Growing up with a dad (Terry) who played 10 seasons in the NBA, you might expect that Ed Davis was pushed from the time he could hold a basketball. But his father let Ed's love of the game develop naturally before training him on the court, at the track, and in the weight room when he was a teenager. Ed also benefited from a mom who let him put basketball first, pickup games with the likes of Ben Wallace at Virginia Union, and the discipline and timekeeping he learned at a private military school. All these things helped Ed become a top-10 high school prospect and McDonald's High School All-American. His decision to play for Roy Williams at UNC was vindicated when the team won the national championship his freshman year. After his sophomore season, Ed declared for the 2010 NBA Draft and was picked 13th by the Toronto Raptors. In his 12-year career, he also played for the Grizzlies, Lakers, Jazz, Nets, and Cavaliers, and led the league in offensive rebounding rate one season. In this episode, Ed dishes on:· Why he chose to fight for playing time at North Carolina over starting at other schools· How breaking his wrist against Duke changed his pre-draft process· Why the Transfer Portal, NIL, and mixtapes have changed high school and college basketball · How guidance from Reggie Evans and DeMar DeRozan helped him navigate his rookie year· Who was his worst coach in the NBA and how this contrasted with the leadership of Quin Snyder and Roy WilliamsKeep up with Ed on Twitter @eddavisXVII.

Today we dive in with special guest Lisa Hashimoto Hall about how too often kids with special needs don’t get involved in the world of sports. We talk about avenues that both parents and coaches can pursue to help make them feel welcome and step outside of their comfort zone to help them not only build relationships but also mental and emotional strength. About Our Guest Lisa Hashimoto Hall My name is Lisa Hashimoto Hall and I’m from Perry, UT. I went to Box Elder High School in Brigham City, UT where I was a multi-sport athlete. I excelled in softball while at Box Elder and was a two-time state champion, three-time High School All-American, and the MVP of the 4A division in softball my junior year. I was able to gain a softball scholarship to the University of Utah where I was a 4-year starter. While at Utah I was awarded to be on the WAC All-Tournament team my junior year. I’m also a career holder in stolen bases and sacrifice hits. I met my husband at the University of Utah and was married in 1999. I’ve coached off and on since my playing career ended in 2000. I had an amazing opportunity right out of college to be an assistant coach at Utah State University close to my hometown. I coached there for a few years and then hung up my coach’s shoes to start a family. I had my first son in 2003 and became pregnant soon after with my second son in 2005. After a few years of raising my boys, I decided to go back to coaching at my local high school and try my hand as a head coach. I was able to coach at my alma mater, Box Elder High school, and win a state championship. It was around this time that my 2nd son received an autism diagnosis and my world turned upside down. I decided to try coaching a few more years and do my best to provide early intervention for my son but had to put my coaching career on hold again when I became pregnant with my daughter. For the next 9 years, I spent my time raising my children and providing the best education for my son. It felt like a constant battle with a lot of highs and lows doing my best to raise a child with special needs. Looking back now I can’t believe how far he’s come and the progress he’s made. He is now 16 years old and doing very well in school and is on track to graduate. This is probably the most REAL and RAW interview I've had on the Too Tall Sports Podcast so far. Rashad McCants, was a McDonald's High School All American and a stand out player at UNC. He and some notable teammates won the national championship in the 2005 March Madness tournament beating Illinois in the title game.He is a former NBA player for the Minnesota Timberwolves and was drafted 14th overall in the 1st round of the 2005 NBA Draft. He spent 4 years there before heading overseas to continue his basketball career. He then came back to play in Ice Cube's 3 on 3 league called the "BIG 3". He was the #1 pick in 2017 of that league and his team, Trilogy, ended up winning the championship that year as well.Rashad found himself in some hot water after some accused him of whistleblowing about the academic fraud that was happening his school, the University of North Carolina. He was the only one to tell the truth about the lack of institutional control that occurred there along with many other universities. He wrote a book called "Plantation Education - The Exploitation of the Modern-Day Athlete-Student". He makes some compelling points about how the system was broken and still is to this day. Rashad's stories are amazing in the episode, including the craziness of his NBA Draft week...Check out his book here: https://www.amazon.com/Plantation-Education-Exploitation-Modern-Day-Athlete-Student/dp/1682618285Follow Rashad McCants on IG: @iamrashadmccantsFollow Me and SUBSCRIBE, LIKE and COMMENT on the Too Tall Sports Podcast:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOT1dawh_079qckq7OmFHAQInstagram: @tootallsportspodcastTwitter: @TooTallSportsFacebook Group: TooTallSportsPodcastApple Podcasts: Too Tall Sports PodcastSpotify: Too Tall Sports Podcasthttps://www.diamantenetwork.com/network/brettlorinPandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/too-tall-sports-podcast/PC:52128Email: tootallsportspodcast@gmail.com

David Harrison was a stand out basketball player, McDonald's High School All-American who played his college ball at the University of Colorado. Go BUFFS! He was so good, the Indiana Pacers chose him as their first round draft pick in the 2004 NBA draft. His professional career didn't go as he had hoped. From the "Malice at the Palace", to drug issues - marijuana, to be exact. Which in today's world, would have been laughed it. We talk about his highs, and his definite lows. To where he is at now in life. David is a sweet guy. He really is. You see this 7 foot giant who just wins you over with his smile, and his intellect. I am proud to call him my friend. Enjoy! I am talking with Quinton Britt a pastor and trauma and hospice chaplain. We discuss his very important work, what he has seen in his lifetime and what has not changed, our identity in Christ, how each person has value and where our hope lies. ____________________________________ HEALTHY HARMONY: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inspirehealthyharmony/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/inspirehealthyharmony Http://www.inspirehealthyharmony.com Today's Guest: Pastor Quinton Britt Quinton Britt was born in inner city Washington DC in the 1960’s, an extremely volatile time in our country. He grew up with struggle and unrest after his parents divorced when he was only 1 year of age. Throughout school, he showed tremendous skill and talent as an athlete and ended up as a High School All American earning scholarships to local universities. Instead of choosing football as a professional career, he selected the armed forces and joined the Marine Corps. Quinton states that this is where God shaped his standards of conduct, moral integrity, fortitude, perseverance, and leaderships skills. Those standards, skills and most importantly his belief in God would come to serve him greatly as he has been met with numerous tragedies in life. In 1982, he accepted his call to ministry and went on to minister with prison and street ministry. Since that time, He has served in many capacities in the church including pastor, teacher, deacon, pastoral care, children’s ministry, just to name a few. He currently serves as night chaplain at Banner University Center in Phoenix covering many of the tragedies and traumas that so often occur as well as serving as a Hospice Chaplain. He lives with his wife Lori and daughter Jada outside Phoenix, AZ. __________________________________ Host: Jennifer Pickett One of the country’s leading dietitians, Jennifer Pickett has just announced that she will be launching a brand new podcast focusing on healthy living, holistic self-care, and encouragement. Jennifer has a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Southern Mississippi and will be giving away free tips to her listeners that she has given to countless clients as a health and wellness expert for the past twenty-three years. Jennifer’s journey began after getting frustrated with her own health journey so she decided to dig deep and see what she was missing. What she discovered was a very lopsided approach to healthy living. It’s very common for people to simply rely on a diet, an exercise routine, or a supplement. This one-sided approach simply leads to frustration and doesn’t fully address the whole body and holistic health. Jennifer quickly identified barriers that were holding her back from living life to the fullest. By addressing those obstacles, she started to see the beauty of harmony between body, mind, and soul. During her personal health journey, Jennifer became increasingly frustrated with the lack of simple, realistic, and holistic wellness information. After identifying this gap and huge need, Jennifer decided to launch her own company so she could coach and encourage others. That company is called Healthy Harmony. By using encouraging words with simple and realistic education, Jennifer empowers others to conquer obstacles and move forward on their health journey to live life to the fullest and that is exactly what she will be doing in her new podcast, Healthy Harmony. The podcast will be weekly and will feature several different segments with Jennifer giving healthy lifestyle tips, cooking recipes, and exclusive interviews with other leading health and lifestyle influencers. Jennifer will simultaneously be releasing interactive cooking videos on her personal YouTube channel starting mid-January. She will be teaching viewers how to make simple, healthy meals that anyone can cook at home. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/inspirehealthyharmony/message

Prior to his last season with the team, Walt Hazzard – a player on John Wooden’s first NCAA Championship team – took the helm as UCLA coach. We discuss his lasting impact on Nigel and the team.. Miguel ended his Bruins career in style, scoring an equal game-high, 18 points, as UCLA won the 1985 NIT Championship, at the famed Madison Square Garden. CBA / NBA career | Years: 1985-86 – 1986-87 We talk about the lead-up to the 1985 NBA Draft, including team interviews that Nigel undertook, and, his one-on-one workout with the legendary Jerry West, on the court at the Great Western Forum. After being the last player cut from the New Jersey Nets’ training camp, Nigel signed with Wisconsin’s new CBA franchise, the La Crosse Catbirds. He talks about his fondness for that season, where he was named to the league’s All-Rookie team, averaging more than 17 points per game. Miguel was runner-up to future NBA All-Star, Michael Adams, for Rookie of the Year. The Catbirds made it to the 1986 CBA Championship series, before losing out to (former podcast guest) Ed Nealy and his Tampa Bay Thrillers. Continued interest from the New Jersey Nets (and L.A. Lakers), led to Nigel’s return to (Nets) training camp, in anticipation of a roster spot for the 1986-87 NBA season. He talks about the seemingly-innocuous ‘tweak’ of his ankle, during a lead-up game. That quickly led to an inner-monologue: “My foot is on the ground…but I don’t feel anything”. He’d fractured his heel bone and damaged his Achilles tendon. NBA veteran, Buck Williams, helped Nigel put his injury into context – offering suggestions on how to overcome the disappointment of having his professional career, seemingly reach an abrupt end. Entertainment: Commercials, television, movies and more After commencing rehabilitation for the 1987-88 NBA season, Nigel lost the desire to compete at the highest level, making a conscious decision to pursue other opportunities. His love for the entertainment industry, went as far back as high school – he attended classes with peers who had connections (family and otherwise) with the entertainment industry. Miguel’s attorney helped connect Nigel with an agent and key members of the entertainment industry. Not long after, Dennis Hopper - recognizing the former-Bruins player - struck up a conversation with Miguel. Within an hour, Nigel was offered his first movie role, in Colors (1988). Future roles included the TV series, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper (1992) and movies, White Men Can’t Jump (1992), Blue Chips (1994) and the iconic Space Jam (1996), where Miguel appears on-screen and off; he was Basketball Technical Advisor. We chat about his crucial involvement in the behind-the-scenes running of the legendary Jordan Dome, where Michael Jordan took part in amazing pick-up games – including Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, Dennis Rodman & Jack Haley – during production of the film. Nigel also details what it was like to be Michael Jordan’s ‘body double’ for seven years. We chat about Nigel being named Belize’s ‘Goodwill Ambassador‘ (1994) and ‘Film Ambassador’ (2008), along with what the prestigious positions mean to him. Nigel also talks about creating II Jam Casting & Production. I ask Nigel to recall “The Game I’ll Never Forget” and round out the conversation with a chat about the significance of his jersey number. Nigel Miguel: IMDb | Media: Ardomi | Twitter: @FilmBelize We discuss Mitchell's career in basketball since he retired as a player. He's been involved in various roles, most recently, accepting a position as a sports agent at Jackson Management Group (owned by Phil Jackson's son, Charles). Our conversation rounds out with a quick chat about the significance of Mitchell's jersey numbers. People mentioned in this episode, include: Cedric Ceballos, Pearl Washington & Gail Goodrich. High School All-American and eight-year NBA veteran, Mitchell Butler. High School: Oakwood, California Mitchell reflects on his outstanding high school career. From 1987 to 1989, he was named the Southern Section Small Schools Division, Player of the Year. In 1988, he led Oakwood to the (Liberty League) Division Championship, notching an astonishing 47 points, 19 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks, in his team's 61-60 victory. We talk about his 1988 quarterfinal game, where he tallied a staggering 50, of his team’s 55 points, in an eight-point win (55-47). In November of 1988 – in the early-signing period ahead of his senior year at high school - Mitchell signed a letter of intent with the UCLA Bruins. He discusses how heavily he was recruited and what led him to ultimately choose the Bruins. Mitchell also talks about his 1989 (Third Team) All-American selection. College: University of California Los Angeles | Years: 1989-90 - 1992-93 At the time of recording our conversation, Mitchell ranked sixth all-time, in total games played (130) for the UCLA Bruins. Whilst researching for our chat, I discovered that in the last warm-up game (November, 1989) prior to his freshman season, Butler's Bruins played against my fellow countrymen, the Australian Boomers. UCLA defeated the Aussies, 80-68, at Pauley Pavilion. Mitchell played in the NCAA Tournament, in each of his four seasons. We chat about his freshman campaign, where he made it to the Sweet Sixteen, against Duke - the eventual National Finalists (who lost to UNLV). As a sophomore, Butler started almost every game, before the Bruins were upset by Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. We discuss how close Mitchell came to transferring from UCLA after that second season. UCLA made it to the Elite Eight, in 1992, before losing out to Calbert Cheaney and his Indiana Hoosiers. Though it was a disappointing end to the season, Mitchell won his team's Player Improvement Award, due to his all-around play and positive mental attitude. As a senior, he was named team captain and also enjoyed (arguably) his best season as a Bruin, with 9.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. We cover UCLA's near-upset of Michigan's Fab Five, in a classic, second-round overtime game, in the 1993 NCAA Tournament. NBA / Euro / ABA / CBA career | Years: 1993-94 - 2003-04 We talk about the circumstances behind Mitchell being overlooked on (1993) draft day, and how he made his way into the league, in the months that followed. Individually, Mitchell's best NBA seasons were his first two years in the league, averaging almost eight points and three rebounds, in just 19 minutes per game. We cover his first stint with Washington and also, his links to Australian legend - and former podcast guest - Andrew Gaze. Butler twice scored an NBA-career high of 26 points. Mitchell describes the feeling of being 'on fire'. Thanks to a tip-off from great friend of the podcast, Jim McIlvaine, I ask Mitchell about his acting career. We briefly discuss his roles in Blue Chips (1994) & Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault (1996). Mitchell talks about his involvement with Space Jam (1996), however, his scenes were ultimately cut from the movie. Prior to the 1997 season, Washington traded Mitchell (along with Rasheed Wallace) to Portland, in return for Harvey Grant and Rod Strickland. We talk about Mitchell's thoughts on the deal. Butler made it to the playoffs for the first time in his NBA career - playing limited minutes in a four-game series loss to the L.A. Lakers. He talks about how it felt to be part of a playoff team. Mitchell signed as a free agent with Cleveland. Barely a month into the season, he suffered significant neck and shoulder problems, leading to surgery. He talks about the impact the injury had on his career, and how he dealt with news that he'd miss the rest of the season. Following the lockout-shortened 1999 season, Butler wouldn’t return to the NBA until the 2001-02 campaign. During that gap in his NBA résumé, he headed overseas and played in Lithuania, before returning home and playing in the American Basketball Association (not related to the original ABA, I should add). Mitchell returned to the Trail Blazers franchise, signing as a free agent. He discusses what it was like to be back in the NBA and how his second time with the team, differed so much to his 1997 season. Prior to his final season in the NBA, Mitchell was a key member of the Continental Basketball Association's (CBA) Yakima Sun Kings. His team won the 2003 Championship. He reflects fondly on his time in the league. Butler closed out his NBA-playing career, returning to suit up for the Washington Wizards. We chat about his final season, what opportunities presented themselves and whether he could have played on, beyond 2004. Mitchell featured in a number of Top 10 Plays on NBA Action. I asked him to choose his favorite move and he certainly didn't disappoint. I ask Mitchell to recall “The Game I’ll Never Forget”. In a first for the podcast, he shares three-memorable games - one each from high school, college and the NBA. We discuss Mitchell's career in basketball since he retired as a player. He's been involved in various roles, most recently, accepting a position as a sports agent at Jackson Management Group (owned by Phil Jackson's son, Charles). Our conversation rounds out with a quick chat about the significance of Mitchell's jersey numbers. People mentioned in this episode, include: Michael Adams, Tyus Edney, Darrick Martin, Chris Webber, Vernon Maxwell, Allan Houston, Kenny Anderson, Tracy Murray, James Robinson & Ed O'Bannon.
