Join The Stronger Collective today for Crock-tober 2024 & the perfect Accessory workouts for your goals: thestrongerco.com In today's episode we chat about: 1. The Truth About Arms and Nutrition:While nutrition plays a huge role in fat loss, it's the workouts that build the muscle. Many women focus too much on isolated exercises to tone their arms, but the secret to achieving strong, toned biceps and triceps is strength training combined with proper nutrition. Your muscles are built in the gym and revealed in the kitchen. So, if you want to see definition, it's about building muscle through compound lifts and supporting that work with proper nutrition. 2. Myth Busting: Spot Training Doesn't Work:It's common to believe that if you work a specific muscle (like your arms) frequently, it will reduce fat in that area. However, fat loss is systemic, meaning you can't target fat loss to one specific area of your body. Instead, fat loss occurs across your body based on genetics, and that's where proper nutrition and a balanced workout routine come into play. The more you build muscle, the more your body burns calories, even at rest. 3. The Science Behind Arm Muscles:Your arms are made up of fast and slow-twitch muscles, which are responsible for different types of movements. Biceps (two muscle heads) and triceps (three muscle heads) are smaller muscles that fatigue quickly when overworked. Overtraining these muscles, especially with repetitive isolated movements, can stall your progress and even lead to burnout or injury. 4. Focus on Compound Lifts:Rather than isolating your biceps and triceps with constant curls and dips, focus on compound exercises like push-ups, bench presses, and overhead presses. These movements already engage your arms, meaning less direct arm work is necessary. When done correctly, compound lifts will help build the overall strength and tone you're looking for without the risk of overtraining. 5. How to Incorporate Arm Training into Your Routine:If you want to specifically target your arms, it's important to do so smartly. I recommend: Full-body workouts 3 times a week: If you're doing 3 or fewer workouts a week, focus on total body strength training to build overall muscle. 1 dedicated accessory day: Add one additional accessory day focused on bicep and tricep exercises like curls and tricep dips. Keep it short and effective, aiming for 2-3 sets per exercise. Progressive Overload: Gradually increase your weights or reps week by week to challenge your muscles and stimulate growth without overtraining them. 6. Avoid Burnout:Consistency is key. Overdoing arm exercises, or any exercises for that matter, can lead to injury, burnout, and stalled progress. Train smart, not excessively. Focus on quality over quantity, and always give your muscles time to recover. By doing this, you'll avoid injury and ensure you stay on track with your fitness goals. Takeaways for Your Fitness Journey: Less is More: Instead of overworking your arms, focus on compound lifts and strategic accessory work. Systemic Fat Loss: Remember, fat loss happens across the body, not in specific areas, so your nutrition plays a huge role in revealing those toned arms. Avoid Overtraining: Quality over quantity is key to staying consistent and avoiding burnout. Ready to see real results with your biceps and triceps? Join the Stronger Collective for access to strength training programs, accessory workouts, and nutrition plans designed to help you build strong, toned arms and achieve total body fitness. It took two years for Nicki Minaj to take over the world. Following her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty, she caught the attention of Lil Wayne who signed her. Minaj quickly became ubiquitous, taking over the charts and winning over rap heavyweights and pop divas with her next level guest verses. It was Nicki's debut album Pink Friday and single “Super Bass” that made her a force to be reckoned with across the board. Her pop pivot was a huge risk, especially as she pulled double duty singing and rapping on the hit. But it paid off: the song was her first Top 10 single and became the highest charting song by a female rapper since Missy Elliott's “Work It.” Joining us to discuss the song's impact and the ups and downs of Minaj's legacy is Rolling Stone staff writer Mankaprr Conteh.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Disclaimer: This Episode contains discussions of physical and sexual abuse. To skip past these discussions skip to (4:54) There is no shortage of innovators in Hip-Hop, though for the most part the genre has been a world dominated by male artists. But from her mind-bending, award-winning music videos to her experimental approach to producing, Missy Elliott has changed the game. She has been one of the most forward-thinking minds in hip-hop since she first made her debut in 1997 - regardless of gender. In her early days as an artist, Missy would form a R&B group called Fayze with friends La'Shawn Shellman, Chonita Coleman, and Radiah Scott. Through her friend Melvin Barcliff, who rapped under the name Magoo, she met Timothy Mosley, a local DJ producer operating as Timmy Tim. He would produce some demos for Fayze, including a single called “First Move.” Fayze would impress DeVante Swing, a producer, songwriter and singer for the rising R&B group Jodeci, after singing a cappella for him following a concert. Swing invited the group to record in New York City, along with their producer Tim, who Swing renamed “Timbaland” after the popular Timberland construction boots that were taking over hip-hop fashion. Missy got her first gig as a songwriter, producer and rapper on a song called “That's What Little Girls Are Made Of,” the debut single by Raven-Symoné, the eight-year-old star of The Cosby Show. But Missy quickly learned the hard way that the music biz wasn't ready to welcome her with arms wide open. Missy was blindsided though when they cast a smaller, lighter-skinned actress to lip-sync to her lines in the song's music video. At that point, she realized that she would have to work even harder to be taken seriously as an artist. Eventually Missy and Timbaland would become their own as a songwriting/production team. They co-wrote songs for artists like 702, Busta Rhymes and the debut album by Ginuwine, which Timbaland produced in full. But it was their work on One In A Million, the second album by teenage R&B sensation Aaliyah, that really opened the door for Missy as an artist. Timbaland's flickering, clap/snap sounds on One In A Million set Aaliyah apart from the rest of R&B, introducing a fresh and futuristic style that no one had ever heard before. And the duo would hit it big when the album's lead single "If Your Girl Only Knew" topped Billboard's US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, while peaking at #11 on the Hot 100. One in A Million would end up going triple platinum in the US, selling more than eight million copies worldwide, but the impact was immediate. Overnight, labels were scouring to offer Missy a record deal, but she was quick to see right through them. Through her own label, distributed by Elektra records - Missy Elliot would release the albums Supa Dupa Fly and Miss E... So Addictive - which gave her mainstream exposure as an artist - with her and Timbaland pushing their production into new territory. By 2001, Missy would release the seminal Miss E... So Addictive which not only included lead single "Get Ur Freak On", but her most popular song of all time... This is the story of Missy Elliot's "Work It" with newly unearthed audio from Missy Elliott herself!

Few musical genres have the level of deep-seated appreciation for its forefathers (and mothers) like rap and hip hop. And Missy Elliott's 2002 album, "Under Construction" is a wonderful homage to "the good old days" when it was about "British Knights and gold chains," as Elliott raps on "Back in the Day." But for all the looking back, this was also an album where Elliott continued to put her stamp on music. While the single "Work It" continues to be one of the Virginia-born Elliott's biggest and best-known hits, the album itself remains an important one from the early 2000s. "Under Construction" was up for a Grammy for Album of the Year and Best Rap Album of the Year, and has sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S. alone. It also further established Elliott as one of the most important female artists of her generation. You can listen to Under Construction by Missy Elliott on iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, and Amazon, although it's probably best on vinyl.

I wasn't especially familiar with Liza Koshy's work on Vine, YouTube, and other social media platforms the first time I covered one of her feature films, but that certainly changed after our brief chat for her summer 2020 release, Work It. A big ball of infectious energy and positivity, it was immediately clear that Koshy's star was going to continue to soar, and also that she'd be an ideal guest on Collider Ladies Night. Three years later, the time has finally come, and not only did she not disappoint, she far exceeded Ladies Night expectations.Koshy voices Margot in DreamWorks Animation's Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, the human best friend of the title character voiced by Lana Condor. When Ruby discovers she can transform into a gigantic kraken, she does what far too many high school students do with a quality that makes them different; she goes to great lengths to keep it a secret, even from her very understanding and supportive BFFs. However, when the new girl at school, Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy), turns out to be an evil mermaid with the power to destroy her hometown, Ruby knows exactly what she needs to do to keep her friends and family safe — fully unleash the kraken. With Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken now playing in theaters nationwide, Koshy joined me for a Ladies Night chat to recap her journey from becoming a Vine powerhouse to a full-blown movie star, amassing a considerable filmography a mere 10 years into her time in Los Angeles. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
