James Cameron-Wilson is impressed that the Odyssey is so popular that it took almost the same in its second weekend as its first. He was initially infuriated by #13 Animal Farm, an animated version of Orwell's novella made by Andy Serkis. Although heavily updated for a modern audience, the spine of the story remains, the animation is top-notch and the chilling tale seems more relevant and prophetic than ever, even if it is unclear who it is aimed at. He was left cold and dispirited by The Dink, an Apple TV+ movie from Ben Stiller about pickleball. Every joke comes with a gag warning, with the music being annoyingly leading. Netflix's Elize: Shadow of a Woman, a true tale about a murderess was unengaging and played like yet another of the channel's sensational and lurid true-crime tales. It made James go out and see The Invite again to cleanse his movie palate. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

322. When Do Fandoms Turn ‘Toxic’?

Fantastical Truth

That's how it starts. The fever. The rage. The feeling of powerlessness. That turns good fans
toxic. How does this toxification happen? Or does it happen? Maybe it's all the fault of big corporations. Or social media. Or foreign adversaries poisoning the discourse. In either case, we need discernment to sort honest criticism from harshest cynicism. Episode sponsors Enclave Publishing: Worlds Collide by Clint Hall Above the Circle of Earth (softcover) by E. Stephen Burnett Iffy Eats Monsters for Breakfast by Bryan Timothy Mitchell Lorehaven Guild: July 2026 book quest for The Silver Chair Mission update New at Lorehaven, Daniel Whyte IV's Onscreen article: Supergirl Strives to Be Good, but Struggles to Save a Disempowered Movie. Reviews are currently on hiatus, but we have over 380 of those! Subscribe free to get updates and join the Lorehaven Guild. Critics are writing off famous fantasies, and we concede their demise. We also believe in an Author who surprises us with epic resurrection. Listen to episode 307. 1. They don't—some of this is legit criticism. Quick snack from the Concession Stand. We've talked about this. Big corporations selling bad storytelling have blamed “toxic fans.” Disney tried this against fans who disliked Star Wars TV shows. They maybe learned their lesson and didn't try it with Snow White. And even the current DC regime didn't do that much with Supergirl. In this case, studios may be driven to these scripts by leftist media. In fact, look for some media pundits to do this against Andy Serkis. But the fans may just be saying, “That's not for me.” Loudly. Often the fans have legitimate reasons for loudly rejecting stories. Stephen feels this way about previous and current DC hero movies. But in the past, the studio lied to DC fans and called them “toxic.” Even some false criticisms have some truth mixed into them. Fans claimed an actor called “Elliot Page” was playing Achilles. It turned out she wasn't; she played another soldier character. But this is still a gender-bend. And that character replaces Achilles. So what angry fans told you was true, from a certain point of view. In either case, this isn't “toxic.” That label implies a kind of sin. One may spy the familiar hues of the old fundamentalist legalism. But if you can't call something sin, don't manipulatively imply it is. Sin is binary. Actions are motivated by idolatry or by faithfulness. And anything that isn't an actual sin is just creative differences. 2. Fans may see actual folly, but overreact. Nevertheless, some fans have too much fun booing the screen. This is best illustrated by the infamous “Cinema Sins” channel. Its maker monetizes constant, often foolish movie nitpicking. This impulse, when it catches, ruins otherwise good franchises. Most recently, some anti-fans did want Christopher Nolan to fail. They did spread lies about Odyssey casting as if these were fact. Meanwhile, sociopolitical agitators slander Greta Gerwig's Narnia. They claimed as fact “Meryl Streep is playing Aslan.” Unconfirmed. Frankly, Stephen believes this could be Netflix's rope-a-dope tactic. If/when we hear Ciarán Hinds voices Aslan, the goals get moved. Fans may then easily forgive “race-swapping” or era-changing. We'd miss the real crime: ignoring Lewis's original 1900s setting! So don't get played either by studio false-flag ops or the agitators. Yet a few YouTubers, known for criticism, can be more balanced. Behind their loud clickbaity titles and aggression is an earnest side. Example: Gary Buechler says he earns just as much from positivity. In fact, his whole TV interview (even on Piers Morgan) is healthier. Stephen enjoys these YouTube roasts, but also these critics’ praise. For example, it's been a pleasure to see Buechler loving One Piece. 3. Later they become lost in sinful cynicism. We do need legitimate or balanced criticism, shared reluctantly. Alas, some of these voices do take over factions of our culture. This is the hateful, spiteful, deconstructive impulse from actual sin. We see this in many political movements that despise creativity. Often they are spreading lies and subversion more than big studios. One could conclude these “critics” aren't even happy being critical. And we see this from certain Christians who have axes to grind. Zack and Stephen see some voices only cursing cultural darkness. They are selling negativity and/or implied solutions (they made up). But at least the faulted corporations did try making new things! We're back to the adage, “Don't curse the darkness; light a candle.” Christianity gives no moral clearance for “professional cynics.” Our worldview is eternally positive. No matter the evils we see. And even non-Christian humanists ought to catch biblical optimism. Com station Top question for listeners Have you ever been accused of being a “toxic fan”? Next on Fantastical Truth Everyone's talking about that new release from Christopher Nolan, the feature film that is just so big that it's one everyone oughtta see. Zack plans to see it. Stephen may eventually get there. Meanwhile, what about that book by Greek poet Homer that changed the course of our world's epic storytelling? Dramatist and author Phil Lollar—no stranger to that name!— will return to the studio for our tour of The Odyssey.

YOUNG WASHINGTON is the story of American mythology, and its founder George Washington, when he was but a twink and the empire he was about to preside over was but a twinkle in King George's eye. Production company Angel Studios -- the A24 of conservative propaganda -- pumped this one out as a July 4 special, and the film features Gollum actor and frequent Angel Studios collaborator Andy Serkis. Serkis recently helmed an animated version of ANIMAL FARM, with a star-studded cast, produced by Angel Studios. YOUNG WASHINGTON is not without its celebrities; Kelsey Grammer cameos, and Mary-Louise Parker (WEEDS) phones in a terrible performance as Washington's mother, Mary. The film chooses to depict a section of Washington's life entirely from when he was a subject under British rule -- a choice that proves to be one of the film's biggest weaknesses. We go to the movies on July 4 to ponder the majesty of America, not hear a bunch of guys with confusingly disparate accents say "God Save the King" over and over again. Not one action taken in the film is pro-America, so who cares? Military history buffs may appreciate the attention to detail that comes with faithfully depicting more obscure pre-Revolutionary War events, but YOUNG WASHINGTON would have fared better as a meme movie with less accuracy. We want the cherry tree. We want the wooden teeth. We want to cross the Delaware. We got none of that. Angel Studios needs to think hard about what it means to produce actually good propaganda and put it into action, quick -- or else they choose to alienate their most annoying and least loyal fans (us). Christopher Nolan fully became Christopher Nolan with The Prestige—a masterpiece that juggles seven interweaving timelines, multiple perspectives, and red herrings that all snap into focus. Join Laci and Matt for a behind-the-scenes deep dive into how Nolan transformed Christopher Priest's novel into cinema's ultimate puzzle box, plus the career impact this movie had on everything he made after. Laci and Matt go through the history of this movie, starting with the novel by Christopher Priest that inspired it. Then they go behind the scenes of the movie and talk about the Nolan brothers' yearslong struggle to adapt it. One issue for Nolan: Magic on screen is not exciting like magic is in person. So instead,  After that, a look at Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, and how each of their upbringings and acting styles informs the characters they play. Not only that, Jackman, Bale, Angier, and Borden all reflect parts of Christopher Nolan's schizophrenic directorial personality, torn between a populist, a puzzle maker, a hoity-toity artiste, and a crowd pleaser. Then: The Prestige. We discuss it in depth, theorize about all kinds of weird crap that's going on in the background of the movie, and gush over Bale, Jackman, Michael Caine, and Rebecca Hall, and marvel at how Nolan managed to pull off this magic trick of a movie.   Watch this episode in full on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pdPkvpEMCw0  No new episode next week (July 3, 2026). Spider Noir's New Trailer, DCU Changes, and a trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. The official trailer for Prime Video's Spider-Noir was released on Saturday during Mexico City's CCXP pop culture festival. In addition to showcasing our most significant looks at Nicolas Cage in the role, gumshoe Ben Reilly, alongside glimpses of villains Sandman, Electro, Tombstone and Brendan Gleeson's yet-to-be-named mob boss character, the trailer also emphasized the series availability to stream in true noir black and white, or color which they have dubbed “True-Hue Full Color”. Saturday's CCXP Mexico was also the site for HBO Max's unveiling of a new official teaser trailer for House of the Dragon's third season. In typical Game of Thrones fashion, the one minute 55 second teaser hints at power struggles and with high production value on display seemed to deliver on the cast members and showrunners promises of more battles, blood and, of course, dragons. It's been a little quiet on the DCU front outside of last week's Clayface trailer, but we now have multiple updates on multiple projects in the cooker, or perhaps not. First, James Gunn revealed that the DCU movie The Authority is no longer in active development. First announced in he and Peter Safrans' 2023 DCU announcements, Gunn said the film's script “wasn't there” and that it didn't fit into the larger DCU. And regarding the franchise's streaming output, HBO and DC temporarily removed the Lanterns trailer from all official platforms without explanation, possibly due to a music licensing issue with a Bruce Springsteen track used in the teaser; but the trailer is now live again with the song in question removed and added text indicating an August release for the series.Lionsgate's Michael set the record for biggest opening weekend for a musical biopic with $97M domestically and $217M globally, dethroning The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and surpassing the previous record held by Straight Outta Compton at $60.2M.Paramount has released the first teaser trailer for season 4 of Star Trek Strange New Worlds and announced a release date. The upcoming season premiere will debut globally on July 23. The 10-episode season rolls out weekly on Thursdays through Sept. 24Studios and streamers are currently bidding on a feature adaptation of the Battlefield video games which has Mission Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie attached to write and direct and Sinners star Michael B. Jordan attached to produce and possibly star.As the final season of Prime Video's The Boys comes to a close, the streamer has confirmed that spin off series Gen V will end with the previously aired season 2 and will not continue for a third season and that series prequel Vought Rising will debut sometime in 2027.AppleTV has announced that season 4 of Ted Lasso will debut on August 5th and have released a first look teaser trailer for the upcoming season.Laura Dern has joined the cast of season 4 of HBO's The White Lotus. In an interview with CinemaHub, Andy Serkis seemingly accidentally revealed that Iman Vellani is in Avengers: Doomsday. He told her “I can't wait to see you in Doomsday” to which she responded immediately “no you can't say that”
