Michael Mann's Heat  On this week's episode we celebrate our 600th episode with a look at one of the most important films of our generation, Michael Mann's Crime-Thriller, Heist Film, Masterpiece . . . the coming together of two of the greatest and most important actors of their generation, Al Pacino as Lieutenant Vincent Hannah and Robert DeNiro as Professional Criminal Neil McCauley in 1995s Heat. This week we talk the film, but as always the film is simply a jumping off point for a greater undestanding, in the case an understanding of 1990s culture, the crime genre, brilliant acting and direction, and our own personal growth and attachment to the ideas, warnings, and lessons of this exceptional film. A modern day criminal tragedy which re-invents a story that has been told thousands of times and somehow manages to make all things fresh and unique. With a brilliant cast including the aforementioned DeNiro and Pacino, but also Wes Studi, Ted Levine, Mykelti Williamson, Diane Verona, Tom Sizemore, Danny Trejo, Amy Brenneman, William Fichtner, Ashley Judd, Hank Azaria, Natalie Portman, Henry Rollins, John Voight, Kevin Gage, Bud Cort, a heartbreaking Dennis Haysbert, and a brilliant Val Kilmer, Michael Mann's Heat is a beautifully rendered, heartbreaking crime tragedy that feels real, lived in, and timeless.  And yeah . . . we spend a good amount of time on that scene - one of the greatest ever filmed. Take a listen and let us know what you think. As always we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. There's this old adage of "Opinions are like aholes. Everyone has one and they all stink". So in that spirit, we thought we'd share some of ours this week. As teens, the British tome, Metal Forces, was a fave. Every year the magazine presented their "Reader's Poll" results. And we recently stumbled on the results from '83 in Issue 3. So we figured we'd give them the once over and cast our own ballots. Forty three years late.  In our "News, Views and Tunes", we pay tribute to Ross The Boss. Musically, we crank some Henry Rollins, Trauma, Fulci, Witchslayer, Original Sin, Stormkeep and introduce Austria's Rambow in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!

Is Lamenting a Sin? A Response to John Piper

VOX Podcast with Mike Erre

Oh, John Piper... Does bad theology actually hurt people in the real world? Today Mike Erre and Tim Stafford dive deep into the intersection of faith, war, and the heavy burden of rigid religious systems that leave no room for human pain. From political rhetoric to pastoral advice, they explore how our view of God shapes our response to suffering and global conflict. The conversation begins with a lighthearted look at Seth Erre's new podcast before shifting into the sobering reality of the conflict in Iran and the troubling rhetoric of Christian nationalism. The heart of the episode is a detailed critique of John Piper's recent teaching on lament. Piper suggests that criticizing God's ways is always a sin, but Mike and Tim argue that the biblical text shows a much more complex, raw, and honest relationship between the Creator and the suffering. By looking at the Garden of Gethsemane, the book of Job, and the laments of Jeremiah, they challenge the idea that faith requires passive resignation. Instead, they propose a slow theology that values human agency and honest wrestling. Along the way, they pull in surprising insights from Oppenheimer, Batman, and even Henry Rollins to discuss education, empathy, and what it truly means to be an image-bearer in a chaotic world. Punk Rock Safety

It's big episode 50 over here at Punk Rock Safety, and the boys have made it exactly 49 episodes further than anyone would have thought. By now, you've probably caught on to the whole NOFX theme. It's not a song title for the episode, but it's a reference to Fat Mike, so that counts. Except this time, we've got Skinny Mike. Mike Rayo from THE Ohio State University's Cognitive Systems Engineering Lab joins the boys. By the way, that's Doctor Ron Gantt's Alma Mater in case you were keeping track. This fiftieth episode leans pretty hard into chaos and systems thinking. Ben is doing some sunset broadcasting from a dog park at a South Carolina truck stop. If you listen close, you can hear Jake brakes highlighting the smart things Mike says. The boys also wander into a discussion about AI's awkward fit inside socio-technical systems, the gap in designing for joint cognitive activity, and why adaptive capacity remains the neglected pillar in safety investments. There's something for everyone, and Ron gets his joint cognitive activity, so that's a bonus. Professor Mike Rayo drops an integrated frame for “modern safety” (or “balanced safety”) and tackles the stupid “safety label wars” that have come up more than a few times. It's a little like deciding what counts as "punk," though, so don't expect that to be completely solved (except if you're the one telling everyone they aren't punk enough, you're probably the asshole). The coolest part of the episode is probably the whole discussion on adaptive capacity moving from a footnote in most safety discussions to the thing that actually makes it happen.   Want to hear how the guys solve it? Check it out, punks. Even though Mike doesn't have any tattoos, mostly has instruments just lying around, and isn't really that into punk, he's real one - and he's a kick ass example of how Henry Rollins defines punk: "Questioning anything and everything.” Get after it. DISCLAIMER: You probably shouldn't take anything in this podcast too seriously. Punk Rock Safety is for entertainment only. It's definitely not a replacement for professional or legal advice, and the fair amount of piss-taking, shithousery, and general ridiculousness ought to clue you into the fact that no one - and no organization - is endorsing (or un-endorsing, if that's a thing) any products, ideas, or other things. Except NOFX. We definitely endorse them.Oh, and give your money to Punk Rock Saves Lives. They're a rad organization that works in mental health, addiction, and human rights. We talked about this! New year. NEW. Different. Better. Not (waves hands at the world) all of this. Oh well, at least there's puppies, blurbs, and recommendations on tap. Pull up a chair, fellow sapphic fiction readers. We've got what you've been looking for. Official Recommendations From Kris: Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid  Kris's official recommendation this week is a historical novel set in the distant past of the 1980s, when dinosaurs and other creatures still walked the earth. Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid is the story of a female astronaut coming to understand herself as she prepares to go to space. Kris says that this book helped fill in the emotional gaps that last year's recommendation of Sally, the documentary about astronaut Sally Ride, didn't provide.  From Tara: Greta Gets the Girl by Melissa Marr Tara's official recommendation this week is Greta Gets the Girl by Melissa Marr. Similar to Kris's recommendation, this book reaches back to a previous recommendation by the same author, Toni and Addie Go Viral. This book has that sweet, sweet one-night-to-forever trope that Tara craves. The book comes with a trigger warning because one of the leads is a sexual assault survivor, although no assault happens on the page. (Note: Tara forgot about the trigger warning when discussing this aspect of the book and how it's not mentioned in the blurb.) "Here Comes Santa Claus" by Mrs. Miller. She was discovered by the announcer from "Laugh-In", which should tell you all you need to know.2. "Silent Night" by Wing. Wing Han Tsang was from Hong Kong and started singing as a hobby when she moved to New Zealand. Surprisingly, she made it kinda big. "South Park" even parodied her back in the day.3. "White Christmas" by Tiny Tim. There's also "Silent Night", featuring a spoken-word break where he takes aim at hypocrites, fornicators, and child molesters. You know, just regular Christmas caroler stuff. 4. "Little Drummer Boy" by William Hung. Isn't it crazy to think there's a whole generation who has no idea who this "American Idol" treasure is? 5. "I Got a Cold for Christmas" by the Three Stooges. Not terrible, but not exactly a classic.6. "Jingle Bells" by William Shatner, featuring Henry Rollins. Yes, THAT Henry Rollins.7. "Santa Claws Is Coming to Town" by Alice Cooper, featuring John 5, Billy Sheehan, and Vinny Appice. 8. "The Night Before Christmas" by David Hasselhoff. This one is extra cheesy, but did you expect anything less?9. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Regis Philbin. This one has a cameo by a pre-Oval Office Donald Trump, who offers Rudolph a job in place of Santa.10. "Jingle Hell" by Christopher Lee. Yes, one of the greatest actors of all time. He dabbled in heavy metal later in life. This actually isn't his only holiday song, either. He also did covers of "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Silent Night".11. "Away in a Manger" by the Brady Bunch. This one only features the vocal talents of Marcia, a.k.a. Maureen McCormick. The reality show element is ridiculous, but provides an interesting setting as it leaves all the contestants vulnerable to an unforeseen horror in the woods of West Virginia. While not as good as the first, this movie is a lot of fun, and doesn't shy away from the blood and gore, and is overall gross throughout. It's also always entertaining to see Henry Rollins play a badass who takes the fight back to the deformed inbred cannibals. Featuring original Dag Nasty singer Shawn Brown, Swiz's faster, darker, and more aggressive take on the D.C. sound ran counter to the melodic, experimental, and poppy direction the scene had been leaning toward in the years before Nirvana broke the underground. In the thirty-five years since their demise, Swiz's popularity and infamy have only grown. This first in-depth look into the band is timed perfectly to coincide with the 2025 release of their remastered musical catalog by Dischord Records. The volume is penned by all of the band members, combining historical interviews and personal journals, with present-day conversations, anecdotes, recollections, and reflections yielding new poetry and prose. The writing is complemented by over one hundred unpublished images. This mix of styles touches on band facts and timelines while also spotlighting the negative space around the band: personal and interpersonal moments of its members and the broader community and culture in which they were immersed. Swiz is a deep dive into the band and its members, a celebration of warped memory, and a unique snapshot of a time and scene that continues to inspire musicians, artists, and fans alike. I had the chance to sit down with Harley Flanagan — punk pioneer, founding member of the Cro-Mags, and the subject of the new feature-length documentary, HARLEY FLANAGAN: WIRED FOR CHAOS. Directed by Emmy and Peabody Award-winner Rex Miller, this no-holds-barred film dives into Harley's life — from the violent streets of ‘70s New York to the hardcore scene that defined a generation. This isn't just about music — it's about survival. Abuse, addiction, squats, street fights, punk gigs, Jiu-Jitsu, fatherhood — Harley's lived through it all. And the film, which features interviews with Flea, Henry Rollins, Ice T, Michael Imperioli, and the late Anthony Bourdain, shows a side of him many haven't seen before. Now, quick heads up — there's a slight audio issue on my end during this episode. I didn't realize my mic wasn't plugged in, so you'll hear me through my laptop's onboard mic. It's definitely listenable, just a bit rougher than usual — but honestly, it kind of fits the vibe of this episode. So with that, let's get into it. This is Harley Flanagan — loud, raw, and real

The 1980s saw an explosion of independent record labels across the US, shaping the sound and spirit of underground music to this day. This week, Daniel House from Skin Yard and C/Z Records joins us as we dive into some of the finest labels whose DIY ethos, fearless experimentation, and raw energy broke away from the corporate music machine. One of the crucial American indie labels of the era was C/Z Records, the Seattle imprint that will forever be remembered as the second most important label in the burgeoning grunge scene. That being said, it was C/Z, not Sub Pop, who released the defining document of the new sound of the Pacific Northwest with 1986's Deep Six compilation - introducing Soundgarden, The Melvins, U-Men, Green River, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard. Founded in 1985 by Chris Hanzek and Tina Casale, Skin Yard bassist Daniel House took over operation of C/Z in 1987, subsequently releasing music by Nirvana, Henry Rollins, Built To Spill, The Gits, Hammerbox, Presidents of the United States of America, 7 Year B---h, Coffin Break and many more. Skin Yard was a foundational band in the development of the grunge movement, not only due to the groundbreaking music they recorded between 1985 - 1991, but also the band members' other contributions to Seattle music. Aside from the aforementioned impact that House made with C/Z Records, guitarist Jack Endino would go on to produce and engineer some of the most enduring records of the era - including Nirvana's Bleach, and music by Mudhoney, Tad, Soundgarden, L7, and Screaming Trees. Lead singer Ben McMillan would form the band Gruntruck, and sadly passed away in 2008 at the age of 46. Drummer Matt Cameron is a world class musician who has been behind the kit for Soundgarden and, for the past 25 years, with Pearl Jam. Skin Yard Select is the brand new, limited collection of 14 songs loving curated by Daniel House and Jack Endino, culling tracks from their four studio albums, but also featuring enough rarities to please long-time fans. This beautiful package consists of seven individual 7" singles, each in their own sleeve and pressed on limited edition colored vinyl (or good ol' fashioned black).
