Comic-Con is the adult version of that same magic — a place where imagination takes center stage and your inner child can roam free without judgment. For me, growing up in rougher neighborhoods, I found solace in X-Men comics, Ninja Turtles episodes, and movies that transported me far from reality. Discovering Comic-Con as an adult felt like finally finding a home for that same wonder and enthusiasm. With Phoenix Fan Fusion (June 6-8) bringing heavyweights like Hayden Christensen, Kevin Smith, and Elijah Wood, and San Diego Comic-Con set to take over July with its can't-miss reveals, it's not just about star sightings — it's about reconnecting with the kid inside who still believes in heroes, villains, and epic storylines. This episode, we're diving into how Comic-Con can be that bridge between the nostalgia of our childhood summers and the responsibilities of adult life — and why we need those moments of pure, unfiltered enthusiasm more than ever.Tap in, share your own Comic-Con memories, and let's keep that inner kid alive.Thank you for listening now please go back and check out some of my previous episodes.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Case and Sam are looking back at the earliest episodes of the show! Check out their thoughts on the seventeenth episode when Case sat down with Ben Milton and Addy Thomas and chatted about The Hobbit Trilogy! Overview   In the latest Podcast Discussion meeting, hosts Case and Sam explored a meta-review of their previous episode on The Hobbit trilogy, originally recorded after their first year of podcasting. The discussion began with an overview of the original episode, highlighting a consensus that three films were excessive for the source material. They praised Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo while critiquing Peter Jackson for trying to align the film's style with The Lord of the Rings, particularly noting that the addition of the villain Azog was unnecessary. They also pointed out issues with character design and narrative structure, suggesting a two-film adaptation could have better captured character arcs and pacing, particularly with scenes involving Smaug. The Battle of Five Armies was identified as the weakest film, marred by excessive padding and a lack of personal stakes compared to earlier battles in the franchise. The hosts expressed the importance of subtlety in fan service and connections to The Lord of the Rings while reflecting on their own views from the initial episode. They concluded by sharing their love for film and announced upcoming episodes focused on Captain America and Alien Resurrection, while encouraging listener engagement through their Discord server.   Notes Introduction and Episode Context (00:00 - 09:47) Case and Sam introduce this meta-episode reviewing a previous podcast about The Hobbit trilogy The original episode featured Case, Ben, and Addie discussing at 'CPOV Studios' They note this was recorded after completing the first year of the podcast Main critique established immediately: three movies was far too many for The Hobbit source material The hosts mention they didn't rewatch the entire trilogy for this meta-review Initial Critique of The Hobbit Films (09:48 - 19:09) The hosts praise Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo as a perfect choice that connects to Elijah Wood's Frodo They criticize Peter Jackson for trying to make The Hobbit fit the style and scale of Lord of the Rings The unnecessary villain Azog (the pale orc) is identified as a major problem They note Jackson used artificial narrative structures to create three separate arcs where the source material didn't support it Discussion of how Lord of the Rings doesn't rely on personified villains, but on evil as a force ‍️ Character and Design Issues (19:09 - 28:25) The hosts criticize the framing device that has Bilbo explaining the dwarven kingdom's history They argue Bilbo should be an uninformed viewpoint character discovering the world along with the audience The dwarves' inconsistent design is highlighted as problematic (either caricatures or just normal people) They discuss how the dwarves don't feel cohesive like in Lord of the Rings and lack distinct personalities Case praises the Gollum scenes as genuinely excellent despite other issues ️ Proposed Two-Movie Structure (28:25 - 37:07) Case suggests ending the first movie at Lake Town as a natural breaking point This would create a moment where Bilbo has a true choice to continue or turn back They discuss how this cut would make Bilbo's character arc work better for the first film The second film could focus on Thorin's character arc They criticize how the actual film cuts (especially the Desolation of Smaug ending) feel like TV cliffhangers Smaug and Pacing Issues (37:07 - 46:35) The hosts praise the actual Smaug and Bilbo conversation scenes They criticize the extended Smaug chase/forge scenes as unnecessary padding Discussion of how Jackson is good at bringing book scenes to life but struggles when expanding material They propose that the second movie should open with the dwarves finding the door to the Lonely Mountain They critique the narrative weight of many extended sequences that don't actually advance the story ️ Battle of Five Armies Criticisms (46:36 - 55:45) The Battle of Five Armies is identified as the weakest film with the most padding They argue the battle should have been the third act of a movie, not an entire film Discussion of how the battle needed to feel smaller and more personal than Lord of the Rings battles They appreciate the decision to make Bilbo more active in the battle than in the book The hosts criticize the 'video game' quality of action sequences like the barrel rider scene ‍️ Fan Service and Connections to Lord of the Rings (55:45 - 01:04:58) They discuss how Legolas' inclusion made sense for the first film but was forced in later films They appreciate seeing Saruman before his fall to evil The hosts criticize heavy-handed references to Lord of the Rings (like mentioning Aragorn/Strider) They note how forcing connections to the original trilogy hurt the story Discussion of the 'video game' quality of action sequences compared to Lord of the Rings Meta-Discussion of the Episode (01:04:58 - 01:15:51) Sam and Case reflect on the original episode, finding it thorough and well-argued Sam admits not rewatching the trilogy for this meta-review as it would be too time-consuming They reaffirm that the trilogy's main problem is its excessive length Sam praises the costumes while Case notes the 48 FPS format made everything look fake They discuss how watching the entire Middle-earth saga chronologically would be challenging Final Thoughts and Upcoming Episodes (01:15:51 - 01:32:34) Case reiterates that a good two-movie cut exists within the trilogy's footage They agree the first film is the most watchable of the three Both hosts express their love for the first Captain America film (their next episode topic) Sam mentions she didn't rewatch the Hobbit films as they would take 10+ hours They provide information about their Discord server and social media presence Upcoming podcast episodes announced: Alien Resurrection and Captain America: The First Avenger Action items Join and participate in the Discord server for further discussion (01:31:00)

Our discussion about the animated film Happy Feet leads to some interesting questions, like; Does Mumble kill God, or is he a Christ figure? Is he being punished for the sins of his father? Can a penguin experience ego death? Why do penguins have so many accents? Are aliens gods? Are penguins aliens? Can a movie about a dancing penguin cause you to question your role as an evil force on earth? Is this a good movie? Spoiler alert: Both. Probably. Yes. Robin Williams. Maybe. Sometimes. Oh yeah. Not really.   I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Happy Feet is a 2006 animated jukebox musical comedy film directed and produced by George Miller and written by Miller, John Collee, Judy Morris and Warren Coleman. It stars the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving, Anthony LaPaglia, Magda Szubanski and Steve Irwin. Set in the cold land of Antarctica, the film follows Mumble (Wood), an emperor penguin who is able to tap dance brilliantly despite lacking the ability to sing a heartsong to attract a soulmate. After being continuously ridiculed and rejected by peers and his own father (Jackman), Mumble departs on a journey to learn what is causing the local fish population to decline — and to find himself along the way…

Interact with Beth, Caroline, Producer Mike, and all of the DTS listeners! GUEST BIO: MICHAEL FITZGERALD Production Designer Michael Fitzgerald is a California native, having begun as a teenager interning for Shakespeare Santa Cruz and regional theater companies, he continued his exploration of theater and set design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His subsequent move into the realm of feature films allowed him to nurture close collaborations with directors, a creative relationship that he values immensely. His recent forays in the documentary world have also enabled him to bring the directors' very personal visions to the screen. Michael is currently working on the documentary series People of the West, recounting and visualizing the rich and complex history of California's native peoples. Out of My Mind, is Michael's third feature film collaboration with director Amber Sealey, after the Ted Bundy prison drama No Man of God (2021) starring Elijah Wood. Amber and Michael met at Shakespeare Santa Cruz as teenagers! Out of My Mind (2024) is Disney's very first film featuring a nonverbal lead actor with cerebral palsy. The challenge for Michael was two-fold: to create realistic spaces at the character's home, school environments and other locations, and also to make every working set completely accessible, to accommodate the numerous actors in the cast with disabilities.   Michael has always had a strong intuition for how to best bring a story to life, creating worlds that are visually authentic and in synch with the tone of each project. The Strange Harbors Podcast

This week, after a long month of lists, recaps, and Oscar nominated heavy hitters, we lighten the mood with the gory, splatter-filled Stephen King adaptation of The Monkey. Oz Perkins' second film in a year, The Monkey stars both Theo James and Christian Convery in dual roles, Tatiana Maslany, Colin O'Brien, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood. Does Perkins follow up last summer's Longlegs with a potent mashup of Final Destination and Stephen King? Or does this horror comedy fizzle out?

Everyone is a Critic Movie Review Podcast

Welcome back to the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast! In this episode, we take a deep dive into the creepy world of horror films featuring murderous, malevolent creatures—be they possessed toys or a rampaging primate. The Monkey (2025) Osgood Perkins takes on Stephen King's short story in this chilling new horror film starring Theo James in a dual role as twin brothers haunted by a cursed toy monkey. Every time the monkey is wound up, gruesome deaths follow. With a stellar supporting cast that includes Tatiana Maslany, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood, The Monkey brings a mix of supernatural horror and psychological tension. We break down how this adaptation stacks up against other Stephen King films and whether it delivers on its eerie premise. Demonic Toys (1992) Before The Monkey, the killer toy subgenre was already alive and well with Demonic Toys, a campy horror flick from Full Moon Features. The film follows a police officer trapped in a warehouse with sinister, possessed toys—including the horrifying Baby Oopsie Daisy and the deadly Grizzly Teddy. How does this low-budget horror flick hold up over 30 years later? We revisit the fun, the frights, and the absurdity. Shakma (1990) What's more terrifying than a haunted toy? How about an out-of-control, enraged baboon? Shakma is a lesser-known cult classic in which medical students are hunted by a rabid primate inside a research facility. It's a wild, chaotic, and absolutely bizarre horror-thriller. We discuss whether Shakma is a hidden gem or just another cheesy ‘90s horror flick. Join us as we dissect these horror films, share our thoughts on killer monkeys and possessed toys, and, of course, rant about the state of modern horror. King drops some news about his current novel, The Talisman 3, and fields a variety of questions ranging from the adaptations of his work (stuff like the upcoming The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, and The Monkey, and classics like Cujo and Maximum Overdrive) to nerdy deep dives into his craft, his relationship with Tabby, the new Holly Gibney novel coming this May called Never Flinch, Mike Flanagan, and just what the hell is up with all the corn in his work. This episode is sponsored by Neon's The Monkey, an adaptation of King's short story of the same name directed by Osgood Perkins (Longlegs), and starring Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, and Elijah Wood, coming to theaters February 21st.

After sharing some fellow hobbit appreciation, Elijah talks about his upbringing as a child actor and how delayed success was paramount to his level headed perspective later in life.
