The threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine still looms with officials saying it could happen within several days. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, appearing at the United Nations, laid out what a Russian invasion could look like saying that missiles and bombs could drop across Ukraine, communications would be jammed, and cyber-attacks could shut down key institutions. Officials said that Russia could be trying to set up a pretext such as a violent event that would justify an invasion. Nahal Toosi, senior foreign affairs correspondent at Politico, joins us for more. Next, gunshot detection devices that are used in cities across the U.S. are getting criticism for their high cost and whether they are effective at reducing crime. One such company is called ShotSpotter who has contracts with about 120 police agencies who pay $65,000 to $90,000 a year for each square mile of service. The other angle to this is that ShotSpotter helps police departments apply for federal grants so they can afford the technology. Jon Schuppe, reporter at NBC News Digital, joins us for how ShotSpotter is winning police contracts and fighting criticism. The History of Exercise, Part 2: Danielle Friedman on Women in Fitness

#WeGotGoals

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2022 50:02

Who's the first female fitness figure you vividly remember? For me, it's Mia Hamm. I was 10 years old in 1999, when Mia and the U.S. women won the World Cup in an epic shootout. And yes, that was the one with the Brandi Chastain sports bra moment. By the time I was participating in sports, TItle IX had been around for nearly 20 years. The 90s felt like women were really stepping into their athletic power through sports. But long before I was born, women had been quietly - and then loudly- crusading for the physical benefits of exercise, talking about why women both needed and deserved to work out. It all starts with a dynamic young woman named Bonnie Prudden. Her report to President Eisenhower on how America's children were physically unfit led to the formation of the President's Council on Youth Fitness and yes, that dreaded test you might have taken in elementary school. But before she was shaking hands with the president, Bonnie was an expert rock climber, a mountaineer, and the owner of an old elementary school. She turned that school into the Institute for Physical Fitness, housing three gyms, two dance studios, an obstacle course, and America's first climbing wall. In many ways, we credit Bonnie as the pioneer in women's fitness. Before her, women were afraid to exercise because they were told their uterus would fall out if they did. Yes, really.I'd never heard of Bonnie Prudden, and I'm guessing Bonnie is a stranger to you, too. And I know she wasn't the only female fitness leader lost to time. That's why we're talking to Danielle Friedman, author of Let's Get Physical: How Women Discovered Exercise and Reshaped the World. Danielle's book was inspired by a viral essay she wrote for The Cut about the secret sexual history of barre. When she saw the response to her article, Danielle realized that there was a rich history of women in fitness. Decade by decade, Danielle covers the evolution of women in fitness, from barre to running to yoga to strength training. She highlights moments of cultural revolution, like when Jazzercise was a part of the Opening Ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics, and when Jane Fonda found her way into millions of Americans' homes throughout her insanely popular workout videos. Through it all, Danielle carefully analyzes the messaging women heard about their bodies – what the ideal figure was and how they could get it through exercise. Right now, we're at a time when women are encouraged to exercise to get strong, and to feel empowered. But not so long ago, the messaging was much more reductive, even from the women we now recognize as heroines in fitness history. Anecdotally, I know a lot of women who have struggled with disordered relationships to exercise and body image. It was eye-opening to realize the extent to which these aren't new issues. So, here's what you can look forward to in this interview. Danielle gives me a quick overview of the history of women in fitness. We also get into how women's clothes evolved to support the moving woman (the sports bra, after all, is a relatively recent invention), and Black women who were instrumental in changing fitness. Finally, we end with what she would add to her book now if she had the opportunity to write a pandemic-specific chapter. About Danielle FriedmanDanielle Friedman is an award-winning journalist whose feature writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour, Health, and other publications. She has worked as a senior editor at NBC News Digital and The Daily Beast, and she began her career as a nonfiction book editor at the Penguin imprints Hudson Street Press and Plume. Kyle Scott is one of the most passionate people we've ever had on the Just Keep Learning Podcast when it comes to learning himself. Throughout his entire life, as a kid, in school and within his career, he has always adopted that JKL mindset too.In this episode, we talked about goal setting, manifestation and understanding what drives you. We also discussed some more technical components of being an entrepreneur, or business leader. Kyle has learned a lot about business from working at NBC and being Ryan Serhant's right hand man as President of Serhant Ventures. But he is also working formally on his MBA.There is no one one the show to date that can drop more names than Kyle could. He shares a lot of wisdom that he picked up over the course of ten years producing content for NBC. As a video journalist he interviewed the likes of Michael Phelps, William Shatner, Mel Robbins, Daymond John and many more thought leaders. One thing you'll notice is he has a special ability to pick up a little something from everyone he meets. He is also an avid reader and explains to the audience all about how books are the things that turn his money dial. Money dials is a concept learned from Ramit Sethi, whereby you allow yourself to restrict spending on things you don't actually gain intrinsic joy from. But, you spend freely on the things that you do gain appreciation from. Because Kyle has read so many books, and met so many authors, he can drop a whole lot of wisdom. We talked a lot about education and learning in general. One thing that has elevated Kyle throughout many points in his career is the ability to learn and pivot when others start to slow down. By setting goals, continually improving his mindset and staying focused he has achieved a lot in his career. The main two things we talked about were sales and creating awesome courses. Kyle has a high level of talent and expertise in both. The most important thing that he points out is that selling is human. In order to live a good life we have to be good at sales. Moreover, the ability to sell is transferable, but if you want to build a brand and community, the ability to focus on your niche is huge! Kyle provided us some examples of sales techniques and strategies they teach in their top course, “sell it like serhant”.When it comes to creating courses that convert we talked a lot about online education and production quality. We also discussed how important it is that the learning actually provide real world examples. When teaching someone the goal has to be to help change their behaviour. This happens by sending knowledge, but most importantly by helping them unlearn, and shift their mindset. 12 Steps To Create Awesome Online CoursesWe know that education is increasingly moving online. It's not something that will slow down, in fact it will only speed up. So, here are some of the most important steps to take in order to launch a successful online course.Provide a balance of higher level information and nitty gritty details about how to implement what the audience should be learning.Don't overthink, but ensure you have good storytelling foundations. What is the beginning, middle and end of the lesson and how are you taking the listener through a narrative arc?A talking head and whiteboard are not enough to make for a successful course.Use language that the audience understands and can relate to in order to make sure they are connected since you are not in person.Make sure you have clean audio. Reduce ambient noise, static and use quality microphones.Create visual variety. Can have a talking head and board. But, you should make sure you have a medium shot of the teacher, a wide shot that shows the whole scene and closeups of drawing, writing, or talking. Add more and more production value by adding some movement.Make the lessons engaging by connecting the importance to real life scenarios. Show how it's actually being used in something that's visually interesting and demonstrates application of the concept. You need to share theory in a course, but this is a great time to add visual elements in the use of graphics. Put graphics such as key terms and quotes on top of talking head shots. Don't over use it, but use b-roll if it adds a visual element, while staying on brand and focus with the video. Create lists for things like learning goals, and recaps. Keep the audience knowing sneak peaks of what's to come, while not having the answers. In other words, share some fill in the blanks, or these 6 things are what we'll learn and keep bringing the audience along while checking each thing off.Always implement some style of actual practice and execution of the things the audience is learning. Learn something, implement, reflect, feedback, and repeat.Create moments for community discussion, questions and debrief.Memorable Quotes“You have to believe in your product so much that it would be like a crime for your potential customers to not be able to purchase it.”“In the course we talk about the 4 W's to a great life in work. Why do you wake up every day? What will you do? What are you running from? And what are you working toward winning?”“When teaching, increase engagement by creating relevant scenarios that make connections to real life. Say you're teaching calculus. You could show the design process of a Boeing 787. Then have people take it a step further and apply the concept themselves. All of a sudden you not only have visual variety, but you have a story and a problem that needs to be solved. That is how you make learning interesting.”Guest BioKyle Scott is a powerful video journalism producer. He got his big start as a producer at NBC News, which included building his own vertical programs, such as Better, “news you can use”. He spent ten years at NBC, where he had evolving roles as a producer in digital and broadcast news, including the TODAY show, NBC Nightly News, NBC News Specials, and NBC News Digital. He is now the president of Serhant Ventures, where he is responsible for the growth and profitability of Ryan Serhant's (the famous real estate agent in NYC) digital product businesses. As far as his personal brand goes, he is an expert in all things sales. In general sales knowledge, Kyle is a public speaker and content creator. Specific to Real Estate sales, he built and scaled the digital business side of Team Serhant. With a mission to “investigate inequality with and for the people who are affected by it,” The Center for Public Integrity(CPI) is one of the oldest nonprofit investigative news organizations in the country. Over the years, their reporting has led to hundreds of law and policy changes, forced the federal and state governments to release information critical to the public interest, and held corporations to account for abuses of power.  It was also recognized with the Pulitzer Prize and countless other news publishing industry awards. CPI collaborates with other organizations, particularly local news outlets, to publish data-driven and narrative journalism that reveals the causes and effects of inequality and exposes discriminatory systems in employment, housing, health care, education, and access to democracy. Recently CPI announced the appointment of Paul Cheung as their new Chief Executive Officer. Cheung's background includes 20 years of experience in leading industry digital transformation working for NBC News Digital, The Associated Press, The Miami Herald, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as managing a multimillion dollars investment portfolio for the Knight Foundation. In this episode of E&P Reports, Publisher Mike Blinder speaks with CPI's new CEO Paul Cheung and CPI's Editor-in-Chief Matt DeRienzo about the organization's near-term plans.  They also discuss how Cheung's digital background may affect their methods to continue in their mission to fight inequality in America.

Next, we have seen a rise in alcohol use disorder, but too often medical professionals are failing to treat it. There are some medications that can help treat alcoholism, but doctors often fail to prescribe them. There are also other tools that can simply help people reduce the amount of alcohol intake. Many doctors are not specifically trained to treat addiction and usually refer people to mental health experts or send patients to rehab. Anahad O'Connor, health reporter at the NY Times, joins us for how many alcoholics do not get treatment. Finally, in the age of the pandemic workplace and hybrid working models, everything has become a meeting. We are now in the age of the never-ending check-in. Meetings have gotten shorter, but more frequent and it could be leading to meeting burnout. Going back to the office could lead to efficient, in-person check-ins, but a hybrid model could be a mess for that. Rachel Feintzeig, work and life columnist at the WSJ, joins us for more. While the majority of people who contract COVID-19 only develop mild symptoms, there are those extreme cases where the virus wreaks havoc on the body. In one such story, we are hearing of a patient in her 20s who received a double lung transplant, the first of its kind in the U.S. since the pandemic began. Tests confirmed that her lungs were beyond repair and she would not survive without a transplant. She is now recovering, but faces a long rehabilitation. Lenny Bernstein, health and medicine reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for more. Next, as calls intensify for officials to defund police departments and reallocate that money to other community services, there are some cities that can offer ideas with programs they have implemented already. One such pilot program which has led to a drop in arrests is called “RIGHT Care” in Dallas. On calls responding to mental health issues, they send out a team that includes an officer, a paramedic, and a social worker, an attempt to get people help without an arrest to violent confrontation. A woman in Georgia is crying foul saying that police detectives lied to her in order to obtain her DNA. Police then used that DNA and the relatively new investigative genetic genealogy technique to match her son to a cold case murder. Asking innocent people to voluntarily provide their DNA is known as “target testing” and when this case goes to trial in June, it could be the first to explore how police conduct investigations using genetic genealogy. Jon Schuppe, reporter for NBC News Digital, joins us for how once again the use of genetic genealogy by police is being questioned. Next, More cases of COVID-19 are popping up in the U.S. as authorities were also investigating a possible wider spread in Washington State after the first recorded death there. Vice President Mike Pence tried to put Americans at ease over the weekend, but did acknowledge we would see more cases. Joe Biden scored a huge win in South Carolina, giving him the momentum heading into Super Tuesday. Still, Bernie Sanders leads the delegate count for now. Ginger Gibson, political reporter for Reuters, joins us to break it all down. In labs and in clinical trials, scientists are seeking ways to rewrite DNA, a building block of life. Tools such as zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs), TAL effector nucleases (TALENs) and, more recently, CRISPR/Cas9 have the power to seek out and replace faulty DNA. The possibilities seem almost limitless: with the ability to edit DNA at will, researchers theoretically could wipe out malaria-causing mosquitos, make disease- and pest-proof crops without the need for pesticides, and cure genetic diseases, such as sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. Cancer is another target, with human clinical trials using CRISPR already underway, while, in separate efforts, HIV has been reportedly eliminated in mice thanks to the tool. But scientists and ethicists alike are worried about the speed at which the gene editing field is moving — and the implications of the results. In this panel, we discussed the promises and challenges presented by gene editing for individual and public health. What scientific and ethical hurdles must be overcome before tools like CRISPR and others can move safely and more widely out of the lab and into fields, farms, and hospitals This Forum event was presented jointly with NBC News Digital on May 19, 2017, as part of The Andelot Series on Current Science Controversies. Young adults and teens face significant challenges in finding quality employment in today's economy. The employment rate of teens is at its lowest point since World War II, and young adults have seen their employment rate drop by over 10 percentage points since 2000. For young workers, a lack of work experience can be a huge barrier to entering the labor market or finding a quality job. More businesses have shifted away from hiring entry-level workers and investing in their training and development, and instead prioritize job candidates with experience. For those who have found employment, low wages, part-time hours, and limited advancement opportunities are not uncommon. This conversation discusses the challenges young workers face in today's economy and ideas for expanding meaningful volunteer, on-the-job learning, and entrepreneurship opportunities to help our newest generation of workers gain the experiences and skills they need to be successful in the labor market. This event features John Bridgeland (President and CEO, Civic Enterprises), LaShauntaye Moore (Earth Conservation Corps), Henry Rock (Executive Director and Founder, City Startup Labs), Elizabeth Shuler (Secretary-Treasurer/Chief Financial Officer, AFL-CIO), and moderator Nona Willis Aronowitz (National Reporter, NBC News Digital). This event is part of the Working in America series, an ongoing discussion series hosted by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program that highlights an array of critical issues affecting low- and moderate-income workers in the United States and ideas for improving and expanding economic opportunities for working people. For more information, visit as.pn/workinginamerica. The Economic Opportunities Program advances strategies, policies, and ideas to help low- and moderate-income people thrive in a changing economy.
