Lindsay McCormick is the Founder and CEO of Bite, a brand of sustainable oral care products.Back in 2016, Lindsay was working as a TV producer on HGTV's “House Hunters.” She was traveling the country, living out of her carry-on, and relying heavily on travel-size toiletries. While she was staying at hotels, she noticed how many of those tiny tubes of toothpaste she was using and throwing away every month. As a passion project, Lindsay was spending her nights and weekends learning how to make alternative toothpaste that was more sustainable. She invested $6,000 of her own money to start the business and has now turned it into an 8-figure company without any outside funding. We'll talk to Lindsay about switching careers and diving into an industry she had zero experience in, her appearance on Shark Tank and what it felt like to decline Mark Cuban's offer, and how she went from creating a product in her living room to building a multi-million dollar business. Our conversation also touches on how big and small brands can work together to shift consumer behavior, how niche businesses can compete in crowded markets, and the importance of being ok with being uncomfortable as a founder. In this episode, we'll talk to Lindsay about:* Hear about Lindsay's life in her early 20s and what her main goals at that time were. [9:29]* An important lesson in serving an under-served audience, even in a crowded market. [10:29]* What Bite looked like before their viral video and how the company exploded after. [11:27]* How Lindsay found a co-packer that aligned with Bite's ethos. [14:25]* How Bite has considered their higher price point and how customers have responded. [17:22]* Big and small brands are not competitors; they can have a symbiotic relationship. [19:18]* Why being an online company has helped Bite carve a niche for itself. [20:01]* Lindsay's take on fundraising and her decision to bootstrap the business. [21:43]* The inspiration behind appearing on Shark Tank and what Bite was looking for. [23:19]* How going viral prepared Bite for potentially finding a partner. [28:55]* Why Bite's biggest challenge is also their biggest opportunity. Today’s guest is Boston-based interior designer, Lindsay Atapattu, of LEB Interiors. Her spaces incorporate traditional elements in a clean, edited way. We talk about her love of traditional and where it meets modern, which elements are making a comeback, which elements are trending, designing with kids in mind, using color and chintz, and more. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Trials & Triumphs! Updates on Taryn’s house and waiting for the baby to arrive, a new bed and sofa from Ballard, empty nesting, innovative ways to hide cords and devices using an IR repeater, and missing curtains. How Boston and Lindsay’s family background has affected her style. How Lindsay decorates areas that are not considered “beautiful”. Lindsay recommends decorating in layers and buying quality items that will last, but also looking for budget items. Where should families with kids splurge, and save, their dollars? Which traditional style elements are coming back? Decorating for kids’ rooms. What elements are trending? Decorating Dilemma Hi Jamie, The first thing I want you to do is get in there and paint the walls. I always say paint it white if it’s a big room; you can always change it. Get two of the same rugs; one for the dining space and one for the living space. They can be different sizes, or really different designs if you want, but keep it cohesive. Next, let’s talk pendants; I would definitely pare from 4 pendants down to 2 or 3. Go for larger pendants and use painter’s tape to mark where you might want to place them. In terms of the lamps behind the sofa, that’s tough. You really have to have the outlets in the ground instead of coming out of the wall; especially with kids running around. Depending on the positioning you could have cords go under the rugs and plug into a wall if it’s close enough. The best thing to do would be to have an electrician come and if you have a basement, see if they can run a cord and drill up. If you’re having one come in to quote the pendants, you might as well get a quote for that too. Otherwise, I would say forego the lamps behind the sofa and add one on an end table closest to the outlet or even a floor lamp. Now the sofas; I think if you have a basement for the kids to go to that’s a perfect place for slipcovers. The space in the photo I think is a little more formal so I wouldn’t do the slipcover unless you’re going for more of a farmhouse look. Just be sure, to be honest with yourself about how often you’ll take the slipcover off; because it’s a pain! Ballard and others make really great performance fabrics these days, so I would opt for using that on a more formal piece in this room… especially if you have another place for the kids to hang out. Finally, we would all like to see you add some fabric or texture to add softness to your seating so it’s not all wooden (i.e. the stools and the dining room chairs). You have a good base here. Good luck, Jamie! Mentioned in This Episode: The Schwartz House on Instagram Brie Channel Bed Ballard Pleated Lampshades Bissell Spot and Stain Cleaner LEB Interiors LEB Interiors on Instagram
To kick off the new season of Beyond Influential, I am incredibly excited to welcome back my friend and guest from the most popular interview of 2020, Lindsay Silberman! If you have not listened to her episode, you have to check it out because there’s a reason it was the most popular interview. It’s Ep. 112 on How to Be Taken Seriously by Brands & Make a Living as a Full-Time Influencer and easily one of my favorite conversations on the show. When I spoke to Lindsay last year at this time, we were in a pre-pandemic world and she gave all the behind the scenes details of being a successful luxury travel blogger and influencer. We talked all about her evolution from a journalism career writing for some of the largest publications to full-time influencer, and she gave all the specifics on brand deals, partnerships, her content process, and more. Since that time, Lindsay added another title to her resume: entrepreneur. While continuing to build her business as a luxury lifestyle content creator, she combined her passion for five-star experiences and sharing the best of the best with her audience, to create a product that will let you recreate that luxe experience at home. She launched her first product-based brand, Hotel Lobby Candle, and has absolutely killed it as she’s jumped into the ecommerce space. Today she’s giving you an inside look at how she did it. And I mean in detail—she shares every single bit of walking through how she developed her product and strategy step-by-step. Most entrepreneurs wouldn’t give you this much insight, but Lindsay did it with me for this episode and for you… for free. And she knows what she’s talking about—she sold out of thousands of candles within minutes of launch to an audience who had never even smelled them. In Ep. 144, we cover: How Lindsay’s passion led her to the concept behind Hotel Lobby Candle The A to Z details of Lindsay’s product-development journey: from idea to execution Pricing: How she determined what to charge for her luxury product Mistakes she made, what she learned, and what she would do differently Her branding and marketing strategy: How she leveraged her social platforms and the trust she’s built with her audience to sell out in minutes The role customer service plays in the success of a business, why you should support small businesses, and more! We’re all guilty of following traditions without understanding why. For example, how do you recognize Samhain? — A Gaelic festival that’s more commonly known as Halloween. Today the GroWise Be Well team discusses what Halloween means to them and how they celebrate it. From Samhain to the Mexican Day of the Dead, we open the conversation by talking about how differently Halloween is celebrated across the cultural spectrum. For Lindsay, Halloween is a stepping-stone towards Christmas, an occasion that she prepares well in advance for. With a focus on Thanksgiving, we discuss the importance of questioning our traditions and who they serve. Kayli provides some insight into this, commenting on how she reimagines traditions so that they resonate with her. For some of the team, this can mean doing your spring cleaning during fall or replacing Thanksgiving with Mabon, a festival that happens one month earlier. We touch on how each team member experiences Halloween before exploring the German ‘wild women’ night of Hexennacht and how Hollywood has distorted the image of witches and voodoo. After chatting about our favorite Halloween movies — Hocus Pocus gets a mention — Sarah highlights this episode’s key theme which is to find the reason that you partake in traditions. And if they bring you joy, then that’s reason enough. Master message coach and copy expert Lindsay Hotmire loves to work with coaches and leaders who know there’s nothing formulaic about authenticity. To date, Lindsay has helped 200+ clients (and counting) ditch one-size-fits-all frameworks and formulas so they can simply and genuinely align their message with their beliefs, their values, and (ever-so-importantly) their audience. Once upon a time (before Google changed the world), Lindsay was a high school English teacher. And while she still gets a bit nerdy over sentence diagrams, she adamantly refuses to take sides on the Oxford comma. These days, she unapologetically geeks out over introducing a little bit of woo to a whole lot of science, and she’s used her intuition, creativity, and slightly dusty math skills to help her clients create $10,000 to $1M campaigns all without losing sight of their true, authentic selves. Find her at lindsayhotmire.com or connect with her on Instagram @lindsayhotmire. What you will learn from this episode: How Lindsay began as a high school teacher before working on a variety of projects, and how she got into her current work helping entrepreneurs tell their stories in new ways Why Lindsay believes that stories have the power to change lives, and why stories can create authentic human connections What a “validating circle of inquiry” is, and how it relates to a concept called the “phenomenological nod”, and why this is the goal of storytelling in marketing Why assumption bias, leading with what we think we know, is a real problem in modern-day marketing Linsday shares examples of costly assumption bias marketing mistakes from major brands Pontiac and Walmart Why many entrepreneurs and business owners are being forced to pivot because they didn’t put in the time to do the values work pre-pandemic Where Lindsay recommends you begin doing the important value work, and how a tool called the Authenticity Inventory can help determine what work you need to do Why your behavior must align with your beliefs, and why too often we think we’re aligned when we really aren’t How the global pandemic has changed people’s needs and has altered the world of business coaching as a result How a staggering 86% of consumers are looking to brands to fill the gaps that the government doesn’t fill How real diamonds and fake diamonds differ, and how that applies to your company’s right messaging Resources: Download Free Authenticity Guide at https://lindsayhotmire.com/ Website: https://lindsayhotmire.com/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/lindsayhotmire/ Instagram: @lindsayhotmire Additional Resources: Sell With Authority by Drew McLellan and Stephen Woessner: https://amzn.to/39y7x13 Predictive ROI Free Resource Library: https://predictiveroi.com/resources/ Stephen Woessner’s LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/stephenwoessner/

In this episode, Mark interviews Lindsay Flanagan, an editor that he had the privilege of working with. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a public service announcement from CDC regarding Covid-19, a number of comments from previous episodes, a new Patron (Katie), and injects a bit of a personal writing update in with those comments. Mark also reminds listeners of their chance to win a copy of THREE STORY METHOD from J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon by commenting on Episode 123 before the end of March 2020. He then shares a tip from this episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices... You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In their conversation, Lindsay and Mark talk about: How Lindsay had always been into writing, studying English Language and Literature, how her career took her away from that, and her eventual return back to the world of writing and editing The role-flip that Lindsay and her husband took about who the main bread-winner would be, and who would do more freelance-style work How Lindsay had been impressed by the professionalism and style of Angela Eschler of Eschler Editing How Lindsay's choice, in editing, always comes back to story and to language The one day a week that Lindsay keeps aside for her personal writing projects A high level review of the different types of editing, such as substantive/developmental, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading How Mark and Lindsay professionally met as writer and editor The things that Lindsay looks for in a writer client and what writers should look for when sourcing an editor The style and genres of fiction that Lindsay prefers to work on when editing How some clients at Eschler Editing are authors who want to ensure their work is polished professionally before they submit it to the traditional publisher market, while others are indie-published authors who want a professional edit before they self-publish the book How two different 80,000 word manuscripts might be given two different cost estimates depending on the shape the manuscript is in when it is turned in, which is why an edit can cost anywhere from $300 to $2000 The important that a writer always gets a sample edit from an editor that they are considering working with Why a professional edit is so important The way that an editor can help a writer understand differing changes in the marketplace for trends within specific genres Some of the most common mistakes that writers often make in their writing That all too important question an editor often asks: "But what is this doing to move your story move forward or your character to grow?" Some of the free resources available for writers at EscherEditing.com And more . . . After the interview, Mark shares his reflections on the importance of working with an editor who is properly aligned to your specifc writing and genre, in the same way that a writer needs to be thinking about their very specific target audience prior to working on marketing their book. Everyone wants to change some part of their lives. The law of attraction tells us that we change the universe through our thoughts and desires. However, many people find themselves discontented with the results because they neglect the importance of mindset shifts. Lindsay is an expert in transformational mindset shifts. She is mentored by Bob Proctor, a world-class teacher on human potential. This week on MIA Radio, we interview US Navy Veteran and Co-Founder of Minority Veterans of America, Lindsay Church. Lindsay served from 2008-2012 as a Cryptologic Technician Interpretive (Linguist). During her time in the service, she attended language school at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA where she learned Persian-Farsi. After spending two years at a cyber intelligence command, she left the Navy and returned home to Seattle. Upon returning home, Lindsay attended the University of Washington where she earned her BA in Near Eastern Language and Civilization and Islamic Studies and an MA in International Studies – Middle East. At the University of Washington, Lindsay co-founded the office of Student Veteran Life, where she also served as the University Liaison for the Student Veterans of AmericaChapter there. In 2017, Lindsay started the Minority Veterans of America to ensure there is a community of support around the underrepresented veterans so that we may see the true diversity of the U.S. military reflected in our veteran communities. We discuss: How Lindsay was enlisted in 2008 under “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” and served all but three months of her time in the Navy under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. That Lindsay is a third-generation Navy veteran with many family members also serving. How during her Navy career she had multiple health issues arising from an inverted sternum, but a surgical procedure was botched and she experienced multiple complications, spending 5 days in ICU with a collapsed lung. How within 18 months of enlisting she had been prescribed 16 different medications including painkillers, antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. How she then had to endure a number of further surgeries but managed to complete language school in spite of the surgeries and complications. Lindsay recalls being amazed that she is alive considering the cocktail of meds she was prescribed. How she came to be stuck for six months at a medical barracks in San Diego. That Lindsay got to a point in 2010 where she felt that she couldn’t go on. That she was being transitioned between Klonopin, Effexor, Valium and Zoloft almost every month which led to intense suicidal thoughts and how she considered jumping from a fifth-floor window. That she recalls asking for psychological support but instead only received more psychiatric drugs. How Lindsay made the decision in 2010 to get off the antidepressants and then in 2011 came off the opioids and has refused painkillers since, finally in 2012 she came off the anti-anxiety drugs. Lindsay says that it hurts to have realized that suicidal thoughts occurred during times of being switched between psychiatric medications, and changes her way of viewing past events in her life. How Lindsay notes that it is very easy to get referred into psychiatry and onto the drugs but very difficult to find appropriate psychological support. That Lindsay moved back to Seattle after leaving the Navy in 2012 and is thankful her mom is a veteran, as she helped her navigate the VA. How Lindsay’s experiences both with the military medical system but also witnessing pervasive misogyny, racism and homophobia in the American Legion, led her to resign her position and to co-found the Minority Veterans of America. How she found that female veterans are 2.2 times more likely to die by suicide than their civilian counterparts and LGBTQ veterans are 2 times more likely to die by suicide than their civilian counterparts. That she now works with people of color, women, LGBTQ and religious and non-religious minorities, many of whom are disenfranchised from the veteran community, so the goal is to bring people into a supportive community to break the isolation, because isolation is a killer. How important social engagement is to address the isolation felt by minority veteran communities. That as regards herself, she is working on reaching the person that she was five years ago when she didn’t think that she belonged or that her story was unique, or even worthy of even being told. That if readers want to know more they can visit MinorityVets.org which is a non-profit. How she feels that we don’t have another three to five years to address the suicide epidemic amongst the veteran community, Congressional action is needed now. Impostor syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychological pattern in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud." If you own a creative business, no doubt you've at one time or another wondered if you were good enough. Or if you fit in. Or if you really were capable. In this episode of the This Week In Weddings podcast, we're talking about all these feelings with our guest Lindsay Landman, who has opened up about her own experiences with impostor syndrome and how she manages these internalized feelings. About our guest: New York based event designer Lindsay Landman has been producing innovative weddings and special events in New York and around the globe since 2001. Her company, Lindsay Landman Events, has been a market leader in the integration of event planning, design and production, initiated by Lindsay’s trademark focus on the intersection of form and function. Since 2014, Lindsay has been a leading instructor and course director for the Event Leadership Institute, educating and mentoring hundreds of students in the fields of Event Planning and Event Design. Lindsay has provided insight on weddings, design, etiquette and entertaining for dozens of publications including The New York Times and InStyle and in 2016, both VOGUE Magazine and Harper’sBAZAAR selected Lindsay Landman Events as one of the “best planners in the world.” In this episode, listeners will hear about: Lindsay's background and how she landed in the events industry What "impostor syndrome" really is and how you feel when you have it How Lindsay recognized her own feelings of imposter syndrome Steps to take to make these fraudy feelings less prevalent Perfectionism, procrastination, and accepting compliments when it comes to impostor sydrome How being open about this topic allowed others to open up, creating community amongst Lindsay's peers Want to connect with Lindsay? I’m so thrilled to have my friend and fellow master-minder, Lindsay Sukornyk, back on the show! Not only is she a great coach, yoga instructor and mom, but she’s also one of the best conversationalists I know. When we talk there is never a bad conversation. In this episode, we talk about stepping into fear and reframing it as an opportunity for growth and aliveness. Lindsay and I also discuss the impact nature has when it comes to helping you get into more of a flow state (her Alive + Awake retreats are perfect for this). Regardless, it’s about listening to the “whispers” that nudge you in the direction you’re meant to go. And generally those are the things that resonate with you and make you feel good. Don’t know about you, but I am all for more of that in my life! I guarantee you’ll feel a little lighter after listening to the words of my unicorn friend and eager to elevate your life to the next level (perhaps in Costa Rica?). -- Question Highlights: How did you decide to move to Costa Rica and start doing retreats and other things? What makes you this insane warrior going straight for the fear and straight for the opposite of what’s logical? How do you allow yourself to lean in, have faith and get into the flow state at any time? Why are we so resistant to be ourselves? What is most exciting for you right now? In This Episode We Talk about: How Lindsay left her elite career because she was unsatisfied and wanted to tap into her highest potential Yoga, mindfulness and spirituality Working remotely and how to make it work How Lindsay changed her perspective on fear and reframed it as an opportunity for growth and aliveness Triggering flow states by stepping into fear The effect nature has on transformation in all forms How Lindsay’s Alive + Awake retreats help others step into their highest potential Lindsay’s book-writing journey so far And much more… Quotes: “Listen to the whispers.” “This way to the good stuff.” “This whole journey for us has been one of leaping into the unknown and making it up as we go and then ultimately listening to the whispers of our souls, but also taking the actions required.” “When we play and have fun, everything can go way faster and far more smoothly – especially when it comes to transformation.” “Surrender to the magic that’s available when we let go of our plans and expectations.” -- Lindsay is a unicorn trainer, transformational leadership expert, master coach, writer, wanderluster, and mama of four amazing kids. She is living the dream with her family in Costa Rica, France and Canada, where she guides elite leaders from around the world through transformational activation experiences in the surf town where she lives. She is completing her first novel and screenplay, “Path of the Unicorn.” A regular Huffington Post blogger and often featured as a speaker and expert in the media, she is a certified professional co-active coach (CPCC) with CTI and a RYT 500 certified yoga teacher. Lindsay has a B. Comm from Queen’s University, where she majored in strategy and organizational behavior. She began her career at A.T. Kearney, a top-tier global management consulting firm. In the elite transformational leadership coaching space for over 15 years, Lindsay has spoken to and coached founders and influencers at global events such as Afest, the Bliss Project, and leading organizations, including Accenture, and A.T. Kearney, Starbucks, Deloitte, P&G, Blackberry and Revlon. She has been cited as an expert media such as The Globe and Mail, The National Post and Canadian Business Magazine. I’m excited to bring you this Episode #23 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast. I’m just back from an amazing week at one of my most favorite places, UCLA’s Bruin Woods Family Camp in Lake Arrowhead, where I felt like I had an amazing reset…a chance to unplug and notice some patterns from a fresh perspective. It’s so perfect then, that I came back to put the finishing touches on this episode with author of the Miracle Morning for Parents and Families, Lindsay McCarthy. I’ve been wanting to have Lindsay on the podcast for a while now; I knew I had a lot to learn from her about how to change my relationship with mornings, but I didn’t realize our conversation would inspire a collaborative 30 day Mother’s Quest Miracle Morning Challenge that will start Monday, July 17th. Lindsay is a wife and homeschool mom of two kids. She is the co-author of The Miracle Morning for Parents and Families, has a facebook community of the same name, and is creator of GratefulParent.com where she blogs. Lindsay and I have a lot in common in that neither of us could have imagined we would step into owning and sharing our voice and our story with others until fairly recently, she through her book and me through the podcast. We go deep in this conversation about the epic journey that brought Lindsay from attending a conference where she met Miracle Morning author Hal Alred to essentially writing a manual for bringing the Miracle Morning practice to parents and families. We talk about our mutual love of frameworks and acronyms and how she and her husband adapted the Miracle Morning’s SAVERS to create their own acronym, CHARMS, which brings Creativity, Health, Affirmations, Reading, Meditation, and Service to her children every morning. I love how Lindsay brings intentionality and mindfulness to her parenting and how she’s living her own version of an E.P.I.C. life, one rooted in being an amazing mom and co-creating incredible learning experiences for her children. She helped me change my perception of what homeschooling can look like and realize that we are all like a homeschooling mom when we seek opportunities for our children to pursue their curiosity and passions. I’m also impressed by how committed Lindsay is to this Miracle Morning practice which has dramatically changed her family’s life and the lives of so many others through her book and group. I’m thrilled I finally got a chance to talk with Lindsay and that together we will create this collaborative challenge. I have a strong feeling that this Miracle Morning practice will make a huge difference for me and I know I need some support and accountability to make it happen. I can’t imagine a better guide than Lindsay and I hope you’ll choose to come along with us. This Week’s Challenge: Join us for the 30-Day Mother’s Quest Miracle Morning Challenge. Sign up to follow us with daily prompts and reflections in the Mother’s Quest Facebook Group. Topics discussed in this episode: Lindsay’s mother modeled creating opportunities for her children by setting up a field hockey team for her and other girls in their community. How attending Hal Elrod’s One Life Fully Lived conference in 2014 provided an opportunity for Lindsay to create what became like an operating manual for her family The importance of having a morning practice. How the C.H.A.R.M.S. (Creativity, Health, Affirmations, Reading, Meditation, Service) framework works in their family and how it can be adapted for other families. Tips on “Habit Stacking” and adding mindfulness and purpose to everyday activities. Working with a spiritual coach to support self discovery. Slowing down to have the space to create what you truly want. How Lindsay came to homeschooling her children, how she accesses other resources outside of her home as part of that, and how we are all homeschoolers in some way with our children Resources mentioned in this episode: The Miracle Morning for Parents and Families: How to Bring Out the Best in Your KIDS and Your SELF by Hal Elrod, Mike & Lindsay McCarthy The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM) by Hal Elrod One Life Fully Lived Conference Gobundance, the company and mastermind of Mike, Lindsay’s husband Spirit Coach Training with Jenai Lane, Lindsay’s spiritual coach Make Me App Grateful Parent, Lindsay’s blog The Miracle Morning for PARENTS & FAMILIES Facebook Community The Miracle Morning Community 30-Day Mother’s Quest Miracle Morning Challenge at the Facebook Group Announcements If you haven’t yet visited the website, head over to www.mothersquest.com to explore some of the ways you can get more connected. They talk about how Lindsay organizes her days, what it means to practice 1% infinity every day, and, my personal favorite, she asks them some random questions that were really fun to hear their answers to, like where Bjork’s name came from. In this episode, Bjork and Lindsay share: How they came up with the name Pinch of Yum Why Lindsay incorporates teaching into her blog How they organize their days What 1% infinity is and how they apply it every day How Bjork got his name What Lindsay’s favorite phone app is Resources: Day Designer Passion Planner Chopped Conference Namely Marly If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions for interviews, be sure to email them to podcast@foodbloggerpro.com.
