Ever wonder why you “click” with some people and “clank” with others? DISC is a behavioral assessment tool, kind of like Myers-Briggs Clifton Strengths, but I like it because it only has four Styles. In this deep dive episode, I’ll take you through the DISC methodology, how to identify your DISC Profile Style and what to look for in others to identify their Style. You’ll get some tactical and practical takeaways for how to communicate more effectively for each Style. We’ll also go through how to tell your “natural style” and “adapted style” and what to do if they are too far apart. I facilitated running DISC reports for my CEO and leadership team as Chief of Staff. It was a great way to get to know each other better, communicate and collaborate more effectively, streamlined and accelerated us “gelling,” and was also fun guessing everyone’s Style. This episode is about being a good situational leader when a team member is driving you nuts First, make sure you’re using the right word to describe them. Are they truly incompetent (i.e. unable to perform a task, are incapable of it) or is this a training or communication issue - is it a “YOU thing”? Are you “bracketing” them correctly? While it may not be necessary when a company only has 2 or 3 employees, once the team grows and there is a need for coordination and strategic initiatives, a Chief of Staff becomes invaluable.A Chief of Staff is a gap filler, taking on various responsibilities and filling in the gaps in the founder's skillset. Failure is a part of life, right? Not according to leadership coach Emily Sander. She believes you can live a life where you never fail again. Our fear of failure often holds us back from taking risks, pushing our limits, and becoming our best selves. By adopting the mindset that every perceived "failure" is actually an opportunity to grow, we can overcome the fear of failure and live a more bold and fulfilling life. In this episode of The Good Mood Show podcast, Matt sits down with Emily Sander as she shares her concept of the "failure loop.” Learn how to reframe failure as a success by embracing the learning opportunities. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Reframing failure as a learning opportunity Embracing failure and personal growth How the fear of failure can hold us back Overcoming public failures Why staying comfortable isn't the best life you can have [02:22] Reframing Failure as a Learning Opportunity The Failure Loop framework helps redefine failure by viewing it as a growth opportunity rather than a negative experience. By extracting lessons from failures and applying them to future endeavors, we propel ourselves towards success. Embracing failure as a catalyst for personal development and pushing beyond our comfort zones leads to success. Each time we encounter a challenge, we move up the failure chain, entering the next loop of personal growth. By reframing our perspective on failure and consistently embracing it, we set ourselves up for success in all areas of life. Embracing failure as a natural part of the journey is a hallmark of success. [13:19] Embracing Failure and Personal Growth Emily's journey on a podcast revealed her deep-rooted fear of judgment and rejection, stemming from our primal instincts for survival. Despite her desire to perform well, her amygdala triggered a fear of being disliked and abandoned. Through guidance and self-discovery, Emily rewired her brain's association between podcasts and the fear of death, liberating herself from fear's grip. Now approaching podcasting with confidence and a growth mindset, she sees failure and judgment as opportunities for growth. Emily's story reminds us to challenge our primal fears and embrace personal and professional growth through self-awareness and reframing failure. [19:58] How the Fear of Failure Can Hold Us Back Imagine a world where every endeavor you undertake is destined for success. How would your approach change? What dreams would you pursue today, knowing that they will flourish? This thought experiment unveils a plethora of opportunities and breaks down the barriers imposed by the fear of failure. It encourages us to reflect on how much this fear holds us back and empowers us to embrace a fearless mindset. So, let go of hesitations and doubts, and embark on your journey toward success with unwavering determination. Notable quotes: [18:32] Our brains are still wired where we think of our identity and our reputation as our actual survival. [18:39] [19:58] If you knew that everything you would do would be successful, what would you do differently? [20:03] [28:30] If you're playing small, you're not doing your job... and other people are missing out because of that. Giving a great presentation, i.e. one that is both engaging and informative, delivering the necessary information in an understandable and entertaining way, is one of the most powerful tools in a leaders tool belt. However, so many people in leadership positions take this skill for granted. Maybe it's due to terrible stage fright, maybe it’s a lack of knowledge about how to craft a great presentation, maybe it’s something else, but when you fall short with a presentation it almost certainly means your team is going to fall short of the goal/objective/project that that presentation pertained to. One person who has mastered the skill of presentations is today’s guest, Danny Brassell. Danny is a keynote speaker, best-selling author, coach, and results coach, who loves a great presentation and really loves a great book. Danny joins Emily this week to discuss all things presentations as well as the idea that reading can really benefit a leader. INTRODUCTION TO EPISODE 35Many of us aspire to be promoted and move up the corporate ladder, at one point or another in our lives. But what does it take to get to the top? Is there a specific career strategy you can follow to get yourself promoted? In this episode of the Advance Podcast, Mike speaks with author and leadership coach Emily Sanders about getting to the top of the leadership structure at your company. Emily discusses her book, Hacking Executive Leadership, shares how she landed the idea for the book and what she wants to convey through the same. We also learn adaptability, having the right lens to view things as a leader, and Emily's three circles concept that helps you stay cool in the most challenging times. Listen in!EPISODE 35 SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTSWhat is the idea behind hacking executive leadership?4:35Everyone is their own person, and they have their own set of experiences. Hacking into what unlocks the next level of leadership for every one is going to be unique. You have to hack your own code, and go into the matrix. This is the general idea behind hacking executive leadership. Why do people want to be an executive or a top level leader, at a company that they might work at?5:38There are many motivations for that. Some people want to be able to say that they are at that position, some other people want to serve their team better - take them to the next level, or they could be ambitious and want responsibility and power. What do you mean by the concept of swizzle?7:24The concept of swizzle revolves around adaptability. Every person is different. Every stage or opportunity is different. Your ability to adapt makes you the best at whatever you do.Why do you think adaptability is so important for the executive leader?9:33As you move up, you get more difficult and complex problems to solve in your career. Nothing gets to your desk without some really smart people working on getting it there. So you have to think creatively and draw on different resources that you have from all areas of your life. The concept of swizzle revolves around taking lessons from the different areas in life and applying it when you need to in any other area. What does it mean to have the right lens as a leader?....
