In this episode Lauren and Carrie discuss:How to stand out with social mediaWomen and moneyDealing with financial anxietyBenefits of building a Fab Personal Advisory Board (PAB)Practicing boundaries and saying “no” more often to gain powerFailure and challenges – how you can fail fantasticallyThe importance of demonstrating vulnerability to demonstrate confidence and leadership while leveling up Key takeaways:Recognize that social media is a highlight reel, you need to find your own highlight reel that is truly and authentically you. No presence on social media is a presence and comes across that you don't want to be found – if individuals are looking for you, they will then look at someone else.Women must train themselves to push past being risk averse by becoming educated, interacting with women in a safe space, and negotiating around compensation and salary while utilizing a “mental mute” to allow negotiators to come to you. An advisory board comprised of individuals that have experience in areas that you would like to improve upon will help you enhance your life and get your career to the next level. It's important to not just fail and learn from it, but to be willing to share this failure with others to help them feel okay with their own failures. “When women work together, we are so much more powerful.” – Carrie Kerpen “You have to be really really intentional about your desire to live the life that you want.”– Carrie Kerpen “Failure is essential to be able to grow and you do not build resilience without experiencing some form of failure.” – Carrie Kerpen Reach out to Carrie at:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carriekerpen/Get the book, Work It: Secrets for Success from the Boldest Women in Business here:Book: https://amzn.to/3xHuZpZ Listen to the podcast, All the Social Ladies here:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/all-the-social-ladies/id858239631 Reach out to Lauren at:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laurenherring/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LaurenHerringCareerExpert Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenherring IMPACT Group Website: www.impactgrouphr.com Earn Your Worth Website: www.earnyourworthcareers.com IMPACT Group LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/impact-group/ Earn Your Worth LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/earn-your-worth-careers/ Get the book, Take Control of Your Job Search here:Paperback Book: https://amzn.to/3tibaCz ebook: https://amzn.to/3dk4Cy5

When I initially started the Likeable company it was not called Likeable. It was called The K Buzz which eventually became Likeable. The concept behind the company was to leverage word-of-mouth marketing to help organizations generate buzz. I believe likability and social media are great equalizers for small businesses. Generally, the bigger a business is the harder it is for them to be as customer-centric or employee-centric as they should be. This means local small businesses have an opportunity to differentiate themselves by being more likable to their customers and employees. In the long run, your likability and ability to adapt to customers' needs is a strong competitive advantage. The biggest difference between a small business owner and an entrepreneur is the mindset and ability to delegate. No matter what vertical or size company you are, the best leaders do three things well: set the strategy and vision for the company, put the people in the right seats, and make sure there's enough money in the bank to make payroll. If you do those three things well and delegate the rest, you will be able to work on the business vs. in the business -- which unlocks growth. When you can put your strategy down on paper and create a process for others to follow, that is when you will experience tremendous growth in your company. Today I run a company called Apprentice, which was born out of my own experience working with and hiring students at Likeable. Apprentice is a managed marketplace that connects business owners to the best and brightest college talent. If you want to hire a Harvard business graduate today you would have to pay them a $100k starting salary, but what small business owner wants to do that or can afford to do that. However, if you hire them a year before they graduate, that same type of talent can be hired for a fifth of the cost. In the same way, Likeable Media helped to democratize social media for small businesses. The model is built on the principle we all have something to teach and learn. The key advantage of digital tools in your business is they allow you to communicate at scale with your audience. For example, we recently implemented a CRM at Apprentice, and with one click I can schedule personalized emails to be sent out to all our clients. We talked about delegating to people but we can also delegate to tools that automate the process defined in our strategy. Combined with the friendly face and local touch you bring to customers, you have further differentiated yourself from the big businesses that are competing for your customer's attention. He was drawn in by the allure of feeling like a venture capitalist, and it seemed exciting to be investing in fantastic deals and alongside terrific people. This excitement blinded Dave from vetting the opportunity nor understanding it first before putting $30,000 into it. This was quite a substantial amount for him at the time. Lack of communicationWhat took Dave aback concerning this investment was a real communication gap between the folks running the firm and their investors. The investors never received any communication regarding their investment or how the company was performing. Dave felt uncomfortable about the poor communication after a while. He even reached out to one of the other investors, who confirmed that he was also going through the same lack of communication experience. Where there is smoke, there is indeed fireThe lack of communication continued, and the fund was eventually shut down. Dave never saw a dime, but worse, he never got to know what happened to his money, which, sadly, he lost. Lessons learnedForget the glitz and glamour; understand your investment firstDo not get caught up in the glitz and glamour of investing. Instead, do your homework to understand what you are getting yourself into. Do thorough research until you feel more comfortable about the investment. Understand risk and rewardBefore you invest in anything, make sure you understand what the risk is compared to the reward. To protect yourself from risk, invest different amounts of money based on your ability to stomach the loss. Do not invest everything you have into one speculative investment venture. Instead, diversify your investments. Understand what your communication needs as an investor areKnow what your communication needs are. Go in knowing if these needs are going to be met or not. First, you should have access to the publicly available data regarding any investment you are interested in. You should also be able to get regular communication regarding the performance of your investment. Suzanne is joined this week by social media expert Dave Kerpen and three authors: Kimber A. Leigh, “Greta Gar Bitch;” M. Kuriel, “Sensing Strange and Twisted Travels;” and C.L. Barber, “Keeper of the Keystone” and “Key to Dragon Falls.” Dave Kerpen heads up Likeable, a social medium a software company that serves thousands of small business, and he's the Chairman of Likeable Media a social media and content marketing agency for big brands. He's written several amazing books but today we are focusing on his book, “Likeable Social Media.” “Greta Gar Bitch” is Kimber Leigh's true story of surviving severe child abuse in the most unthinkable ways. She lost her mother and 2 brothers at their own hands, but she's turned that abuse and awfulness into a beautiful life. M. Kuriel's book, “Sensing Strange and Twisted Travels,” is a collection of short stories following Don Orville, whose whole life implodes after he helps a blood mage. Out of the ruin, he launches a career as a travelling storyteller by visiting many unusual places in search of new audiences and the stories they share with him. In C.L. Barber's book, “Keeper of the Keystone,” the night a dad goes missing on his son's first birthday, a triple murder stuns the neighborhood. The tragic events of that night remain clouded in mystery. Fourteen years later, the arrival of an old family member, leads to a 15-year-old Michael and his friends finding themselves in court full of intrigue and a desperate struggle for survival.

In this episode, Carrie normalizes and makes sense of the “mom juggle.” She elaborates and emphasizes on how we must subscribe to the philosophy that we CAN have It all, but you cannot have it all AND do It at the same time. We must have self acceptance, be focused, deliberate, and again, accept and face the fact that we really are juggling things. Once you have self acceptance, you will be a happier person. And of course, we are human, so it is okay to let somethings fall. Listen to hear more on that “Do It” attitude that Carrie has, the one that we all crave. She teaches us how to pick ourselves up at the times that truly seem to be the lowest. More about Carrie:Carrie is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur. In her own words, "I'm what you might call an “accidental” entrepreneur. Despite having a rather loud inner self-critic, I built a multimillion-dollar social media agency at a time when there was no one to teach you about social media marketing. Together, my husband and I did it without any formal education on how to start or run a business. In fact, before I started our company, I didn’t have a single day of agency experience." Dave and Carrie now own multiple businesses and she currently serves as the CEO of Likeable Media. Her new book, WORK IT: Secrets For Success From The Boldest Women In Business, tells the truth about the “secret” to success for women today. (Hint: there’s no ONE secret for anyone!) Content is this amazing way to demonstrate who you are, your reputation, your credibility, your knowledge and your expertise to so many more people at once. - Dave Kerpen Takeaways + Tactics Sales can only scale so much because you typically talk to one person at a time. With content, you can prospect to hundreds or thousands of people at once. Your content should do one or more of these things: educate, entertain, and inspire. Your title needs to be emotion-invoking and action-driving. Take off your marketing cap, and put on your consumer cap. Ask yourself what would make you take action as a consumer. Then create that content. At the start of the show, Dave shared why content marketing is the ultimate strategy for touching more than one person with one piece. Next, we talked about the effect content can have on a real estate business, and how you can get the attention of property owners. Dave also gave content ideas for real estate agents who want to establish themselves as local authorities. We also shared on: How much time you should commit to content marketing The importance of a very strong headline that delivers on its promise The power of LinkedIn Media used to be magazines, TV networks and newspapers. Now YOU can be the media and put out content that positions you as an expert and authority. Content marketing gives us so many opportunities to stand out, but very few take advantage of this. Use your content to make it easier for you to be likeable and remarkable. It will represent who you are and build a brand that will carry you into other businesses, careers and opportunities. The ultimate ideal is to be the definitive resource for your target market. If you do it right and you don’t give up early, it will become a lead machine for you. Carrie Kerpen, CEO and co-founder of Likeable Media, an award-winning digital content studio, joins Host Deirdre Breakenridge on Women Worldwide. Carrie is a regular podcaster, and just recently launched the 100th episode of her show, All The Social Ladies. She's a keynote speaker who discusses social media and women in business and is a regular contributor to Forbes and Inc. magazine. As an early adopter of social media and technology, Carrie discusses the impact social media has on women and how it can be a confidence detractor. On the show, she mentions the Highlight Reel and how you can get caught up in the “best" of what people are sharing via their social channels. Viewing their success and then making comparisons to your own life and career is a confidence detractor rather than a confidence builder. Carrie points out that the Highlight Reel doesn’t present everything behind a person’s business or life; it doesn't show challenges or weaknesses. Keeping this in mind helps you to realize that the key to social media is your vulnerability and authenticity and how it's okay to ask for help. Carrie also offers her best advice on building your brand and your story; not just what you’re trying to say, but why you’re trying to communicate your narrative. A little more about Carrie Kerpen … Carrie refers to herself as a (Non)trepreneur. The launch of her business was atypical. She married her husband and co-founder at a baseball stadium in the world's largest sponsored wedding. The wedding was a word of mouth sensation that was featured in major media outlets including the New York Times, ABC World News Tonight, and the CBS Early Show. Her company, Likeable Media was born as a result. You can connect with Carrie on LinkedIn and on Twitter @carriekerpen

He can be found on Twitter, Instagram and other social media websites: @davekerpen. Show TopicsDave's motivation for writing The Art of People How the book is structured Online vs offline identities and professional vs personal online personas Value of self-awareness and The Enneagram Assessment in developing people skills Are people skills innate or can they be learned?
If you could pick any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? I would choose the ability to read people's minds and I would use it know what people were thinking at all times. Why are you an entrepreneur? Was there an impact moment that led you to this path? It was our sponsored wedding that got us thinking we could build businesses, but I've always had some entrepreneurial thinking. What I teach my kids now is to think about solving problems creatively and if you can figure out how to do that, you can probably solve other people's problems and build a business doing that. What do you want readers to take away from reading The Art of People? “Everything you get out of life is a result of your interactions with other people.” What The Art of People is all about is how can you live your life in a way that is going to make people want to do things for you, and position yourself to be the person people think about when they want to help someone. The number one thread is the power of listening, and listening better than you do today. Most people aren't listening, they're waiting to talk. If you're waiting to talk, you can't possibly be listening for meaning and understanding, and that's where you can get to the heart of connecting with other people. If you want to become a better listener, it comes with intention and practice. What's the most important question they should ask in order to stand out, and what should they do to stay top of mind with their colleagues and customers? Ask them “How can I help you?” with sincerity Share content that people like on social media What are some quick tips people can execute immediately to change their social media strategy to stay in front of people? Find out what your keywords are for when people talk about you or the problem you solve. How is tapping through someone's stories on Snapchat going to be a gamechanger? It represents how people communicate with each other. It's more like the real world where if you say something, it doesn't last forever. Real life is just random moments. What is the most underrated key in networking? Build your own personal brand. Make your own distinction on your outfit. What can you do that makes yourself stand out a little bit and helps brand you over time? How will you measure your life? I will measure it by the impact that I have on others and my family through my business, books, speaking and everything else to come.
