I couldn't resist the subtitle, kids, sorry. It's not that shocking—but Tim's journey was definitely only for the bold.I've known Tim Grahl—or known of him—for more than a decade. I watched him help writers like Dan Pink launch their non-fiction books onto the best seller list, and devoured and followed his excellent advice about launching my own books (which you can find here at booklaunch.com). Then I watched—or rather, listened—as he pivoted into the world of fiction, enlisting editor Shaun Coyne to join him on a podcast and help him use Coyne's Storygrid method to work on what eventually, after many revisions and a whole lot of failing in public, became Tim's first novel, The Threshing. At the same time, he and Shaun were building Storygrid into what's not just a business, but a huge community of writers and editors. He's just published his second novel, The Shithead, a very different book from the first… I call it The Firm meets The Alchemist; Tim prefers Fleishman Is In Trouble meets Faust. Both work. We talk Tim's sideways journey into fiction, and then we talk craft—in particular, how to learn what you don't know, the myth of the lone writer in a cabin and the importance of feedback and then we dig into a passionate discussion of theme. You can check out The Shithead here. This is probably the only time you'll see this. Join me—KJ—for Novelmber, which is very hard to pronounce but is my word for reclaiming my writing space in November. Think NaNoWriMo, our version—daily challenges and stretch goals, formatted by you, for you. There will be write-alongs, posts, a massive Google spreadsheet for sharing goals and updating progress, thoughts on how hard this is, and more than you want to know about why I need this regroup so badly. All writers, every genre, welcome. This is sign-up only—I don't plan to spam the whole #AmWriting community with my wails of writerly distress daily for an entire month—but it's also for everyone who wants in. I hope you'll join me—I don't want to go this alone. Don't worry, signing up is simple! Here's how:Click here to go to your #AmWriting account, and when you see this screen, toggle “Novelmber” from “off” (grey) to “on” (green).THAT'S IT!Once you set that up, you'll get all future Novelmber emails. Any audio or video will show up in those, along with write-along schedules. You'll also want to add yourself to the Google Sheet where we'll all record our overall goal, day's goals, daily progress and what we're feeling. I've started it off. Join me for the first write-alongs HERE. (That's a link to my Zoom Room.) I'll be sitting there: Friday, November 1 10:30-12:30 (ALL TIMES EST)Tuesday, November 5, 2:00-4:00Friday, November 8, 9:00-11:00 More times coming. Join me, help me, let's make Novelmber WORK! In this episode, host Becky delves into the unique experience of re-listening to a book she had read years ago, 'What Alice Forgot' by Liane Moriarty.  Re-experiencing the book offered her new insights, emphasizing how different stages of life can alter one's interpretation of a story. The narrative of Alice, who forgets a decade of her life, serves as a foundation for Becky to explore the significance of perspective in shaping our understanding of ourselves and our relationships. She highlights the positive changes in Alice's interactions when she views her life through the lens of her younger self, noting the decrease in defensiveness and increase in empathy. Becky extends these fictional themes into real-life applications, suggesting introspective questions that encourage curiosity and empathy to improve personal relationships. The episode aims to inspire listeners to consider their past and future selves in navigating current challenges, promoting a mindset of growth and openness. 00:00 Welcome to the Podcast: A Rare Dive into Rereading 01:05 Rediscovering 'What Alice Forgot': A Journey of Perspective 02:11 Exploring the Impact of Perspective Through Alice's Story 03:18 The Power of Perspective: Lessons from Alice's Experience 05:43 Applying Fictional Insights to Real-Life Relationships 08:23 Practical Steps to Embrace Curiosity and Reduce Defensiveness 09:38 Final Thoughts and Encouragement to Explore New Perspectives --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/becky-smith0/message

In today's episode Leanne and Chelle chat their way through everything written by Liane Moriaty, bestselling Australian Fiction author. Leanne and Chelle love a good plot twist and Liane Moriaty is masterful as blindsiding her audience. The Books: Nine Perfect Strangers Apple's Never Fall Big Little Lies What Alice Forgot The Husband's Secret Truly Madly Guilty Other Mentions: Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers were both turned into a made for tv mini series although BLL was extended into a 2 season mini series. Liane also wrote The Hypnotist's Love Story; The Last Anniversary; and, Three Wishes. Jaclyn Moriaty writes fiction for young readers. Nicola Moriaty, the youngest sister, wrote The Fifth Letter which Chelle referred to which is general fiction and had her captivated too. Leanne and Chelle wondered which other books of Lianne's have been optioned. We have since found an article dated 2017 that stating that What Alice Forgot; The Husband's Secret; and, Truly Madly Guilty had all been optioned. Further investigation revealed that Truly Madly Guilty is in development. It appears on IMDB that The Hypnotist's Love Story was released in 2019 starring Heather Graham and Jane Seymour however it only shows that there is one episode so may have had production stalled through the pandemic. Remember to keep reading and we'll see you Between The Lines.

I've mentioned several times over the past episodes that there is a connection but I've never taken a deep dive look at it for you. And today that's just what we are doing! I have plans to bring on guest experts and have a deeper discussion on this, so stayed tuned for that. When it's live I will include a link to that episode  in the show notes.  This episode may bring up some big and intense emotions. If that happens, please remember to be gentle with yourself. All your feelings are valid and when experienced last on average 90 seconds. If that means you need to pause this conversation and come back to it, please do that. If it means you need to skip this conversation, please do and come back in the future when you are in a state to best receive this information. If you are ready to learn about the relationship you have with food and your body and how that is connected to your mamma and  your relationship with her, keep listening.Mentioned On The ShowHave a question for the 1 year anniversary episode?Use this form   or leave me a voice message here Want to chat with me about working together?Link to Sabrina's calendar to schedule our callInstagramFacebookLive Healthily Ever After FB GroupAttachment Workbook: Christina Reese, PhD, LCPCLink to the meta-analysisApples Never Fall by Liane MoriartyAlso by Liane Moriarty: Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers, What Alice Forgot, Three Wishes, Truly Madly Guilty, The Husband's Secret

Meredith and Kaytee are joined by Mindy today in a three-host show full of bookish delights. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host. A book club win for kids, a book train with friends, and strong opinions about a bookish movie. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. There’s some serious gushing over books in this week’s titles, plus a couple “I didn’t like this” strong opinions. Hold onto your earbuds. We are doing a brief Slow But Steady check-in this week to let you know what we’re choosing for our next reads for this challenge. For our deep dive this week, we are playing around with book pairings for TV shows that we’ve enjoyed in the past. We each chose two shows to dive deep into and then find ways to replicate some of those same feelings in our reading. What fun! Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got a “very favorite” read-aloud book, one that will work, even if you’re down to the wire on a challenge category, and a book that is perfect for gift-giving. Meredith is recording with a special guest this week and has a big announcement, so be sure you tune in right at the top! You’ll hear again from our friend Mindy Brouse, best friend of the show and reader extraordinaire. You'll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host. These bookish moments have a common thread in that they involve real life pressing books into the hands of friends and the reactions of those friends. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got books spanning genres and time periods and continents. We’ve got ones that will spark discussion, we’ve got books that’ll leave your heart aflutter. It’s a great week of book talk! Our Slow But Steady check in is going to move to every once in a while instead of every week. You can still check in on Instagram on the regular, but we’re not going to keep banging the “I’ve got very little to report” drum. Thanks to the listener survey and all your great feedback! For our deep dive this week, Meredith and Mindy are chatting about raising readers of all ages. There are some really fantastic tips and some great encouragement in this episode, friends. Even if you don’t have kids (or don’t like kids), I’m guessing you know a reader in your life who would love to hear this chunk, so pass it along! Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands: we’ve got one that has been mentioned many times on the podcast but never “pressed” and one that should be in your box of Christmas books that you haul out every December. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down! *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links. Meredith and Kaytee are back with SO many books my fingers are cramped (this is becoming a theme…). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: family presentation at homeschool group and going into a new book completely blind. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got five current reads this week, and they are sci-fi/fantasy heavy, which is WEIRD for us! Lots of strong opinions here! We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads and what’s been happening in the past week. Also a short grammar lesson on “Swifties”. For our deep dive this week, we had a number of listeners (and real life friends) request our favorite parenting books. This will span everything from pregnancy/birth to infanthood to growing children to adding siblings. Plus one funny pick for when you just want to laugh it off. I was the kid who had to be made to go out and play because I wanted to stay in and read. I’ve always loved mysteries and thrillers, starting way back when with Nancy Drew and Treasure Island and continuing today with favorite authors like Sharon Bolton, Jane Casey, and Dennis Lehane. Several years ago, I began writing reviews for an online national book review website, but soon found I wanted my own space to share my thoughts on the books I’ve read, loved, and maybe not loved. I decided to start my own blog and after much trial and error, It’s Book Talk was born. The best part of blogging by far is the friends I’ve made in the book community. It’s been so fun to interact with book lovers from around the world. In my own family, I have a husband and two college age sons I continue to try to convert into being readers. Today's episode is with my guest Maggie Combs.  Maggie is a wife, mom to three boys, author, writer, speaker, and mentor, and living the small farm life in Minnesota,.  Maggie’s first book is entitled, Unsupermommy and I loved it.  One of the best books I have ever read!  Over on Maggie’s instagram @unsupermommy, I love how she shares practical gospel truth in the midst of her real life.   And, that is what this episode is about!  I wanted to know about her farm life, her life with her hubby and three boys, and what led her to write Unsupermommy.  I asked her a lot of questions about different aspects of mommyhood that I had read in her book.  I cannot say enough about how much I loved this episode and of course, Maggie. What you don’t know is that the power went out at the beginning of our conversation and I had to wait until my router rebooted!  Maggie was so kind about it and told me about another time something like that happened to her and it made me feel so much better!   SHOW NOTES: Connect with Maggie on Instagram her website, or over on FB Maggie's favorites: Kombucha, Mint Tea w/ Almond Milk Books she's reading:  What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty Parenting by Paul David Tripp Order Maggie's book HERE    ~~~~~~~~~~~ I would LOVE to connect with you over on Instagram! Real Life Runners I Tying Running and Health into a Family-Centered Life

With the start of a new school year, there has been a lot of talk about clean slates and fresh starts. Today, we talk about that concept and take two different angles: 1. On one hand, we should look at everyday as a fresh start, a new chance to make choices that lead us closer to the person that we want to become, the goal we want to achieve or the milestone that we want to hit. Why wait until some random day on the calendar when you can just start today? 2. On the other hand, do we ever actually get a clean start? Our experiences shape us and our view of the world, so is there such a thing as a fresh start? Can we just forget about the past and start again? And if so, do you want to? We talk about reality vs. perception, and how all events and people in our life can help to teach us things and help us to grow. Yes, each day is a new day, and we should be conscious about the choices that we make, but changing our perceptions on past events to turn every event into a learning experience can greatly help us to grow into the people we are meant to be. Katie Ganshert is a wife and amazing mom to two sweet kiddos. I met her while we were both in the process of adopting our sweet daughters from the DRC in Africa. We each have a daughter with special needs and that is something we continue to bond over. She is also an AMAZING author! After I read THE GIFTING TRILOGY  I had a TOTAL fan girl moment...I KNEW HER and SHE WROTE THESE BOOKS!! It was a pretty dramatic moment in my head! Katie is so wise and kind and I love that she came on the show to tell us all about her latest book NO ONE EVER ASKED. Which I have read and will not stop talking about. I believe the conversations that will happen because of this book will be the catalyst so much change! Katie is passionate about many things, one being super mindful of her daughter seeing people who look like her. I love how her family just recently sold their house and moved so they could be apart of a more diverse community and their heart behind it all is so pure.  Links/ Recommendations Gosh, we talked about a a few different podcasts! A lovely conversation with Jennifer E. Smith, author of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, The Geography of You and Me, and Hello, Goodbye, and Everything In Between, and her most recent novel, Windfall. She talks about the teacher who made all the difference, and some key questions, like: are we all always writing the same story? And can you be an optimist and believe in fate?   Jennifer E Smith Show Notes Lauren Graham Mary Higgins Clark John Grisham The Babysitters’ Club by Ann M.
