows no borders. What we might do to begin reeling in this lopsided power structure from its offshore roots in a way that benefits the fair-playing majority. And much more...

Hello! And welcome to another edition of the Inside The Newsroom podcast newsletter! Today’s guest is... Henry Abbott, founder of the TrueHoop basketball blog and newsletter! I’ve followed Henry’s work for a few years now, so I’m honoured to have him on. Henry and his team changed the way I and many others look at basketball, and TrueHoop is one of the few investigative outlets out there daring to tell the truth about sports.TrueHoop is BackAfter a two-year layoff, Henry and TrueHoop are back. In our discussion, Henry talked about what he learned and how he kept sane during his time away. The lesson: watch a buzzard circle outside the window and take stock of life. TrueHoop is one of the few sports investigative outlets out there and ESPN made a huge mistake by letting it go as part of its 2017 purge. But that’s the past. Henry and co. are back with more motivation to tell the truth about sports than ever before. The Truth About Mikhail ProkhorovIn the first investigative series of the relaunch, Henry dug deep into the affairs of Brooklyn Nets owner and Russian oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov. There is so so so much money involved in the major leagues right now and too few people investigating where this money came from. Henry went as far as to attend Putin Con (an actual thing), and also found himself in the office of Prokhorov’s lawyer, who just so happens to be Donald Trump’s lawyer as well. Henry Abbott, TrueHoopWhat the F is Putin Con?A conference where thousands of people attend to hear about the dangers of the Vladimir Putin administration. Who wants to go next year? What’s Lurking in Your Stadium Food? One of those few news outlets investigating sports is ESPN’s Outside The Lines, who have done countless power-altering pieces in the past. In their stadium food series, they investigated 111 professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey facilities across North America and found that at 28 percent of the venues, at least half had food outlets that incurred a high-level violation, including bugs and pests. They also include a neat tool that allows you to find out the violations at your nearest stadiums. Paula Lavigne, ESPNMoneylandTalking of rich and powerful people, Henry referenced one of the books he read in his time off. Moneyland by Oliver Bullough details the pervasive use of tax havens and shell companies to hide money and ultimately evade paying tax. Again, completely anecdotal, but there seems to be an invisible shield around the owners of our teams and leagues that goes unchecked. Anyway, Moneyland has been added to the reading list.Andy Beckett, The GuardianThe NFL is Bipartisan? The NBA has ascended in recent years as the most progressive and open league in North America, and is part of the reason why I’m such a huge fan. But wearing my journalist hat makes me skeptical. A big reason why the NBA has grown in popularity is because of the NFL’s self-destruction when it comes to domestic violence, CTE and comparing black players to inmates. Like most things, it largely comes down to money, and as my former colleagues at FiveThirtyEight point out, the NFL is unique in that its fans transverse the political spectrum.Neil Paine, Harry Enten and Andrea Jones-Rooy, FiveThirtyEightWhat is ‘Amygdala Hijack’?In the podcast, Henry and I talk about why sports fans make dumb decisions that they wouldn’t otherwise make in real life. According to Henry, it comes down to ‘amygdala hijack’, which I’ll save myself from explaining and include the below video instead. The ‘Donald Trump Effect’ on JournalismThe vicious attacks on journalism’s legitimacy and importance by Donald Trump and his administration have not gone unnoticed. The Washington Post reported that journalism school admissions have spiked since 2016, particularly for investigative and data tracks. This is good and I hope the folks entering the field keep their eyes open to injustices and corruption in sport as well.Nick Anderson, Washington PostRelated Podcasts#35 — Richard Deitsch (The Athletic)#28 — Jonah Keri (The Athletic)#26 — Jacob Bogage (Washington Post Sports)#4 — Chris Herring (FiveThirtyEight)Next up…To be confirmed…Last time…#38 — Shane Morris (Lil Nas X)Thanks so much for making it all the way to the bottom. David talks to Helen Thompson about the economic order that was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. What was agreed at Bretton Woods, how did it work, why did it eventually fail, and can any of it be revived?Talking Points:The Bretton Woods system:Established a system of fixed exchange rates with the U.S. dollar as the international reserve currency (other currencies were pegged to the dollar, and the dollar was pegged to gold)Created the IMF and the World BankEstablished capital controlsOn the surface, Bretton Woods is a success story. The following three decades were a period of economic growth and relative stability. But there are other parts of that story too, such as low oil prices. The system had to be patched up many times from 1961 onward, in part because of the misaligned role of dollars and gold. Bretton Woods also created a problem for U.S. presidents who had to balance domestic and international pressures on the dollar. The election of Richard Nixon in 1968 marked the beginning of the end for Bretton Woods.Nixon didn’t like Bretton Woods because it imposed domestic constraints that were at odds with his protectionist message. In 1971, Nixon ended dollar/gold convertibility. By 1973, it was clear that there was no longer the will to sustain Bretton Woods. The Bretton woods system was a function of American power—there’s no going back now.A system like Bretton Woods needs an anchoring power. China doesn’t have a currency that is convertible in the same way and the Chinese are wary of the domestic pitfalls of becoming the international currency.Further Learning: In the Talking Politics Guide to… the 1970s: Helen discusses the decade in which the Bretton Woods system broke down. The panel speaks to Oliver Bullough about “Moneyland,” and how a handful of London bankers helped break Bretton Woods. Why did the architect of Bretton Woods spy for the Soviets? Today, we take a little trip to a place called “Moneyland”. Moneyland is a virtual place – but it is also very real. In fact, it is the third richest “country” in the world. Moneyland is the title of the Times of London's Business Book of the Year, written by our guest Oliver Bullough. Oliver is an award-winning investigative journalist. He previously wrote two non-fiction books on Russia's history and politics. The book's full title is Moneyland: Why Thieves and Crooks Rule the World and How to Take it Back. It is where many of the world's mega rich, particularly kleptocrats in a variety of countries characterised by high levels of corruption, hide and spend their stolen wealth. As you will hear from Oliver, Moneyland is a lawless, stateless place. It is also one that the West's own institutions have helped to create, and in the process undermine the foundations of Western stability. We cover that and more in this enthralling conversation, including: What Moneyland is and how it got created; How Moneyland works – how kleptocrats can steal, hid and spend their ill-gotten wealth (and do things like buy passports); Tax havens and how they work; The role of the West in creating Moneyland, and how Moneyland is undermining democracy; What we can do to fight back against Moneyland Show notes: Moneyland: Why Thieves and Crooks Rule the World and How to Take it Back Oliver on Twitter A Kleptocracy Tour of London with Oliver Kleptocracy Tours Viktor Yanukovych Francis Fukuyama Walid al-Juffali The Eurobond Gabriel Zucman's The Hidden Wealth of Nations Civil Society Groups: Global Witness Transparency International Corruption Watch FACT Coalition The Hudson Institute's Kleptocracy Initiative Sherpa _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Get your free audio book and 30 day free trial at Audible: US listeners: get your free trial and audio book at Audible UK listeners: get your free trial and audio book at Audible _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ Like what you heard?
