This week's episode is a nod to back-to-school season when teachers can get books into the hands of kids after a summer of free days, endless video games, and probably too many popsicles. We are joined by Melissa Hart from Eugene Oregon. She is the author of 2 memoirs, a middle grade book, and most recently a great resource for teachers, librarians, and parents called 'Better with Books: 500 Diverse Books to Ignite Empathy and Encourage Self-Acceptance in Tweens and Teens'. When Melissa's tween daughter was in elementary school, she dealt with anxiety and depression, and Melissa found a way to help her through reading targeted books together, a practice called bibliotherapy which some studies suggest is effective in the treatment of some forms of depression. But the list of books in 'Better With Books' can also help a young person develop empathy and be more accepting of others who have different experiences from their own such as individuals with physical disabilities, mental health struggles, body image issues, and students from different religious backgrounds. You can find find Melissa on instagram @wildmelissahart or at her website at www.melissahart.com. Amanda and Jenn discuss middle-grade read-alouds, atmospheric novels, snarky narrators, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. Follow the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Feedback Dare to Disappoint: Growing Up in Turkey by Özge Samanci (rec'd by Jan) Notes on a Foreign Country: An American Abroad in a Post-American World by Suzy Hansen (rec'd by Sibyl) Anthony Horowitz's the Susan Ryeland series (first book: Magpie Murders) and the Hawthorne and Horowitz Mysteries (first book: The Word is Murder) (rec'd by Ann) Questions 1. My [niece] is 23 and just informed my sister, brother-in-law, and the family that [she] is transgender. (So she is now my niece). She is starting the process of taking hormones and the like. My sister was shocked and did not see it coming. She is very liberal and is coming around to the idea. I was hoping for book recommendations that would help us (especially my sister) understand what my niece has felt like being in the wrong body. In a quick search I found books involving young kids. I was hoping for books centered more on coming out as trans as a 20-something. I'm thinking maybe a biography or non-fiction. Also my whole family loves fantasy so if there's a book in that genre maybe we could read it together. -Klista 2. Love the show!   I'm looking for recommendations to read aloud to my 7 1/2 year old boy/girl twins that I will enjoy too.   We love well-written, funny middle grade books – preferably with animal characters.   They are still sensitive readers – we avoid books with any violence and try to avoid orphaned children or those with not great parents.   We're not scared of long books or intricate language.   Books we've loved (and read over and over) include: The True Blue Scouts of Sugarman Swamp  The Very Very Far North & it's sequel Winnie the Pooh Collected Stories Books we've liked a lot:  Flora & Ulysses  Ruby Lu Brave & True Gooseberry Park Books that I liked but they didn't: Wild Robot Books they love but I'm not as into:  Humphrey series Mrs Piggle Wiggle & Missy Piggle Wiggle We've read most books by Roald Dahl & most age appropriate ones by Kate DiCamillo. They are still too nervous to start Harry Potter. Thanks! -Marisa 3. Hi Jenn and Amanda! I'm finally coming back to Get Booked now that I can read again! (baby girl took all my free time hihi) In the last couple of months, I realised that I love atmospheric books, even if the plot is weak or nonexistent. Some other books I loved are Erin Morgenstern books (both!), The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and Piranesi.  Do you have other recommendations like it? If it's mixed with greek mythology it's even better. Thanks a lot! PS: love from Canada. -Emilie 4. I'd love recommendations for books set in or about Bogota, Colombia. Preferably, something like Chanel Cleeton's books about Cuba that help to understand the history and current impacts or nonfiction about the history. Any genre is fine! -Tracey 5. Two of my favorite books/series I read this year have been “A Deadly Education” by Naomi Novik and “The Murderbot Diaries” by Martha Wells. On the surface they might seem kind of different, but they both had such a great narrative voice, with the right amount of sarcasm/snark/humor, and a completely lovable main character, and they left me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Also, my favorite genres are Fantasy and Sci Fi, so these were perfect. I'm so sad I have to wait until more comes out from these authors. Please tell me what I can read while I'm waiting! Thank you! -Lauren 6. I recently read Lost Roses and seriously loved A Gentleman in Moscow before that.   I've also just marathoned The Last Csars on Netflix — and I haven't had my fill!   Can you recommend some historical fiction set in late 19th, early 20th century Russia that will help me get my next Russian nobility fix?  Thank you! -Emily 7. Hello there – Trigger Warning: So this is a tough one since it deals with a sensitive topic – suicide. I'm looking for a book (fiction or non-fiction I suppose, YA or Adult) that deals with how to cope when a friend/family member attempts suicide BUT does not succeed/commit. I find that most books about suicide are dealing with the aftermath of someone's death, but what happens if they didn't die? No one ever seems to talk about that. A recommendation for this would be very helpful, as this past year has been rough and I'd like someone else's perspective of coping with this kind of situation. Sorry this one is a bit of a downer, but important given the need for mental health awareness. Thank you. -Sam Books Discussed Fairest by Meredith Talusan (tw: racism) Sorted by Jackson Bird Bright Lines by Tanwi Nandini Islam The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate Where The Mountain Meets The Moon by Grace Lin Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vasquez, transl. by Anne McLean Fruit of the Drunken Tree by Ingrid Rojas Contreras (tw: rape & other violence towards women, harm to children including death, panic attacks & PTSD) Velocity Weapon by Megan E. I can always count on my husband, a huge sci-fi and fantasy reader to keep me up to date with some of the newest and most exciting authors in that genre. And when one of them is from our home state of Kentucky, you can be doubly sure Carrie and I will quickly ask for an interview. Our guest this week, Ashley Blooms, grew up in rural Kentucky, was a John Grisham Writing Fellow at the University of Mississippi and worked for Tor.com, an online magazine that published a wide range of sci- fi/fantasy short stories, commentary, and pop culture. Her debut novel, Every Bone a Prayer, was published last month, has been recommended by NPR and Buzzfeed and has received praise from some of my favorite authors like Silas House and Alix Harrow. Ashley wants to make a space in Appalachian literature for more fantastical stories and not only the literary realism that is usually that trademark of the subgenre. As a survivor of trauma and abuse in her own life, Ashley has created the 10-year-old protagonist, Misty, with unique sensory gifts that help explain what trauma feels like, how it changes a person, and how to move forward beyond it. Ashley talks to us about why the Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine made her want to tell stories of her own, how she uses trigger warnings to give control back to the reader, and why she doesn't categorize her book as magical realism even though it combines reality with fantastical elements. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Goosebumps series by R. L. Stine 2- What You are Getting Wrong About Appalachia by Elizabeth Catte 3- Every Bone a Prayer by Ashley Blooms 4- The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate 5- The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate 6- Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate 7- Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse 8- The True Story of Lyndie B. Una semana especial para nosotros porque alcanzamos otra meta, nuestro episodio #25 en inglés.

A special week for us as we hit another milestone, 25 episodes recorded in English. Similar to what we did in the Spanish version, we invited our beloved producer and engineer Nihar Moodi to join us. After our quick run through the UK Singles Chart and #newmusicfriday (1:50), we kicked things off by talking about the return of the NFL, especially because there was a lot of anticipation to Tom Brady's debut with the Buccaneers and the New England Patriots with Cam Newton as its starting QB (6:15). Thereafter, Nihar jumped into the conversation to chat about a movie he chose, Disney's original The One and Only Ivan (18:03). Finally, we stayed in the movie world but shifted towards the music scoring to discuss the life and work of Oscar-winning film and TV composer Ludwig Göransson (32:43) – @ludwiggoransson (Instagram & Twitter) Hosts: Guilherme Canineo and Lilia Iza Guest: Nihar Moodi

The theme of this week's episode is talent. Talent comes in many forms. Some animals have it, some people don't, and some people just want a chance to show off their talent to the world. In week's episode, Kenny, Arnaz, and Del, chose three movies where talent lies at its core. First on deck, is a children's book come to life about a Gorilla who's artistic talent could save them all. Next, a young and talented singer will do anything to get her big break, even though the night is riddled with desperate people who's lives will intertwine in one fantastic evening at the Disco. Finally, a young woman who's talent lies in rhymes, teams up an ex military officer and a rogue cop to track down the source of a drug that grants the user instant super powers. Using their patented 3P rating system of "Play, Pass, Pause" they'll decide if these movies hit the mark or fall flat. Our guest this week, Ellen Birkett Morris, has an affection for small things. She says she was born prematurely and was terribly small at birth. She wonders if this is where her fascination with beautiful things coming in small packages began. Ellen is the author of a book of poetry and a new collection of short stories called Lost Girls. What readers may notice about her stories is that though they are small in length, they are powerful in meaning. Each story focuses on a passing moment in the lives of the girls and women she writes about. Ellen says she loves dipping in and out of a person's story to find the small snippet of time that packs an emotional punch. Lost Girls has been receiving critical praise from such places as the Southern Review of Books, Alabama Public Radio, and numerous book bloggers and reviewers including the Modern Mrs. Darcy blog. Ellen talks to us about why reading her favorite books as a girl formed her idea that to be a writer you have to be a little like a spy, how the #MeToo movement helped shape the final form her stories collection would take, and why the superstore Target carrying her book left her a little gobsmacked. Books Mentioned in this Episode: 1- Harriet The Spy by Louise Fitzhugh 2- James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl 3- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl 4- Arabel's Raven by Joan Aiken 5- Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout 6- A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan 7- Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach 8- Stiff: The Curious Lives of Cadavers by Mary Roach 9- Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex by Mary Roach 10- Lake Life by David James Poissant 11- Tell The Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt 12- The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate 13- The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate 14- Pax by Sara Pennypacker 15- American Ghost: A Family's Haunted Past in the Desert Southwest by Hannah Nordhaus 16- Brooklyn by Colm Tolbein 17- Norah Webster by Colm Tolbein

Celebrating 10,000 downloads of my podcast! Thank you again to everyone who listens and follows along, love you all long time. I made some eclectic beats. I also made some boss moves with my invention and learning to deal with people tactfully which is new for me hahaha. Got into some prickly situations but I think I dealt with them well. Listen to find out. I'm also getting some counseling and I hope those of you in need do too, it helped tremendously. I also tried to watch the Disney movie The One and Only Ivan which was rudely interrupted by, well find out and see how tactfully (NOT) I dealt with this situation. I got way too much make-up and there is a bit more coming but hopefully not much more after that. Make-up I received this week came from Marena Beauty, Glamlite, L.A. Girls, Glow by Michelle Mura, bh cosmetics and Melt Cosmetics. I also got a little confused with some make-up claiming that the bh cosmetics came in the Melt box. They didn't I just put everything in there to keep them together. So the bh stuff came from bh and the Melt Cosmetics came from Melt. ooops. The One and Only Ivan is a new Disney film about a 400-pound silverback gorilla called Ivan. He lives in a suburban shopping mall with other animals where they perform in a circus owned by Mack, played by Bryan Cranston. The film is a hybrid of live action and CGI and features the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren and Chaka Khan. We speak to the film's director Thea Sharrock. 40 years since Willy Russell wrote Educating Rita Stephen Tompkinson stars in an open air production at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. Novelist Patrick Gale reviews. How dangerous is singing at a time of Covid-19? Declan Costello, Consultant Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon and an accomplished tenor, has been leading UK research to assess the risks. He joins Front Row to share the results. David Mitchell said of his recent novel Utopia Avenue – about a band - that writing about music is impossible. Former concert violinist now poet Fiona Sampson, novelist and one time cellist Patrick Gale and writer and teacher Jeffrey Boakye, whose book Hold Tight explored grime’s cultural impact, reflect on the premise that writing about music is – as the saying goes - like dancing about architecture. What made them take up the challenge in their different writing forms? Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Hannah Robins
