Today we have a very special guest. From the stages of off-Broadway to the bright lights of Broadway, from his unmistakable voice to his performances in 30+ movies, Harvey Fierstein has spent a lifetime telling stories that matter. With four Tony Awards to his name—two for writing, two for acting—his work in Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, and Hairspray has redefined representation on stage. But beyond the accolades, there's the man: a Brooklyn-born artist whose journey has been shaped by family, resilience, and an unyielding belief in telling the truth. Harvey also has a deep love for sewing and costume design. Before becoming famous Fierstein studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a costume designer in the off-off-Broadway world. He has spoken about his passion for sewing in interviews, reminiscing about how he used to design and create costumes for drag performers and theater productions which helped shape his deep understanding of theatrical presentation and character development. His early work in costume design was part of his immersion in the vibrant New York theater community of the 1970s, where he collaborated with experimental and LGBTQ+ artists.Even as his career in theater took off with Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray, sewing remained a part of his life. He has mentioned that working with fabric and creating garments is a meditative and creative outlet for him. His appreciation for costume design also extends to his theatrical work, where he often acknowledges the impact of great costume designers in bringing characters to life.So today we go beyond the footlights to explore the moments that made him—his early days, the influence of his parents, why Ridgefield, Connecticut became his adopted hometown and, why sewing has been an anchoring thread in his life. (2:15) We welcome the inimitable Harvey Fierstein! He shares how he first picked up sewing—starting with an industrial machine in his father's handkerchief factory—before setting his sights on becoming a Disney animator. But, things changed for him and as Harvey puts it, “Life only changes when you're brave enough to say yes.”(5:27) A deep dive into Harvey's quilting journey, from discovering HGTV and Alex Anderson to creating story-driven quilts today. His first quilt? Alex Anderson's Strips that Sizzle!(9:25) Growing up in a conservative Jewish household, Harvey learned the power of storytelling from his family. Education, art, music, and Broadway were all part of his upbringing, shaping the creative force he became.(11:45) Family isn't just who you're born to—it's also who you find. Harvey talks about his “found family” in the theatre, the people who call him “mama” and “papa,” and what it means to always be true to yourself.(13:32) Ever wonder what a Harvey Fierstein Stitch & Bitch session looks like? He spills all about his quilting experiments and creative process.(16:03) From bold colors to playful designs, Harvey shares his favorite fabrics and how he keeps things fresh alternating between challenging and just plain silly projects.(20:15) Picking a favorite quilt is like picking a favorite child—but Harvey gives it a shot!(23:20) The costumes that left a mark: Harvey reflects on the magic of theatrical costumes, the collaborative art of design, and why theatre itself is an act of faith.(27:07) Favorite roles—on stage, in film, and yes, even Death to Smoochy!(30:30) Writing his memoir I Was Better Last Night was a journey in itself. Harvey shares what inspired him to put his life on paper.(31:20) When did he finally feel accepted? And what really led him to move Torch Song Trilogy to Broadway? It's not the story you think!(32:31) A mother always knows! The moment Harvey's mom saw her own earrings on him during Torch Song Trilogy—and her priceless reaction.(34:00) What's the secret to his success? According to Harvey, it's all about taking that unexpected fork in the road.(38:38) The quilting class that changed everything: What Harvey learned from Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and Liza Lucy.(39:10) Quilting vs. theatre—two creative worlds, two very different communities. Harvey compares the two.(40:54) The key to keeping every performance fresh? Harvey reveals how he does it.(43:06) Why Bridgefield, CT has been home for 40 years—and how Harvey's house reflects is unique perspective on life and art.(46:00) “As much as it hurts, tell the truth.” Harvey explains how this philosophy, shaped by his father, has guided his life and career.(47:25) What's next—what's left on Harvey's bucket list?(52:18) Want to connect with Harvey? Why Cuts to Medicaid & SNAP Will DEVASTATE America. Should Dems Skip the SOTU? This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum brace for the long night (shout out GOT fans). House Republicans passed a budget framework that includes massive cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, plus huge tax breaks for the wealthy. Trump is literally going to war with the poor. It’s not hyperbole to say that millions of American lives are at risk. Meanwhile, big shakeups at MSNBC mean there is even less representation in cable news these days. We grieve the loss of Joy Reid’s show, The ReidOut, and ask: would boycotting cable news be more harmful or helpful? Should Democrats show up to Trump’s State of the Union address? With Trump dismantling our democracy and the GOP pushing for devastating cuts to the social safety net, attending this yearly ceremony may just be a bad look. Lastly: WE WON!! Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 19th of December 2024. The last week was a little more disturbed than usual and we had a Kp index that hit 5.33. An enhanced solar wind stream contributed to active geomagnetic conditions and an interplanetary shockwave, that swept past Earth at 0519UTC on the 17th of December, caused minor G1 geomagnetic storming. A far-sided halo coronal mass ejection event also occurred later on the 17th of December at 1600UTC although this was not directed towards Earth. This shows that the Sun is still very active, and we should not be surprised if we experience more solar flares and CMEs. The solar flux index stayed in the 160s and 170s and we should keep an eye on active region 3927, which is currently turning to be Earth-facing and has already been the source of some C-class solar flares. Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index may rise slightly to be in the 180s. The largest Kp index forecast is 2, which probably means that NOAA is unsure about what will actually happen. We are pleased to report that OF9X is once again on the air from the land of Santa Claus in Lapland. Up to 16 operators will operate Santa Radio on the 160 to 6m bands using CW, SSB, RTTY, FT4 and FT8. They have already been spotted on the 30 and 20m bands using CW and on the 12 and 17m bands using RTTY. So, there is plenty of scope to work them. According to the prediction program Proppy, paths to Lapland should be open on 14MHz from 0800UTC to 1800UTC. On 28MHz, expect them to be open from 0930 to 1500UTC. The 80 and 40m bands should be mainly open during the hours of darkness. As always, across the Christmas period, we recommend that you use solarham.com and propquest.co.uk for real-time updates on solar and ionospheric conditions. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO. Last week ended in a colder unsettled period of weather with strong north-westerly winds and spells of rain or showers. The air is sufficiently cold that some snow is possible over northern hills. This is potentially good news for rain or snow scatter, especially off fast-moving showers down the coastal fringes of the UK.  Although the nearest high remains near the Azores to begin with, it slowly migrates east to France and, by Christmas, to central Europe. This will bring high pressure and possibly Tropo onto Santa's list from Christmas Eve onwards. Look for patches of misty low cloud or fog for the best conditions. As usual, check for other modes. Meteor scatter and aurora are both worth consideration and this is a prime time for out-of-season Sporadic-E between now and about mid-January.  One of the helpful aspects of looking for winter Sporadic-E is that quite often the jet streams are significantly stronger than in the more traditional summer Sporadic-E season. Jet streams are a good source of turbulence that can eventually propagate up to the E region to make Sporadic-E propagation. Jet streams are shown on upper air charts and can be a good geographical guide to Sporadic-E prospects in the summer and should therefore be similarly consulted for these winter events. In this case, they tell us that the first half of the coming week, up to Christmas Day, is well set up with a northerly jet stream over central Europe and, more importantly, crossing the Alps. So, a second mode goes on to Santa's list. Check the VHF Cluster's Sporadic-E graphs at propquest.co.uk for early signs of activity, particularly for paths to the southeast into Italy and the Balkans. The Moon started this weekend with positive declination but goes negative late today, the 22nd. Path losses are at their highest due to apogee on Christmas Eve. 144MHz sky noise is high until Wednesday, including near-eclipse conditions all day on Monday. That's it for this year. How about making a New Year's resolution to try a new mode? Maybe use SSB or CW on VHF now and again and put out lots of CQ calls in 2025! And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Over the years, we've been honored to host iconic figures like Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably, who revealed how color can be a life-changing force, and Tula Pink, who welcomed us into her imaginative, boundary-pushing world. We heard from Alex Anderson, who reminded us of the importance of claiming space for our creativity, and Amanda Murphy, who inspired us to stretch the boundaries of traditional quilting. This journey has introduced us to countless other inspiring voices: astronaut Dr. Karen Nyberg, who shared her love for quilting in space; Michael Thorpe, whose bold textile art challenges conventions; and the incomparable Gee's Bend Quilters, represented by Mary Margaret Pettway, whose work connects us to a rich heritage of storytelling through fabric. We've also learned from quilting luminary Ricky Tims, who shared his unique blend of music and quilting, costume designer Justine Seymore and Julian Collins, who creates fashion with purpose. Mimi G brought her vibrant energy and DIY spirit, while Deanna Springer reminded us of the enduring legacy of Nancy Zieman and the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show. We've brought you behind the scenes at Quilt Week in Paducah, BERNINA university, C2E2, QuiltCon, The Sewing and Stitching Expo, Houston Festival, The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show and The National Quilt Museum.  And our guest list goes on: Gail Yellen with her expert sewing techniques, sustainable designer Tristan Detweiler, creative advocate Kristina Wong, and reality star Craig Conover from Southern Charm who we accompanied to North Charleston High School as he donated BERNINA sewing machines to their maker space. We've heard from visionaries like Jean Wright from Sew Sisters, Amanda Richie from Unshattered and fabric artist Cookie Washington, each of whom has left an unforgettable mark on our community. As we reflect on these first 100 episodes, we are profoundly grateful to each guest who has shared their time, talent, and insights, and to each of you who have been with us on this journey.  So now, let's celebrate by taking you back to February 18, 2021, to where it all began with a replay of our very first episode featuring the incredible Bisa Butler. Here is Sew & So episode #1… This podcast explores Bisa Butler's fascinating journey, which began with her getting a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting at Howard University. Realizing painting was not her passion, she went on to Montclair University to pursue a Master in Teaching. It was there, while making a quilt in her first-ever fibers class, that she had an artistic epiphany; she realized she could do what she loved, express her creativity in a way that moved her deeply, and tell the countless untold stories of African Americans.  Each pivotal step in her journey is described in fascinating detail. She talks about learning to sew from her grandmother; a black woman, and wife of an Emissary, who found herself transported to Morocco. She and her husband had to attend many formal events, and since they couldn't afford to buy the refined clothing, one was required to wear, her grandmother would pore through fashion magazines and create replicas of designer outfits. The scraps of fibers and fabrics from those outfits can be seen in Bisa's portraits of her grandmother and grandfather. She explains how using little bits of their lives helped inform her work. Butler describes her work as “excavating the soul, where her own spirit has a conversation with someone who has long passed. The process begins with a portrait. By gazing into the eyes of her subject and really looking at the lines, creases, scars and the expression in their eyes, she can ‘hear' their unspoken story. She spoke of the improvisational nature of private quilts and their ability to tell the personal experiences of her people (21:20 – 24:21). As she details her journey through galleries and museums, Butler recounts the bias that was shown towards artists who use cloth in their art. But through all the rejections and dismissals, she kept at it, slow and steady, until her work exhibited at a New York gallery. After that, her work began getting accepted at more galleries and museums. Her fiber and fabric creation, The Storm, the Whirlwind, and the Earthquake features a life‐sized representation of abolitionist and social reformer Fredrick Douglass whose magnetic gaze pulled her in. This piece is a powerful example of how Butler's painterly textiles convey a sense of shared humanity were on exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art. Her textile creations were exhibited in the European Painting Gallery Space at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021. This is the first time a living artist has been showcased in this space. Her work iwasalso featured in Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance at the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a joy to learn about the strides fiber, fabric and quilting artists have made, and we owe much of it to Bisa Butler. Her personal story of using textiles and the medium of quilting to celebrate her heritage and her community and her powerful art is a great inspiration to us all. This is one story you don't want to miss, so make sure you catch the podcast. You can learn more about Bisa Butler and view some of her amazing works of art at Bisabutler.com If you know someone you think has an outstanding story – a story that should be shared on this podcast, please drop me a note to meg@sew&sewpodcast.com  or complete the form on this website. Be sure to subscribe to, review and rate this podcast on your favorite platform. Don Beattie, G3BJ discussed the very different amateur radio environment of 1924, and the history and events of October that year when the first two-way trans-global radio communication between the UK and New Zealand took place. This centenary celebration is just one of a range of activities that have included RadCom articles and a re-enactment of the contact at Mill Hill School. In his presentation on using AI to write simple amateur radio applications, RSGB Board Chair Dr Stewart Bryant, G3YSX considers how using AI software can improve productivity and bring the ability to write effective software within the reach of more people. This presentation is being released separately as part of the RSGB's focus on encouraging coding and programming activities amongst the amateur radio community. You can find a range of coding resources on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/coding  To watch both presentations, go to the RSGB YouTube channel and choose the ‘RSGB 2024 Convention' playlist. The final RSGB Tonight@8 webinar of 2024 is on Monday the 2nd of December. The presentation by Tim Hier, G5TM will focus on the various HF antennas available for portable operating. He will also look at how to use very basic modelling software to ascertain the choices you have at your disposal. Tim's ethos when working portable is simple, “Five minutes from arrival to operating and no more”. Tim is also the editor of RadCom Basics and will refer to content in that RSGB publication that will help radio amateurs who want to try portable operating. Watch the webinar live on the RSGB YouTube channel or special BATC channel and ask questions via the live chat. To find out more go to the RSGB website at rsgb.org/webinars Youngsters on the Air Month begins one week today. Callsign GB24YOTA will be active for the month, hosted by a range of groups, clubs and individuals. Marlborough Scout Group will be the first team of youngsters to operate. They will be on the air before midday on Sunday the 1st of December, and then again after 6 pm on the same day. Also operating the special callsign next Sunday will be the Cambridge University Wireless Society. They will be hosting the callsign between 12 pm and 6 pm. Remember to listen out and have a QSO with a young radio amateur on the air. If you'd like to get involved, you've still got time. Go to QRZ.com  and search for GB24YOTA to check availability and then email Jamie, M0SDV at yota.month@rsgb.org.uk to register your interest.  The RSGB VHF Contest Committee is currently planning the rules for the 2025 VHF contests. Following some discussion at the RSGB Convention, the committee members have some questions on which they would appreciate feedback from contestants, with particular topics focused on VHF Field Day and the Back Packers events. You can find the survey online at tinyurl.com/VHFCC2025 and it will close on Friday the 6th of December. Members of Wokingham u3a Amateur Radio Group have secured a new club call sign, G5UTA. The group operated the callsign for the first time during the national u3a week in September. G5UTA can be used by any u3a member with a Full licence, in support of a u3a event or demonstration. You can read more about the new callsign, including how to apply for authorisation to use it, in the January 2025 edition of RadCom. To find out more about amateur radio as a subject area within u3a, you can contact its new subject adviser Paul, G0NDN via the u3a website at tinyurl.com/u3asubjects The historic VLF transmitter at Grimeton Radio Station in Sweden is celebrating one hundred years since it was put into commercial operation. QSL via F5GSJ, Logbook of the World or ClubLog OQRS. Now the contest news The CQ World Wide DX CW Contest started at 0000UTC on Saturday the 23rd of November and ends at 2359UTC today, Sunday the 24th of November. Using CW on the 160 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and CQ Zone. The UK is in Zone 14. On Tuesday, the 26th of November, the RSGB SHF UK Activity Contest runs from 1930 to 2230UTC. Using all modes on the 13cm, 9cm, 6cm and 3cm bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Wednesday, the 27th of November, the UK and Ireland Contest Club 80m Contest runs from 2000 to 2100UTC. Using CW on the 80m band, the exchange is your six-character locator. On Thursday, the 28th of November, the RSGB 80m Autumn Series CW Contest runs from 2000 to 2130UTC. Using CW on the 80m band only, the exchange is signal report and serial number. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 21st of November. We've had yet another week of relatively calm geomagnetic conditions. The solar flux index has been in the 160s and despite having 14 M-class solar flares over seven days, we haven't had any coronal mass ejections to contend with. As a result, the daytime maximum usable frequency, or MUF, over a 3,000km path has been high, reaching more than 35MHz at times. The MUF declines after sunset, as expected, settling at about 12-13MHz, meaning the only HF band open to DX has been the 10MHz or 30-metre band. DX this week has included 3D2Y in Rotuma. This Pacific DXpedition has been spotted in Europe, on 20m, 15m and 17m CW, so plenty of choice as to which band you try. E51SGC in Rarotonga on the Cook Islands has also been spotted across many of the HF bands, but they will be leaving on the 24th of November. The good news is that the team of Stan LZ1GC and Ted LZ5QZ are moving on to Tonga as A35GC from the 25th of November until the 7th of December 2024. Gerben (PG5M) is active on the Falkland Islands as VP8G and has been spotted on 20m, 15m and 10m CW. He is there until the 25th of November so get in quickly! Next week, NOAA predicts that the SFI may rise to the mid-250s again. Geomagnetic conditions are largely predicted to be good, although do keep an eye on solarham.com for updates. And don't forget the CQ Worldwide CW contest this weekend which should bring a lot of DX to the HF bands. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO. The weather is now in an unsettled phase with areas of low pressure bringing alternating spells of mild wet and windy weather interspersed with colder brighter and breezy showery weather.  This raises a couple of radio-related points; one is that we will see some very strong and potentially damaging winds in some areas, so check daily forecasts and make sure your mast guys are secure; and secondly an absence of any marked high-pressure Tropo weather.  Rain and snow scatter may be worth checking on the GHz bands in such unsettled weather. Meanwhile, meteor scatter is worthy of greater attention as next week's list of showers includes the small Alpha Monocerotids shower and the tail end of the big Leonids shower.   This introduces another potential nugget of interest in that it is widely accepted that meteors form the source material for Sporadic-E. Despite being out of season in the traditional sense, the prevalence of stronger jet streams in unsettled weather makes the next week a possible ‘watch period' for Es. If you are curious about what these might look like, check out the propquest.co.uk  website and look for the near vertical incidence skywave or NVIS tab for Wednesday the 20th of November 2024. During the two events in the middle of the day and evening, the critical frequency of the Es layer reached values of nearly 10MHz, which could equate to four-metre propagation on a good day. You will see the Es blog tab upper air charts also show a jet stream of greater than 100 knots.  For EME operators, the Moon has passed peak declination so Moon availability and peak elevation will be falling. Path losses are high and rising towards apogee on Tuesday the 26th. 144MHz sky noise is low all week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

GB2RS News Sunday the 30th of June 2024   The news headlines: The IARU HF Championship is coming up Learn about the QMX+ transceiver at the next RSGB Tonight@8 webinar The Examinations Standards Committee has published its annual report   The IARU HF Championship contest will be held between the 13th and 14th of July and there is a great opportunity for you to get involved in a different way this year. During the contest, ‘Headquarters Stations' represent their countries and the RSGB's station GR2HQ will be run by a network of about a dozen stations around the UK and islands. This year, the RSGB Contest Committee has introduced a new challenge to encourage individual stations to work the GR2HQ station on each band-mode slot. You will be able to submit your log, including QSOs with GR2HQ, to the RSGB contest robot for the GR2HQ Challenge. If you include your club or group name when you submit your log, each QSO with GR2HQ will count towards an aggregate score for your club or team. There will be two results tables, one for individuals taking part and one for clubs, so your QSOs can contribute to both! Why not encourage your club members to take part in this special challenge whether they are regular contesters or not. By contacting the GR2HQ station you'll also help the RSGB's position in the contest – last year the RSGB came third and the Society would love to improve on that result. You can read more in the June RadCom feature on the GR2HQ Challenge and you can see the rules on the RSGB website at thersgb.org/go/gr2hq The next RSGB Tonight@8 webinar is on Monday the 8th of July when Hans Summers, G0UPL from QRP Labs will give a presentation on the QMX+ multi-mode 160 to 6m transceiver kit design and features. This is a great opportunity to find out more and ask questions live on the night. You can watch on the RSGB YouTube channel or special BATC channel. Find out more about the webinar on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/webinars The Examinations Standards Committee has published its annual report, relating to activities in 2023. Whilst the report shows that in 2023 there were fewer candidates across all licence levels, the number of people taking exams so far in 2024 has increased significantly. Another item in the report relates to the preparations that are being made to release the bank of questions for the Full licence exam. The ESC Chair, Tony Kent, G8PBH says that it has long been recognised that a review of the question bank, particularly at Full level, is well overdue and has been delayed multiple times by things such as the need to revise the syllabus for EMF and the new licence changes. Reviewing the question bank is the next priority of the ESC and the Exams and Syllabus Review Group and will begin on the 1st of September when Syllabus 1.6 is up and running. The ESC and ESRG believe it is better that this review is conducted before the bank is published as this should reduce the workload on the community and the exams teams in making and responding to queries on questions that may be withdrawn. They are hoping to release the questions in January 2025. To see the full ESC report go to rsgb.org/esc  and click on the minutes, papers and reports tab on the right. The team from hi-impact based on the Wirral is planning its first high-altitude balloon launch of 2024. Using all modes on the VHF bands, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. On Sunday the 7th, the 3rd 144MHz Backpackers Contest runs from 1100 to 1500UTC. Using all modes on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.       Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 27th of June 2024 We had another lucky week with quite a high solar flux index, low Kp geomagnetic numbers, few solar flares and no coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, of note. In fact, you couldn't ask for better! But is that all about to change? With nine active solar regions on the Sun's surface and the return of old region 3664, now renamed 3723, it would be a brave person to suggest otherwise. So, let's take a closer look at the Sun. Of the nine active regions that are visible, four are classed as stable, one is classed as declining and four are classed as growing. With a solar flux index of 181, there is plenty of UV radiation around. However, we are currently in the summer doldrums so maximum useable frequencies, or MUFs, are lower than they are in the Autumn and Winter. In other words, we are not going to see a return to reliable worldwide DX conditions on the higher bands until mid to late September. There is currently only a 5% chance of a strong X-class solar flare, although a bright coronal mass ejection was observed for a second day off the Sun's west limb. This was directed away from our planet so shouldn't affect us. NOAA predicts that the Kp index could rise due to CME arrivals from an event that left the Sun on the 24th of June. Expect a Kp of 4 or 5, with a reduction in the MUF until the geomagnetic disruption abates. It also predicts that the solar flux index will remain in the region of 190, hopefully with a low Kp index after the ionosphere settles again. MUFs over a 3,000km path are generally between 18 and 23MHz during daylight and around 18MHz at night. This means that for the next month or so we may expect 14MHz to remain open throughout the night.   And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The current week finishes with a return to unsettled weather and cooler air, after a brief taste of summer, particularly in the south of Britain. There will be lows drifting in from the Atlantic during the coming week, as well as the occasional passing weather front. Although there was some Tropo last week, during the brief period of high pressure, this is unlikely to be repeated in the coming week. Therefore, we have a continuing random chance of some rain scatter, but you will need one of the many online weather radar displays to track the scatter regions down. Since next week also looks windier, you might have to keep one hand on the rotator! Meteor scatter is once again down to random events, which means an early start in the shack to capture the higher rates in the early mornings. The solar conditions continue to keep trying to creep into VHF affairs with a higher Kp index and thoughts of radio aurora, but it's probably not a strong shout. Now to our last item – Sporadic-E. There is still the broad summer Sporadic-E peak, which extends into the first week of September in a good year, so you have plenty of time. It will not always be there but, in a test analysis of Dourbes data in June 2022, 84% of the days reached 10m, with 18% up to 6m and around 10% to 4m or above. This makes it worth using the 10m band to highlight the regions of activity and then check the 6m beacons in case it strengthens to bring in the higher bands. Moon declination goes positive again this coming weekend so Moon peak elevation and window lengths will increase. Perigee was on Thursday the 27th so EME path losses are increasing again. 144MHz sky noise is low at the start of the coming week and moderate later. From Friday afternoon on the 5th of July to midday on Saturday, the Moon and the Sun are very close in the sky, meaning high noise for all but the narrowest beamwidth antennas. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

GB2RS News Sunday the 23rd of June 2024   The news headlines: RSGB Convention workshops and practical sessions – what would you like? RSGB Team interviewed by ICQ Podcast at the Dayton Hamvention in May Don't forget to try the updated RSGB Discovery Scheme Do you like making things? Are you interested in finding out more about the Raspberry Pi or programming an Arduino? Have you heard about the NanoVNA and DragonOS but don't know where to start? The RSGB wants its 2024 Convention to offer practical sessions to help radio amateurs try something new, develop their skills and go away inspired! If you can offer to run a workshop or a practical session over the weekend of the 11th to the 13th of October, or you'd like to take part in one, please email the RSGB Convention Team via convention@rsgb.org.uk by the 3rd of July. As part of its strategy, the RSGB wants to ensure that this prestigious annual event not only meets the needs of its members but also helps every radio amateur to share their love of the hobby with others. Members of the RSGB Team, including RSGB President John McCullagh, GI4BWM and RSGB General Manager Steve Thomas, M1ACB, had a successful time at the Dayton Hamvention in May. The event was a brilliant opportunity to engage with radio amateurs from around the world and it resulted in 132 people joining the RSGB. It also provided several media opportunities with podcasters, YouTubers and local news outlets. Martin Butler, M1MRB from ICQ Podcast was one of those who interviewed the President and the General Manager. The interview covered a wide range of topics, from using the new licence conditions as part of outreach, to the RSGB's role in defending the spectrum and even to the RSGB President's amateur radio activities with both RAYNET UK and SOTA! For the full interview go to Episode 432 on icqpodcast.com and listen just before two hours into the episode. Have you tried the updated RSGB Discovery Scheme? Now called the Discovery Logbook, there are fewer requirements, an easy-to-follow programme and exciting links with external organisations such as Parks On The Air and Worked All Britain. There are also some great RSGB Awards to work towards if you'd like to include those in your programme of activities. As a relatively new radio amateur, Jim, ME7HEF had found that the sheer breadth of the hobby made it a little difficult to know where to start. The Discovery Scheme gave him a simple structure to try various aspects of amateur radio and he has enjoyed it. Read more about Jim's experience on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/your-stories and follow the links to find out how you could try something new using the Discovery Logbook. The RSGB is looking for an individual to take on the complex role of Editor of the annual RSGB Yearbook, following the retirement of the previous Editor. This is a paid post, working part-time from home for a few months each year, and is offered as a fixed-term contract. You will need experience of editing material from a wide range of sources and working to deadlines, as well as having attention to detail. An understanding of desktop publishing programs such as InDesign will be helpful along with knowledge of the breadth of amateur radio in the UK today. If you are interested in this post, please email authors@rsgb.org.uk with an appropriate CV or covering statement of your abilities. Last weekend was 1940s weekend at the Bletchley Park Museum. The RSGB National Radio Centre, or NRC, supported the event by hosting the World War Two Special Operations Executive radio station, GB1SOE. The station, operating on the 40m band, attracted lots of visitor attention, as did GB3RS which was busy on the air as part of the Museums on the Air weekend. NRC volunteers made QSOs and invited visitors to pass greetings messages. If appropriate, the volunteers used the new licence conditions to allow visitors to run QSOs themselves under supervision. The weekend was a huge success and 1,211 people visited the RSGB National Radio Centre. The Society would like to thank all the NRC volunteers who delivered such an enjoyable weekend. Alexanderson Day will take place on Sunday the 30th of June 2024. The unique Alexanderson alternator, with the callsign SAQ, is scheduled for two transmissions on 17.2kHz using CW. At 0830UTC, the alternator will be started up and at 0900UTC the first transmission will take place. A second transmission is scheduled for 1200UTC. You can read more about the event and historic transmitter at alexander.n.se The Bath Based Distance Learning team is busy enrolling students into its pre-course classroom for its forthcoming course for the Full Licence exam. The team has received enquiries about whether its course is suitable for the Direct to Full exam. The course content focuses on the Full level syllabus items, which are only a part of the Direct to Full syllabus. Learners are expected to know the Foundation and Intermediate material already. Parallel study is possible, but the Bath Based Distance Learning Full Licence course alone would not be sufficient to ensure a pass in a Direct to Full exam. More details can be found in the latest edition of RadCom, but please note that the email address provided to RadCom was incorrect; anyone wanting details of the Bath Based Distance Learning course should email Steve, G0FUW, using g0fuw@bbdl.org.uk  Guisborough and District Amateur Radio Club is organising a mini DXpedition to Scotland, on the Isle of Lewis from the 22nd to the 29th of September. Using SSB on the 80m band, the exchange is signal report and serial number. On Sunday the 30th, the UK Microwave Group 5.7 and 10GHz Contest runs from 0600 to 1800UTC. Using all modes on 5.7 and 10GHz frequencies, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 20th of June 2024 We had a relatively quiet week, with the Sun generally being settled. There were coronal mass ejections, but they were on the far side of the Sun and not Earth-directed. There were no X-class flares, although we did have a few C- and M-class events. The solar flux index declined to 167 but has since recovered and stood at 196 on Thursday the 20th. Active regions 3712, 3713 and 3716 are all large and 3712 has been emitting flares. However, all three regions will soon rotate out of view, so should not be a threat in the coming week. As such, HF conditions have been reasonable given the time of year. Maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path during daylight have generally been between 14 and 21MHz, although there have been occasional openings up to 24MHz. Sporadic-E remains the main propagation mode on the 10m band. Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain in the 175 to 190 range and geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be mainly settled. However, the far-side coronal mass ejections we have been seeing suggest we could be in for a rough ride in about a week to ten days. So, this week could be a good time for HF propagation. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The weather is trying to change to a more summer-like pattern, which means that the main jet stream will be farther north than recently and this will make Sporadic-E harder to find than during the recent strong jet stream pattern over Europe. For most UK stations, the emphasis on Sporadic-E paths will gradually shift from the typical central Europe and Mediterranean to perhaps Scandinavia and the Baltic states. The relatively new player this time around will be high pressure which comes and goes during the period but should bring some useful Tropo. In these high-summer days, sea or coastal paths are often good, but paths across hot land do not fare well in summer during the daytime. Concentrate on the night or early morning, especially if it is foggy. There will be occasions when small lows and fronts edge into the south and west of the British Isles and, in typical summer fashion, may bring a risk of thundery showers. Any local, heavy rain means good conditions for rain scatter on the GHz bands. Meteor scatter again remains in the random category, which usually peaks around the dawn period. Lastly, a note about aurora which has been kept at arm's length although there have been several periods with a slightly enhanced Kp index. The light summer nights mean that visible auroras are very unlikely but do look out for noctilucent clouds on the northern horizon around midnight. Noctilucent clouds are thin, wispy clouds that glow with a blue or silvery hue at night when illuminated by sunlight from below the horizon. The Moon is at minimum declination this coming weekend so peak elevation is low and windows of usage are short. EME path loss is falling as we approach perigee next Thursday the 27th. 144MHz sky noise is high this weekend but falls to low early next week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

This week: A very busy Venus makes a swooning trine to Mars, squares the Lunar Nodes (and pushes us out of our comfort zone), and squares Uranus, shaking up relationships and finances. Mars finally stations direct, but don't move forward too quickly. And the Libra Last Quarter Moon wraps ups a powerful Lunar Phase Family that began in late 2020. And April answer's a listener's question about how to make the most of New Moon cycles when they sometimes skip houses in your chart. Plus: The algebra of kindness, a cheesy grin, and...who's the boss? Read a full transcript of this episode. Have a question you'd like answered on the show?  Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [1:13] Venus at 08°11' Aquarius trines Mars on Jan. 9 at 7:22 AM PST. The two planets conjoined on March 5, 2022 at 0°1' Aquarius, squared each other on Sep. 16 and then had an opposition on November 30.  It's time to kiss and make up. [3:40] On Jan. 10 at 11:51 PM PST, Venus at 10°18' Aquarius squares the Lunar Nodes in Taurus and Scorpio. This square is activating the eclipse point from the April 30, 2022 Solar Eclipse at 10°28' Taurus. It also forms a wide square from Venus to the upcoming Lunar Eclipse on May 5, 2023 at 14°58' Scorpio. [4:52] The Sabian symbol for 11 Taurus, which is the degree of the North Node, is A woman sprinkling flowers. This Aquarian Venus square the Nodes on the Taurus / Scorpio axis represents an opportunity to let go of fear and suspicion and embrace trust. [6:35] Mars stations direct (finally!!!) on Jan. 12 at 12:56 PM PST at 08°07' Gemini.  Mars entered Gemini on August 20, 2022, turned retrograde on October 30, and enters Cancer on March 25, 2023.  Before leaving Gemini, however, the planet squares Neptune in Pisces on March 14. All of these transits may have had a dampening effect on our desires to take care of business over the recent months. [10:31] On Jan. 13 at 6:11 AM PST, the Sun in Capricorn sextiles Neptune at 23°06' Capricorn and Pisces. The Sabian symbol for the Sun, 24 Capricorn is A woman entering a convent. The Sabian symbol for Neptune is 24 Pisces, An inhabited isle. There's an opportunity to peek out of your cave and get a little bit more involved socially...it's your choice. ]  [13:37] Venus squares Uranus on Jan. 14 at 5:22 PM PST at 14°58' Aquarius and Taurus. The Sabian symbol for Venus is 15 Aquarius, Two love birds sitting on a fence.  Have your business or personal relationships been feeling stale?  This could be an opportunity to leave for greener pastures. [15:53] Moon Report! The Last Quarter Moon at 24°38' Libra (Jan. 14 at 6:10 PM PST) squares the Sun conjoined Pluto in Capricorn. [16:19] This Last Quarter Moon is the final critical point in a Lunar Phase Family that began with a turbulent New Moon on October 16, 2020 at 23°53' Libra, intensified at the First Quarter Moon July 17, 2021, and revealed a full story at the April 16, 2022 Full Moon. This final action point of this Lunar Phase family asks us to decide what is salvageable in relationships and what needs to be thrown into Pluto's cosmic compost bin. [19:06] Void-of-Course Moon Periods (VOC). On Jan. 9th at 5:52 PM PST, the Moon at 23°21' Leo opposes Saturn in Aquarius. It will be VOC for about 13.5 hours (!!!) before entering Virgo (Jan. 10, 7:15 am PST). Use feelings of being overlooked as fuel to work on a solo creative project. [20:22] The Moon in Virgo trines Pluto on Jan. 12 at 3:06 PM PST. The Moon will be VOC for about four hours and then enters Libra at 6:56 PM PST. This is also the same day that Mars in Gemini turns direct.  Focus may be hard to come by, but try to use this VOC period on an analytical, detailed-orientated task. [21:44] The relationship-orientated Moon in Libra squares Pluto on Jan. 15 at 12:39 AM PST. It will be VOC for about 3.5 hours before entering Scorpio at 4:08 AM PST.  If you happen to be awake at this time and are tempted to regret certain interactions, remember what Eleanor Roosevelt said: “No one can make you feel inferior without your permission.” [23:41] Listener Luisa asks about how to get the most out of New Moon cycles when they skip certain houses in her birth chart. (Here's April's video on how to change house systems on astro.com.) [3:10] Venus (Virgo 18°37') trines Uranus (Taurus 18°37') on September 19th at 9:44 pm PDT. Possible unexpected financial windfall or asset appreciation. Welcome the unexpected in your daily life. [4:39] The Sun enters Libra on September 22nd at 6:04 pm PDT. This ingress marks the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the Vernal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. The Equinoxes are the two days out of the year when night and day are equal in length. So very Libran! [5:49] What do we initiate at the Libra Equinox? Harvest time! [7:11] Libra is ruled by Venus, which is still in Virgo. Our motto for this Sun in Libra season: everything needn't be perfect for it to be perfectly good. [8:16] Also on September 22nd, Mercury makes its inferior conjunction to the Sun at 11:50 pm PDT at Libra 0°14' on the Sabian symbol 1 Libra, A butterfly made perfect by a dart through it. [9:16] While the conjunction is exact, Mercury is cazimi, particularly powerful. Look for some much-needed clarity in the realm of Mercury (communications, thinking, commerce, short-distance travel, etc.) [10:15] Retrograde Mercury will re-enter Virgo on September 23rd at 5:04 AM PDT, in a neighborhood it last visited August 21 - 26, 2022. Mercury stations direct on October 2nd and re-enters Libra on October 10th. [11:32] Venus opposes Neptune on September 24th at 1:51 AM PDT at 23°49' of Virgo and Pisces. The Sabian symbol for Venus is 24 Virgo, Mary and her white lamb. The Sabian symbol for Neptune is 24 Pisces, An inhabited island -  also the degree of the April 12 Jupiter-Neptune conjunction. Sharing is caring! [13:20] Moon Report for the week of September 19th. The Libra New Moon is on September 25th at 2:54 PM PDT at Libra 2°48' and the  Sabian symbol 3 Libra, The dawn of a new day, everything changed. This Sun and Moon opposed Jupiter in Aries lends an uplifting note to the change. [15:54] This Libra New Moon initiates a 27- month cycle (Check out April's conversation with Celeste Brooks about the Lunar Phase Family Cycle in Episode 141!) Important dates in this cycle are: First Quarter Moon on June 26th, 2023; the Full Moon on March 25, 2024; and the Third Quarter Moon on December 20, 2024. [17:32] Void-of-Course Moon periods for this week. On Sept. 20, the Moon in Cancer will sextile the Sun in Virgo at 8:57 AM PDT then go Void-of-Course for almost five hours before entering Leo at 1:38 PM PDT. Positive work-related opportunities and a good time to initiate beneficial health or diet habits. [19:43] On September 22nd, the Moon in Leo opposes Saturn in Aquarius at 4:07 AM PDT. This Void-of-Course period will last for almost 21 hours (!!!) before entering Virgo on September 23rd at 12:53 AM PDT. Cultivate emotional self-sufficiency and confidence.. [21:26] The Moon in Virgo conjuncts Mercury at 5:49 AM PDT on September 25th and is VOC for about four hours before entering Libra at 9:43 AM PDT. A time to gain clarity about ourselves in preparation for the New Moon in Libra later that day. [22:55] At 10:46 PM PDT on September 25, Venus (Virgo 26°9') will trine Pluto (Capricorn 26°9'). Babes Golf is an organization dedicated to introducing new golfers to the game. Our mission is to make golf fun and welcoming to all.  Membership Our membership offers an introduction to golf, clinics, and a network for the golfer looking to take their game to the next level.   Alex Andersen was born in San Jose , California near Hollister a small farming community. After graduating from San Diego Sate College she worked in a variety of professions trying to figure out what she really wanted to do that included her having her own business. Alex had a passion about wanting to start a business but just couldn't figure out what? The young entrepreneur actually then fell into it by going on a vacation where there wasn't too much to do so for the heck of it, she played some golf. The light bulb went on for the young entrepreneur and Babes Golf was born! The objective is for women who want to learn the game, play the game without the usual social stigma' that can go with it from Clubs and men players can do so and have fun at the same time. Alex gets a big kick out of seeing others have fun while playing the wonderful game of golf. She enjoys seeing new members getting excited about the game and the friendships that are formed. Babes Golf maybe a household name in time to come but for now there are 60 women that have joined in the last six months alone. Babes Golf is now an official Club of the SCGA. Who knows just maybe this young lady will take her passion of Babes Golf across the country and end up with thousands of members reviving the ancient game of golf in clubs that would love the patronage.
