The turmoil in the economy and stock market has created massive turmoil not only in Fiat currencies, but also in Cryptocurrency. As such, Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs are bracing for tough times. Today at Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we are here to make sense of it all with Sequoia Partner Michelle Bailhe. As you know, Sequoia is one of the giants of venture tech in Silicon Valley, and I have known and worked with the folks at Sequoia for over 20 years. Today, we get to hear from one of their partners and learn what advice Sequoia is currently giving to their entrepreneurs and much more. Michelle Bailhe and I go deep on what's really going on with the crypto markets as they face their first meaningful downturn. Why bad times tend to yield great entrepreneurs and startups, and what we can learn from the 1600s. Michelle Bailhe on the crypto market The conversation starts off on the topic of the crypto markets. Michelle shares that she thinks crypto is in a very interesting moment, for a lot of reasons. While crypto has its own problems, on top of the current economic conditions, Michelle thinks it can weather the situation. “Crypto has been through a lot of bear and bull markets, or winters and summers. And so there's a sense of, well this is winter, and we have been here before. We know what it's like, and we know how to build through it.” – Michelle Bailhe Though according to Michelle, it's worth noting that what lies in the future may be way different than before. For one thing, valuation will be unlike before when crypto was on the rise, and investors are savvier than before. So it's all a matter of how crypto will adapt and integrate itself into the market in the long run. Crypto's first downturn When asked when the first downturn was for crypto, Michelle explains that crypto has had its ups and downs over the years. As to why it went unnoticed, it was mostly due to the issues being with crypto itself, and not due to external factors. As for whether Covid had anything to do with it, 2020 was actually an explosion of new cryptos due to people taking an interest in investing and growing their current funds. Though it wasn't all for the better. Much like the tech boom in 2000, where there was a hunger for new tech, but not enough focus on quality. So a lot of new cryptocurrencies were minted, only to collapse on themselves in a few months. What's different this 2022 is that crypto, along with other markets, is going through a global macro issue. As it becomes more ingrained in other sectors, companies, and markets, it also incurs the problems those systems have. That will be the fundamental difference between the winters before and the upcoming one now. Hedging against Inflation There has been a prevailing thought that crypto would be a good hedge against inflation, particularly around the time when Bitcoin has more or less stabilized. While Michelle thinks of it as a novel idea and has heard the arguments for it, crypto has never been created and traded as a hedge against inflation. “Bitcoin has not at all traded as a hedge against inflation. It has been extremely correlated to technology stocks, and it looks much more like an unprofitable technology stock, partly because money people are still wrapping their heads around how to think about it: Do I think about it like equity? Do I think about it like a commodity? What are the demand and supply drivers?” – Michelle Bailhe As for whether you should invest in crypto or not, Michelle Bailhe gives her thought on the matter. During this episode of Tech Qualified, Tristan Pelligrino and Justin Brown chat with Emily Negrin Director of Global Communication and Marketing at GEOSYS. This interview focuses on Emily’s past work experience and how she transitioned from the B2B side of the food business to the agricultural world. Emily takes a deeper dive into how she helped implement marketing strategies for a 30-year old company battling a number of new agtech startups. Highlights Emily starts the interview by providing some insight into her past experiences prior to joining GEOSYS - she started her career with the consumer side of public relations and worked with several agencies in the Minneapolis area.   She decided to change her career from the B2B side of the food business into the world of agriculture and “Agtech.” Emily mentions how she worked for a few years at Land O’Lakes - in their wind field business and was introduced to GEOSYS from that experience.  GEOSYS is actually an older company with over thirty years of experience in the agricultural technology industry.  The company uses satellite imagery to monitor how crops are growing across the globe and this data is used for all of the businesses “around a farmer” which include insurance companies, bankers, commodity traders and more. Emily came on board at GEOSYS about four years ago and helped them start their marketing and communications efforts. GEOSYS found that a variety of Silicon Valley startups surfaced within agtech and a stronger focus on marketing and communications became inevitable in order to differentiate the company from new players. Emily talks about the difference between agency work and being on the corporate side of marketing and communications. GEOSYS doesn’t sell anything directly to farmers and is focused on being a trusted advisor to those who are working directly with farmers. Emily talks through an earlier initiative, which was helping business people understand the market so they could ask better questions and make better decisions themselves - it wasn’t about promoting anything around GEOSYS. Emily describes the overarching custom journey which is very long and requires a lot of information along the way. GEOSYS has several different levels of service, some solutions are completely custom and involve a lengthy implementation process. The company uses social heavily to distribute content and educate the market around the types of services it provides to farmers and the entire community. GEOSYS believes that partnership efforts and open and honest communications within the team and regular communications are important for company growth. She talks about how they are using content in the form of blog posts and interactive presentations (produced using Microsoft Sway). She mentions that they have done promotional posts through LinkedIn and have seen success in using the LinkedIn platform to reach people. GEOSYS has a dedicated business development team that's in charge of sales and working with prospects and customers.  They also have a customer success team and are looking at ways to grow and help troubleshoot issues facing customers. Key Points Emily talks about some focus areas moving forward, “...we're also starting to take a focus of how can we use some of the data and insights that we have gained in our 30 plus years of operation to help people make some better decisions about sustainable agriculture and….where can we have a greater impact and help them best utilize their resources so that they can continue to do what they love. And a lot of times that's farming.” Emily mentions how the technology surrounding the farmer has changed quite a bit, “You know, when you think...today's farmer has more technology in the cab of their tractor than the first spaceship that launched to the moon. In Zeiten von Corona müssen wir viele Themen neu denken. Eins davon: Bildung! Ich habe das große Glück, dass ich meine Arbeit sehr gut aus dem Home Office machen kann und noch keine schulpflichtigen Kinder habe. Viele andere müssen aber gerade sehr kreativ werden, um den Schulunterricht für ihre Kinder zu ersetzen. Eine große Herausforderung, aber auch eine enorme Gelegenheit Dinge auszuprobieren, die vor ein paar Monate noch undenkbar gewesen wären.Mit meinem heutigen Gesprächspartner Kelly Smith rede ich genau darüber. Er sagt, dass unser schulisches Bildungssystem sich seit 1850 in der Hauptsache kaum verändert hat: 30 mehr oder weniger interessierte Schüler sitzen in einem Raum, gucken nach vorne und kriegen das Wissen von einem Lehrer übermittelt. Deshalb hat er Prenda gegründet. Prenda ist ein vom Y-Combinator finanziertes Start-Up, das sogenannte Microschools überall in den USA aufbaut. Was Prenda genau macht, welches pädagogische Konzept er verfolgt, was ihn überhaupt dazu befähigt die Verantwortung für die Bildung von Tausenden Kindern zu übernehmen, und wie er die Methoden des Silicon Valley auf das Schulwesen überträgt, erfährst du in dieser Folge von Digitale Optimisten.  Hier sind die 3 Dinge, die ich aus dem Gespräch gelernt habe: Die Power eines starken Mission Statements: Kelly hat ein ganz einfaches Mission Statement: Empower Learners. Zwei Worte, die aber alles sagen was er erreichen will. Daraus zieht er seine direkten Ziele und auch die zentralen Werte seines Konzepts. Ich glaube, dass klare Ziele ein häufig vernachlässigter Teil der Business-Welt sind. Ziele helfen enorm dabei, zu sagen welche Wege man verfolgt und v.a. Warum. Ich liebe das Sprichwort: Wenn du nicht weiß zu welchem Hafen du segelst, dann ist kein Wind günstig. Und genau deshalb sind Mission Statements wie das von Kelly so wichtig.Leadership heißt nicht die meiste Expertise zu haben oder der Schlauste zu sein, meist ist es die Fähigkeit “psychological safety” zu schaffen, in der jeder sich ausprobieren kann. Google hat vor einiger Zeit untersucht, was gewisse Teams erfolgreicher macht als andere. Das Ergebnis war, dass nicht diejenigen Teams am besten waren, die die meiste Erfahrung im Job oder die höchsten wissenschaftlichen Abschlüsse hatten, sondern diejenigen, die als Team am besten funktioniert haben: diese Teams haben es geschafft, dass jeder seine Ideen aussprechen und ausprobieren konnte. Das Konzept - wenn man eine eigene Idee hat diese auch auszusprechen - heißt Psychological Safety. Prenda hat genau das erlebt - nicht die studieren Informatiker waren die besten Lehrer, sondern die Bibliothekarinnen, die noch nie einen Code-Zeile selber geschrieben haben, aber jedem Kind die Freiräume gegeben haben, sich zu entfalten.Tools um Startups zu skalieren können auch in anderen Bereichen erfolgreich sein, man sollte sie aber smart einsetzen. Die meisten Silicon Valley Startups konzentrieren sich meist auf eine Sache: Wachstum. D.h., wie können wir so schnell wie möglich Nutzer gewinnen, in neue Märkte expandieren und schneller sein als die Wettbewerber. Wenn man über so etwas spricht wie Bildung, dann sind aber plötzlich ganz andere Sachen gefragt. Wie kann ich Vertrauen schaffen, dass ein Elternteil mir die Bildung ihres Kindes anvertraut? Kelly lehnt daher ein paar Weisheiten des Silicon Valley ab - z.B. verzichtet er auf allzu aggressive Sales-Taktiken, aber ein paar nutzt er sehr wohl. Insbesondere etwas schneller zu sein als eigentlich noch komfortabel wäre, zwingt ihn selbst in eine demütige Rolle als Lernender, die er ja mit seinem Startup an seine Schüler vermitteln will Viel Spaß mit diesem Gespräch über eines der größten Probleme für einen der nächsten Zukunftsmärkte.
