In 2020, he started the Martech Weekly, a newsletter covering where the industry is going and why. Unlike big tech giants—Google, Amazon, Meta and others—who spread their resources and attention over various types of AI technologies, OpenAI chose a distinct path. They concentrated all their efforts on building transformative generative models like GPT-3 and GPT-4, which set the groundwork for the success of ChatGPT.Juan suggested that OpenAI's edge lies in their extreme focus, patience, and funding. Established as a Silicon Valley tech company, OpenAI was backed by tech tycoons like Elon Musk and Microsoft, as well as some of the world's largest venture capital firms. However, OpenAI's goal differed. They weren't trying to distribute AI across various services and products. Instead, they strived to create something unique and powerful—a tool that could manipulate language with an unprecedented level of precision.Juan further highlighted how OpenAI's technology feels “magical” compared to competitors. For instance, Google's BERT, although an impressive model, doesn't meet the same level of accuracy as ChatGPT. Moreover, it ‘hallucinates'—generates incorrect or nonsensical outputs—significantly more often than ChatGPT.Juan also reminded us of the chatbot craze of 2016, which, despite the hype, resulted in less-than-stellar customer experiences. Fast forward to today, the launch of GPT-based models has reinvigorated the chatbot space, breathing new life into the industry. The key difference? An AI agent that can actually provide intelligent, useful responses.Takeaway: OpenAI's specific concentration on creating large, high-quality language models, backed by extreme patience and funding, was pivotal in their success story. Their dedication to a niche allowed them to develop an AI that is more accurate and less likely to hallucinate than its competitors. This focus transformed the realm of chat interfaces, redefining the future of AI agents and encouraging a fresh wave of startups to build on this advanced technology.The Adoption Race: Comparing ChatGPT and Snapchat's AI Tools Juan's analysis of the rapid spread of ChatGPT brought fascinating insights. He cited how ChatGPT became one of the fastest-growing apps globally, reaching a million users in merely five days. This impressive rate outpaced even Instagram and TikTok's growth, both of which took weeks to months to reach the same number of users. He attributed this meteoric rise to the simple yet brilliant user experience, which only required users to create an account and start chatting.However, Juan posed an interesting counter-argument, comparing ChatGPT's growth with the newly launched AI tool by Snapchat—Snap AI. Despite being on the market for only two months, Snap AI already boasts 125 million users and over 10 billion messages sent. It reached 100 million users faster than ChatGPT, achieving the feat in just two months compared to ChatGPT's four to five months.Juan speculated on the factors driving Snap AI's rapid growth, posing two possibilities. One might be the timing—Snap AI could be riding the wave of excitement and acceptance generated by GPT-based technology. Another potential factor could be a generational shift, with younger users flocking to the more AI-enhanced environments provided by platforms like Snapchat.Takeaway: While ChatGPT has been a massive success, becoming one of the fastest-growing apps globally, other AI tools, like Snap AI, are rising quickly in the adoption race. It is a reminder that, in the ever-evolving AI space, being first to market doesn't always mean you'll be the fastest-growing or most widely adopted solution.The Metaverse, AI and the Hype Cycle: A Critical AnalysisJuan expressed his concerns about the hype cycle surrounding emerging technologies like AI, the metaverse, and web 3.0. He opined that such hype cycles often lead to exhaustion, especially among senior individuals who are tired of constant pitches for the “next big thing.”Juan cited an example where he was at a conference and representatives from Meta and an advertising agency were zealously promoting the metaverse. According to him, they were pushing marketers to prepare for the metaverse, without critically analyzing why it should be included in their marketing strategies in the first place.Juan also expressed disappointment in certain consultancy companies for their uncritical acceptance of Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the metaverse. McKinsey, Accenture, and Bloomberg were among those criticized by Juan for their generous predictions of the metaverse's economic impact, without rigorous analysis of the feasibility and practical implementation of this new trend.Contrasting this with the iPhone, Juan pointed out that it took five years for the iPhone to reach mass consumer market penetration, despite it being recognized as one of the most significant shifts in consumer experiences, software development, and mobile technology. Thus, according to Juan, hype without actual products often leads to a dead end.Juan drew parallels between the hype cycle and trading Pokemon cards phenomenon among young people, explaining that interest in such things peaks feverishly for a short period and then fizzles out (but sometimes comes back years later haha). However, Juan's outlook on generative AI (Gen AI) was different. Unlike other trends, Gen AI is not just a promise or a dream; it's a functional product with tangible utility that people can use today. Takeaway: Hype cycles are a common phenomenon in the technology sector. However, it's crucial to differentiate between hype and genuine transformative potential. According to Juan, while many trends emerge and fade without substantial product backing, generative AI stands out as a functional, usable reality today, differentiating it from the likes of the metaverse and web 3.0.Discerning the Transformative from the Hype in MartechIn the midst of all the noise and hype in the world of marketing technology, Juan offered a profound perspective. The tech landscape is indeed inundated with individuals and companies promoting their courses or products. However, Juan emphasized the importance of dissecting the hype to understand the genuinely transformative impact of a new technology or trend.He compared the situation to a car accident on the highway. Humans are innately curious, and if something interesting is happening, it's in our nature to slow down and look. That's exactly how hype works. It's easy to get sucked into the fervor, especially if everyone else seems to be focusing on it. However, he cautioned listeners to critically analyze these situations, despite the allure.Juan discussed two key elements that usually indicate whether a trend is worth paying attention to or not: Platform Shift: He noted that many impactful trends have a device shift or platform shift inherent in them. From mainframes to personal computers, fiber optic cables to the internet, and smartphones to wearables, these shifts serve as a cornerstone of the transformative power of technology. The same can be said for marketing, where tangible devices intermediate most of what we do. Growth and Adoption: The next factor Juan emphasized is the significance of hard growth numbers. True adoption by the masses is a reliable testament to a technology's potential for lasting influence. To illustrate this, he mentioned ChatGPT that despite its speedy growth, its real value can be witnessed when it's used by the broadest spectrum of users, including those who are not necessarily tech-savvy. Juan also warned against misinterpreting growth based on financial speculation as an indicator of actual usage and value. Drawing an example from Web 3.0, he pointed out that many companies that showed impressive growth were primarily fuelled by financial speculation, rather than real utility.To conclude, Juan suggested a simple yet effective question for those caught in the hype of a new trend: does it genuinely help people? If a technology makes lives better, alleviates suffering, or creates real and tangible economic opportunity, it has the potential to be truly transformative. In an era where fear is already high, tapping into existing societal apprehensions is a highly effective means of gaining attention and traction. Juan then dove into the question of dehumanization—a term that, historically, has been associated with severe societal injustices and atrocities. He reminded us that extreme forms of dehumanization have led to horrors such as those witnessed in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union's early days. In those instances, people were reduced to mere labor, devalued, or even treated as less than human. While the application of AI in today's world is nowhere near these atrocities, Juan urged us to consider a new form of dehumanization brought about by Gen AI. He highlighted that, increasingly, we are interacting with AI that can mimic human conversation so convincingly that it feels like we're talking with a person. This phenomenon is already being monetized by influencers who create AI models of themselves and sell subscriptions to these digital replicas. In a twist of irony, they are willingly dehumanizing themselves for financial gain.The key danger, as Juan pointed out, is that we are on the cusp of dehumanizing ourselves. We risk automating away the elements that make us distinctly human—our creativity, our ingenuity, and our spirit. From writing to creating images, videos, and music, to engaging in meaningful conversations and lifelong learning, these activities enrich our lives. The more we delegate these tasks to AI, the more we strip away the human element.Juan's insight was a sobering reminder of the dangers of uncritical acceptance of AI's supposed benefits. In the rush to embrace AI's efficiency and potential cost savings, we must not lose sight of what makes us human and what truly matters in our lives.Takeaway: The balance between leveraging AI for efficiency gains and preserving human elements in our work and society is a delicate one. Juan highlighted that while AI tools such as Owler and MidJourney can assist in creativity, they also pose a risk of making certain skills “impotent”. He asked, “Does it enhance our creativity, or does it make us impotent?”A trip to Barcelona had him reflect on the dichotomy between the old and new sections of the city. The old city, built for people, contrasted sharply with the newer, car-focused areas. Drawing a parallel with how AI is reshaping creativity, he sees the possibility of two groups of creatives emerging. One group would fully embrace AI to scale their work, while the other would insist on maintaining human authenticity in their creative process.Juan made it clear that the debate surrounding AI and creativity is not about replacement but transformation. He expressed a word of caution, suggesting that while AI could create amazing things, the danger lies in becoming overly reliant on these tools and potentially losing the ability to create original ideas. Have you heard of the 'Great Resignation' or the 'Big Quit'? It is an informal name for the widespread trend of a significant number of workers leaving their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. While most news articles are covering the 'Great Resignation' in relation to the United States, the problem is happening on a global level and it is thought to be the result of many different factors, notably employees dissatisfaction with current working conditions and post Covid reassessment of the lack of career and home life integration.   This month in the United States, according to Guardian 2.9% of the workforce quit their jobs. Nearly 1.2 million jobs were open in the UK in the most recent quarter, with 15 of 18 sectors reporting record numbers. People cite all kinds of reasons for quitting. They want a better work-life balance, they want more challenges, better conditions, more meaning. For employees who are left behind and those who want to make the move but are worried they are trading one job they hate for another it is critical to understand how we can love the jobs we are in. Joining us on today's episode is Dr Kathryn Owler, a happiness at workplace coach, who will share her research findings and advice for how to enjoy your job and have a meaningful career.

What does happiness at work actually mean ? Can we build it consciously ? .  Kathryn and I discuss the much debated and often elusive subject of happiness at Work. We delve into the world of searching for the ‘dream job' and what that actually means, how educational systems concentrate often on improving weaknesses rather than focusing on strengths. We explore the different elements of happiness and particularly post COVID the question of "what actually brings me joy ?" The shift from profit to purpose, and stop the busyness to create the time to 'be' as well as the time to 'do' at work are highlighted as Kathryn shares her insights, research and experience on this subject. The main insights you will get from this episode are : Wellbeing, fun and happiness need to be understood to offer practical support and help for people on their transformation journey; COVID made the topic more high-profile as people asked themselves: what brings me joy? Searching for and achieving a ‘dream job' can be disillusioning after a while - is it the grand reward we long yearned for? It follows on from the conditioning of work hard = good results = job satisfaction = success = work harder. It is a relatively new phenomenon to challenge this, and it brings with it profound learning, often retrospective regrets, disappointment, fear, but also relief and the possibility of something better. Such an epiphany often instils a desire to share it and help others. Happiness (at work) is an elusive, multi-layered, aspirational and complex concept. Most commonly it is achieved through a sense of purpose, challenge and competence; patterns from research suggest men enjoy ‘mastering' a challenge (action-based), whereas women enjoy competence more (reflective). There is a simple methodology for attaining happiness at work based essentially on the questions: What do I want? How do I make the change?  Acknowledge ‘stuckness' and be open to different possibilities, which is emotional, confrontational and scary. Keep going. Be positive. Reflect our core values. Enact straight away. Engage in deep learning. Craft the perfect job. Seek challenge/competence (inside or outside work). Explore our assumptions. Negotiate. Set boundaries. Break free of the cycle of self-limiting beliefs to gain power and control. Communicate at work. Face our fears. Look back at past goals to draw strength. Plan – where have we come from and how do we go forward? Feel more confident. Do what we do well, well! Feel good about ourselves. Make practical decisions about our own happiness. Mindfully put into practice what we learn and consolidate it; many educational systems focus on improving weaknesses rather than focusing on strengths. A lightbulb moment can make us impatient to bring about change but we must recognise the feelings, pause and think - society pushes us to constantly ‘do' but in reality, less is more.  We should all have a sense of hope, take small steps to improve things all the time and constantly come back to what's important, step off the hamster wheel and ‘tweak things'. COVID has shown that change is possible, and quickly, so it is always worth pushing for it.

Intro.(1:22) - Start of interview.(1:51) - Jeff's "origin story". He grew up in Dayton, Ohio. He went to Carnegie Mellon University for undergrad "to study engineering and play football." He graduated with electrical and computer engineering degrees, and took off to Silicon Valley. He first worked in the semiconductor industry with Altera. He later got into financial services, first with Gehrson Lehrman Group, then with SecondMarket (early player in the secondary markets for private shares, later acquired by Nasdaq) and Owler (crowdsourcing data on private companies). He joined Nasdaq in 2014 to help launch the Nasdaq Private Market. In 2016 he got promoted to run the listings team for Nasdaq in the west coast.(4:39) - Jeff's take on Nasdaq's role and vision: "In the last 5-6 years our approach has been to create a lifecycle approach to supporting our corporate clients: 1) Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center (early stage), 2) Nasdaq Private Market (as companies scale and need to provide liquidity to their shareholders), 3) Listings Business (for companies going public), 4) Once companies are public, we offer a number of products and services to empower their IR, corporate governance and ESG disclosure practices." Beyond this work with corporate clients, Nasdaq also operates exchanges in the US and EU, it has an investment intelligence business (indexes, sell market data) and it's a technology provider to capital markets (including market surveillance technology, AML/KYC solutions, and others).(7:38) - Jeff's take on growth of IPOs during the pandemic (~250 operating companies have gone public in Nasdaq this year) and SPACs (there have been 495 IPOs in 2021 raising ~$138bn). "As a private company you've never had more options and better access to capital and liquidity." Private companies can raise: 1) Late stage venture capital rounds ("there seems to be $100m rounds everyday"), 2) IPOs, 3) SPACs and 4) Direct listings.(10:13) - His take on the impact of government actions on the economy (and how they impact markets). The acceleration of digital transformation during COVID-19.(12:39) - His take on the Nasdaq Private Market (facilitated ~$36 billion in transaction volume for ~500+ private companies) and why they decided to spin-off NPM as s stand-alone company, receiving investments from a group of banks including Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and SVB Financial Group.(16:05) - The "stay private or go public" decision per Jeff: "It all boils down to the company's goals and objectives in different phases of its lifecycle." Companies go public for a variety of reasons, but some of the primary ones are: 1) to raise capital, 2) to provide liquidity, 3) brand enhancement (prestige) of being a  public company, and 4) to leverage its equity as an acquisition currency.(18:53) - His take on regulatory pressures on private markets (particularly from the SEC, as explained by Commissioner Lee's speech on "Going Dark" and problematic aspects of private markets).(23:24) - On the rise of retail investing and "meme stocks". Zero commissions took down the cost of trading, it made trading more accessible to people. The advent and impact of social media (from social message boards to Reddit). The dissemination of information has changed the nature of trading. The SEC report on equity and options market structure conditions (October 2021).(26:08) - On growth of ESG. "It all starts with the generational shift that is going on, from Baby Boomers to Millennials." "The new generation thinks beyond the bottom line." "People and investors are focusing on non-financial metrics for public companies (more and better disclosures)."(29:52) - History and nature of Nasdaq's Boardroom Diversity Rule (approved by the SEC on August 6, 2021). Standard disclosure matrix and minimum diversity standards (gender and minorities) with long phaseout periods. "We received 200+ comment letters to the rule, 80% was positive. From the 20% that was negative comments, 10% said that we shouldn't implement the rule, and the other 10% said we didn't go far enough."(34:10) - His take on crypto and blockchain technology. "We were thrilled to welcome Coinbase to Nasdaq via their direct listing." "It's really an interesting and dynamic time for the crypto markets." "It's still early innings in terms of the regulatory framework (from SEC and CFTC)." (36:16) - His favorite books:How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (1936)Genius Makers by Cade Metz (2021)(37:05) - His mentor Bruce Aust (retired Vice Chairman of Nasdaq)(38:29) - On Nasdaq's approach to technology in the boardroom: their board portal Nasdaq Boardvantage, critical for security. The Nasdaq Center for Board Excellence "offers the latest governance insights and actionable intelligence for board members and executives (board evaluations and questionnaires". The topic of ESG is very relevant for boards, and they have an advisory team that consults with boards on ESG, Nasdaq OneReport (to simplify the process of ESG data capture, engagement, oversight, and disclosure).(40:05) - An unusual or absurd habit that he loves: From the book Extreme Ownership (Jocko Willing and Leif Babin): "The first thing I do in the morning is to make my bed." This way everyday you start by accomplishing something.Jeff Thomas is a Senior Vice President of Nasdaq's Corporate Services business unit. Based in San Francisco, Jeff oversees Nasdaq's new Listings and Capital Markets businesses. He also oversees business development and relationship management for Nasdaq's listed companies and Investor Relations Solutions' clients in the Western United States. This agreement is reported to be a part of Meltwater's growth strategy, involving investments and acquisitions in the social media segment.Samaaro, an innovative virtual event platform provider, has raised $125,000 in an angel funding round. The participants include Richa Kar, Founder of Zivame; Naman Gupta, AVP of Swiggy; and Kedar Gavane, Senior VP of Comscore; and other senior executives from Google, Flipkart, Swiggy, Adda52, and High Radius.The funds will be used to scale the product, increase the team through key hires, and expand the company's market reach.

Spain was also the founder, chairman and CEO of HighBeam Research, which he started in 2002 and sold to Cengage Learning in December, 2008. He also co-founded and is CEO of Newser, a news curation and summarization service with an audience of seven million readers each month. Spain serves as a board member of Owler a Silicon Valley-based company information service that is using crowd sourcing to revolutionize data collection, quality and delivery. He is also on the Board of a Chicago-based Occasion, an event scheduling platform for smaller merchants. Since she started her career as a Peace Corps volunteer, she has been all about doing good. Her company, Kuli Kuli, which sells products with moringa (don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of it; most people haven’t) sourced from West Africa. It takes optimism to face all of the challenges associated with selling a new food; she shares three secrets to her success. Curtis tells the story of how she started eating moringa as a way to supplement her diet after her Peace Corp stint left her malnourished. Later, she would launch Kuli Kuli to provide others with the health benefits and to support and grow the women’s cooperatives in the tropics where she sources the moringa. Kuli Kuli’s products are carried in more than 800 retail outlets, including Whole Foods Markets, Sprouts and Kroger KR -0.47%, according to Curtis. Owler estimates Kuli Kuli 2015 revenues at approximately $1 million. Curtis says, the company’s moringa is sourced from women-owned cooperatives in Ghana, where they have already planted over 100,000 moringa trees. In Haiti, working with Whole Foods, the Clinton Foundation and the Haitian Smallholder Farmers Alliance, Kuli Kuli is working to create a Moringa enterprise that will help to reforest the nearly completely deforested country. Today he explains what predictive campaigns are, and how they are at the forefront of the latest in the evolution of marketing. Predictive campaigns are the latest way for marketers to gather customer and prospect data. They are based on predictive analytics, predictive fit and intent data. Predictive analytics creates a broader profile of a person, Mintigo calls this the customer DNA. An example of this is let's say you're a tech company and you're selling software. What you know about your customers is fairly light: you know their name, title, email and and what they've bought from you, how much they paid and how long ago they bought. That's not a lot of data and it doesn't go very deep into the person. Predictive analytics would gather thousands of data points about that person and add to their profile, to help give you get a pattern of who they really are. Some examples would be: the job title of who they are hiring, what types of tech are they using, what certifications do they have (legal, regulatory, tech). You'd also find out how much they are spending on Google ads and other PPC ads, and what are their geographic trends. You have a broader, richer look at your customer. Predictive fit helps you understand those thousands of data points to find out why you are doing well with certain types of customers, and who else in your database fits that mold. It also helps you understand how to have a sales conversation with that prospect. John goes on to explain what intent data is, how it's useful as well as hi best piece of advice for marketers on this episode of Grow My Revenue.
