In a deeply impactful week, the latest episode of New Politics discusses the broad range of events that have not only shaken local communities but also stirred international relations. We begin with the tragic attack at Westfield shopping mall in Bondi Junction, Sydney, where six lives were abruptly ended. This horrific incident prompts a wider discussion on public safety and the effectiveness of weapon control legislation in New South Wales. We also analyse the high-profile defamation case involving Bruce Lehrmann – he was found to be comprehensive liar, lost the case and was ultimately found to have sexually assaulted Brittany Higgins. The court's findings and the implications of Lehrmann's actions illuminate issues of media integrity and the complexities of public perception in high-stakes legal battles. On the international stage, we look at the escalating conflict between Israel and Gaza, examining the motives behind Israel's controversial military actions and the broader geopolitical chessboard involving Iran, Hezbollah, and the international community's stance on Palestinian statehood. We explore the volatile dynamics of Middle Eastern politics and what it means for the global balance of power. We also cover the recent byelection in the seat of Cook, analysing the political strategies at play and the implications for future elections and for the Liberal Party. We also question the Australian government's fiscal priorities, juxtaposing a massive increase in defence spending of $50 billion against the backdrop of rising homelessness and mental health issues. There's never enough money for the things that really matter.Join us for a comprehensive exploration of these critical issues, where we connect dots across continents and communities, offering insights into the effects of policy decisions, social justice, and international diplomacy. Ein Rockabily-Song der zu einer der Hymnen des Punks wird? Das ist der Weg, den "I Fought The Law" gegangen ist. Warum der Song bis heute noch so bedeutsam ist, hört Ihr in dieser Folge.
"I'm breakin' rocks in the hot sun / I fought the law and the law won..."- "I Fought The Law" Over the weekend, I watched Oliver Stone's JFK. I'll probably always have nightmares about the physical appearances of Joe Pesci and Tommy Lee Jones, but it certainly drives home an important point: you're not gonna beat the system. You can LARP and play games if you want to, but when it all boils down, you're not gonna beat the system. The Inimitable Rod Crosby The Intruders was a rock band formed in El Paso, Texas on 1960. The original members were Rod Crosby, Les Lockhart, Donnie Webb and Bobby Wilson. Bobby Wilson, younger brother of Bill Wilson, drummer for the Rock Kings, started the group. The Intruders first gig was a Texas Western Kappa Sigma dance at the Downtown Hilton Hotel. Their pay was $40 ($10 per person). From that time in 1960 until 1973, Rod Crosby emerged as the band's leader. The original members dropped out along the way. It became known as Rod Crosby & The Intruders, and Rod played full time until 1973, when Rod sought employment in the corporate world. In that 13 year period , the Intruders performed consistently, booked every weekend, and played hundreds of jobs at almost every high school in El Paso, all the NCO Officers Clubs on Fort Bliss, Biggs Air Field, McGregor Range and White Sands Missile Range, countless weddings, college parties, private parties and graduation parties. The group was fortunate to have evolved during a time when the Rock & Roll industry was thriving, growing leaps and bounds. The groups appeal was based off their ability to cover tunes precisely for dancing, always lending themselves to the desires of the audience, as opposed to the band. Having performed for thousands of people for the past 60 plus years - Rod Crosby & The Intruders is one of a very few that can make that claim. In 2009, an entity called the Border Legends of El Paso was created to honor any and all local musicians with a body of performing work over a long period of time. The Border Legends of El Paso entity staged a non-profit concert, annually, to pay tribute to El Paso's musicians, past & present, net proceeds going to charitable causes. The annual concert was produced by Rick Kern and Rod Crosby (co-producers). Rick and Rod both had connections to the Bobby Fuller Four. In 1965 Rod was asked by Bobby Fuller to consider joining his group. Rod painfully declined due to his many obligations. The Bobby Fuller Four went to Hollywood to make their mark which they did with I Fought The Law, and more. However, Bobby was killed due to foul play, shrouded in mysterious circumstances, an unsolved murder to this day that remains on the E channels 10 Most Unsolved Murder Mysteries. Two members of the Bobby Fuller Four joined Rod's band not long after the tragedy. Rod picked up the bands musical torch and performs many of the Bobby Fuller Four songs to this day, as well as many of Buddy Holly songs, Buddy being Bobby's and Rod's greatest influence, unknown to either until it was discovered later as friends. Current members of Rod's Intruder band are drummer, Rick Benites, bassist, Ed Clore, guitarist, Paul Dillon, guitarist/keyboardist, Rick Armstrong and guitarist Rod Crosby. All members are vocalists, as well. They are still in great demand with many of El Paso's annual high school reunions. Long live Rod Crosby & The Intruders and Never to Be Forgotten! #rodcrosby #rodcrosby&theintruders

On this extra-special episode of Banned Biographies I was very lucky to chat over Zoom with Rick McMurray, the drummer from Ash. Ash's first full-length album, 1977, was release 25 years ago and went straight to number one on the UK album chart. To commemorate that, Ash is playing the album in its entirety on the 5th June 2021 which you can sign up to watch through the band's website https://ash-official.com/. There are various bundles available, from the concert only right up to getting unlimited 30-day access to the show, a behind the scenes documentary, a bonus performance, a limited 1977 frisbee and a limited edition 1977 t-shirt. All tiers are well worth the money. During our chat, Rick was candid about the highs and lows of Ash's career as well as talking about the band's unfinished indie horror film, Slashed, having a meal with Joe Strummer and why they didn't join him on stage to play I Fought The Law, getting Mickey Bradley and Damien O'Neil from The Undertones on the last Ash album and so much more. I'm so honoured and thankful to Rick for giving up part of his morning to talk to me and I hope you get some great insights into the man himself, the life of a professional musician and how that job has changed over the last three decades. He's a totally down to earth guy and I really hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did talking to him. The Standells were a Los Angeles garage band formed in the early 60's, often referred to as an early punk band. The lineup was Larry Tamblyn on organ and vocals, Tony Valentino on guitar, Gary Lane on bass, and former Mouseketeer Dick Dodd on drums and lead vocals. The name came from Tamblyn and Valentino, and referenced their standing around booking agents, trying to get a job.The group made use of their Los Angeles roots by appearing in several low budget films in the 1960's including “Get Yourself a College Girl” in 1964 and the cult classic “Riot on Sunset Strip” in 1967. They also appeared on the television series “The Munsters” as themselves in the episode “Far Out Munster.” They also appeared on The Bing Crosby Show under a pseudonym “The Love Bugs.” The Live Ones EP was recorded in March 1966, and showcases both the sound and the attitude of The Standells. The songs are short like most songs of the era, and make extensive use of the organ in the music. The Standells big hit was “Dirty Water,” a reference to Boston Harbor and Charles River which was notorious for its pollution at the time. Their first major gig was at The Oasis in Honolulu, which may explain the surfer influence. In 1966, The Standells toured with The Rolling Stones. The Standells continue to perform today, though the lineup has changed over time.Mr. NobodyThis song is about a guy hitting on the author's girlfriend. He isn't having any of it. “So you can take your fancy car and drive away real far. The world is full of nobodies like you are.”Why Pick On Me?If you've ever been attracted to a flirtatious girl who is there one moment and gone the next, you can identify with this tune. The lyrics that bring it home are, “candy kisses don't mean a thing if only flies those kisses bring.”Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear WhiteThis track references the contrast between blue collar workers and white collar workers. When white collar workers thumb their nose at blue collar workers, sometimes the good guy isn't the one wearing white! “Everyday I work Hard. At night I spend restless time. Those rich kids and all their lazy money, they can't hold a candle to mine.”GloriaThe Standells covered this garage band standard by Van Morrison and his band Them. Many bands covered this song, perhaps the most popular of these covers was done by The Doors. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Born Free” by Matt Monro (Main Theme to the motion picture “Born Free”)This movie was released in March 1966, and told the tale of a couple who raised a lion cub and released it back into the wild. STAFF PICKS:Batman by Jan and DeanRob starts our staff picks with a cover from the campy cult classic superhero show of the 60's. A number of groups covered the song from the television show. Jan and Dean were football players who met while singing in the shower after practice and decided to form a band. They had a number of surfer inspired hits at the time.I Fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller FourBruce's staff pick is a song covered by The Clash in 1978. The Bobby Fuller Four had success covering this song in 1966, but the original goes back to 1959 when Sonny Curtis recorded it with the Crickets after he took the place of the late Buddy Holly. Just six months after the song hit the charts, Bobby Fuller was found dead from asphyxiation in his mother's car. The death was ruled a suicide, but many believe he was murdered. The Ballad of the Green Berets by Staff Sargent Barry SadlerBrian's staff pick is a positive, popular patriotic song. This would prove an unusual popular song as the protest song became more entrenched in rock music. This was the number 1 song of 1966. Barry Sadler released an album by the end of the year, though none of his other songs would prove as popular. I Spy (for the FBI) by Jamo ThomasWayne's closes out our staff picks this week with a Chicago group taking a Motown feel. It peaked at number 98 in the US, though it did slightly better in the UK. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Hi Heel Sneaker by the Ramsey Lewis TrioWe close out this episode with a jazzy number from Chicago-based Ramsey Lewis.

What would The Beatles' 1 album sound like if The Beatles never existed? What? That makes no sense. I did this show as a tribute to how every song they wrote (almost) was enduring and solid enough to be covered by their contemporaries as well as artists of the future. The Kids From The Brady Bunch - Love Me Do (1972) This was the album on which "It's A Sunshine Day", "Keep On", and "Drummer Man" appeared. I guess you could call this album their Rubber Soul. The Crickets - From Me To You (1964) At this point, The Crickets consisted of Sonny Curtis, Jerry Allison, Glen Hardin, and Jerry Naylor. Arranged by Leon Russell. Curtis would later write and sing the theme song for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, "Love Is All Around". He wrote two other songs POACA know. "I Fought The Law", originally recorded by Bobby Vee (who replaced The Crickets on the bill the night Buddy Holly died), and "More Than I Can Say" which was a huge hit years later for Leo Sayer. Brenda Lee - She Loves You (1965) The Beatles had acted as a support act for Brenda Lee when she headlined a gig at the Star Club in Hamburg, West Germany, in 1962. For any other artist of the time, that must have seemed like the toppermost of the poppermost. The year before this, she recorded "Is It True" featuring Jimmy Page on guitar. Sparks - I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1975) Produced by Tony Visconti, who also produced Bowie's Berlin trilogy. I cannot listen to Sparks for very long. I think the people who love them have some sort of soul deficiency. But for completion's sake, here. David Clayton-Thomas - Can't Buy Me Love (1975) I think this was his last solo album before rejoining Blood, Sweat and Tears. Whew. Hard to believe this was never issued on CD. After he rejoined, or maybe BECAUSE he rejoined, but more likely due to those old contractual obligations, their next two albums with him would be credited to Blood Sweat and Tears - Featuring David Clayton-Thomas. Did it make one damned bit of difference? It did not. John Mayall - A Hard Day's Night (1976) The Beatles were deceptively excellent singers. This comes into evidence when others try to ape their recordings. Produced by Allen Toussaint, who wrote the entire record except for this one track. This album charted nowhere. The Runaways - Eight Days a Week (1978) The Runaways were pretty limited instrumentalists. This is another deceptively difficult song to carry off. I don't think it's very good. Alma Cogen - I Feel Fine (1967) "I'm so glad...he's got me in a whirl..." This recording was released posthumously a year after her death from leukemia. It is speculated that she had an affair with John Lennon, who shagged everything not tied down or named Cynthia at that point. Because he could. Bee Gees - Ticket To Ride (1965) Released in 1970 without the consent of the group... but only in Germany, France, and Japan. The brothers didn't even know about it until they found it in a Swiss record store after the fact. They should have waited 7 more years. They would have made a mint. Dolly Parton - Help! (1979) The bassist, Abe Laboriel, saw his son become Paul McCartney's drummer. Marvin Gaye - Yesterday (1969) His next album was What's Going On. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Day Tripper (1979) Progress Organization - We Can Work It Out (1971) A Czech rock group. A little like Vanilla Fudge. They released exactly one album. This was on it. Aren't you happy I am here to do this stuff? Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Paperback Writer (1973) "If you really like it, you can help me write..." I imagine after this Kenny Rogers asked for his deposit on the practice room returned. This album was a soundtrack of their TV show of the time. I cannot tell if Thelma Camacho is on this record. I played a set of her solo stuff on one of my shows. It's awful. Revelation - Yellow Submarine (1980) Sounds like Chic. Almost a carbon copy. The Singers Unlimited - Eleanor Rigby (1977) A pretty cool reinvention of this excellent song. From Wikipedia: Gene Puerling took advantage of cutting-edge, multi-tracking techniques of German studio engineer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer to create his harmonic concepts and the group's signature sound. In the overdubbing process, baritone Puerling and tenor Shelton would often add two additional middle parts, after which all parts were "doubled" and "tripled." Creating these extra tracks created the fuller, richer sound of the group's recordings. The group would record their songs by having Bonnie Herman record a simplified version of the melody, after which, Len, Gene, and Don would fill in the remaining parts. Once this process had been completed, Bonnie Herman's original melodic line would be replaced with a new one, in which she could add melodic embellishments and add "color" to the group's sound. Bass singer Len Dresslar was known as the voice of the Jolly Green Giant ("Ho, Ho, Ho!") for over 40 years, as well as the voice behind other jingles. Bonnie Herman was the singer of the original "Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm Is There" commercial jingle, which ran for several years. She is the daughter of Lawrence Welk's original Champagne Lady Lois Best and Jules Herman, who was a trumpeter in the Welk orchestra. She is the niece of big band leader Woody Herman. Amen Corner - Penny Lane (1969) Amen Corner was a Welsh R&B-tinged pop band of the late '60s featuring singer Andy Fairweather-Low, organist Blue Weaver, guitarist Neil Jones, bassist Clive Taylor, saxophonists Allen Jones and Mike Smith, and drummer Dennis Bryon. You remember Dennis and Blue as two rock-steady members of that wonderful Bee Gees incarnation of the mid-to-late '70s. The Anita Kerr Singers - All You Need is Love (1967) Another song that seems very simple, but without the dotted eight notes, it sounds like your rich Aunt is reading you a book. I like the touches of electric guitar. François Glorieux - Hello, Goodbye (1977) This song translates unexpectedly well to slow classical piano...That caveman in the lower-left corner was a hidden member of The Beatles named Oook. v Buck Owens - Lady Madonna (1976) Brothers Johnson - Hey Jude (1976) You should know, if you do not, about an album released in 1976 called "All This and World War II". The soundtrack made money but the movie tanked. Get Back - Clarence Reid (1969) Reid had the talent and chops to be as big as Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett, but he became more popular doing dirty parodies of soul hits (“S–ting off the Dock of the Bay,” “What a Difference a Lay Makes?”) with his XXX-rated alter-ego Blowfly. The Percy Faith Strings - The Ballad of John and Yoko (1970) Squaresville! Isaac Hayes - Something (1970) All 11 minutes of it. Willie Bobo and The Bo Gents - Come Together (1971) Aretha Franklin - Let It Be (1970) Maybe the best of all of these. Aretha made some shitty choices, but she was an angel in front of a mic. Peter Frampton - The Long and Winding Road (1978) This happened. We all traipsed down to the theater in anticipation of some connection, some meaningful validation of what looked like a miracle about to happen. I cannot lie. Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
South Australian Music Hall of Famer 'Mark Meyer' joins me this week to chat about his amazing career. Mark is one of Australia's most recorded and toured drummers, who started his career gigging in Adelaide whilst in high school, eventually making the move to Melbourne where he joined 'Stylus' (who were the only Australian act to be released by Motown Records in the USA.) Mark's career really took off after 'Stylus' disbanded in 1979 when he was invited to join the Queen of Pop 'Marcia Hines' Band, the first gig with Marcia being the '2SM Concert of the Decade' which was the biggest outdoor music spectacle, boasting a Who's Who of Australian musical talent, held on the steps of the Sydney Opera House on November 4th, 1979. Mark has recorded in the vicinity of 400 albums both as a session drummer and as a band member of: Stylus, Marcia Hines, Richard Clapton, Moving Pictures, Jenny Morris, Divinyls, Mark Gillespie, Wendy Mathews, Dave Dobbyn, Keith Urban and Trisha Yearwood just to name a few. He chats about recording at 'Sound City', Van Nuys and 'The Record Plant' LA for the original Footloose Movie Soundtrack, and about how the band did not receive any royalties whatsoever for the track "Never" due to the bankruptcy of their U.S. record company. Music: Intro 'Jenny Morris' "You I Know" written by 'Neil Finn". During the interview: 'Marcia Hines' "You", 'Dragon' "Celebration" written by 'Kool & the Gang', 'Moving Pictures' "Never" (Footloose soundtrack), 'The Party Boys' "I Fought The Law" written by 'Sonny Curtis', 'Chasin The Train' "Fever" written by 'Eddie Cooley' and 'Otis Blackwell', 'The Fallen Saints' "The Maker", and Outro 'Richard Clapton' "The Best Years of Our Lives." In July 1966, Bobby Fuller — the musician who popularized “I Fought The Law” and was dubbed “The Rock and Roll King of the Southwest” — wanted out of his band, and out of his contract. Then he was found dead in his car, his body bruised, bloodied, and doused in gasoline.
Imagine processing the loss of your mother to only later find out your dad is being charged with murder.Richard Galbraith takes us on a roller coaster ride of emotion, as he shares his compelling story of how he fought for his dad’s innocence after he was falsely charged with homicide. In this episode Richard exposes the corrupt practices that occur in the judicial system from perjury, to losing evidence, to lying about the credentials of expert witnesses. All this and so much more is shared in this interview. Richard is a great example of fighting to the end and giving back for the betterment of mankind, as he shares with us his involvement in innocence work today.

"Freundinnen und Freunde des Rechts, macht doch mal Vorschläge für eine Sendung mit Songs zum Thema Recht und Gerechtigkeit!" Mit diesem Tweet hat Justizreporterin Gigi Deppe einen Aufruf gestartet und nicht mit so viel Feedback gerechnet. Es geht auf eine wilde musikalische Reise von Protestsongs der 70er Jahre über Heavy Metal von Metallica bis hin zu Gangsta-Rap von KC Rebell. Ob man das Recht bekämpfen will ("I Fought The Law"), oder darauf hofft, dass es Gerechtigkeit für alle gibt ("…And Justice For All").

During the second half of our July 2016 storytelling event, “I Fought The Law,” we featured stories from three attorneys who shared an insider’s perspective of our complex legal system. Our last storyteller of the evening, Meghan Shapiro, moved to Louisiana in 2013 to practice death penalty defense law in a place with greater need than most. From 2010 to 2014, more people were sentenced to death per capita in Caddo Parish than in any other parish or county in the United States. Meghan has almost exclusively represented poor individuals charged with capital crimes or sentenced to death, a cause to which she has been heavily devoted since her teens. This story is about her first death row client.

Contemporary American culture, however, holds a much more optimistic view of human moral capabilities than does the Bible, and this has unfortunately crept into churches. How else to explain the fact that a religion based on acknowledging our own faults and shortcomings has become widely associated with extraordinary judgmentalism and self-righteousness?…American Christianity now is in...
