Marvin Washington is a prominent advocate for the use of medical cannabis in the NFL, as he and a growing number of players believe it can address issues of opioid addiction and CTE within the league and potentially save players' lives. In recent years, a number of former NFL players have spoken out against the league's prohibition on marijuana, sharing their personal experiences of how the plant or its derivatives have greatly improved their health. This raises the question of why the NFL continues to enforce this ban, particularly when player health is a major concern. Micheal Kydd spent a lot of time working in politics and government as a conservative. While he did try mushrooms once at the age of 19, Micheal has always been as anti-drug as you can imagine. When Covid hit, Micheal found himself asking where his life was going and what type of impact he was truly making. Around the same time he came across some research on mushrooms. He found himself identifying existing problems in the industry and wondered what the government was doing on the regulatory and policy side. His lobbying work on the matter soon transformed into the unique space he is in now. Micheal focuses on clients looking to access psychedelics for end of life care. He's come to learn a lot about the benefits for those suffering from depression, PTSD, and other mental health issues. With a lot of other people waking up to the potential of plant based medicine, there's a frustration with the government telling them they can't use a natural plant that's been used for healing for thousands of years. Micheal does believe there needs to be some sort of regulation, but the question is, how do you regulate a natural product? While Micheal thinks psychedelics can help with everything from mental health to addiction, he does think there's negative consequences of trying to rush it through too quickly. He was noticing a lot of commercial investors getting ahead of themselves. The market has since hit a snag and there's not much investment coming in. Micheal sees the silver lining as an opportunity to get the research caught up and out to the masses. Like with any other medicine, there can be adverse effects, and Micheal wants to make sure we know enough about those to avoid them. With all of the passion Micheal has for this space, it may surprise some that he just took his first real psychedelic journey a couple weeks ago. He attended a luxury retreat that specializes in psychedelic-assisted therapies. Beyond wanting to better be able to discuss the process with patients, Micheal also had some of his own childhood trauma to heal. Going in skeptical, Micheal now says he can't stress how much it did for him. Feeling loved, cared for, and respected from the first moment there, Micheal was able to hit the reset button and experience profound healing. What You'll Learn: What the Section 56 process is in Canada. Why the psychedelic market slowing down is a good thing. At what dosage we begin to see therapeutic effects. Growing up, both of his parents struggled with drug addiction. JaMarr's father, who was killed when JaMarr was nine, became addicted to heroin after returning from the Vietnam War, where he'd fought as a marine. His mother, who was addicted to crack cocaine, saw the pain and suffering her addiction caused and pledged to live her life differently. She started attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings and bringing a teenaged JaMarr with her. “I would see her share her story very vulnerably and very emotionally, and I would see people transformed by her speaking,” he recalls. “I knew that I wanted to do that one day for people with my stories.” Life in the 1990s New York City, though, threatened to set JaMarr down a different path. Held back twice, he described himself as an angry and scared teen who, although he was naturally gifted in school, “wasn't motivated to do schoolwork. I was motivated with staying alive.” That was when a New York superintendent noticed JaMarr and decided to transfer him into a specialized high school devoted to communication, both written and oral. That act, he recalls, was where he shone — learning-driven all the more home for him at 18 when he spoke in front of 2,000 people at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel. Since then, JaMarr's path has taken many turns. After an accomplished 14-year career in the military, he found his calling in a decidedly different public speaking format — stand-up comedy. A self-fashioned “entrepremedian,” he's merged his natural talent for words and humor with his business acumen. And today, as Chief Marketing Officer of Club Nirvana, he's applying all of those skills toward achieving a new goal: transforming the cannabis industry. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and JaMarr talk about what inspired JaMarr as a comedian-entrepreneur to take on cannabis, what inspired him first to enter entrepreneurship while stationed in Japan as a naval officer, and the power of putting yourself out there. What You'll Learn: Why, as a marketer, JaMarr says there's “an audience for everyone” (and how he found his on ABC, NBC, and MTV, among other places) Why he believes in the importance of “flow state,” and how he's seen it manifest in comedy, in business, and the military What sets Club Nirvana apart in the cannabis, CBD, health, and wellness spaces And much more! Today's guest, Peggy Van de Plassche, shares how she went from negative and anxious to positive and fully engaged in life. The key was psilocybin. Working in finance for the last 20 years, Peggy spent half of that time on a healing treadmill. Wanting to stay away from prescription drugs, or any drugs for that matter, Peggy was hesitant when she started hearing about psychedelics for mental health. After much research, Peggy decided to give psilocybin a try as it was plant based. When she started to feel its healing effects, Peggy closed her business, stopped all public speaking on finance, and started spreading the word about psychedelics. She wrote a book chronicling her journey, Paris, Mushrooms, and Me, in just 10 days. Peggy doesn't want to shame anyone that uses traditional mental health treatments, such as prescription drugs, she just wants people to better understand their role. Prescription drugs are great at reducing symptoms, but they don't actually solve the underlying problem. If you need a temporary crutch to lean on during a tough time, prescription drugs work great. If you want to actually rewire your brain, to change the way you think and move past your mental health struggles, psychedelics are worth looking into. What You'll Learn: How to figure out the right dose for you. Why you need to be intentional about psychedelic treatment. What neuroplasticity is. And much more! Favorite Quote: “I've always looked at prescribed drugs as solving the symptoms, but not treating the problem.” -Peggy Van de Plassche How to Get Involved: LinkedIn Twitter ______________________________________________________________________ Gary Roberts, the host of the Good Dudes Grow podcast, is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based not only around creating and selling high-quality CBD products, but one that is on a mission to change the landscape on how mental health and addiction are treated. Can cannabis and psychedelic drugs make breast cancer treatment more effective? Today's guest, Nicole Dimonda, says yes. She's experienced the success first hand as she incorporated it into her own cancer treatment. Prior to her own diagnosis, Nicole operated a delivery service in the recreational cannabis industry. During this time, she started to get a lot of inquiries on how to dose for everything from autism to cancer. Wanting to help, Nicole began to research the medical side of both cannabis and psychedelics. Then, in 2018, Nicole was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. She took all the knowledge she had gained and the success she had seen with others, and she advocated for herself. Not wanting to face a long road of chemo, radiation, and a hysterectomy, Nicole decided to give cannabis and psilocybin a try. In just 5 months, with only 3 chemo treatments, Nicole's doctors were amazed to see no more metabolic activity. Crediting those drugs with saving her life, Nicole set out to publish the first ever case study proving that cannabis and psilocybin can aid in cancer treatment. Beyond promoting the case study and getting it out to as many doctors as possible, Nicole says there will be clinical trials starting in London to test the formulations. What You'll Learn: How cannabis aids in the chemo process. What other countries are doing in the medicinal marijuana arena. How to advocate for yourself with doctors. And much more Favorite Quote: “If other countries are recognizing this as something that helps patients, we just don't understand why it's not moving here the way it needs to be.” -Nicole Dimonda How to Get Involved: Grace Health and Wellness Facebook ______________________________________________________________________ Gary Roberts, the host of the Good Dudes Grow podcast, is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based not only around creating and selling high-quality CBD products, but one that is on a mission to change the landscape on how mental health and addiction are treated. Bob Eschino didn't find the cannabis industry. It found him. It started when he saw the positive impact cannabis provided for his grandmother, who wasn't finding that pharmaceuticals cured her pain as she neared the end of her life. Bob's brother had a cookie company and grew on the side — meaning he had access to trim. So, he started infusing cookies for their grandmother, and the benefits were immediate. “I saw how it helped her pain and helped her sleep and helped her appetite,” he says. “It helped her attitude. I watched it work for someone I loved and, you know, once you see that you can't go back. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.” Today, as the president and founder of Medically Correct, a company he launched with food expert and serial entrepreneur Rick Scarpello, he's the No.1 cannabis-infused edibles producer in Colorado. But he didn't grow his business (pun intended) to this stage overnight. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Bob talk about Bob's connection to the plant, as well as the challenges facing the cannabis and CBD industries today. What You'll Learn: Why Bob believes cannabis and CBD can solve for three of the main threats to people's well-being in the U.S. today: alcohol addiction, cigarettes, and opioids The types of edibles he's become known for (it helps that his partner is a classically trained pastry chef) What's next for the industry And much more! You might say Anthony Pagliaro has done a little of everything. He has been a volunteer firefighter and an EMT. A medical assistant, a phlebotomist, and a registered nurse. A nutritionist, a personal trainer, and a wellness coach. An MMA fighter and an Air Force vet. And he's also an actor and a stuntman, with credits that include work as Chris Pratt's stand-in. As he goes from one challenge to the next, what's the one thing that helps him maximize his body and mind? CBD. But that wasn't always the case. “I never believed in CBD,” he recalls. “I never believed in the whole ‘marijuana's going to save you' this and that. I thought of it as ‘You're getting high. Leave me the h*** alone.” As a pro fighter and nurse who was used to getting randomly drug tested, Anthony wasn't interested. Until his work within the wellness space ultimately changed his mind and opened his eyes to the healing powers of CBD. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary, and Anthony talk about the need to keep not only your body but your mind sharp as a fighter, how Anthony came to advocate for CBD as a tool for wellness, and what some of his best “backstage” stories from acting are (hint: they star the drinking talents of a couple of notable actors). Dr. Jacob Vigil was coming up for tenure at the University of New Mexico, where he still works as an Associate Professor of Psychology, when he decided to take a step back and truly take stock of his life's impact. “I started to look at my own work and a lot of the work around me, and it didn't seem like a lot of those efforts were actually amounting to improvements in our society,” he recalls. “I looked in the mirror and thought that I could do more than I'm currently doing. And at that time, I also opened my eyes to all the suffering that was taking place around me.” Everywhere he looked, Dr. Vigil saw pain, in his community and in society. Specifically, he saw a lot of what he calls “secondary victimization” — or a lack of efficacy from traditional pharmaceuticals, as well as the harm that comes from the culture of dependency they've created. There had to be another way to relieve pain more holistically, he thought. That's when he decided to dive deeper into studying cannabis. Today a noted cannabis researcher, Director of the Medical Cannabis Research Fund and creator of the Cannabis Connection University, Dr. Vigil shares resources and education around a topic that's been underpriortized by other academics. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary hears from Dr. Vigil about what some of those learnings are, and how they can be applied to treat everything from anxiety and depression to insomnia and chronic pain. What You'll Learn: Why Dr. Vigil calls cannabis a “super medication” and an “existential threat to the pharmaceutical industry” What impact cannabis has on the endocannabinoid system (and what exactly that means) Why big pharma isn't empowering people to take responsibility for their own health And much more! Ever been told that professional sports and cannabis don't mix? Stigmas are hard to break, but CBD may well be a better way to manage physical and mental stress for competitive athletes than traditional treatments--and may even be on its way to more widespread acceptance in the NFL, thanks to advocates like Cottreezy. Cottreezy was born into a football family with a father and uncle who both broke barriers as Black athletes in the NFL. He played for the Minnesota Vikings, the Frankfurt Galaxy/ RHEIN Fire, and the San Diego Chargers. Over the course of a physically-demanding career, Cottreezy's experiences managing injury drew him to explore the benefits of CBD for athletes. Today, he's an expert on cultivating cannabis and is focused on educating people about its benefits and writing and releasing his own music. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Cottreezy and Gary break down the stigma around cannabis to reframe the way we think about sports medicine and athletes' well-being. They discuss how CBD can support health and promote productivity on the field and in other workplaces, and how Cottreezy is leading conversations that he hopes will bring policy reform and culture change to the NFL, and help athletes in every sport thrive. Listen in for an episode that will debunk everything you thought you knew about cannabis in professional sports. What You'll Learn: How CBD can support athletes (and anyone) with pain reduction, injury recovery, PTSD, and anxiety--without clouding your mind Why the NFL's double standards for substance use (think opiate prescriptions and alcohol sponsorships alongside the league's strict bans on cannabis use)--do more harm than good What Cottreezy is up to today--from his work uniting Black and indigenous cannabis growers to protect the planet, to standing on the frontlines of the BLM movement and indigenous community issues, to releasing new music in 2021 (and why his forthcoming LP is worth the wait) And much more! Favorite Quote: “The stigma of [cannabis use] that people have to understand [...] is that the CBD aspect of it is 100% what you would need [in high pressure situations] because it doesn't relax you. It keeps you sharper. Hell, it even clears you out. The first time I had really good CBD [...] my eyes lifted up. [...] It literally cleared me off. At just 3 years old, the physical torture of Steven Twohig by his stepmother began. It would instill in him a deep-seated pain that he would carry on into adulthood. Desperately looking for healing, Steven was introduced to shadow work. He knew right away there was something there, and he began to study it in depth. For the next 10 years, Steven would work for world-renowned speaker, Tony Robbins. Studying how Tony operated, Steven continued to practice shadow work on the side. Through his work in the self-help world, he was introduced to ayahuasca. Unfortunately, he couldn't get away to attend a ceremony in Peru. When Steven and his family moved to Florida, he found that there was an ayahuasca retreat just 45 minutes from his house. So, for the first time, 3 years ago, Steven took an ayahuasca journey. As soon as he returned, he knew he needed to quit his job with Tony in order to start his own integration coaching company. He had discovered that shadow work together with psychedelics created a deeper experience, and he wanted to help others to achieve this. Now, Steven has participated in 25 ayahuasca ceremonies, and he describes it as decades worth of therapy in a few hours. He can't wait for this ancient form of healing to become more widely accepted, so we as a society can tap into its potential. What You'll Learn: How to get started with shadow work. After a couple of decades as a midwife, Carrie Schell decided she wanted to keep growing in her practice as a primary care provider. She started researching the connection between mental wellness and physical activity. She became a personal trainer, got certified as a yoga instructor, and then took a position at a drug and alcohol treatment center. She had discovered that yoga, meditation, and physical activity were more useful in treating addiction than some traditional methods. Carrie would later take on a role helping veterans who had experienced trauma. She made a surprising correlation, that just like an addict would shift their moral compass by doing things while in the depths of addiction that they wouldn't do while sober, service members often had their moral compass shifted while being asked to do or experience things they wouldn't normally. Carrie is currently working on a moral compass program and book. She hopes to partner with the government to make it free to all service members. What You'll Learn: How a lack of connection leads to addiction. What the difference between a gray drinker and an alcoholic is. How yoga is a great gateway into fitness. What the difference between self-worth and self-esteem is. Growing up with a strong family, at the top of his game in sports, Dylan Roos had a very big ego. That was until, at the age of 18, he didn't make the draft into professional sports. Fast-forward a couple of years, and a bad breakup would take Dylan down a few more pegs. Trying to man up, Dylan pushed his feelings down and tried to move forward. Instead, he found himself drinking too much, not taking care of himself, and ultimately unable to get out of bed. Finally, Dylan admitted to himself that he didn't have all the answers, and he went to see a psychologist. Formally diagnosed with anxiety and depression, Dylan felt both shame and hope. He knew he wasn't the man he wanted to be, and that while things could get better, they could also get worse. The outcome was up to him. After a journey of vulnerability and inner work, Dylan knew there were plenty of other young men that needed guidance. As a masculinity coach and mental health speaker, Dylan focuses on men ages 18-23, inspiring them to find their passion with his Prince to King Method. What You'll Learn: Why suicide rates are higher among men. Why vulnerability is seen as weakness in men. Why boys NEED a strong male role model. And much more! Do you know all the secrets buried in your body's chemistry? Few of us do – so we're quick to blame external factors when we get sick or hurt...and we're double-quick to reject treatment possibilities we don't know much about. All this leads us to miss out on what could be the fastest and healthiest route to solving our issues. Dr. Eric Dorninger practices naturopathic medicine through Roots and Branches, a healthcare center specializing in finding holistic natural solutions for patients with chronic illnesses. Set apart from the rampant focus on superficial “quick-fix” medical treatments, Dr. Dorninger works with each patient's existing biochemistry and set of needs to get at the underlying issues behind every ache, pain and worry. On this episode of the Good Dudes Grow podcast, Gary and Dr. Dorninger dive deep on the science of diagnosing a “mystery illness” and what the medical literature turns up regarding CBD's effects on our natural biochemical functions, choosing the right product and dosage for your individual needs (plus a few red flags to watch for in terms of product quality), and getting to the root cause of our common, day-to-day issues to begin formulating a real, long-term solution for what ails us. Tune in for a mind-blowing interview that lays out the most miraculous scientific tidbits behind CBD's healing powers. What You'll Learn: How Dr. Dorninger is using science and education to spread the truth about CBD and widen the perspectives of the "Just say no" crowd What different activities and components of our diet trigger in our brains and which CBD-related buttons we're already pressing (or failing to press) independent of hemp products Why moving further and further away from Mother Nature is making us sick, and how she tends to smack us in the face to snap us out of it And much more: Favorite Quote: "But it's meant to literally take someone like my dad and say, 'Let's get out of Nancy Reagan and really talk about the biochemistry of the [endogenous cannabinoid] molecule. And I've taught 18 to 20s for the last 20 years... and kids don't respond to 'Don't do this.' Youth - and adults - respond to scientific biochemical education. And you know, my big things that I would say to your viewers are, we all make God-given endocannabinoids. These are part of your God-given physiology. You were born with it." Josiah Hesse was working as a journalist in Denver, CO when cannabis became legal there. He shifted a lot of his reporting to cannabis and met a diverse group of people that didn't fit the typical ‘stoner' stereotype. Among those were a lot of athletes, especially marathon runners. Recently taking up running for his own mental health, Josiah was intrigued and began to not only utilize cannabis, but to research its validity as a performance enhancer. On today's episode of Good Dudes Grow, Josiah discusses what he learned as he explored the science, history, and culture of this phenomenon. He personally found that taking a low-dose edible before running made it more enjoyable, gave him more of a mind-body communication, and helped him to engage with the natural, pleasurable sides of exercise. Beyond that, Josiah discovered users to have a lower rate of diabetes and heart disease, and to be more active than their non-using counterparts. All of this, and more, can be found in Josiah's book, Runner's High: How a Movement of Cannabis-Fueled Athletes is Changing the Science of Sports. What You'll Learn: What percentage of professional athletes are utilizing cannabis. What the ‘runner's high' is and how to achieve it. How cannabis can enhance physical performance. Why endurance running is considered 90% mental. Seed Canary was created by Nick Showalter in 2020 as a place where Cannabis growers and breeders could come to buy and sell seeds online. It fills the industry's need for a place where cannabis breeders can sell, and customers can buy, using a safe and secure platform. Their goal is to make a huge and positive difference in the cannabis community. In 2019, Nick was diagnosed with a chronic pain condition, which had made everyday life unlivable. Facing too few options to manage his symptoms, he turned to marijuana, and found no reason to stop. To this day, Nick still uses marijuana to maintain his daily effectiveness and keep his symptoms down. Nick believes in the power of cannabis, and his life is a testament to its powers. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Nick recounts the series of events that took him from health, to sickness, back to health. Next, he discusses the birth of the marketplace Seed Canary, and how it offers an alternative to overseas seedbanks. He's worked hard to create a hub where consumers and breeders can meet, interact, and move products. And he's been very successful: there are over 22 vendors on Seed Canary currently, and over 150 different seeds (not counting hybrids or clones). Tune in today to get caught up on the seed side of the industry from the Seed Canary founder, and find new vendors for your own growing endeavors. After a long, successful athletic career, Jim McMahon found himself with unavoidable symptoms, impacted short-term memory, and early-onset dementia. Fortunately, he sought out cannabis as an alternative to pain pills, and now, his symptoms are easing. Jim McMahon is a former Chicago Bears quarterback who spent 15 seasons in the National Football League. McMahon became a media darling, known both for his playing ability and his personality. In 2010, he admitted to having memory problems due to injuries suffered on the football field. Along with six other retired professional football players, he filed a class action lawsuit against the NFL in August 2011, citing the league's negligence and misconduct in its handling of concussion-related injuries. He has used cannabis to treat the chronic pain and arthritis that he suffers from as a result of his football career. To him, cannabis is a "godsend" that allowed him to completely eliminate his painkiller habit, which included 100 Percocet pills a month. McMahon has been active in speaking about his experience using cannabis, serving as spokesperson for the Cannabis Sports Policy Project and a member of the Gridiron Cannabis Coalition along with several other former NFL players. In November 2016, McMahon signed an open letter addressed to the NFL, urging a change in the league's policy towards cannabis. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary jams with Jim about the role of cannabis in recovering from athletic traumatic injuries. His body took the toll of fifteen seasons as a professional football player, and in order to recover from intense injuries like concussions and broken necks, he needs a powerful cure. Nikki, a NY state resident, has always been a proud and diligent worker. She's served as an HVAC filtration salesperson, later starting her own company, then as a casino dealer, and most recently, as a pediatric nurse. She had suffered two traumatic brain injuries during her younger years, but it was the third TBI that suddenly changed everything. In a heartbeat, her life changed from one of optimism, vibrancy, enthusiasm, confidence, and extroversion, to one of constant pain, withdrawal, depression, and hopelessness. While trying to help administer a routine vaccine to a young boy, Nikki was thrown against the wall, suffering a significant TBI and cervical instability in the process. Nikki's TBI has caused cognitive deficiencies, confusion, memory loss, anxiety, and pain. She found herself unable to work, unable to interact with others, and in a very dark place. None of the numerous traditional medications she's tried helped, and if fact, their ghastly side effects left her even worse off. She had long since reached the end of her rope, when, on a whim, figuring she had nothing more to lose, she turned to cannabis. Little did she know that this seemingly mundane weed would save her life and restore her hope. Cannabis helps Nikki alleviate her pain, reducing it from unbearable levels to more manageable ones, and empowering to her to live her life again. Nikki has struggled to find the type of cannabis that works best for her and to have legal access to her medicine. In fact, she regularly travels from Buffalo, NY to Ontario, Canada for legal access to cannabis to medicate herself. Nikki's experiences with cannabis have filled her with a passion to learn more about the science behind the plant to advocate for patients everywhere, and to expose others to the wonders of cannabis. She has shared her story and journey with many, she is a member of multiple online support groups for individuals that have suffered head injuries, she serves as an active voice in the cannabis communities, and she hopes to use her story to inspire others to never give up. You can find more information about her journey at https://linktr.ee/Nikkilawley On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, see how one health care professional changed her opinion of cannabis from a “bad” recreational activity to a lifesaving drug free of side effects and negative reactions. Nikki found medical marijuana in Nevada, and ever since, she's been advocating for a better TBI patient experience through medicinal cannabis. Now, she's her own advocate and an advocate for others to stand up for their health, find their right strand, and reclaim their personalities and lives. What You'll Learn: How Nikki gets quality cannabis from Canadian producers What advocacy work Nikki is doing, and how sharing her story is helping others find their way Why Nikki's life changed so drastically after her third TBI And so much more! Frenchy Cannoli was a California-based teacher, consultant, artisan, and activist dedicated to the production and appreciation of traditional cannabis concentrates. He grew up in Nice, France, but left home as soon as he could, inspired by the promise of exotic adventure and by the imported hashish common in the late-60s Europe. He lived nomadically for over twenty years, staying with traditional producers and learning techniques handed down over generations. During his lifetime, Frenchy taught his “Lost Art of the Hashish” seminars to thousands of aspiring concentrate-makers. An advocate of open-source knowledge-sharing, Frenchy used social media to demonstrate techniques, push for public education, and support regional growing certifications for cannabis production. We lost Frenchy Cannoli on July 28th, 2021 at the age of 65. Since his death, his wife has been working to edit and publish both a docuseries and a manuscript that Frenchy left behind, which will soon be available to the public. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, hear a one-of-a-kind interview with a leading voice in the cannabis industry before he passed away. He shares many things with Gary; his nomadic story, his knowledge of cannabis and hashish, and his interest in the properties of cannabis and their applications to name a few. Tune in today to remember the great Frenchy Cannoli and come away with a new, deeper understanding of the cannabis plant. What You'll Learn: How hashish is different than cannabis Why it matters where and how the cannabis plant is grown What led Frenchy Cannoli to live an adventurous, nomadic lifestyle And so much more! Western medicine always sells us the same idea: that one pill or treatment will cure you completely. Now that CBD and psilocybin have become more mainstream, we're starting to hear the same thing about plant-based treatments. Michelle is here to push back on that narrative, and to tell you how you can use alternative medicine, not as a one-time cure, but as a continuing roadmap to wellbeing and happiness. Michelle Janikian is a journalist and the author of Your Psilocybin Mushroom Companion, the down-to-earth guide that details everything you need to know about taking magic mushrooms safely and mindfully. Michelle actively covers psychedelic and cannabis education, harm reduction, and research in her work, which has been featured in Playboy, Rolling Stone, High Times, and others. Currently, she's the editor-in-chief of the Psychedelic's Today blog and a co-host on their podcast segment, Solidarity Fridays. She's passionate about the healing potential of psychedelic plants and substances, and the legalization and de-stigmatization of all drugs. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, see the connections between plant-based medicine, healing, and fitness. First, hear Michelle's story, how she came to alternative medicine, and how she started her work with psilocybin and CBD. Next, hear how she's trying to change the mainstream view; she wants the world to see mushrooms as an opportunity to learn about yourself, your trauma, and the steps it will take to heal. Finally, hear Gary and Michelle talk about how microdosing can impact your fitness training and help you unlock your potential. Throughout the episode, Michelle shares her current research to help you become aware of your fear and pain, and move forward into your most capable self. What You'll Learn: What a microdose can do for an athlete How Michelle is changing the narrative around mushrooms, LSD, and cannabis Why Michelle believes that each individual must choose their own journey in reality-altering medicine, like whether to have a therapist present or not And so much more! Favorite Quote: “Mushrooms are not a “take one, and you're cured” type of drug: you take them, and a whole bunch of stuff comes up. What they show you is that you're responsible for your own healing; and that makes it worth it.” Michelle Janikian How to get involved: Find out more about Michelle on her website, or follow her on Instagram to keep up with her work. For Matthew, cannabis and plant-based medicine isn't just a way to heal physical and mental illness. It's a way to correct the injustice of the first responder industry. Maybe the people who work all their lives to save others now have a chance to save themselves, too. Before he retired, Matthew Ericson was a firefighter for over fifteen years. He's a cannabis advocate who brought the fight for plant-based medicine to the union board he served on. He's been working to make cannabis more accessible to the people who need it. He's here today to talk about his own experience with Gary, and continue his work to spread awareness and acceptance of plant-based medicine in treating first responder trauma. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary jams with Matthew about the reality of the firefighting profession. He calls it a ‘mechanical job:' a job that you do automatically, that can lead to first responders suppressing their emotions and trauma in order to get the job done. For both Gary and Matthew, it's important that people start talking and validating the trauma that firefighters face every day--only then can plant-based medicine really take root in our society and offer lasting change. What You'll Learn: What side effects happen to firefighters after years on the job--from not sleeping, to changes in mood and attitude, to flashbacks. How Matthew got into the fight for alternative medicine in his industry, and why he continues fighting Why the trauma from firefighting is referred to as “the silent killer” And so much more! Favorite Quote: “The biggest win, for me, is that we can talk about it. This trauma is so hard to deal with--by the end of your career, you're fried. But now, we're finally opening up and so now we can finally start to heal. ” Matthew Ericson How to get involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. Efforts to improve mental health and happiness will fall short if they aren't backed up by personal buy-in. That's a lesson Amanda Webster learned in a painful way. At the start of her healing journey, Amanda was trying to check the usual boxes — but nothing was sticking. She'd become certified as a yoga instructor and holistic nutritionist, but most of that training she was using to help others, with very little of it being applied to herself. She was still struggling, and despite working professionally in the health and healing spaces, her own mental health was devolving. She'd fallen into a dark place emotionally, was heavily using cocaine and alcohol, was self-harming, and found herself in a toxic relationship. Then, in a two-week window, she was sued, wrongfully accused of a DUI, and in a bad car accident. She'd hit her breaking point. “Things just really got so far down that I didn't know what to do anymore,” she says. “That culminated in October 2018 when I was on the ledge of a Canadian hotel room, ready to jump and end my life because I just couldn't cope. I'd gone to therapists, I'd tried the medications, I'd read the self-help books, and none of that was helping me. I felt so desperate and so done and that I wound up on a ledge.” On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Amanda tells Gary what brought her off of that ledge, how she's helping other struggling individuals with their healing journeys today, and what the biggest misconceptions are that keep so many people from starting that journey. What You'll Learn: How mental illness, being bullied as a child, losing her parents and sexual assault all fed into Amanda's rock bottom, and why her early attempts at healing were falling short What happened when a mental health professional told Amanda that she'd “never be happy with your diagnosis,” and how she proved them wrong The Three C's of Happiness, according to Amanda And much more! Favorite Quote: “We rely so much on all of these things — on music, on therapy, on medication, on CBD and cannabis — and they're great tools, but if you don't have a solid foundation, you're not going to be able to reach your happiness potential.” — Amanda Webster Connect with Amanda: Amanda Webster Health Instagram YouTube How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. Jorge Moral, a veteran firefighter for the past 30 years, used to think he had a drinking problem. It's something many firefighters struggle with — turning to the bottle in response to on-the-job stress and, in more extreme cases, trauma and PTSD. Only for Jorge, he realized it wasn't actually a drinking problem he had. It was a sleeping problem. “I was using alcohol to try to go to bed, because I went two or three years of just taking naps,” he says. “I would take a nap at night, maybe a couple of hours, and that's it.” Ultimately, Jorge decided to try CBD to treat his insomnia — and he's never looked back. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Jorge talk about the ways CBD has helped him with his recovery as a first responder, the coping mechanisms it's allowed him to let go of (including Adderall), and why he sees CBD as a piece of the puzzle (but not the entire answer). What You'll Learn: The role CBD played in his recovery when Jorge (drunkenly, at a wedding) decided to donate his kidney What else he's turned to, besides CBD, to improve his sleep hygiene Why it's important that more first responders have stigma-free access to CBD and THC And much more! So, you've got a couple of pot plants in your basement. How do you take that and build a real business from it? Tony Frischknecht has, you could say, some experience in this arena. He started out in black market cannabis and, after founding a small, medical marijuana caregiving business in Colorado circa-2005, ultimately worked his way up in the industry. By age 35, he owned two dispensaries totaling $6.5 million in annual sales, and he also oversaw two indoor Denver grow facilities with a combined 20,000 square feet of production. To follow this up, Tony co-started a multi-million dollar vaping and edibles company, O.penvape, and today, he's the author of the business book on bud, “From Black Market to The Man.” So, as we said. He's got some experience. But there have been times when things looked shaky, to put it mildly — from first finding the confidence to turn off his other side hustle income streams and go all-in on growing to be raided by the DA and losing all his product. Drug tests today are antiquated and often inaccurate, and they keep folks from accessing the medicine they need. There's reason to think that, soon, this will change. But in the meantime, what should you know about your risk of failing a drug test due to using CBD products, or inhaling secondhand smoke? As a firefighter who's passionate about helping other first responders heal from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, this is a subject matter Gary has studied deeply. “You're looking at people who want to use these products correctly and they can't because they're afraid an inadequate drug test will actually lose them their jobs,” he says. “It's crazy.” On this special solo episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary walks you through what to know about drug testing: the problems it poses today, situations where you could inadvertently test positive for THC, and the way testing needs to change. What You'll Learn: Why workplace urine tests often pick up something called an “inactive THC metabolite” — and why that's a problem Why the ADA is causing some employers to change their testing approach, and why blood plasma and oral tests may be the drug tests of the future What to know about the new “Good Dudes Grow 2.0” format, and what you can expect to learn And much more! Zachary Babcock was sitting in prison, having just been booked a second time after a previous four-year stint, trying to picture what his newborn twin sons looked like. That's when, as he tells it, he woke up. He'd grown up without a father himself, spending time in and out of juvenile detention centers, boys' homes, and group homes. And he'd gotten into hard drugs at a young age. Now, he'd been caught with a DWI and a parole violation just 20 days before the birth of his sons. It was finally time to “break the cycle and break the pattern,” both for the sake of himself and his children. So, he committed to doing exactly that. Today, Zachary is the founder of a six-figure podcast empire, Underdog Empowerment, and he brushes elbows with other entrepreneurs and multi-millionaires on the regular. Choosing to change his self-image (and, therein, his identity) is what got him here — and he believes that positive self-talk, as well as psychedelics, are equally useful tools for anyone trying to do the same. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary, and Zachary talk about what it takes to choose to be your own inspiration, the transformative power of starting over, and how the therapeutic use of cannabis and psychedelics can help. What You'll Learn: Why, at his lowest point, choosing to start telling himself he was capable of better changed everything for Zachary How psychedelics can similarly push you into that “self-talk zone,” helping you to forge new brain pathways and transform your sense of identity Why Zachary currently micro-doses on mushrooms each week, and how he's using CBD and Delta 8 to help with exercise and recovery And much more! Experienced in working as a veteran firefighter and being a health freak, Gary never thought he would fall into cannabis and CBD until he investigated and found the “massive medicinal aspect to it.” Finding nobody's talking about it, Gary started his podcast Good Dudes Grow, intending to educate people, help them understand the benefits of CBD products, breaking down the stigma around it. On interviewing physicians, athletes, entrepreneurs, and several experts on his show, he has proven the fact again and again: “CBD and hemp products are not for potheads. It's not used as an addiction. It's very medicinal when you do it right and find the right product.” Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company built around creating and selling the best quality CBD products that miraculously work to heal the body and mind uniformly. Losing his daughter and father in the same year to opioids, left a mark profound enough for him to start a wellness program and bring an end to addiction in society. Promises Recovery Centers, a nonprofit, is soon about to commence with its supportive programs to impact the community as a whole. In this episode of the True North Man Podcast, Paul and Gary dive deep into the myths surrounding the world of hemp and its derivatives to bring to light some of the best features of hemp products and their natural remedies to physical and mental ailments. Back in the ‘90s, Dr. Pamela Kryskow was a forestry firefighter in the summertime while earning her undergraduate degree in criminology. But being a first responder, she discovered, was something she had a natural affinity for, as well as something that felt like so much more than a summer gig. So, she became a firefighter in the Greater Vancouver area for the next eight years. And it was her work responding to medical emergencies, in particular, that left a mark the most. “I witnessed a lot of stuff,” she recalls. “I saw a lot of people get really injured and hurt, not only physically, but also there's a lot of moral fatigue and injury out there.” Facilitating healing for others, she found, was something she wanted to dedicate more of herself to. She went back to school, this time for medicine, with a focus on the areas of health that often feel the least defined (and the most treacherous because of that) — mental health and chronic pain. Today, she specializes in family medicine and rural emergency medicine. And, as a founding member of the Canadian Psychedelic Association, she also specializes in things like ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and research on psilocybin, MDMA and microdosing. “I started realizing that if I was really going to get a big subset of my patients better, I needed better tools,” she says. “That didn't include giving them a drug that they'd need to take for the rest of their life. It was a contemplation of, ‘Are there medicines out there that they maybe only need once or twice to get better?” In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Dr. Kryskow talk about how she and other medical experts are integrating psychedelics into their functional medicine practices, and why that integration is the future of healthcare. What You'll Learn: How her criminology degree helped her to understand the war on drugs was mostly about “cultural control,” and why more people in medicine should be mad about that Why a session with psychedelics is especially therapeutic for those freshly off the heels of a critical incident (hint: it has to do with your amygdala) Why she calls MDMA a “no brainer” for PTSD, as well as an effective tool for couples and family counseling And much more! My special guest is Gary Roberts, the host of the Good Dudes Grow podcast, a Firefighter, and Cannabis / CBD Advocate. Here is Gary's story: From physical pain to the emotional pain of losing my daughter and father in the same year to opioids. To growing a Hemp CBD Company and Recovery and Research Center based on plant medicine. I talk to physicians, Professional Athletes, and entrepreneurs in the world of Hemp, Cannabis, and Psychedelics to get their view on the future of a new medical revolution. My CBD discovery started out as a selfish journey looking to help my CrossFit Master Competition career but then realized that my daughter had a dependency on opiates that lead her down a path of using heroin. I then realized that this plant could help her overcome her addiction. Unfortunately, the law and legislation were not on my side, and before I could get the product that was safe and viable, she lost her battle, losing her life. She was on life support until her 27th birthday. That day my wife and I decided to let her go. She was always the type of person who wanted to help others, which even showed her death. To our surprise, she was an organ donor, and she saved someone else's life with her own. At that point, my CBD / Cannabis relationship changed to one of helping others in addiction and my fellow brothers and sisters in the fire department. Former college football player Mark Tullius has always had dark thoughts. That's part of the reason he was drawn to heavy metal music, and it's a big part of his writing today in the horror and dystopian genres. But after a lifetime of playing violent, contact-based sports, he started to think that maybe the darkness wasn't entirely his personality at play — maybe it was his history of head trauma. After playing football, Mark became an MMA fighter and, briefly, a professional boxer — which is when he says he “really got his head scrambled.” It was a cycle that kept feeding on itself; aggression that pushed him into head injury-prone arenas, which fueled more aggression. Then one day, he posted about brain damage on social media — and the responses he received from people he'd previously been on teams with changed his life. “I had friends that I played football with at Brown University, and they were reaching out to me and sending me private messages saying, ‘Hey man, I'm in a brain study. And my brain is screwed. I'm at the end of my rope,'” he recalls. “These were from three different linemen I played with that didn't go on to further abuse their brain like I did.” At that point, Mark decided to face the fact that he'd sustained potentially irreparable brain damage — and try to do something about it. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Mark talk about his journey discovering the impact a lifetime of sports had had on his frontal lobe, what that was doing to his mental health, and how making cannabis part of his treatment plan ultimately helped him heal. What You'll Learn: How Mark's history of TBIs (traumatic brain injuries) was causing everything from impulse issues to rage and suicidal ideation Why going to therapy and incorporating emotional healing was such an important part of his treatment plan The way cannabis has benefited everything from his mental health to his creative process as a writer today And much more! At 18, Nick Wingo thought he'd struck gold in his new career as a firefighter. It was the period just after 9/11, and it felt like he was doing something purposeful with his life: “We were America's heroes,” he says. Then, the deaths started — and so did the impact they'd ultimately have on him. Within his first few months as a firefighter, he responded to a call that involved a dead infant. Afterward, he climbed back into the fire truck alongside the lieutenant, who turned to him and said: “You'd better get ready, because that's what your career is going to look like.” He wasn't wrong. Ultimately, Nick would develop PTSD from his time as a firefighter and leave the field on disability after 18 years. It's a diagnosis, he says, that's exceptionally common for firefighters and other first responders to develop, and yet, for the public, it's an association that usually stops short at military veterans. “People recognize post-traumatic stress for veterans,” Nick says. “It's, ‘Oh, they go to war. They see people get killed.' Well, so do I. I've seen murders. I've seen brutal things that I cannot unsee. And people don't understand that.” That's a narrative that Nick, with his new book “Building Grit: How to Fight the Fires of PTSD And Come Out Stronger On The Other Side,” aims to change. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, he and Gary talk about their activism for first responders' mental health, how CBD intersects with that, and the reality of what firefighters go through. What You'll Learn: Why Nick is passionate about ensuring “no firefighter has to pay for their own mental health services ever again” What Gary heard from firefighters and police officers with PTSD after giving them CBD Why it's so imperative we change the way we talk about the 300-500 firefights who commit suicide every year And much more! A consultant in the emerging field of psychedelic medicine, Dr. Julia Mirer's medical career began first on the path to pediatrics. But after graduating from medical school and beginning her pediatric residency, she realized the medical system wasn't exactly what she'd imagined it to be. Namely, she got to see its many pitfalls up close. “I started to grow very disheartened. It started to not make sense to me,” she recalls. “There wasn't as much focus on preventative care as I would've hoped. It just seemed that the tools we had available to us weren't working, and that we were missing a bunch of tools.” Choosing to resign, Dr. Mirer began instead exploring other avenues for healing like mindfulness-based stress reduction, self compassion and trauma therapy. It was around this time she stumbled upon the practice of psychedelic-assisted therapy — something that, at the time, was already being studied in her backyard at NYU — and its “unbelievable healing potential.” Her life, she says, was changed, and her calling found. Today, as Chief Educational Officer at Mr. Psychedelic Law, Dr. Mirer is a full-time educator and advocate for the ethical, responsible reintegration of psychedelic and cannabis medicine into mainstream society. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Dr. Mirer talk about the value of psychedelics for processing trauma, where the field is headed, and how she sees CBD and cannabis-based therapies intersecting with it. What You'll Learn: What Dr. Mirer has learned being part of a study on psilocybin (“the magic in magic mushrooms”) for major depression, currently in phase 2 clinical trials with the FDA Why trained guides are such a vital component of psychedelic-assisted therapy, and what that training looks like Why she calls CBD the “yin to the yang” of our bodies' cortisol responses And much more! Dr. Lonny Weiss got his professional start in integrative psychology working in a drug treatment program, where he eventually became clinical director. But his personal introduction to the merits of integrative, holistic medicine came much earlier in life. “My mom comes from the islands, and when I was a child, I remember walking through parks with her and she'd say, ‘Lonny, can you pick that up and pick out this little weed?'” he recalls. “We'd go home, she'd rinse it and make a tea out of it, and all of a sudden that would settle her stomach.” Despite this early introduction to plant medicine, Dr. Weiss' training took a largely traditional route. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Miami Institute of Psychology at a time when the endocannabinoid system still wasn't understood or, for that matter, much spoken of. It wasn't until well into his career as a psychologist — after “years of seeing people go from one drug to another” — that he started to explore the science behind how CBD, THC, and psychedelics can serve as effective therapies. Today, Dr. Weiss is Chief Medical Officer, Clinical Director, and Co-founder of Nimbus Cannamed, as well as a board member of organizations working toward legal reform for psychedelic use. And on this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary hears from Dr. Weiss about the ways he's used CBD, in particular, to help treat everyone from veterans with PTSD to children with ADHD. What You'll Learn: Why Dr. Weiss believes CBD is “totally safe” for kids, and how kids with certain diagnoses can benefit from it How your metabolic rate interacts with your body's endocannabinoid system (and what the “dose layering approach” has to do with that) When to use CBD versus THC, and why it's important to see both as “tools in the toolbox — not a cure” And much more! Supporting small cannabis and hemp farmers doesn't just carry the benefit of knowing you backed a small business. From a product quality standpoint, there's no comparison between mass-produced CBD purveyors on Amazon and small, boutique farmers like John Sedillo, Founder of Family Hemp Brands. That's because, with CBD, consistency counts for a lot. Too often, folks turn first to big-time manufacturers online that pull their oil from any number of loosely vetted places. In contrast, John is intimately, intensely familiar with his 13-acre farm's hemp plants and the products he crafts from them. The first farm in the state of New Mexico to be approved for cannabis and hemp product production following 2018's legalizing Farm Bill, John says he runs Family Hemp “like an organic farm — not a cannabis operation.” And being in New Mexico's “Hindu Kush region” helps him do that, with naturally mineral-rich soil and weather conditions perfect for the plant. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and John talk about what, after 30 years working with cannabis, it's like to operate his small farm in the clouds (Family Hemp is at 2,000-feet elevation) and what that means for the products he can offer that Big Hemp can't. What You'll Learn: Why John runs his business with a vertical integration model (and why that works for more than just giant companies) The role New Mexico's intense sun plays in hemp production The value of buying “craft CBD” And much more! A lot of women struggle to see themselves represented in the way cannabis is sold and talked about. That used to be the case for Ellen Lee Scanlon. A San Francisco native, Ellen is quick to say she's “always liked weed.” But for a long time, that mainly looked like smoking a joint that someone else — usually a man — was offering. “It was mostly through a guy; either my husband had it or someone I was dating at the time,” she recalls. “I never really had my hookup.” Indeed, she'd never considered it as an alternative to pharmaceuticals and other forms of medical care. But after leaving Wall Street and investment banking to work for startups — and more specifically, a California-based women's healthcare startup — she began to realize how many challenges women faced in the healthcare system. Around that time, she reconnected with an old college friend, April Pride, who'd founded and sold a cannabis company. Together, they realized they were trying to solve the same problems: “Healthcare was just not providing all of what women needed, and cannabis is a treatment for a lot of issues that women suffer from,” Ellen said. Today, Ellen and April are the co-creators of How to Do the Pot, a pioneering cannabis podcast and education platform for women. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Ellen talk about her journey to getting here, why she's made women-centered cannabis education her mission, and how her cannabis use changed during COVID. What You'll Learn: How women's monthly hormone changes interact with CBD and cannabis, and how Ellen uses cannabis to help treat her endometriosis The sexist reason 80% of women have been given a too-large dose of prescription medication, and how that corresponds to CBD and THC doses What Ellen has seen cannabis and CBD do for women with autoimmune disorders And much more! There are cannabinoids, and then there are rare cannabinoids. Found in trace amounts and costly to extract, most of these rare cannabinoids have historically been underutilized, despite their known health benefits. Dennis O'Neill wants to change that. Dennis came to the cannabis industry from investment banking, where he'd logged over 30 years of his career. While working for banks, including two of Chicago's most prominent regional investment banks, he had the opportunity to look at “hundreds and hundreds” of cannabis deals, piquing his interest in the growing industry. But it wasn't until the CEO of BioMediCan, where Dennis is now President, approached him that he understood just how much of an impact he could help make. “He had a biosynthesis platform where he could produce rare cannabinoids without touching the plant and without producing THC, which makes it outside the federal and state regulations here in the United States, Canada, and Europe,” he says. “I was like, ‘Wow. We're really onto something here.'” With four patents pending, BioMediCan's biosynthesis platform synthesizes rare cannabinoids through a fermentation process akin to brewing beer with four patents pending. The end result? Ninety-nine percent of pharmaceutical-grade cannabinoids are bio-organic, non-GMO, 70-90% less expensive than current market prices, requiring 90% less natural resources and energy. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Dennis talk about the future of rare cannabinoids and what they offer that the more common cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, don't. What You'll Learn: Why Dennis views his company's biosynthesis platform as a “sustainability project” What the benefits of rare cannabinoids are including CBG, which has been shown to help with everything from glaucoma to IBS to Huntington's Disease What the existing 22 clinical trials on CBD, as well as the 40 that are currently underway, can tell us about the effectiveness of cannabinoids And much more! As a Regulatory Compliance Analyst at Mr. Cannabis Law, Sean Hardwick is exceptionally well-versed in the legalities of cannabis and CBD. In just the past two years, he's drafted over 17 marijuana state license applications, business plans, and operating procedures for dispensaries in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, and Utah. And he's also one of the people responsible for drafting House Bill 549 — a bill to get psychedelics legalized in the state of Florida. Recognizing that he's joined an industry on the cusp of some pretty significant change, Sean has a nuanced view of what that change means. On the one hand, today's emerging cannabis industry and its attendant laws are “relatively new.” On the other, he says, cannabis has “been in our existence for thousands of years and even in the United States up until it was officially outlawed in the 1970s. But it's starting to make a comeback; it's starting to become more mainstream in society, especially as hemp-derived CBD products are more accepted. I think we're going to see a lot more acceptance.” In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Sean talk about what's currently happening in the cannabis and hemp industries from a legal standpoint, the challenges being faced, and the direction Sean sees things going. What You'll Learn: Why current laws in Florida favor “multi-state” cannabis operators with “lots of capital behind them” — and why that's a problem What the growing demand for delta-8 and delta-9 THC means legally Why Mr. Cannabis Law's bill focuses on psilocybin products, and how this could benefit people And much more! By the time she entered high school, it had become more than a hobby — running seemed to her, with divorced and low-income parents, like her only option for going to college. In search of a better opportunity for her kids, Ashlee's mom even moved the family to a new city, Newport Beach, precisely so that they could attend a school with one of the best running programs in the country. Her odds of getting an athletic scholarship seemed high. “I was taught that my only way to college was to run and earn a scholarship,” she says. “And that was important to me, almost more important than my love for the sport at that age. Because it was a means to make my life.” This is why, when Ashlee got her first stress fracture during summer training at the age of 15, it felt “devastating.” “For me, running was an end-all, and I had to figure out how to get healthy,” she recalls. “It wasn't just the stress of being injured and wanting to run. It was also, ‘This is my future. My life.' In my limited experience at 15 years old, you don't understand that it's not the end.” Ashlee would recover enough to earn a full-running scholarship to Southern Methodist University and eventually transfer to UCLA. But running injuries continued to plague her until she discovered CBD. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Ashlee talk about how making CBD a part of her nutrition regimen not only helped her physically — it also helped her rediscover her love for running again. What You'll Learn: How Ashlee's love of nutrition and superfoods ultimately led her to discover CBD How she incorporated it into her diet, began sharing it with other runners, and ultimately created the first CBD superfood bars The impact CBD has had on Ashlee's physical AND mental stress as an athlete who's always striving to improve And much more! Cannabis can be a natural healer to your body and mind, though many would oppose it. Dr. Thomas Rocco, an accomplished medical practitioner, is currently the Medical Director of a Medical Marijuana Evaluation Center, a medical director for hospice in the local area, and many more. Dr. Rocco says, “I honestly knew nothing about Cannabis at all, and there was no real curriculum for medical marijuana at medical schools.” He got into the practice, much to his surprise, and found miracles occurring. Eleven years have passed since he got initiated into this, and he has always enjoyed dealing with patients, answering their queries, and opening up to new learning scopes every day. Cannabis has been stigmatized for ages on different grounds, and the “stigma is still there.” People need to educate themselves on this to break the stigma. Dr. Rocco has started his CBD website, educating people about the uses of cannabis and its dosage and propagating awareness. He has taken a stand to contribute to the well-being of people as he believes medical marijuana is so much better than a lot of their “prescription drugs.” Dr. Rocco admits, “I truly believe that the CBD is the medical part of it, THC is two, but it's that hybrid of it that gives you the best medical effects.” In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Dr. Rocco dig into various misconceptions of CBD and medical marijuana, its future, and benefits, how they can be a natural cure to multiple health issues, and primarily educate people on dosage and purchase of the product. Tune in for an enlightening episode to take holistic care of life and lead a life full of zest. What you will learn: How Dr. Rocco landed up in cannabis continued his practice comfortably, much against the notion of being called a “drug doctor”. How he had successfully applied the practice on kids and how he educated his patients on this. Why Dr. Rocco feels that dosing is one of the essential parts of the education in his practice of medical marijuana, CBD, THC. What the biggest roadblock to CBD and medical marijuana practice is and how to overcome it. And much more! Erica Ricky Blaze can clearly remember when she first recognized there was money to be made investing in the cannabis industry. It all started with two words: evening commute. Formerly a real estate agent, Erica was working in a college student-heavy part of Boston, where she lives, and on her way home, she'd pass a dispensary. “I didn't know what was going on, but the lines were out the door,” she remembers. “I decided, ‘Okay, if people are out here consistently, then somebody is getting paid. There has to be some type of money in this, and I need to be that person getting paid.” So, she started looking up cannabis stocks. Although she wasn't new to cannabis as a user — she laughingly remembers the contents of her “marijuana bag” in her 20s — the investment side was, for her, unchartered territory. But it didn't stay that way for long. Since beginning to invest in cannabis in mid-2019, Erica has gained prominence in this space, ultimately leading her to move away from real estate and become a full-time cannapreneur. Beyond her investments, she also educates others via her YouTube show on where in the industry to put their money; as she puts it, “There's no way I'm going to make all this money by myself and not tell people. That's just not my nature.” In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Erica talk about growing your wealth while helping worthwhile cannabis entrepreneurs simultaneously. As a former offensive lineman in the NFL for nine years, starting his career with the Seattle Seahawks and ending it with the Detroit Lions, Rob Sims has seen the need for professional athletes to access holistic healing. It's a need he saw before he was a football player, watching the career of his NFL-playing father. “I saw the good, the bad, and the ugly of what it looks like to go in and out of the game, and he prepared me going into the game,” Rob said. “I was able to have a great career but not without its ups and downs, not without its rollercoasters.” Navigating physical pain was a significant part of his career as an athlete. So after nearly a decade of this, Rob looked to the example of entrepreneurs in his family and, with his former Detroit Lions teammate Calvin Johnson, started his own cannabis company. It's a concept the NFL — a “big, big company” where “things move slowly” — needs to catch up to, he says. Because in catching up, they'll help save athletes' lives. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Rob talk about why it's time the NFL recognized the benefits of CBD and cannabis and what it's been like to jump into entrepreneurism with another pro-athlete business partner. Nine years ago, Marcello Leone often got walking pneumonia, and he was getting runner's knee “every other day.” Around that time, he was introduced to a CPG drink with plant-based functional minerals. He started noticing how it was benefiting him — and, within three months, he and his wife had acquired the company based in their native Canada. Not long after that, they developed the bottling facility. The opportunity to get in on the ground floor of cannabis-infused beverages, they reasoned, was one worth taking. It's certainly proved itself to be worthwhile. Since becoming founder and CEO of BevCanna Enterprises, Marcello can now say he owns and operates one of the highest-capacity cannabis beverage and processing and manufacturing facilities in the hemisphere, if not the world. Their facility has evolved into a 42,000-square foot, state-of-the-art bottling facility, and they produce over 210 million bottles of cannabis-infused drinks per year. Recently, BevCanna was also chosen as the executive manufacturing and distribution partner for Keef Brands in the U.S. — meaning they'll soon be launching their products stateside. The infused beverage market for cannabis drinks is growing. Currently, at about $89 million, it's projected to hit $1.4 billion by 2023. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Marcello and Gary talk about the ins and outs of this sector of the industry and the benefits of consuming CBD and cannabinoids via drink. What You'll Learn: What the cannabis drink industry looks like in Canada and other parts of the world is projected to soon look like in the U.S. How Marcello and his wife built a successful business, having been new to the cannabis industry Why this corner of the industry, in particular, is projected to grow rapidly And much more! Chris Duffin's belief in resilience runs deep. As an athlete — who, no big deal, holds the Guinness World Record for squatting and deadlifting over 1,000 pounds — he knows the value of tearing down muscle to build it back stronger. In his life, he's seen that value manifest, too, as the survivor of a deeply traumatic childhood. Chris grew up homeless in the mountains of Northern California. His parents made a lifestyle choice, who wanted to exist outside of society's parameters. For much of Chris' childhood, they were growing weed — a risky enterprise at the time. “People were disappearing all the time,” he says. “It's not the cannabis-growing professional industry that we have today. It's ‘be careful walking around in the woods because you're going to run into somebody with a machine gun, and you will disappear.' Those were interactions I grew up with.” A murderer was camping out near his family, and not far away was a serial killer's hideout. Later, when Chris's mother was ultimately sent to his jail, local authorities tried to traffick Chris and his younger sisters. Chris says it was an intensely chaotic childhood, and his confidence suffered deeply as a result until he discovered weight lifting. As a health and fitness entrepreneur, Chris helps others cultivate strength physically, mentally, and emotionally. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Chris talk about creating a solid foundation for your life, no matter what cards you have initially been dealt, and how this can be a powerful antidote to addiction and trauma. What You'll Learn: How Chris processed and healed from his childhood trauma through lifting Why, after 20 years of corporate life, he walked away from his job and his marriage and built a globally recognized brand in just five years (one that works with 90% of American professional sports teams, as well as figures like The Rock and LeBron James) What a study was done on trees planted in biodomes can teach us about resilience And much more! There's an alarming amount of people who struggle with addiction daily who are simply doing their best to function with the cards they've been dealt. Car accidents, the death of a loved one, a home catching on fire...these are all events that can lead down the slippery slope to addiction. The problem is Big pharma pushes prescription drugs that are nearly impossible to quit while making money on your addiction and recovery, keeping you trapped in the circle of addiction. On this episode of “No Busines and Brews,” Gary Roberts shares his story. Gary is passionate about his mission to stop addiction by educating others to take responsibility for their own happiness through the discipline found in fitness, and with CBD. As a Fire Fighter, Gary Roberts and his team of first responders have seen the unthinkable while on duty. He has faced adversity, including the death of his daughter due to addiction, that has pushed him to not only grow for himself but also to do whatever it takes to help others who are struggling mentally, emotionally, and physically. What You'll Learn: What the patient brokering process is, and how it has created a detrimental cycle of addiction and relapse that is being promoted by Big Pharma. Coming out of the womb with a hockey stick in hand, Canadian Jeff Friesen spent his whole life trying to make it to the NHL. Eventually, he'd reach that goal, becoming a Stanley Cup champion. In the process, though, he'd acquire injuries that would come to see him on a whole host of medications, and he also received different diagnoses, including ADD, from the NHL's psychiatrists. An insomniac, it wasn't long before sleeping pills became a part of Jeff's prescription regimen, too. “I was diagnosed with all these things, and it just came to a point one day where (pills) just weren't the answer. I was on medication after medication, seeing a psychiatrist. It was just never-ending… for me. That was not a road. It was just continual pills, and I really couldn't find the answer.” Until, at the age of 31, Jeff started using cannabis to combat pain and insomnia. And ultimately, that's not all it helped with. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Jeff talk about the value of cannabis and CBD as a professional athlete. As principal investigator of the International COVID-19 Cannabis and Health study, Dr. Denise Vidot's current cannabis research is incredibly timely. It's also the latest in a string of cannabis-tied studies she's done, starting with her first informal investigations as a teen. Today a cannabis epidemiologist at the University of Miami, Dr. Vidot, first discovered the medical benefits of cannabis after her father got sick. He was diagnosed first with scleroderma, an incurable disease that hardens muscles and skin. Then he received another diagnosis: multiple myeloma cancer. To treat both, he was taking a “cocktail of medications,” Dr. Vidot says, and mostly confined to a wheelchair — until he started using cannabis. “The memories that I have of my father after diagnosis involve lots of pills,” she said. “And it wasn't until he focused on plant medicine, including cannabis, that he got rid of those pills.” The only problem, she says, is that he felt compelled to hide his cannabis use, and he also wasn't controlling at all for the quality of cannabis; he was “just kind of getting it wherever he could.” Today, as a scientist who's dedicated to studying cannabis, Dr. Vidot works to understand the many ways cannabis influences human health and educate people on what type and amount of cannabinoids they should be using. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Dr. Vidot talk about her research and why “not all cannabis is created equal.” What You'll Learn: How everything from your brain and thyroid gland to your heart and kidneys has “CB1 and CB2 receptors” (and what that means) The way Dr. Vidot has studied the impact of cannabinoids on cancer patients and those living with HIV What her research about the intersection of COVID and cannabis has shown her And much more! For NBA legend Antonio Harvey, athletics are life. He's spent the entirety of his 25-year career in and around professional sports, playing ball domestically, for teams like the Lakers, Clippers, and Grizzlies, as well as internationally. He's coached, has spent 12 years as a broadcaster, and he also hails from a family of athletes. Both his father and older brother played professional football, and his daughter is a pro soccer player in Europe today. Being an athlete is, simply, Antonio's everything. And cannabis has helped make him a better one. Antonio's history of utilizing cannabis to help his body recover goes back to his time in the NBA. “I was fortunate my older brother, having come from the NFL — and cannabis in the NFL is way more prevalent than people know and people want to admit — had been utilizing cannabis his entire career,” Antonion says. “When he retired or got toward the end of his career, he kind of turned me onto it toward the end of mine. And it was really about sleep.” One of the aspects of professional athletes' lives that “never gets talked about,” Antonio says, is their fraught relationship with sleep. There were plenty of times when, after shuttling straight from a game to a new hotel in a new state for the next night's game, he wouldn't fall asleep until 7 a.m. Just as often, there were days when he wouldn't sleep at all but would instead have to go straight to morning practice. “I had to find ways to sleep so I could get my recovery,” he says. “And that's where cannabis came into play.” As a celebrated athlete who now owns his own CBD business, Antonio is helping eliminate “stoner stigmas” and ensure we talk about CBD and cannabis like the tools for the recovery they are. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Antonio talk about normalizing cannabis as medicine, why athletes' knowledge of their bodies make them key advocates for (and beneficiaries from) it, and how the relationship between pro sports and the cannabis industry needs to change. What You'll Learn: Antonio's journey to growing a CBD business that helps athletes utilize cannabis as a medicine and integrate it into their everyday lives Why dosing is so essential (and why athletes may naturally be more adept at it) The group of leaders, even more than athletes, who Antonio believes needs to vocalize their cannabis use to end stigmas And much more! For a lot of folks, CBD is a tool in their toolkit for breaking out of addiction and ending destructive cycles in their life. At the end of the day, that's what this show, and our belief in CBD, is most about — ending toxic cycles and beginning healthy ones. And that's why we felt we had to hear from Erik Allen on the show. Erik Allen's life started out normally enough, with Sunday school and Little League games. But when he was 11, his parents got divorced, and his life started to go nowhere fast. His mom's new boyfriend, an extremely abusive alcoholic, moved the family to a tiny town in Montana with a population of 1,200 people. There, the abuse intensified, and one night Erik had to come to his mom's defense with a cast iron skillet. After that, he was more or less on his own, and he turned to drugs — particularly hallucinogens — for an escape. Fast forward a few years, and by age 21, he was already $28,000 in debt and had filed for bankruptcy. Holding down a job didn't come easily. “If I didn't like something at work, I would be like, ‘Peace out' and just quit, and so I had like a ton of jobs,” he says. “Everything from working at a tech shop to working at Hot Topic to being a maid at a hotel for one day. I got fired after a day because I couldn't make the bed right. I mean, I would hop around from job to job.” One of those jobs ultimately wound up being at Universal Records, where the pay wasn't good — for the first six months, he wasn't paid at all — but the perks were: “Over a two-year span, I probably went to 135 concerts. I was backstage living that rock star lifestyle.” But he wasn't happy, and he was continuing to abuse drugs and alcohol. Until one day, a girl came into Starbucks, where he worked nights, and asked if he wanted to go to church with her. On this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Erik talk about his path to becoming sober, his life today as an MMA business owner and podcaster, and how CBD works for him. What You'll Learn: How Erik became an entrepreneur who helps other entrepreneurs and MMA fighters be successful (and what those two groups have in common) How, after being arrested for having a bong in his teens, he thinks of the industry today Why, as a sober person, Erik feels he's still able to benefit from CBD And much more! Marc Wasserman, along with his brother Craig, are big names in the cannabis law industry. Both practicing attorneys in California since 1996 and 1986, respectively, it wasn't until 2000 that their careers shifted to this new strain of law. “My nephew, my brother's son, was showing a green thumb for cannabis and compassion for cancer patients he knew who needed it,” “He started out as a caregiver here in California, and so we knew we needed to learn all these laws to protect him. And so, over ten years, we had to represent him seven or eight different times for felonies. And every single case we were able to get dismissed.” Even though California Proposition 215 had been passed in 1996, legalizing the use of medical marijuana, Marc saw that plenty of people, his nephew included, were still being arrested unlawfully in the state. Part of it, he says, has to do with confusion around ever-changing and evolving cannabis laws nationwide — just because something has become legal, he explains, doesn't mean a cop will necessarily know it has. Additionally, there's a subset of cops out there who just want to punish people — as well as specific laws with racist roots that make it easier for those cops to punish people of color, in particular. Terry V. Ohio, Marc says, is a perfect example of that. “Sadly, I have to tell people, ‘You want to get in this business? Be ready to have handcuffs put on you at any time,” he adds. Together, as Pot Brothers at Law, Marc and Craig have gained a considerable following, helping cannabis users navigate an often lopsided and intentionally confusing legal system. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Marc talk about the way the brothers are putting power in the people's hands, including through their trademarked script for folks who've been pulled over. Jenny Argie was a single mom with three kids when, one day, her world changed: she'd been diagnosed with breast cancer. As someone familiar with applying a sustainable, organic perspective to products as a children's furniture designer, Jenny was eager to do the same with her battle against cancer. But as she looked for healthy, cannabis-infused alternatives to traditional cancer and post-cancer treatments, she kept hitting the same wall. “I really couldn't find anything,” she says. “There were gummies and chocolates and things like that, but they weren't healthy. And sugar tends to feed cancer. So I thought, ‘Well, because I know the product well, I'm going to design a product for myself, and if other people can use it, then fantastic.'” Jenny started with a gluten-free baking mix that THC cannabis oil could add to at a calming, medicinal dose. Soon Jenny's Baked at Home was born, and today, the Brooklyn-based company largely peddles CBD wares, from oils, coffee, and baking mixes to tinctures and bath bombs. But Jenny remembers a time not so long ago when the CBD entrepreneur landscape looked a lot different — and scarier. As a single mom, she remembers the day well that being labeled a “weed woman” sent Child Protective Services into her home. In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Jenny talk about overcoming stigma in the past for a healthier, brighter today with CBD's help. What You'll Learn: How families have used cannabis-infused recipes for generations, and how Jenny incorporated them into her company The way Jenny uses cannabis today (including her nightly hemp milk regimen) How, when CBD was still classified as a Schedule 1 drug, she appealed to other moms for help And much more! Favorite Quote: “We're still in a prohibition bubble, but it's getting punctured by the day. Irish Wick is the host of the top top-rated YouTube show “Keep It Medicinal.” In addition to being the first Australian medical cannabis patient, he's also a World Cannabis freelance and consultant who serves as a celebrity cannabis manager. If that wasn't enough, he's also the first medical cannabis patient who might be going to the moon via Elon Musk's company SpaceX. Irish's journey started back in 2017 when he was going through a challenging time. He was addicted to opioids because of years of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and a host of other issues that Irish had developed through a life of trauma. At his height, Irish was dosing up to 200mg OxyContin, 50mg of Xanax, and 20 mg of Valium every day.How did Irish come back from the brink of self-destruction? A friend turned him onto medical cannabis and here's what he had to say about the experience: “I started with CBD oil, THC full spectrums, THC/CBD 1 to 125mg per meal. After that, I felt worthy of a million dollars… My wife's condition was bad; she has epilepsy. Literally, the day she took CBD, the headache stopped immediately. Three days later, we felt rejuvenated and ready for life. Since then, it's just fitness, health, healing, spiritual opening, meeting beautiful people, matching energy; it was all coming together for us.” In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Irish talk about their healing journey with the help of cannabis and how Irish's next adventure, “The Moon Project,” might be his biggest to date! The power of public speaking found JaMarr Johnson early — and in an unexpected format. “I knew that I wanted to do that one day for people with my stories.” Life in 1990s New York City, though, threatened to set JaMarr down a different path. When physicians recognize the power of (and need for) CBD, big things can happen. Just ask Dr. Mary Clifton. A board-certified and licensed internal medicine doctor in Manhattan, Dr. Clifton is also a noted CBD and Cannabis expert. She's the best-selling author of “The Grass Is Greener: Medical Marijuana, THC & CBD Oil: Reversing Chronic Pain, Inflammation and Disease,” founder of CBDandCannabisInfo.com, and she's also the creator of “The Cannabinoid Protocol,” a highly respected professional certification course. Earlier in her career, though, there was a time when Dr. Clifton “knew nothing” about CBD and Cannabis. She'd had patients report positive experiences with both, but within her practice, she was “basically staying in my lane,” she says. Until the hospice experiences of her brother and a close friend, who died within three months of each other, indicated to her that CBD and Cannabis could be helpful end-of-life medicines. So, she started researching. “As a doctor, you have to read an hour a day, every day, if you're going to maintain the level of expertise you need to maintain. I've been reading over my whole career, and I'd never read any of this. I thought, if I'm in this position, there's a whole bunch of other doctors in this position, too.” In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Dr. Clifton talk about her research, why she advocates for CBD and Cannabis as a licensed M.D., and how the body's CB receptors work. “I never believed in the whole ‘marijuana's gonna save you' this and that. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Anthony talk about the need to keep not only your body but your mind sharp as a fighter, how Anthony came to advocate for CBD as a tool for wellness, and what some of his best “backstage” stories from acting are (hint: they star the drinking talents of a couple of notable actors). Arby Barasso's journey to CBD and cannabis as natural remedies for pain looked like a lot of people's. At age 50, he had three hip replacements, receiving his first one before he'd reached his mid-20s. In his teens, he'd already been active as an entrepreneur. But after fracturing and dislocating his hip, his mobility — and, it seemed, his entrepreneurial prospects — were limited. To mitigate the pain, he turned to pharmaceuticals — ”whatever the doctor gives you, you kind of just take” — and by his second hip replacement surgery, he'd become addicted. “The addiction kind of blinds you,” he says. “You're a slave to the pills. It's just automatic. It's nothing that you choose.. It's like it grabs you when it wants to grab you, and it doesn't let go.” After running into trouble with the law, Arby objectively knew that he needed to confront his addiction, but the reality was that he struggled to shake it. Until his friend and business partner introduced him to CBD. Today, Arby is co-founder of Green Roads and a pioneer in the hemp industry. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Arby discuss Arby's path to hemp entrepreneurship, why pharmaceutical dependence is such a problem in the U.S., and where he sees the industry going next. Do you know all the secrets buried in your body's chemistry? Few of us do - so we're quick to blame external factors when we get sick or hurt...and we're double-quick to reject treatment possibilities we don't know much about. All this leads us to miss out on what could be the fastest and healthiest route to solving our issues. Dr. Eric Dorninger practices naturopathic medicine through Roots and Branches, an healthcare center specializing in finding holistic natural solutions for patients with chronic illnesses. Set apart from the rampant focus on superficial "quick-fix" medical treatments, Dr. Dorninger works with each patient's existing biochemistry and set of needs to get at the underlying issues behind every ache, pain and worry. On this episode of the Good Dudes Grow podcast, Gary and Dr. Dorninger dive deep on the science of diagnosing a "mystery illness" and what the medical literature turns up regarding CBD's effects on our natural biochemical functions, choosing the right product and dosage for your individual needs (plus a few red flags to watch for in terms of product quality), and getting to the root cause of our common, day-to-day issues to begin formulating a real, long-term solution for what ails us. And I've taught 18 to 20's for the last 20 years... and kids don't respond to 'Don't do this.' Youth - and adults - respond to scientific biochemical education. And you know, my big things that I would say to your viewers are, we all make God-given endocannabinoids. These are part of your God-given physiology. You were born with it." Favorite Quote: “I deep dive into [hemp products] even more, and I decided it's about time that we find something that can help people - that's not addictive, that's natural, that works. And we need to let everybody know about it. So therefore, I started my own company. Now, this is not a plug for my own company... I'm not selling it. I just want the conversation to begin about this type of product.” Gary Roberts How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike.
