Episode 1140 This is a revisit of one of the most powerful and honest conversations we've ever had on The Powerful Man Show. In this episode, Tim Matthews sits down with Mark Smith and Gary Lester for a raw conversation about the lasting impact of sexual abuse on men, relationships, shame, identity, and emotional connection. Together, they share personal stories about what it was like to carry these experiences in silence for years and how that silence affected their confidence, relationships, intimacy, and sense of self. They talk openly about the shame many men carry, the fear of being judged or rejected, and why so many men never tell anyone what happened to them. The conversation also explores how unresolved pain can show up through emotional shutdown, self-sabotage, addiction, disconnection, workaholism, and struggles in relationships. More importantly, this episode is about what happens when men stop hiding. You'll hear how opening up in safe environments helped each of them begin healing, rebuild trust, create deeper relationships, and finally stop carrying the weight alone. This conversation is honest, grounded, and an important reminder that healing starts when men realize they are not alone. If you've ever struggled with shame, emotional disconnection, feeling broken, or carrying parts of your story in silence, this episode will hit home. Get the free training here: https://thepowerfulman.com/scales You'll learn why so many men feel disconnected in their relationships, what creates emotional distance over time, and practical steps you can take to rebuild connection, trust, and intimacy.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US reporter Luke Tress joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Following Thursday's demonstration at The New York Times building regarding the Nicholas Kristof column about alleged systematic sexual abuse of Palestinian inmates in Israel, Tress notes that protestors discussed concerns about slanted coverage that can instigate violence against Jews or Israel-related targets. As New York's New School student government tries to defund its local Hillel chapter, accusing it of violent international crimes following recent student trips to Israel, Tress discusses the dispute and the trend toward colleges attempting to exclude chapters of the international Jewish student organization. An anti-Israel protest held in Midwood, a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, showed the ability to get more personal and ugly than those held at public spaces, reports Tress. The presence of swastika graffiti has become more prevalent around New York City, notes Tress, and comes from both the far left, who want to demonize Israel and from far-right pro-Nazi movements. On this week's Neutralizing Workplace Racism 05/14/26, we address the unique stressors impacting non-white workers at all career stages—from young professionals launching their careers to seasoned employees fighting to maintain or advance their positions. We also examine a growing trend: why a rising number of both White and non-white teenagers are shunning college, citing the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence coupled with widespread hiring decreases across multiple industries. Gus emphasizes the critical importance of non-white parents having honest, direct conversations with their offspring about the future of labor under the global System of White Supremacy. Additionally, we review a letter from a non-white listener regarding sexual abuse in the workplace. We will offer practical, counter-racist suggestions focused on putting an immediate halt to any form of sexual aggression at work. Filing a police report about sexual abuse on the job is often the best course of action. We also discuss another potential incident of black-on-black violence in the workplace. #TheCOWS17Years INVEST in The COWS – [http://paypal.me/TheCOWS](http://paypal.me/TheCOWS) Cash App: [https://cash.app/$TheCOWS](https://cash.app/$TheCOWS) CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#
Trauma changes far more than a single moment in time. It can alter the way people see themselves, how they experience intimacy, and how safe they feel in relationships long after the abuse has ended. In this deeply important episode of The D Shift, Mardi Winder speaks with psychotherapist Scott Stolarick about the often unspoken connection between trauma, sexual abuse, shame, and relational dynamics. With more than three decades of clinical experience, Scott shares how trauma frequently creates ripple effects that extend into every area of a person's life, including self-worth, trust, emotional safety, and future relationships. He explains why survivors are often left feeling responsible for what happened to them and how those beliefs can quietly shape the way they move through the world. The conversation also explores the unique complexity of sexual abuse within committed relationships and marriages, including coercive control and the emotional barriers that prevent many people from speaking openly about what they have experienced. Scott discusses how trauma can become deeply embedded when it goes untreated and why unresolved experiences often continue resurfacing through anxiety, emotional shutdown, hypervigilance, or chronic shame.Rather than focusing solely on retelling painful stories, this episode examines the importance of trauma-informed care and approaches such as EMDR therapy that help individuals process traumatic experiences in a healthier and more integrated way. Scott explains how healing is not about erasing the past, but about helping people stop defining themselves by what happened to them.Throughout the discussion, one message becomes very clear. Trauma may become part of someone's story, but it does not have to become their identity. The episode focuses on the issues of:• Trauma often impacts far more than one specific event and can affect every area of life and relationships• Survivors of sexual abuse frequently struggle with shame and misplaced feelings of responsibility• Abuse within committed relationships and marriages is real and often goes unspoken• Unresolved trauma can surface through anxiety, emotional shutdown, hypervigilance, and difficulty trusting others• Trauma-informed therapy approaches such as EMDR can help people process painful experiences differently• Healing does not require forgetting the past, but learning not to be defined by itAbout the Guest:Scott Stolarick is a licensed, trauma-informed psychotherapist who has been practicing in the state of Illinois for 33 years. Years before Joseph Duggar's arrest on child molestation charges, his convicted sex offender brother, Josh, made unsettling warnings in jailhouse emails to his family, RadarOnline.com can exclusively reveal. “I can guarantee you if they ever were falsely accused of a crime (no matter how outrageous the accusation) I would have been there to at least show love and reach out to them in compassion!” he wrote in a May 2022 email to his father, Jim Bob, 60. '” He continued, “But somehow some of you have forgot, or you have willfully chosen not to reach out to your own brother who is IN JAIL!”Josh also implored his family to support Anna and their seven children—Mackynzie, Michael, Marcus, Meredith, Mason, Maryella, and Madyson—while he serves his time, adding a peculiar warning: “Who's to say you won't be next? The visuals in this movie are stunning, uncomfortable, emotional. There is very little dialogue. On the technical side everything about this film is a valuable lesson. All of it. It may not be for everyone, but it is definitely a movie you will not forget if you watch it. Listen up and decide for yourself. Laura Barringer Sadly, we've recognized over the past decade or so that healthy churches for women are not as prevalent as we'd like to believe. Too often such churches have abused, dismissed and devalued women who have much to give them. I am Kelley Mathews and I am here today with Laura Barringer. She is the coauthor with her father, Scott McKnight, of several books. But today we're going to talk about tov, A Church Called Tov. I'm going to give it a little bit of publicity right here. So welcome, Laura. Thank you for taking your time with us today. Laura >> Thank you for having me. It's an honor to be with you. I'm grateful to be here and to meet you and hear a little bit more, too, about your ministry for women. Kelley >> Oh, yes. This is you'll hear more about it as we go along. But we do a lot of these interviews, really, and just provide resources for support. I would say primarily women leaders in the church. But obviously when they're online, anybody can access them. So we will hopefully add this resource for looking at churches and what they can do and why they can do—make take real, tangible steps towards being safe and healthy churches, particularly for women. And so both of your books, the other one is called Pivot, but where and that's a newer one, but we're going to stick with the older one. And it was very foundational, I think, to the conversation over the last, what, seven, eight years, maybe? I forgot exactly when it came out. Laura >> 2020. The fall of 2020. Kelley >> Only five. Oh, wow. OK. Laura >> Yeah. Kelley >> Yeah. Well, that's you know, Covid does a lot to make time disappear, I think. Laura >> It makes everything it makes everything fuzzy. Kelley >> Oh, goodness. Well, why did you partner with your father? I mean, we if anyone doesn't know Dr. McKnight is a New Testament scholar and writer and professor. And why did you guys partner up to write this book? Laura >> I wanted him to write the book. So that was the original plan. The book started as a personal story for us. In 2018, in March of 2018, a story broke up here. I live just outside of Chicago. The Chicago Tribune is the major newspaper here in the city. And it was a story about our former church, Willow Creek, our former pastor, Bill Hybels. It was a story about accusations, sexual accusations made against him by a number of women, most of whom somebody in our family knew. And it was a very disorienting, I speak of it now, but at the time it was very disorienting. It was disorienting because the church was saying the women were lying and the women were saying the church was lying.

In this episode, we're having a conversation that many people avoid—but one that needs to be talked about more openly. Sibling sexual abuse is often misunderstood, minimized, or never acknowledged at all. Because of that, many individuals carry the impact of these experiences into adulthood without language, support, or validation. In this conversation, we explore what sibling sexual abuse actually is, why it's so often overlooked, and how it can affect someone emotionally, psychologically, and within their relationships over time. We also talk about what healing can begin to look like—especially when someone is just starting to make sense of their experience. This episode is not easy, but it is important. If this is something that resonates with you, you're not alone—and support is available. In this episode, we discuss: What sibling sexual abuse is and why it's often misunderstood How families and systems may minimize or overlook these experiences The long-term emotional and psychological impact The role of shame, silence, and confusion What healing and support can look like Purchase on Amazon- Sibiling Sexual Abuse About Brad: Brad Watts is a licensed professional counselor and certified sex offender treatment provider in Knoxville, TN, specializing in treatment of survivors of complex trauma, as well as individuals and families where sibling sexual abuse has occurred. Today's Headlines: Less than 24 hours after Trump declared the Iran ceasefire "a huge day for world peace," Iran accused the U.S. of violating three of the ten agreed points, only four ships passed through the Strait versus the pre-war average of 100 a day, and Iran is charging $2 million per ship in tolls payable in crypto or Chinese yuan. Meanwhile, at least 50 brand new Polymarket accounts — created Tuesday morning — placed extremely well-timed bets before Trump posted the ceasefire announcement, with one bet placed 12 minutes before the post. Those accounts made between tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Peace talks are still scheduled for Pakistan on Saturday with JD Vance leading, assuming Israel doesn't blow it up first — literally. Iran's foreign minister warned talks could be cancelled if Israeli strikes in Lebanon continue. Trump met with NATO chief Mark Rutte and continued bashing the alliance, while the Wall Street Journal reported the new U.S. strategy is to punish NATO countries deemed unhelpful during the Iran war by moving troops out of their bases — the same bases that deter Russian aggression across Europe. In other news, Democrats swept two special elections Tuesday: liberals won Wisconsin's Supreme Court race by 20 points — a 21-point swing from 2024 — giving them a 5-2 majority through at least 2030. Clay Fuller won MTG's old Georgia seat by far less than he should have in one of the reddest districts in the state. California's Supreme Court halted Sheriff Chad Bianco's ballot seizure scheme, though he's already floating doing it again in the June primary. For Epstein files updates, Pam Bondi is trying to skip her April 14th congressional testimony by claiming she's no longer AG. The House Oversight Committee isn't buying it. Howard Lutnick — Epstein's former next-door neighbor — is scheduled for a closed-door interview May 6th, and Bill Gates on June 10th. And finally, Sam Altman's sister refiled a civil sexual abuse lawsuit against him in Missouri federal court, and Ronan Farrow published an extensive New Yorker investigation into Altman, with sources describing him as a habitual liar. Trigger Warning: This episode discusses childhood sexual abuse. We share this with care, but please listen at your own pace and take care of yourself.Deep breath, friends. This is one of THOSE episodes - the kind that feels a little heavy, a little scary, but is incredibly important, because the tools here could change your kid's life. In this episode, I (Deena) am sharing my own experience with sexual abuse as a child. Not to scare you, but to give you something I didn't have back then: Clear, practical tools to help keep your kids safer.Because the uncomfortable reality is that sexual abuse doesn't usually look like a stranger in a dark alley. It often happens between kids, between peers or people you know, in familiar places. And most kids don't tell, because they're confused, don't have the language, or think they'll get in trouble. So instead of fear, we're focusing on power. This episode is your “bing bang boom - here's exactly what to do” guide. You'll walk away with:Concrete, simple tools you can start using TODAYThe exact words + scripts to teach body safety in a way that feels natural (not awkward or scary)A clear way to explain private parts, safe vs unsafe touch, and boundariesHow to teach your kid to say no, get out, and tell someoneHow to build a “safety team” so your child always has trusted adultsAnd how to create a home where your child knows, “I can tell my parent anything, and they will help me.”Body safety isn't about one, big scary talk. It's about small, everyday conversations that build kids who know their body is theirs, trust their gut, use their voice, and feel safe coming to you, no matter what. You can give your child tools, language, and confidence that dramatically increase their safety. So take a deep breath - we're doing this together, and it'll be worth it, I promise. This episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. J.R. Stokes Returns!Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know even more about J.R. Stokes. J.R.'s first appearance on the show was March 24, 2025. In that episode, we did the whole life story thing; so we don't really do that this time. In this episode, we chat about what he has been up to since we last spoke. J.R. has just released his second feature film. It is called 'Beautiful, Pam' and can be seen on his You Tube channel FOR FREE. We talk about what this film is about, who he made it for, and what he hopes to get from making and releasing it. I grill him on WHY it is free, just like his previous film 'Edge X'. J.R. explains the plot of the film (no spoilers), and we discuss some of the actors involved, and how they were an integral part of the story telling process. We also cover some of his inspirations, and why he thanks them specifically in the closing credits of this new feature. Lastly, I argue with him about how this film should be seen. There is an offer in here where you can have the physical DVD sent to you FOR FREE. Follow J.R. and go watch this film!

This is not a story about something that happened once. This is a story about what the body carries when the mind cannot. In this episode, Aspen Michael shares his lived experience of memory returning in midlife—after decades of success, stability, and a life that, by all appearances, was fully intact. At 52, everything changed. What had been held outside of awareness began to surface through the body, through collapse, through fragments that refused to stay buried. What follows is not a linear narrative, but a reconstruction of self. Aspen speaks to the reality of sexual abuse and institutional harm within the Catholic Church—not as theory, not as commentary, but as something he lived through, survived, and later pursued through legal channels. He describes what it means to have memory come back in pieces, to navigate dissociation, to lose the structure of a life that once made sense, and to rebuild without a clear map. This conversation does not rush to resolution. It moves through what it actually takes to face something the mind once protected you from—the disorientation, the physical toll, the unraveling of identity, and the long, deliberate process of putting yourself back together. There is no performance here. No clean arc. Only a man speaking from the place where healing becomes a daily decision. We talk about the nervous system, about fragmentation, about what it means to reclaim your body after it has held what you could not name. We talk about support, about the difference between surviving and actually healing, and about the quiet, often invisible work required to come back to yourself. And underneath all of it, there is something else: Not redemption. Not resolution. But a refusal to disappear.Aspen Michael is a former Chief Technology Officer turned trauma survivor, advocate, speaker. and healer also focused on his own healing, memory recovery, and nervous system restoration. Today, Aspen shares his lived experience to help others understand complex trauma, dissociation, and the long path back to wholeness. His work centers on the power of daily healing practices, supportive community, and reclaiming personal agency. In addition to his advocacy, Aspen is also a jewelry designer and founder of energyoftribe.com, where he creates handcrafted pieces infused with intention, grounding energy, and symbolic meaning. His designs draw from natural stones, numerology, and personal resonance—offering wearable reminders of presence, strength, and self-connection. In this episode of Timesuck, we're heading to New Zealand to explore Gloriavale - a so-called “Heaven on Earth” founded by charismatic preacher Neville Cooper, where obedience to God somehow turned into obedience to one very, VERY creepy man. What began as a utopian Christian commune devolved into total control, forced labor, a lot of creepy sexual stuff., and generations raised to believe submission was salvation. It's Eden… if Eden had dress codes, unpaid work, and a cult leader who absolutely should not have been anywhere near anyone's bedroom.Merch and more: www.badmagicproductions.com Timesuck Discord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious PrivateFacebook Group?
