The podcast enters a stretch of top-notch episodes with William Malone's visually distinct and genuinely creepy installment. Throughout the season, the boys have made plenty of jokes at the expense of directors like William Malone. “Really, he's a master of horror?” Like feardotcom and House on Haunted Hill, The Fair Haired Child proves that William Malone definitely deserves that distinction.  With strange flashbacks and an occult mystery plot, the episode has some of the most arresting images and performances of the whole series. Despite some Nu Metal styling and a sometimes exposition-heavy script, this is one episode that could hopefully encourage viewers to give its director's output a second look. Created by Mick Garris, Masters of Horror was a two-season series on Showtime that challenged genre legends to create an hour-long horror film. Follow along as Bennett and Jim are forced to spend no more than 20 minutes discussing each episode from the first season of the series or face a room full of poisonous gas.

House on Haunted Hill was a huge failure with critics, but at 50th in the 1999 box office, and having made back its budget, it was a reasonable commercial success. It opened number one during Halloween weekend, likely finding an audience in moviegoers eager for anything spooky (and it is pretty spooky...) A remake of William Castle's 1959 film starring Vincent Price, this House on Haunted Hill was directed by William Malone with a written by Dick Beebe, who also penned Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2) with effects by the legendary Greg Nicotero and Robert Kurtzmann. With a delightfully loopy, hammy performance from Geoffrey Rush and pretty great supporting cast who all understood the assignment, House on Haunted Hill is an imperfect but genuinely enjoyable horror thrill ride. It's also a favorite of our guest Stephanie Gagnon, host of the horror book podcast Books in the Freezer, who joined us way back in Round 1 for The 6th Sense and rejoins us to talk mustaches, Chris Kattan, bad endings, and which is the best Scream movie. The Masters of Horror. These are the genre filmmakers whose work have made generations of filmgoers not only fall in love with horror but have left a permanent imprint on movie history and popular culture. One need only look at small selection of the greatest hits of these filmmakers to see their undeniable impact. Of course, the title of “Master of Horror” can be open to interpretation but the official title came from when horror-hero filmmaker and genre ambassador Mick Garris began bringing together a group of the genres most iconic filmmakers for dinners at various Los Angeles restaurants. It was one of the masters himself, Guillermo del Toro, who created title when wishing a nearby table a happy birthday. “Happy birthday from the Masters of Horror!” Some of the regular participants and holders of the “Master” title include but are not limited to John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Stuart Gordon, John Landis, Joe Dante, Don Coscarelli, Larry Cohen and Tom Holland. Multiple other “masters' attended but this group and our guest today seem to be the core “masters”. In this episode we will be sitting down with one of the true titans of terror, William Malone. William talks with us on his early love of the “Creature from the Black Lagoon” and “Forbidden Planet” and how he almost did remakes for both, his beginnings at famed mask creator Don Post Studio where he sculpted the original Michael Myers mask, demystifying the incredibly talented but let's say troubled actor Klaus Kinski and why making movies is both revealing and embarrassing. William Malone's films share the same quality of most great directors' bodies of work in that their style and vibe carry the unique qualities that are the signature of the person behind the camera. You know a William Malone movie when you see it! Whether it's his early monster movies “Scared to death” or “Creature” or his now classic remake of “House on Haunted Hill” or the nerve frying “Feardotcom”, William continues to be one of the genres sharpest eyes and clearest voices.  So, let's a grab a seat at the table and listen in with Master of Horror William Malone! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Remakes and reimagining's get a bad rap. Though there have been many lousy ones (people still puzzle over Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake) there's also many that are now classics.   John Carpenter's "The Thing", David Cronenberg's "The Fly", Philip Kaufman's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", Gore Verbinski's "The Ring, William Malone's "House on Haunted Hill" and Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead". All inspired takes on classic films. What makes these examples work whereas others (here's looking at you Elm street remake) feel like tired retreads? It seems like it has a lot to do with a filmmaker who has a new lens to see the story through. Carpenter didn't just rely on the special effects (though they sure are special) for his take of “The Thing”, Cronenberg wasn't content to just rely on a cooler looking fly, Kaufman knew it would take more than bigger body snatcher crowds. You get where we're going with this. There's a connection between the filmmaker and the material for all these films that's evident in the movies themselves.  Our guest today can be added to the list of filmmakers whose reimagining works because there is a clear connection between the filmmaker and the world he's creating. PLOT TWIST… he's reimagining his own movie. In 2014, a film about a rookie cop's night at a soon-to-be-shuttered police station that becomes a descent into hell became a sleeper hit. The film was “Last Shift” and it has just been reimagined in the form of the new film “Malum” by its creator, our guest in this episode, writer/director Anthony DiBlasi. When I asked him about returning to the world he created with “Last Shift”, Anthony told me “I think the remakes that work are the ones that are really treated like reimaginings. They took the core of what was cool with the original and expanded on it. Almost as if it were a sequel to the original. What Aliens did for Alien. That's what we wanted to do with Malum. Explore what we couldn't in the first one because of resources, but also dive deeper into a mythology we barely touched on in the original. Build on the elements that work while also improving on the ones that didn't.” Anthony also delves into the years he worked closely with horror icon Clive Barker, how dealing with MPAA interference and studio meddling is basically trial by fire and adapting one of Barker's stories for his film “Dread”. Our talk with Anthony is a proper deep dive covering all his genre films so we will be dropping it in two parts. So remember, nothing is what it seems and the darkness is going to be staring right back at you while we explore the work of Anthony DiBlasi. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It's Thursday, January 19th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Open Doors documents persecution of Christians in new list Open Doors US released its 2023 World Watch List on Tuesday.  The document ranks the top 50 countries where it is most dangerous for Christians. North Korea is back on top of the list after Afghanistan took the spot in the 2022 report. The other top 10 persecuting countries are Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Sudan. Open Doors estimates 360 million Christians faced high levels of persecution last year. Over 5,600 Christians were murdered, over 2,000 churches were attacked, and over 4,500 Christians were detained. According to Open Doors, Islamic violence is a driving factor which has led to the unprecedented numbers of Christians who have suffered. NARRATOR: “Right now, more Christians suffer higher levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith than at any time since the World Watch List began. “Over the last 30 years, Islamic oppression has grown and become more violent. Christian communities are severely attacked by a variety of jihadist groups. Converts pay a high price, and it's often their own families who carry out the so-called honor killings.” Church of England greenlights blessings of homosexual couples On Wednesday, the Church of England said it will not offer marriage ceremonies for people living in vile passions with the same sex. However, the organization plans to offer blessing services instead to homosexual couples. Bishops also plan on making an apology to people living sexually perverted lifestyles for any “rejection” they may have felt in churches. Proverbs 25:26 says, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” Transgender treatments for kids: Easier to get in U.S. A new study by Do No Harm found it is easier for children to get so-called “transgender treatments” in the U.S. than in Europe. Countries like the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, and France have been closing down gender clinics or urging caution with the use of puberty blockers. Meanwhile, children in the U.S. have easier access to such things -- even without parental consent. Dr. William Malone, a board-certified endocrinologist, told Fox News, “Transgender medicine is big business, and youth who are transitioning today will be medical patients for life . . . Mental health among youth is at an all-time low, making them particularly vulnerable to solutions that suggest an ‘easy fix.'” Iowan Catholic Diocese affirms biological sex Thankfully, not everyone is following the transgender trend. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Des Moines, Iowa implemented 17 new polices on Monday in support of biological sex. The policies affect 17 schools and 80 parishes.  The diocese now requires students to use restrooms, wear uniforms, and play on sports teams that correspond to their biological sex. The policies also ban puberty blockers and so-called “preferred” pronouns.  The diocese stated, “Our biological sex, expressed by our body, is a gift from God and is unchangeable.”  New York COVID-shot mandate for health care workers struck down Last Friday, a New York state Supreme Court judge, Gerard Neri, struck down a COVID-shot mandate for healthcare workers. The state enacted the shot mandate in August 2021. Within months, tens of thousands of healthcare employees were terminated for not complying with the mandate, including many seeking religious exemptions. In June of last year, New York made the shot requirement permanent.  Plaintiffs welcomed the recent ruling. Mary Holland with Children's Health Defense said, “We hope that this decision will continue the trend towards lifting these dangerous and unwarranted . . . mandates throughout the country.” More tech layoffs Tech layoffs show no sign of stopping in the new year. Yesterday, Microsoft announced it would be cutting 10,000 jobs. So far this year, companies are laying off about 1,600 tech workers a day.  Tech layoffs in the first two weeks of 2023 amount to 15% of such layoffs in the whole of 2022. 22 Attorneys General oppose FDA on Kill Pill And finally, Attorneys General from 22 states are challenging the Federal Drug Administration's decision to increase access to the abortion Kill Pill. New FDA rules allow women to get the kill pills over the counter. The Attorneys General wrote a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf calling for him to reverse the decision. The letter stated, “Though the FDA has abdicated its responsibility to protect women's health, we have not. To be crystal clear, you have not negated any of our laws that forbid the remote prescription, administration, and use of abortion-inducing drugs. The health and safety of our citizens—women and children included—is of paramount concern.” Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, January 19th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. From the mind of House on Haunted Hill creator William Malone comes a Geoffrey Wright film, that became a Walter Hill film, that became a Jack Sholder film and that became a final product that was disowned by everyone involved. Yup SUPERNOVA starring James Spader, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robin Tunney and Peter Facinelli is an ideal candidate for our WTF column. Rivals ALIEN 3 in terms of production woes. What was to be a modest HELLRAISER meets DEAD CALM in space opus became a production clusterf*ck. In this week's episode, I chat with true horror royalty! Inspired with film-making during weekly trips to the theatre to see the latest horror releases, by age 14 William Malone was making home movies and designing monster masks. At 19, he moved to Los Angeles to become and rockstar but a friend's request led him to work for Don Post Studios and it was in fact William who sculpted the Captain Kirk mask which eventually became the Michale Myers mask in Halloween 1978.After attending UCLA to study directing, he wrote and directed Scared To Death and followed a few years later in 1985 with Creature. For over a decade after he directed episodes of hit shows such as Freddy's Nightmares, Tales From The Crypt, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, and Sleepwalkers. In 1999, Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis approached William under their newly formed company 'Dark Castle Entertainment' and asked him to direct a remake of the 1959 William Castle film 'House On Haunted Hill'. The film has since become a cult classic and put William among horror royalty. In 2002, he returned with FearDotCom which has since gained a huge following among the horror community. Upon the request of Mick Garris, William directed an episode of Masters Of Horror in 2006 called "The Fair-Haired Child". In 2008, he funded wrote, and directed his own movie 'Parasomnia' which is essentially a sleeping beauty story with some great horror twists and turns.Join me as I chat with William about his start in horror and making his first big pictures, working with Klaus Kinski, and some insane stories you won't believe! He gives some fantastic tips for chasing your goals and aspiring directors! He also tells all about his huge movie prop collection and how he acquired it all, his fav horror movies, and what his future plans are to return to the business!Check out Untold Horrors to see some of William's unmade movies - https://linktr.ee/Untold_HorrorFollow William on Instagram @ https://www.instagram.com/williammalonedirector/If you enjoyed this episode make sure to subscribe and review, please! Happy Halloween! Filmmaker William Malone joins Heather Wixson on this special episode of Corpse Club! Listen as Malone reflects on his compelling cinematic journey, which began with working at Don Post Studios, where he sculpted the Captain Kirk Star Trek mask and helped customize it to create the iconic Michael Myers mask for John Carpenter's Halloween. Malone discusses how he then broke into the film industry as a director with his early movies Scared to Death and Creature, which helped kickstart a career that led to his remake of House on Haunted Hill. With the bold reimagining of William Castle's classic horror film celebrating its 20th anniversary this Halloween, Malone looks back on the making of his star-studded 1999 film, and he also talks about his work behind the camera on a wide range of TV series, including Freddy's Nightmares, Tales From the Crypt, and "The Fair Haired Child" installment on Masters of Horror. Our Class of 99 series continue this week with a special double feature! We're joined this week by a special first time guest, Jennifer Horne (yep, the wife of our very own co-host Gary Horne)! Jennifer wanted to come on the show to discuss a film from 1999 and she made a very bold choice in her pick: the William Malone-directed remake of HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. While thinking about discussing this film, we also realized that William Castle's original film from 1959 was celebrating its 60th anniversary this year so we thought, "Ya know what? Let's just make this a HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL double feature!" So in this episode, we'll discuss William Castle, his film and his legacy and how that legacy lead to a series of remakes from his films in the late 90s/early 2000s, starting with HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. How did it all happen? Listen to find out, and to hear our takes on both films, including how they compare and relate to one another. And hey, one version got nominated for the Psychotronic Hall of Fame! You'll have to click the link below to find out which (or just listen to the episode). Writer/director William Malone joins the Damn Dirty Geeks to salute the science fiction legacy of FORBIDDEN PLANET, MGM's 1956 influential entry in the genre starring Walter Pigeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen and the iconic robot character Robby the Robot. A prominent horror writer and director himself, Malone's own credits include MASTERS OF HORROR, FEARDOTCOM, THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, TALES FROM THE CRYPT and more. Yet Malone's fascination with science fiction and horror began long before his career did, with three classic films influencing him in his youth: FORBIDDEN PLANET, TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Bill and the Geeks spark off a great discussion on all three landmark films. Then the DDG let Malone shine as he regales us and listeners with his tales of recreating Robby the Robot and rescuing some priceless movie memorabilia from FORBIDDEN PLANET from the trash heap -- and sadly how some items were lost to time forever. Fans will revel in this deep-cuts discussion of classic 1950s sci-fi with Bill Malone and the Geeks -- a fantastic show recorded in late 2016 and now unleashed upon Earth to conquer it!
