On this episode of #LatinosOutLoud, #RachelLaLoca is on location with trailblazing Latina mixologist, cookbook author, and owner of Julep Houston, Alba Huerta whose unparalleled talent and dedication to her craft have earned her a distinguished place in the world of mixology. The two met up at Jingle Jangle on Pier 17 in NYC for a festive chat. Alba takes us to school and teaches Rachel how to make two very easy, yet elaborate cocktails--PERECT to bring to your holiday parties or while just kicking it with your chestnuts by the open fire. Her innovative approach to curating craft cocktails has not only won her numerous awards but also elevated the status of mixology as a respected art form. As a Latina woman in a predominantly white male industry, Alba's success is a beacon of inspiration for aspiring mixologists and entrepreneurs everywhere. Alba's Mexican heritage deeply influences her cocktail creations, blending traditional Latin flavors with contemporary mixology techniques. In a time when representation and diversity are more important than ever, Alba Huerta's story is one of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride. Her accolades and achievements highlight the rich contributions of Latina women to the culinary world but also inspire a broader audience to appreciate the artistry and skill involved in mixology. I'd Rather Be Reading

Today on the show we're talking about the legend that is Barbara Walters. We actually have another journalist I admire, Susan Page, who wrote The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters (which just came out on April 23), talking about a journalist I admire, so our cup runneth over with powerhouse female journalists. Barbara lived a long, full life, passing away on December 30, 2022, at 93 years old. In her lifetime, she became one of the most well-known and well-regarded broadcast journalists and television personalities, perhaps most famous for her genius level interviewing ability and for breaking barriers that once prevented women from being equal to men when it came to broadcast journalism. She was an Emmy winner and hosted numerous programs like Today, the ABC Evening News, 20/20, and she created The View, which Susan and I talk about on the show today. She was a working journalist from 1951 until her retirement in 2015 and was very deservedly inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989; she even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the early 1960s, Barbara was relegated to reporting on women's interest stories on Today, but her popularity amongst viewers eventually catapulted to her becoming a co-host of the show in 1974, the first woman to hold such a role on an American news program. In 1976, she broke down more barriers when she became the first American female co-anchor of a network evening news program alongside Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News—which, um, did not go so well. Don't worry, Susan and I talk about that, too. She became known for her annual Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People, and during her career interviewed every sitting U.S. president and First Lady from the Nixons to the Obamas; she also interviewed both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, but not when either was president. Her interviews with subjects ranging from Fidel Castro to Monica Lewinsky and so many more gained her recognition as the best interviewer in the business, but who was Barbara Walters the person, not the personality? Well, Susan's book lays it all out. We learn about Barbara's marriages—she was married four times to three men—her daughter, other romantic relationships, and her childhood, especially her relationship with her father and her sister, and how those relationships shaped her into the woman she became. Today on the show to discuss it all is Susan Page, the Washington, D.C. bureau chief for USA Today. This is Susan's third biography of a powerful woman: her first, about Barbara Bush, was released in 2019 and is called The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty. She then released a biography about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power in 2021, and her third book is The Rulebreaker. Susan has covered seven White House administrations and 11 presidential elections and has interviewed 10 presidents, right up there with Barbara Walters. She also moderated the 2020 vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, founded and hosts a video newsmaker series for USA Today called “Capital Download,” and appears frequently as a panelist or an analyst on various news programs, including Meet the Press—and was even president of the White House Correspondents Association at one point. I can't wait for you to hear our conversation.   The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters by Susan Page

Using Behavioral Science in Marketing: Drive Customer Action and Loyalty by Prompting Instinctive Responses by Nancy Harhut About the Book: Increase engagement, response rates, and the ROI of marketing initiatives with this step-by-step guide to harnessing hardwired consumer behavior and instinctive responses. Using Behavioral Science in Marketing shows how to apply behavioral science principles in key areas of marketing, including marketing communications, email, direct mail and ad campaigns, social media marketing, and sales funnel conversion strategies. [02:05] Her first book, Using Behavioral Science in Marketing just came out this week.  [04:20] Nancy shares about herself, her background, and how she found herself in the world of behavioral science.  [06:01] She took principles and research from behavioral science and applied/tested them in marketing.  [07:37] Anything she could find that might give her clients an advantage or extra edge was something she wanted to explore.  [10:20] It is important to test so we know what is working and what doesn't work.  [11:10] Nancy's examples in the book are very tangible, clear, easy, thorough, and thoughtful.  [13:49] Social proof is incredibly powerful. Nancy shares examples of using social proof with her clients and the results. [16:31] Nancy shares why she wrote her new book. People were often asking if she had a book, including her now publisher Kogan Page.  [16:54] Behavioral science and marketing absolutely work. Writing a book helps many more people to benefit from it.  [19:19] She wanted to create a book that was short on science and long on applicability. She wanted it to be practical, easy to read, and actionable. (“Mission accomplished!” says Melina.)  [21:30] She started her book with emotional and rational thinking because it was a good foundational factor and from there she started to talk about behavioral science principles that are strongly linked to emotion.  [23:24] Having more good books in the world is always a positive thing.  [25:44] If you present somebody with a couple of options as opposed to just one thing, they are much more likely to make a buying decision at the moment. If there are two options the question automatically changes to “Which of these two do I want?”  [28:29] When saying “You have to make a choice and if you don't, someone else is going to make it for you” leverages autonomy bias. There was a bigger response because people didn't want someone making choices for them.  [30:04] Behavioral science is not just for marketing. It is applicable across so many areas and professions.  [33:04] Nancy shares an example of using choice architecture with a client that sold voluntary benefits.  [34:47] They made accepting the meeting the easy choice and the path with the least resistance.  [35:57] Melina shares an example of a blood drive on a college campus. [39:22] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [39:42] You are constantly communicating with people and there are small tweaks to your messaging that can make all the difference. [40:13] Melina's new book, What Your Employees Need and Can't Tell You is coming out on October 11th, 2022.  [42:04] If you enjoy the experience I've provided here for you, will you share about it? The man, the myth, the legend, 27 years on air, nearly 4000 episodes, one of the longest-running talk show hosts in history, Jerry Springer!  Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!  And he had a question ready for my daddy too!  This episode was a dream, one I won't forget!  Definitely not censored! The successful have a calming effect because they got there and they're seeing us from a different sightline.  That's the calm we have to get to.  Would you want to be famous?  I truly believe Jerry's legacy is all the lives he's touched and the careers he's made, we are all taking a piece of him with us.  What does legacy mean to Jerry?  How does show business work?  What advice does Jerry give?  How does one become a star? The Jerry Springer Show was one of the best experiences of my life!  Today we talk about what it was really like behind the scenes of producing the show and the American Dream!  Better Call Daddy: The Safe Space For Controversy! Throughout an illustrious career, Jerry Springer has become a cultural and civic icon. In addition to being one of the world's most well-known talk show hosts, Springer has been the mayor of Cincinnati, a political pundit, lawyer, Emmy award-winning newscaster, game show host, country recording artist, international emcee, and TV personality. Springer has been in movies and on Broadway, he's a progressive talk-radio broadcaster and Springer won America's hearts with his ballroom dancing. Recently Springer added Podcaster with the wildly popular “Tales, Tunes and Tomfoolery” at www.JerrySpringer.com   Because of the lasting popularity of his talk show and political interests, Springer has become a favorite guest speaker at college campuses across the USA and the world. In recent years, Springer was welcomed at The Clinton School of Public Service, Harvard, Yale, Georgetown, George Washington, American University, Tulane, as well as other academic institutions.   Springer was personally invited by both the Oxford Union of Oxford University and Cambridge University to participate in their guest lecture series. In Oxford, Springer broke all attendance records for that long-standing series and has been invited back several times. In 2011, Springer kicked off the prestigious Eisenhower Symposium at Johns Hopkins University speaking on the topic of “America's Boundless Possibilities.” Everyone knew Springer had "arrived" as a true cultural icon when he was the featured character in The Simpsons' 1998 Halloween Special.  He has also graced the cover of Rolling Stone, Esquire, TV Guide and New York Magazine. Springer has also joined the exclusive club of being named one of Barbara Walters 10 Most Fascinating People. "Ringmaster" hit bookstore shelves in 1998. Penned by Springer, it was a personal account of his experiences along with remembrances from his childhood and professional career. Also, in 1998, Springer made his first venture into feature films, starring in Ringmaster, a fictionalized movie chronicling his television talk show. In 1999, Springer teamed up with Mike Myers, where he portrayed himself in the hit movie "Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me." In 2009, Springer brought his comedic skills and theatrical style to London's West End playing the role of Billy Flynn in the hit musical production of Chicago. Warwick Thompson of Bloomberg News, said, "There's the sheer pleasure of watching a genial TV pundit in a fish-out-of-water situation and having a good time.”  Springer reprised the role in the United States and, as a culmination, played Billy Flynn on Broadway – a life-changing event for Springer.   A parody of The Jerry Springer Show, Jerry Springer: The Opera played in London to sold-out crowds at the prestigious National Theater and then won the Lawrence Olivier Award for best musical which is akin to the Tony Awards. The Opera toured throughout England and received outstanding reviews. The Opera had its New York premiere at Carnegie Hall in January of 2008 with movie star Harvey Keitel playing the role of Springer. JSTO continues to travel across the USA and the world to sold-out crowds and controversial but rave reviews.   Additionally, Springer has hosted a variety show in England and South Africa. The South African program was broadcast in more than 40 African nations, featuring interviews with celebrities, monologues, and skits in front of a live studio audience. It ranked among the most popular television show in South Africa.  All proceeds from the show went to AIDS charities. Springer has spread his wings recording two CD's in Nashville, one aptly titled "Dr. Talk." He has also twice served as the master of ceremonies for the “Miss World Pageant.” Springer added a Broadway appearance to his distinguished list of achievements, starring for a week in the production of the Rocky Horror Show Live. Springer again hit the London stage in a limited engagement playing the role of Captain Hook in the UK New Wimbledon Theatre's production of Peter Pan. Gerald Norman Springer was born on February 13, 1944 in London's Highgate Tube station (subway station) due to the bombs falling on London during World War II. His parents had successfully fled Eastern Europe and the Holocaust but unfortunately, Springer lost most of his family in the concentration camps.   At 5 years old, Springer and his family immigrated to New York City from London on the Queen Mary. For the Springer family, America represented a place where people could live without the persecution his parents knew all too well. They settled in Kew Gardens, Queens. His college years took him south to Louisiana, where he earned a degree in political science at Tulane University. He then received his law degree from Northwestern University in Illinois. In 1968, his life changed during a dinner meeting with then New York Senator, Robert Kennedy, who was running for president behind the push for social change. Springer signed on with the Kennedy campaign, but shortly thereafter felt the horror of Kennedy's assassination along with the rest of the world. That moment in history served as a catalyst for Springer, compelling him into political action which he has never abandoned. After joining a law firm in Cincinnati, he spearheaded the movement in Ohio to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, culminating with Springer being invited to address the Senate Judiciary Committee giving testimony in support of ratification of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution. He ran for Congress in Ohio in 1970, nearly beating the entrenched Republican incumbent. In 1971, he won a seat on the Cincinnati City Council and served five terms before becoming mayor at the age of 33 with the largest plurality in the city's history. He was the youngest Mayor ever elected to a major US city at that time. After an unsuccessful bid for governor of Ohio in 1982, Springer was courted by the big three networks, ultimately signing with the then last place NBC affiliate, WLWT. As their anchor and Managing Editor, Springer took WLWT to first place. It was his nightly commentaries, the precursor to his now legendary "Final Thought," that landed him seven Emmys. Springer was voted television's best anchor for five consecutive years by readers of Cincinnati Magazine.   While Springer was still successfully anchoring and managing the news in Cincinnati, he was ‘assigned' a new job as host of a new talk show. The company that owned the NBC station in Cincinnati also owned The Sally Jesse Raphael Show and The Phil Donahue Show. So, in September of 1991, The Jerry Springer Show was born. The show was shot in Cincinnati the first year and Jerry continued to do evening news. The show moved to Chicago in its second year, expanding the number of syndicated markets. Jerry would tape shows in Chicago in the morning and fly back to Cincinnati to do the evening news. Finally, in 1993, Springer did his last newscast in Cincinnati although he still thinks of that city as ‘home.' In May of 2008, Springer was invited to be Commencement Speaker at his alma mater, Northwestern University School of Law, Juris Doctor 1968. Springer ended his address with a story about his parents, who escaped the Holocaust and immigrated to the United States in 1949. "In one generation here in America, my family went from near-total annihilation to the ridiculously privileged life I live today because of my show," Springer said, his voice wavering slightly. "Indeed, in America, all things are possible."   Thank you to our new sponsor wtfnovelties.com omg to their website.  Use the code Daddy25 for 25% off sitewide except for single balls because one ball ain't enough.  Perfect for Purim baskets, Passover gag gifts, or Easter egg hunts! Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—You Can Be Tougher” podcast this week is sponsored by Mint Home Loans and features Jerry Springer, renowned American television host, politician, news presenter, actor, producer, musician, and former lawyer. Springer revolutionized daytime TV with his ultra-popular show, The Jerry Springer Show, a daytime talk show featuring controversial topics and outrageous guest behavior. Springer currently hosts a courtroom show called Judge Jerry where he presides over actual legal disputes. Gerald Norman “Jerry” Springer was born on February 13, 1944 in London, England to Jewish refugees—Margot Kallmann, a bank clerk and Richard Springer, owner of a shoe shop—who escaped Nazi Germany to avoid persecution. Other family members, including his paternal grandmother, were not as fortunate as they perished in concentration camps during the holocaust. In January 1949, Jerry’s family immigrated to the United States, settling in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York. He attended Forest Hills High School and later earned a B.A. degree from Tulane University in 1965, majoring in political science; and subsequently earned a law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago in 1968. One of his earliest memories about current and political events was when he was 12 and watching the 1956 Democratic National Convention on television where he saw and was impressed by John F. Kennedy. That interest in politics led him to work on the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy, after graduating law school. After Kennedy’s assassination, he joined the Cincinnati law firm of Frost & Jacobs (now Frost Brown Todd) and then became a partner in the law firm of Grinker, Sudman & Springer (from 1973 to 1985). In the early 1970s Jerry embarked on his own political career in Ohio, serving on Cincinnati’s city council. Not without some career lows, he was forced to resign from the council over a controversial issue, although he regained his seat at the next election. Despite being a liberal in relatively conservative Cincinnati, he was elected mayor of the city in 1977 (served 1977–78). After a failed bid in the early 1980’s for the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio he decided to pursue television journalism and began work as a reporter at a local television station. He later became anchor and was the recipient of seven Emmy Awards for commentaries during his tenure. In 1991 he branched out into talk shows with the debut of The Jerry Springer Show. Initially centered on political issues—guests included Oliver North and Jesse Jackson, and topics included homelessness and gun politics—the program struggled in its first few seasons. In early 1994, the show underwent a complete overhaul as Springer and his new producer, Richard Dominick, revamped the show’s format to garner higher ratings. Guests were everyday people confronted on a television stage by controversial situations that often promoted shouting or violence on stage. Although criticized by some as being staged and condemned by many political and community leaders as “trash TV,” it proved immensely popular with television viewers and received substantial ratings and much attention. By 1998, it was beating The Oprah Winfrey Show in many cities, and was reaching more than 6.7 million viewers. The show even inspired an opera—debuting in London in 2003—which won a Laurence Olivier Award for best new musical; and was subsequently staged in various U.S. cities. Other career highlights include being named “One of the 10 Most Fascinating People” in 1998; an appearance on the popular show Dancing With the Stars in 2006; Winner, 2008 Fox Reality Channel Really Award for “Favorite Host” for America’s Got Talent; playing Billy Flynn in the Broadway theatrical production of “Chicago;” host of the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant. In 1998 Jerry starred in the movie Ringmaster, which was based on a Springer-esque television show. His other film credits include Citizen Verdict (2003) and The Defender (2004), in which he played the president of the United States. He has also made several TV appearances as himself and has acted in several television sitcoms. His autobiography, Ringmaster! (written with Laura Morton), was published in 1998. And as a self-described “country singer-songwriter,” Jerry has opened for Billy Ray Cyrus and has performed at actor Johnny Depp’s notorious club, the Viper Room. Springer is married and is a lifelong New York Yankees fan. Join Dustin and Jerry for a candid talk on his successful and sometimes controversial career and how he maintains clarity and peace amongst criticism and judgement. As Jerry says, “I think technology has changed the way we see things. Human behavior has not changed in the last 3,000 years. There is nothing that has ever been on our show that isn’t in the Bible, that isn’t in literature, that isn’t in Shakespeare.”

What are the core traits that make someone successful? I'll give you a hint: it's not about being perfect at everything. It's not about being all things to all people, all the time. "We're built with a set of gifts," explains Denise Hamilton. "You are not designed to impact the world through your weaknesses. You're designed to impact the world through your strengths." Forget editing and filtering your favorite snaps and think about how you filter what you see on social media. Why? Because our self-worth, ability to "start" the projects we've been dreaming of and embrace who we are as parents and people depends on it. Most of us can only do a few things really well, so why are we suddenly so hung up on doing everything perfectly? The energy we're putting in to firing on all cylinders in every area of life is draining us and causing burnout in epic proportions. Not only that, but we're expecting the same of our spouses and others around us in a way that's detrimental to our happiness and mental health. But alas, there is oh-so-much hope. Hear it, listen to it and feel it in this latest episode of LMNH with the one and only Denise Hamilton, founder of Watch Her Work (www.watcherwork.com.) We dish on the political and cultural events that piqued our interest. Imagine Barbara Walters' "Most Fascinating People of the Year" list, but more... "oooh girl." We dish out our Roses of 2017. We dish out our Thorns of 2017. And then we also rebuke some things that took place in 2017, because "oooh girl" we can't bring that energy into 2018. Basically we rebuked Sophia The Robot because sis needs a wig. And men. Because men have 404 Error'd all year long. Be better Sophia and mens! Also, luckily for you we're the one podcast that didn't include Bitcoin hot takes -- keep ya Coinbase, Binance, Genesis, Minecraft'ing arbitrage to yourselves! We hope you've enjoyed and that you continue to support us in 2018. Spread the GOOD NEWS of the Two Wise Jawns (^_^)/ Happy Holidays! Habari Gani!? Blessings! Recorded Friday December 22, 2017.

If You Are There (Counterpoint Press) Set in the early 1900s, If You Are There follows young Lucia Rutkowski who, thanks to the influence of her beloved grandmother, escapes the Warsaw ghetto to work as a kitchen maid in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the bustling city of Paris. Too talented for her lowly position, Lucia is thrown out on the street. Her only recourse is to take a job working for two disorganized, rather poor married scientists so distracted by their work that their house and young child are often neglected. Lucia soon bonds with her eccentric employers, watching as their work with radioactive materials grows increasing noticed by the world, then rising to fame as the great Marie and Pierre Curie.  Soon, all of Paris is alit with the news of an impending visit from Eusapia Palladino, the world's most famous medium. It is through her now famous employers that Lucia attends Eusapia's gatherings and eventually falls under the medium's spell, leaving the Curie household to travel with her to Italy. Ultimately, Lucia is placed directly in the crosshairs of faith versus science--what is more real, the glowing substances of the Curie laboratory or the glowing visions that surround the medium during her seance?  If You Are There is a thrilling, page-turning novel that draws upon real characters and events to detail its examination of a young woman torn between the beliefs she was born with and the scientific realities blooming all around her.  Praise for If You Are There “The fictional and historical mingle in Sherman's marvelous account of the lives of Marie and Pierre Curie. It is a rare book that is as scientific as it is magical and as magical as it is scientific. This is that book.” —Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award "This splendid novel is about discovery, in its many forms: in science, in love, in ambition, in connection; it celebrates the intersection of the natural world and faith. Sherman explores all of her characters with precise, tender compassion and radiant insight; we move with them through beautifully described turn-of-the-century Europe, as they find their own understanding of love and loss and strength. You will love this unforgettable book." —Karen E. Bender, author of Refund, Finalist for the National Book Award   Susan Sherman is the author of The Little Russian. She is the former Chair of the Art Department of Whittier College and the co-creator of one of the most successful television shows for children in the history of the Disney Network.
