Jungle Queens, Scary Dreams, and Adulterous Schemes. It's August 17th, 1984, and the boys are taking in SHEENA, DREAMSCAPE, and THE WOMAN IN RED for some edgy PG-13 violence & gore and some wholesome PG full-frontal-nudity. Grab your leg warmers and Members Only jackets, because the boys are heading back to the ‘80s for Episode 58 of Opening Weekend!Ahh, the mid-1980s. What would Ronald Reagan's (or Eddie Albert's, for that matter) America have been without the efforts of Hulk Hogan to capture the WWF Championship, the Ghostbusters to capture Slimer, or Fred Berman to capture anything the Playboy Channel had on in the middle of the night (without his Dad knowing)? While Jason has wholesome family time at the beach with Grandpa, and Dan watches hour after hour of sweaty men doing the Camel Clutch, sick perversions abound, both on Fred's TV screen, and on America's movie screens. Gene Wilder and Joe Bologna strive to get their bologna into any women they're not married to; Dennis Quaid dreams of a giant snake-man and strives to get his giant snake, man, into Kate Capshaw; and Tanya Roberts swings from long jungle vines as Ted Wass strives to get his long jungle vine out from under his sarong. Or is that merely his sarong-knot? Or is it all just Fred's 80s-Playboy-channel-addled imagination? A surprise call from some beloved “Pod Squad” members may provide some clarification. Or not. Yeah, probably not. Where's the Beef? Why, it's in Ted Wass' pants, of course! Gag me with a spoon, it's the totally tubular Episode 58 of Opening Weekend!
While Jason & Lauren were locked in a room asking each other 100 questions each, they got onto the topic of pregnancy scares and dates gone wrong. Love you guys x
Jason McDonald is an author, teacher, and consultant focused on personal branding, SEO, social media marketing, and Google ads. He has an undergraduate degree from Harvard, a master's and a Ph.D. from Berkeley, and he teaches at Stanford. He also has many bestselling books on digital marketing topics available on Amazon. In today's episode, we're going to discuss why we should create digital products and publish a book on Amazon. Jason's Journey Jason studied at Berkeley for six years while working towards his Ph.D. For two of those years, he lived in Europe and wrote his dissertation on economic policy in Eastern Europe. Once he graduated, he began working with a computer reseller start-up to grow international sales, becoming familiar with the internet for the first time. His first experience with the internet inspired him to start an email newsletter for design engineers which got him into SEO. About 10 years later, he discovered he was good at teaching. He had a friend who encouraged him to teach a class, and that's when Jason began teaching SEO in San Francisco. He enjoyed it so much he eventually started teaching for Stanford and also began publishing. Building a Skill Set The ability to publish books on Amazon has been a huge blessing in Jason's career. While Jason was teaching a class at Stanford, he thought it would be a good idea to try writing a book on SEO. He already had the knowledge and just needed to learn the skills to get it published. He put in the time and research and learned how to publish a book on Amazon and get it set up on Kindle and CreateSpace. He published his book on Amazon which started to generate around $30,000 a year in royalty revenue and established his name in his industry. “There are people who think you're born with a certain skill, like ‘I'm born and I'm able to do the math.' I really think that's a terrible attitude. A better attitude is, ‘I want to have this skill, and I'm going to learn how to do this skill. I'm going to invest in the skill and get good at this skill.' I didn't know that much about how to publish a book on Amazon at the time, but I really dug into it. . . . I created that skill set by just saying, ‘I'm going to do this,'” Jason said. Jason didn't have the skill set to publish a book, so he developed it. If we want to be an expert at something, we have to put in the work. It's not a matter of being born with or without a certain skill, it's a matter of drive and determination. “You have to decide you want the skill set,” Jason said. “That's how you want to think about your skills in life. . . . It really hurts people when they think, ‘Gosh, I could never do that.' That's self-defeating.” Are we willing to pay the price? Are we willing to put in the time and resources it takes to develop a new skill? We have the ability to pick what we want to be an expert in, we just have to pay the price. It's often said that if we put in 10,000 hours into something, we can become one of the world's leading experts in it. One of the best skill sets we can learn is creating a digital product. While we may not have the skills naturally to create a digital product, we can put in the time and effort to learn how and develop those skills. There is an old saying that goes, “It doesn't matter how much milk you spill as long as you don't lose your cow.” As entrepreneurs, there will often be “spillage” and wasteful decisions as we start trying to learn something new. However, our mistakes don't matter as much if we keep trying. What we see as failure may not have a huge impact on the bigger picture or an impact on our revenue. Publishing a Book on Amazon When I asked Jason what his best monetization secret is, he said it is to create a digital product. For him, that digital product was his books. “If you have a special kind of knowledge or if you're an expert in ‘x' . . . you should write a book,” Jason said. “ If you can create a digital product, which is what books are these days, you can create a passive income stream around that product.” Books not only provide a passive income stream, but they also build our credibility. Writing a book shows our customers our knowledge. As we really become an expert in our specific field, we can write a book to establish our name. However, we need to make sure we write a book with a purpose. We shouldn't publish a digital book just to show off our knowledge; we need to write a book that will provide value to our audience. For example, college students will look for books on financial aid, budgeting, easy home-cooked meals, relationship advice, and more. We need to write a book that answers a question for someone or solves a problem for them. A new parent may purchase a dozen books on baby names and how to raise a kid. If we can answer a question or solve a problem, a book can really be a great source of revenue. Jason was able to do this with the topic of SEO. He wrote a book on what he was an expert on, answered questions and solved problems for his audience, and then made around $30,000 a year off the royalty revenues of his book. It is very common for people to turn to a book when they are trying to solve a problem. According to the Pew Research Center, the average American reads about 12 books a year. If we can make our book the #1 in its category, we have a good chance of success. “One of the things I've learned in business is you want to fish where the fish are,” Jason said. “Certain markets, like the book market, have a defined player (Amazon) where all the action is. And Amazon has made it very easy for people to publish and find books.” Amazon has a system that allows anyone to self-publish a book relatively easily. All we have to do is write it. Once we do, publishing takes less than five minutes and our book appears on Kindle stores worldwide within 48 hours (Source: Amazon). Amazon also allows us to earn up to 70% in royalty sales to customers and stay in control of our prices. Instead of going through a publisher, we can do it on our own from our homes. Amazon is a great platform to take advantage of for book publishing. “Amazon dominates the book market. It's where people go for books,” Jason said. “Think about areas where there is a defined marketplace that you can then insert yourself.” The Association of American Publishers filed a statement in 2019 with the Federal Trade Commission, saying, “A year ago, The New York Times reported that Amazon controlled 50 percent of all book distribution, but for some industry suppliers, the actual figure may be much higher, with Amazon accounting for more than 70 or 80 percent of sales.” (Source: Publishing Perspectives). We can leverage Amazon to potentially reach millions of people and get our book out there. There are currently 150 million Amazon Prime subscribers, a 50 percent increase from 100 million in April 2018 (Source: VentureBeat) and even more people use Amazon without Prime. Just because millions of people are on Amazon, that doesn't mean we have millions of people looking at our book. In 2020, there were 48.5 million books on Amazon (Source: JustPublishingAdvice). Becoming an expert in our field and answering a problem our customers are trying to solve gives us a competitive edge in this vast book market on Amazon. Another digital product that builds our credibility and can create recurring revenue is online courses. Online courses are a great way to provide value to our customers. We can share our knowledge and teach them how to do something they need help with. However, the disadvantage with online courses is that there isn't one platform that dominates that platform as Amazon does with books. Jason believes that publishing a digital book on Amazon is one of the best digital products we can use to our advantage. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Jason for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We have to decide what skill set we want and then put in the time and effort to become an expert in it. One of the best skill sets we can learn as entrepreneurs are how to create digital products. Books provide a passive income stream and build our credibility. Amazon is a great platform to take advantage of because it dominates the book market and makes publishing relatively easy. We should become an expert in our field and answer a question or solve a problem for our customers. If we can make our book the #1 in its category, we have a high chance of success. Over three years, Jason Barbato introduced, developed, and scaled a growth hacking program that generated more than $40 million of annual recurring revenue. This program became strategic and standard for more than 60 product teams. It's been recognized by the growth industry experts as best in class and enterprise level. Today, we're going to focus on how to use growth hacking to monetize a business. Growth Hacking Growth hacking encompasses strategies focused on driving growth while spending as little time and money as possible. Sean Ellis, founder, and CEO of GrowthHackers, developed the term “growth hacking” in 2010 to describe a sustainable growth approach (Source: GrowthHackers). It is a creative strategy to increase website traffic, generate leads, and optimize the marketing process. While Jason was working as an SEO consultant for EarthLink, he attracted IBM's attention with his digital marketing program. IBM called about a growth hacking role, which was the first time Jason had heard that term. Since Jason was so data-driven and focused on running tests, by their definition, he was a growth hacker, and they invited him to jump into a small team. On the team, he focused on how he could influence the buyer's journey and create loyal customers. He'd analyze the data, run tests, and review what worked and what didn't. Jason's groundbreaking moment with IBM was developing a growth hacking strategy that became extremely profitable. He started working with an IBM SaaS product, and after producing some tests, they discovered only 1% of visitors were subscribing/purchasing digitally. So, Jason and his team asked themselves, “What can we do to get the customers to buy/subscribe on their own?” He noticed that in the customer's digital journey, the pricing page only had buttons to access a free trial or subscribe for free. He thought, “When people are here to look at pricing, they might want to buy right now. We should remove some of these ‘try' buttons and replace them with ‘buy' buttons.” After moving around some of the calls to action, they increased engagement by 8% and generated $6 million from the simple experiment. The product team loved the growth hack and started applying it everywhere. They ended up creating two versions of the product and made it available in 140 countries. His hack became a global standard. Now, he's been a marketing growth consultant for more than seven years and a growth mentor and coach for two years. He currently serves as the vice president of growth at Orange Pegs, a US-based growth, and inbound marketing agency. “It's very foundational,” Jason said. “We looked at a data point, hypothesized about certain things, . . . and started to test against that. And again, it wasn't multivariate. It had sort of a cascade effect, where if you do one thing on one page, it prompts something new on another page. Now, this is just moving elements around the page. . . . I like its simplicity.” Growth hacking has become a very significant tectonic shift in the market, but what it comes to is measuring data and testing. We need to have a data-driven mindset. “Use the data to take action and run tests, and let those tests guide the moves that you make to improve and delight your customer base, and also grow and grow your business,” Jason said. Jason explained that to effectively use growth hacking to monetize a business, it all comes down to curiosity. Curiosity leads to experimentation, which leads to monetization. Curiosity Jason's top monetization secret is to be curious. In order to monetize from growth hacking, it all comes down to the foundational element of curiosity. “You have to have that curiosity,” he said. “Having curiosity, caring about your business, caring about the growth of your business, or your product, with a level of curiosity can be a moneymaker for you. Because if you are complacent, and things are sitting static, and you're just happy with the status quo . . . you may be missing out on millions because you're not creating and hypothesizing. You're not measuring.” If we are complacent, we could be missing out on a lot of opportunities for exponential growth. Change is constant, so we need to constantly adapt. If we aren't curious and looking for new ways of growth, we may miss out on increased profit. Studies have shown that curiosity leads to greater learning, engagement, and performance at work (Source: Human Resource Development Quarterly). As we are curious, we will naturally find better ways to run our businesses. “You have to put yourself in the mindset to say, ‘What if? What if this happened? What if I tried that?'” Jason said. “It could change everything. Your business could completely shift and pivot away from something you thought was good to something that's really great.” Curiosity leads to testing which leads to monetization. We have to ponder everything and once we do that, the tests will happen naturally. Experiments Once we are curious, we will be naturally motivated to look at data to perform tests and experiments. Growth hacking is all about taking the data we have collected, measuring it, and then running experiments to try and increase growth and profit. We have to have a data-driven mindset. The majority of the time, we have access to the data and information that will guide us to success. We simply need to act on it. Growth hacking is taking the information, pulling insights out, and then experimenting on it. If our experiment fails, we know what not to do. If our experiment succeeds in creating growth, we know what changes we need to make. Estimates have shown that businesses collected more customer information in 2010 than all prior years combined (Source: Harvard Business Review). Everything is focused on customer data and it is within our reach. On average, businesses receive data and metrics from 28 different sources (Deloitte Digital). We live in a data-driven world. The amount of data created by consumers doubles every two years (MIT Technology Review) and 92.3% of businesses maintain databases to host information on customers and prospects (GDMA). We need to make sure we use all the new data to our advantage. Success will depend on how we use customer data and information to find new ways to grow our business. Monetization Once we've run tests on our data, we need to look at the results and determine what new insights we have to work with. Most experiments will tell us what not to do, or what to do more of. Jason increased the profit of the IBM SaaS product simply because he applied the insights he learned from his experiments. All he did was change a couple of CTAs on the company's website. We need to follow a similar process. As we use growth hacking effectively, we can monetize our businesses. It starts with curiosity, leads to experiments, and results in monetization. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Jason for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. In today's episode we chat about getting mixed signals after a date.We have different reads on this question because Megan is much better at emotions and reading people than Jason. While Jason can understand where this guy is coming from, Megan feels it should be much more obvious and more of a gut feeling when sparks are flying. We'll get into a few other topics but ultimately we tend to agree that "just going for it" could be the best thing to do when you're not sure if someone was really that into you on your date.Enjoy the episode!

When I searched for the word "Random" in a podcast directory, there were over 50 shows, with many of them talking about "whatever." Today I'm going to share why I think this is a bad idea and how being focused has help Carey Green get 8000+ downloads per episode for his Morning Mindset Daily Christian Devotional podcast. How I've Seen Random Fail As a teacher for decades, I can say I've seen how humans are not fans of change. They like things to stay the same and be predictable. As a musician, I saw establishments that had comedy on Monday, Metal on Tuesday, Country on Wednesday.... in trying to have something for everyone, they alienated everyone as you never know what night it was. I had a dog for 14 years, and for many years all of my friends made up their own nickname. The dog heard random name after random name. Consequently, he wouldn't come when you called him as he had not connected with his actual name. The Power of the Niche On the Podcast Review Show (where you can get TWO consultants' insights for the price of one), Jason Sacco from the Ankylosing Spondylitis show shared how this podcast is attracting people who have this disease. This brings HUGE relief as many people have nobody to talk to who truly understands what it's like to have this pain-causing disease. Jaspon has a focused niche, but that doesn't stamp out all creativity. He has been trying some live roundtables and hopes to continue to grow his audience as he moves forward. While Jason would like to monetize his show, currently building the community and the lack of feeling alone is quite a bonus already. He has also been getting some press for his show. Carey Green Gets to 8600 Downloads Per Episode Carey Green hosts The Morning Mindset Daily Christian Devotional. When I hear about people with large amounts of downloads in just a few years (Carey is just under three years), I typically wonder if they had a large social following, email list, or built-in audience. In Carey's case, he had none of those. Here are some key points we covered in our interview: 20:10 Carey Green Getting 8600 Per Episode 21:43 Why Carey Started His Show 23:17 Daily Podcast Tips 24:34 Dealing With Haters 25:36 Polarizing People 25:59 Feedback From the Audience 26:58 Giving Your Audience What They Want 27:43 What Makes His Show Different 28:21 Starting a Premium Podcast 29:56 How is He Marketing His Show? 31:20 A Better Call To Action 32:05 Your Back Episodes in Stats 32:33 The One Different Thing 33:11 Teach Your Audience Your Slogan 35:43 Promoting the Show is Key 37:31 Carey Starts a Non-Profit 40:00 The Importance of Integrity What About Jordan Harbinger? Isn't His Show Filled With Random Guests? 40:54 If you listen to Jordan Harbinger's show opening, it sounds like he's just interviewing random interesting people. He mentions, "astronauts and entrepreneurs, spies in psychologists," which sounds like many random people. However, all those people are used to cover the topic of becoming a better critical thinker. You Can Have Predictable Randomness Both Carey and Jordan do something different on Friday. While this is a different format than other episodes, by doing it in a consistent, predictable fashion, the audience can adapt. Jordan has mentioned that his "Feedback Friday" episodes are top-rated, and Carey's longer Prayer episodes were built on his audience's requests. Getting Your Audience Subscribing and Returning For More When you deliver a message that the audience can identify with and say, oh, wow, that person really gets me, or I can use this information to transform myself and achieve that success. They're going to connect with you, and when they hear the call of a new episode, unlike my lovable little shi-Tzu Dudley, they are going to come running back to subscribe for more. Say his name five times...we dare you! No, we double-dog dare you to. While Jason, Michael, Freddy, Pinhead & Leatherface were miles deep into their sequels; Tony Todd's hook-wielding, bee-stinging myth of a man was stepping into arguably one of the genre's most important films. 1992's Candyman dared to discuss racism, slavery and even how the horror genre treated people of color and women alike. While we've reached the conclusion that the film still is home to problematic aspects. It's not without merit to say, it's heart was in the right place. Hot on the heels of a very popular Q+A episode, the TGN boys are back with some sad news. Due to the public health concerns surrounding the spread of COVID19, the TGN hangout slated for March 18th has been postponed. While Jason and James were very much looking forward to it, they don't want to be an active element in getting people sick. Once the risk has been minimized, the meetup will be rescheduled. Back to the episode at hand, it's a special TGN spin on the classic “what would you take to a desert island” question. From essential items to requisite booze, books, and breakfast cereal, it's a veritable how-to for being a well-prepared recluse. Stay in the mix for high-pressure final notes that looks into the history of the HeV and offers up a great list of adventure books that are just as good the second or third time as they are on the first read. If you have a question for the guys, be sure to record it as a voice memo on your phone and email the file thegreynato@gmail.com so it can be included in a future Q+A episode. Thank you to Jason for commissioning this episode. While Jason is no longer with us, he's still a part of UNspoiled! and there is another episode coming up this week with his name on it. These chapters are really intense, which is true of all of them to a degree, but this one is particularly drastic. Nassun turns a corner here and decides to kill a whole fulcrum full of orogenes because she feels they're somehow damaged. The worst part is that she feels they're damaged in the exact way that her mother is damaged, which makes her actions even more heartbreaking and brutal. Meanwhile, Essun is struggling with the lessons she's taking from Alabaster to hook the obelisks from the sky to get the moon back. It's not going awesomely, and she's frustrated, but she gets a little distracted when an evil stone-eater shows up and rips Hoa apart. Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Often times, people considering divorce fail to take their specific needs and objectives into account during the selection process in favor of a referral from a family member, friend or colleague that fails to take their specific situation into account. Additionally, they homogenize the skills and capabilities of prospective attorneys during the shopping process. In the end, this introduces the potential for mismatch into their divorce which can add cost and inefficiency. Join us for a discussion with Jason Sposeep, Partner at Schiller, DuCanto and Fleck and Collaborative Law Fellow, as we explore the basic considerations for choosing a divorce attorney. About Jason Jason authoritatively advocates for high net-worth professionals and their spouses who want fair and equitable results. Jason’s extensive background in business and finance as well as his compassion and understanding, enables him to sensibly resolve complicated divorce and custody disputes in and out of the courtroom. Jason strenuously believes in putting the children first in every divorce situation. While Jason’s experience in trying numerous complex divorce and custody matters permits him to be an assertive opponent, Jason makes every effort, when appropriate, to keep matters out of the courtroom. As a skilled negotiator having been trained in mediation and the collaborative model, Jason has the ability to successfully navigate clients through the financial and emotional aspects of their divorce. Jason is a former executive board member of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois (“CLII”). Jason uses his substantial experience in Collaborative Law to regularly educate fellow practitioners and improve upon the collaborative practice. Jason recently assisted in the redrafting and updating of the Participation Agreement used in every Collaborative divorce across the State of Illinois and played an influential role in the passing of the Illinois Supreme Court Rule 294, which directs how lawyers operate in a Collaborative Divorce. Jason is a frequent lecturer on a number of family law issues including attorney assisted mediation, Collaborative Law, trial techniques as they relate to business valuation experts, marriage and divorce planning, guardianship divorce actions on behalf of wards, prenuptial agreements, domestic violence and child custody disputes. Jason is currently a director on the Chicago Kent Alumni Board of Directors. Jason is also a founding co-chair of the Chicago Kent Young Alumni Counsel which is accountable for providing continuing education to alumni and furthering alumni relationships. We know lifestyle changes such as better nutrition, more movement, and less stress can make a big difference in our health. No one knows this better than Jason Karp, the chairman, and co-founder of Hu Kitchen and founder and CEO of HumanCo who reversed what was deemed an incurable condition through nutrition. He joined me on the mbgpodcast to talk about his transformative health journey and share what we can do today for better health. At the age of 23, Jason started having double vision, brain fog, and hair loss, and an ophthalmologist told him he would likely go blind from what was diagnosed as a degenerative corneal disease. From there, he went to another doctor that (he credits with saving his life) who tested his blood and found his cortisol levels were some of the highest he’d ever seen. He told Jason he wouldn't live until the age of 40 unless he changed what he was doing. After an elimination diet for three months where he gave up packaged food, caffeine, and alcohol paired with more exercise, much to the doctors surprise they found his degenerative eye disease had reversed. While Jason is much healthier today, he still struggles with autoimmune issues and discovered he’s sensitive to stress and doesn’t detoxify environmental toxins and chemicals in products well. “I find stress to be much more potent of an inflammatory agent than anything else, including sleep and food.” Here are four of the ways that Jason supports his mind and body and recommends to anyone struggling with health conditions or hoping to boost their health. Meet Jason Pang, serial entrepreneur and most recently co-founder of Whiff, which helps people find their perfect scent. While Jason originally thought he was going to be an Accenture lifer, he quickly got a taste of the startup life as the first employee of DivX in 2000. He joined Jordan Greenhall, Tay Nguyen, Darrius Thompson, Jerome Rota and rode it through an IPO in 2006 and up to a marketcap of $1.1 billion. Interesting tidbits: DivX was started in a General Atomics building in UTC which was also in the same building as MP3.com and even after two IPOs and being acquired multiple times, there’s still original team members at the company 18 years later. Jason eventually moved on to found multiple companies with both wins and some failures. His latest venture Whiff.com with Paul Tran brings together a few different industries, including consumer packaged goods, online market influencer utilization, and taps into the biotech space in attempting to create customized scent sequencing for each person. Jason is also a prolific mentor and advisor to both startup founders and to students alike. At any given time, you’ll just as much find him speaking to a class as much as he is building companies. Some of Jason’s faves: Fave beer: Belching Beaver in San Marcos and Viewpoint Brewery in Del Mar Fave coffee: Philz Fave tacos: Las Brisas and albondigas soup Find Jason on LinkedIn and be sure to check out Whiff.com

Here are the show notes for this episode: Mike and Chris will be bringing the hypnotic storm to the UK this November. We start at the UK Hypnosis Convention and we then move onto a master class in Suffolk. We’re interviewing Jason later than expected because Mike had car problems on our originally scheduled date. But he did NOT die in a fiery crash and his car is fixed! Jason first got interested in hypnosis the same way Chris did! What hooked us on hypnosis: “Things are happening that are different than normal”. How did Jason get into hypnotherapy after first becoming interested in stage hypnosis? It’s all due to a horrible eBay accident. Mike discusses the immense overlap between stage hypnosis and hypnosis for therapy. In the early years, Jason wondered whether he should hide his hypnotherapy interests from his stage hypnosis audiences and vice-versa. He soon realized the error of his thinking. Jason used to work as a stage manager. Perhaps this is how he became so freaking well organized! Hypnosis seemed like a more “pure” way of doing magic versus carrying around a deck of cards, or other props. Effects of the mind … Mike used to do a huge stage show with pyrotechnics done by “Lunatech”, but Chris hears “Lunatics”, which sounds way funnier. Jason prompts Mike to call him a “special forces hypnotist” based on his approach to hypnosis sessions. As the “hypnosis market guinea pig” Jason won’t teach a marketing strategy that he hasn’t actually used himself. If you want to learn from someone who really knows his stuff, follow Jason! Mike and Jason discuss how much a theatrical background plays into doing therapy work with clients. While Jason takes marketing concepts and applies them to the field of hypnosis, Chris and Mike have a podcast that takes concepts from hypnosis and brings them to the lay person to apply in daily life. How the heck did Jason become such an outstanding public speaker? (because he really, REALLY is) Every scene has a reason. Every story has a purpose. Speaking is a theatrical performance! Listen to Jason explain why he would record the audio of his stage hypnosis shows and listen to it while driving home after the show. Looking to become an exceptional speaker? Map out the entire performance first. Know exactly what experience you want the audience to have. Mike shares a cool tip on how he lights up the audience’s receptive neural pathways just as he starts a corporate keynote. What can you do if your introduction completely FAILS to resonate with you audience? Mike shares a cool story from a friend. Chris points out that Jason doesn’t just change the behaviour of his clients. He helps them build a new identity where the problem behaviour doesn’t fit anymore. This fits in with Dilts’ Logical Levels from Podcast 74 Jason’s best advice for hypnotists: Harness your specialty. Embrace what you’re good at. Example: Most hypnotists are crappy website designers. Want help learning the marketing side of hypnosis? Check out “Hypnotic Business Systems” and make sure to use promo code MMH to save 10% (the code also works at his hypnosis training site, Hypnotic Workers) Jason brilliantly explains how he duplicates himself via online webinars so that he doesn’t constantly have to repeat the same information to every new client. He looks for ways to just do something once. This concept is pure gold, folks. Pay close attention. We help people! Telephones and text messaging seem like necessary evils at best, but for many small businesses they're required. You just need to figure out how to use them effectively--and set rules so that they aren't abused. While Jason leaves the phone off the hook, David describes his trial of Google Voice and ultimate decision to use a live receptionist service.

We talked with Jason Garbis this week about Software Defined Perimeter (SDP). Ever thought about going completely without needing a VPN? Do you think I just made a crazy suggestion and am off my medications? Google has been doing it for years, and organizations like the Cloud Security Alliance are expecting this to be the next big tech innovation. So much so, that they are already drafting version 2 of the SDP guidelines. So after talking with a friend of mine about how they were trying to implement it, he suggested talking to Jason, since he was on the steering committee for it. While Jason does work for a company that sells this solution, our discussion with him is very vendor agnostic, and he even discusses an open source version of SDP that you could implement or test out as a PoC (details in show notes below). This is a great topic to stay on top of, as one day, your CTO/CIO or manager will come by and ask about the feasibility of implementing this, especially if your company assets are cloud based... Lithespeed's Jason Hall understands that keeping employees engaged and happy is important. Toward this end many organizations have reward systems: bonuses, shares, company lunches, even massages and boxed chocolates (thanks, Google!). But Jason highlights for us the fact that these rewards are doled out according to a hierarchical meritocracy: someone, whether a VP or senior manager, is deciding whether and who deserves recognition. While Jason thinks this is great and he has no beef with a meritocracy approach per se, but it doesn't reinforce team-based collaboration. Jason shares his experience at Lithespeed where they experimented with different rewards/recognition programs. First they tried a token- or penny-based system before landing on their "Recognize at Lithespeed" program -- a peer-based system that, Jason says, "hits the nail on the head": real-time recognitions that people email to each other rather than waiting til the end of the quarter, for example, which was the previous token-based model. On this week’s episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Dr. Jason Silvernail joins me for Part 1 of Ask Jason Anything! Dr. Silvernail is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who was selected for the prestigious Army-Baylor Doctoral Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy at Fort Sam Houston for subspecialty training and graduated in 2010, earning him both a Doctor of Science degree from Baylor University and Fellow status in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. A clinician and researcher, he has published clinical commentaries and original research in the medical literature including the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Manual Therapy, and the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy. In this show, we discuss: -How manual therapy is integrated into the biopsychosocial framework -Rethinking the goals of your initial evaluation -Strengths and limitations of a pain science perspective on patient care -The roadmap to a military physical therapy career -Jason’s hiring process for seasoned professionals and new graduates -And so much more! While Jason is a proponent for making advances in research, he also believes that there is more to gain from the existing literature to improve patient care. He challenges clinicians and researchers to “actually start using the evidence we already have. What can we do to build processes in our health systems to help us better integrate existing research evidence and clinical practice to make it relevant to clinicians, to make it relevant to payers, and to make it popular and effective for patients so patients start asking for it… What can we do to integrate and better use what we already know?” Jason believes that there is a positive outlook for physical therapy and that the profession can fill a desired role in the current marketplace. He states, “Patients are looking for a low cost, low risk, non-invasive approach that they can have quick access to that is an appropriate match to their goals, that is matched to exactly what they want, and you can get what you want when you want it. There are not too many people in medicine that are offering something close to that, but PT is one of them.“ Utilizing the biopsychosocial framework for patient care has proven to be effective for Jason in his career. He advices, “One of the things I say the most to PT students is this job is half psychology and I used to think that my job was the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions. That’s actually not my job. I am in the business of behavior change. And if you’re a PT, you’re in the business of behavior change too. And the sooner you understand that and the sooner you start to work on your ability to help engage others for behavior change, the more success you will have in your profession. “ For more about Jason: Jason Silvernail DPT, DSc, FAAOMPT qualified with a Master of Physical Therapy degree from the University Of Scranton Pennsylvania in 1997, and he has been in practice as a physical therapist since then. Overview: Jason Hand and I discuss the importance of moving away from a blame-oriented culture and towards a learning culture. Jason talks about the importance of understanding how cognitive biases influence decision-making and the need to understand this when conducting post mortems. Jason talks about balancing efficiency and thoroughness, and the importance of using blame-free post mortems as a means for learning. While Jason comes from a tech world, this talk has application to a variety of sectors, including high-risk industrial work. Jason Hand’s Biography: DevOps Evangelist at VictorOps, organizer of DevOpsDays - Rockies, author of the books O’Reilly’s “ChatOps: Managing Operations from Group Chat" as well as "ChatOps for Dummies”. Jason is a co-host of “Community Pulse” (a podcast on building community in tech), and organizer of a number of DevOps related events in the Denver/Boulder area. A frequent speaker at DevOps events around the country, Jason enjoys talking to audiences large and small on a variety of technical and non-technical subjects such as Modern Incident Management, Learning From Failure, Cognitive Bias, ChatOps, and building communities. Show Notes: Information Technology is no longer just a cost center and needs to be seen as a way for companies to innovate and become market leaders. Trying to innovate and experiencing failure can be an important way to learn. Post-Mortems are an important tool for learning and organizations should be transparent about learning and sharing that information about safety with others in the industry. Root cause analysis may uncover something that broke, and that can be fixed, but it may result in a lack of innovation in complex systems unless the organization tries to avoid a check the box mentality for a quick-fix and actually learn and improve the system. After negative events occur, when investigators use the word “why” that can sometimes imply “who” and it is important to avoid blame during post-mortem events, yet organizations often seek blame and accountability from a single individual. Accountability means to “give an account of what took place” or describe what too place. Accountability is not the same as responsibility. DevOps works to create high-functioning teams rather than silo’d teams. When silo’ing goes away organizations can become more innovative and other industries may learn a great deal from how DevOps is working to overcome silo’ing and a lack of cooperation towards system goals. Theory of Constraints may be used to help understand system goals and reduce silos in organizations. Season 2, Episode 42 – This week, the boys are headin’ to Texas. Jason tends to travel quite a bit for work.
