I am delighted to have on the show today Chris Guillebeau, here to talk about his latest, Time Anxiety: The Illusion of Urgency and a Better Way to Live, which is out April 15. You may know Chris from his popular newsletter “A Year of Mental Health” or for his books, including 2010's The Art of Non-Conformity, 2012's The $100 Startup, 2014's The Happiness of Pursuit, 2016's Born for This, 2017's Side Hustle, and 2023's Gonzo Capitalism. In Time Anxiety, Chris examines our relationship with the clock, and in our conversation today defines time anxiety; tells us what a cognitive distortion is, including time blindness; how to cultivate a healthier relationship with time; how many of us have bought into the “magical thinking of time management”; how staying busy might be a way of staying avoidant; how our perception of time changes as we age; how a light schedule can be more psychologically challenging than a full one; and so much more. I learned so much from this book and this conversation. Take a listen!Time Anxiety: The Illusion of Urgency and a Better Way to Live by Chris Guillebeau

“It's very easy to say Gen Z's and millennials are demanding, they're needy, but if you really look at the core of what they want, they're basic human needs that we all want.”There's a generational divide in the work place that Madeline Miller wants to change. Madeline is a career coach who focuses specifically on Gen Z and millennial clients, who she says are entering the workforce with an entirely novel set of challenges.Madeline's clients are in their twenties, and grew up in the age of climate change, sweeping tech innovations, and being educated online during a global pandemic. That all amounts to a brand new kind of instability, so it's no wonder they need a unique type of guidance at work.In this episode, Madeline takes us through those shaky work stories - including her own, in her former life as a very successful but very unsatisfied entertainment lawyer (continuing with our over-representation of guests who were once dissatisfied lawyers…there's something to explore there!). She shares how she helps her clients find their footing, and explains why it's high time that employers respond to the needs of new generations of workers. Madeline Miller's BioI'm Madeline, founder of Coaching with Madeline. I strive to make executive coaching accessible for everyone—strengthening connections, cultivating empathy, and transforming leadership to create healthier, happier workplaces.Through my unique A.I.R. coaching formula, I've empowered hundreds of individuals worldwide to thrive in their careers. My program is grounded in strategies that work, drawing from my personal journey of transformation. I went from feeling stuck and unmotivated, bouncing from job to job, to becoming a Hollywood entertainment executive, then the production attorney for the James Bond franchise. In 2021, I started coaching Senior Executives in media, tech, and entertainment to become happier, more impactful leaders. Then, in 2024, I built my own coaching platform, Coaching with Madeline. It is designed to provide high-impact coaching in a relevant, future-building way—especially to Gen Z and Millennials, who often lack the career guidance and leadership development they deserve. In this episode of the Moonshots Podcast, hosts Mike and Mark explore The Art of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want, and Change the World by Chris Guillebeau. This bold and thought-provoking book inspires readers to reject societal norms, challenge conventional wisdom, and create a life of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment on their terms.Additional Resources:To explore Chris Guillebeau's ideas further, check out the following:Course: Non-Conformity Course by Apollo SkillsBook Summary: The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau – Apollo AdvisorPurchase the Book: Buy on AmazonYouTube Talk: Watch Chris's TalkIntroduction:The episode opens with a powerful declaration: “You don't have to live your life how others expect you to.” Through Chris Guillebeau's metaphor of “bridge jumping” (3m52), Mike and Mark discuss how breaking away from societal expectations is often the first step toward living a life of passion and independence.Main Themes and Expanded Insights:What Can You Give to Receive?Chris emphasizes that success begins with contribution. Rather than focusing on what you want from the world, ask: What can I offer to others? Leading with generosity—whether through your time, skills, or expertise—opens doors to opportunity and builds deeper, more meaningful connections. (3m02)Key Insight: Giving creates a ripple effect that brings value back to you unexpectedly.Takeaway: This week, identify one way to contribute meaningfully to your network or community.Characteristics of Fulfilled Individuals:Mike and Mark explore what makes certain people feel truly fulfilled. Guillebeau notes that these individuals share common traits: they live with clarity of purpose, say “no” to distractions, and pursue goals aligned with their values. (1m26)Key Insight: Fulfillment isn't about achieving balance—it's about prioritizing what matters most and eliminating the noise.Takeaway: What brings me joy and makes me feel alive? Use your answers to design a life focused on those pursuits.Reconsider Your Desire for ‘Balance':In the closing segment, Chris challenges the traditional idea of work-life balance. Instead of balancing everything equally, he urges us to prioritize flow: those moments of deep joy, focus, and energy where work and life feel integrated. (1m42)Key Insight: Balance often creates mediocrity. Design your life around activities that bring you energy and fulfillment, and you'll find greater success and happiness.Takeaway: Look for areas where you can reduce energy-draining activities and replace them with work and hobbies that align with your passions.Actionable Takeaways:Reflect on the societal expectations influencing your choices—then redefine success on your terms.Give before you receive. Start small by offering value to your network or helping someone with no strings attached.Embrace flow over balance. Design your life around your passions and integrate work and personal pursuits seamlessly.Additional Resources:To explore Chris Guillebeau's ideas further, check out the following:Course: Non-Conformity Course by Apollo SkillsBook Summary: The Art of Non-Conformity by Chris Guillebeau – Apollo AdvisorPurchase the Book: Buy on AmazonYouTube Talk: Watch Chris's TalkBecome a Moonshots Member:Unlock exclusive content, insights, and more by becoming a Moonshots Podcast member: https://www.patreon.com/Moonshots. “We can look at fertility, we can look at cognition, memory, the nervous system, sleep, really there's not a single system of the body that yoga and meditation don't have have evidence to support for helping you function.” Ann Swanson has written the book on the science of yoga. Literally. After dealing with chronic pain and anxiety throughout her life, Ann tried yoga and meditation. Reluctant at first, once she started seeing real improvements, she went all in - and today, Ann's published two books that map out the hard evidence on the profound impacts these practices can have on our health and well-being. In her books Meditation for the Real World and Science of Yoga, Ann breaks down how these practices can improve nearly every aspect of our health, and how anyone can build them into their day - without a complete lifestyle overhaul. It's January, the time of year when everyone hits the ground running. We're setting goals, building new habits, and pushing to start the year off strong. But all that momentum can come with a price. Stress, burnout, and routines that just don't stick. If you're feeling the pressure, you're not alone. So, in this episode, Ann explains how yoga and meditation helped her overcome her significant health challenges, and how they can help you too. She has dedicated her career to helping people harness the power of mindfulness, movement and the mind-body connection in tiny, manageable steps. No need for incense, chanting, or intense, lengthy, cross-legged sessions. It's the New Year's episode you need. We've got 30-second yoga moves, one-minute meditations, and the small, sustainable habits that can make all the difference.About Ann SwansonAnn Swanson teaches meditation to busy people with busy minds. She is the author of the bestselling book SCIENCE OF YOGA, which has been translated into over 15 languages. Her new book, Meditation for the Real World, illuminates the fascinating science behind meditation with step-by-step practices to help you find peace in everyday life. However, Ann wasn't a naturally “chill person,” and meditation didn't come easy to her. Overcoming chronic pain and anxiety led her to India to study yoga, to China to explore tai chi, into the cadaver lab to teach anatomy, to night school to become a licensed massage therapist, and, ultimately, to earn a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy. Ann blends cutting-edge research with ancient wisdom, resulting in realistic techniques you won't just learn – you'll love to live by! Welcome to episode #965 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Tom Asacker has been challenging my thinking for years, ever since we first connected in the mid-2000s when his book, A Clear Eye For Branding, offered a fresh perspective on marketing and branding. Over the years, Tom has continued to push boundaries, diving into the intersection of belief, behavior, and what truly drives us. His latest book, Unwinding Want - Using Your Mind To Escape Your Thoughts, is a natural progression of his work, building on the insights he explored in earlier books like The Business Of Belief, Sandbox Wisdom, I Am Keats, and Your Brain On Story. In this conversation, Tom and I delved deep into the paradox of desire - how what we think we want often reflects our conditioning rather than our true selves. We discussed how marketers manipulate emotions, the societal constructs that shape our decisions, and the role of personal agency in breaking free from unconscious patterns. Tom shares profound insights about the human experience, such as how recognizing our conditioning can help us make more authentic choices and how the pursuit of comfort can sometimes rob us of meaningful experiences. He also touched on how AI mimics the human mind's patterns, creating an eerie reflection of our own thought loops. What I've always appreciated about Tom is his ability to merge intellectual rigor with practical wisdom, challenging us to reexamine not just what we want but why we want it. If you've ever found yourself questioning whether the life you're living is truly your own, this episode - and Tom's work - might just give you the tools to find out. This is a great discussion to kick off 2025 (Happy New Year!). Enjoy the conversation! Running time: 1:12:22. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Listen and subscribe over at Apple Podcasts. Ryan Murphy is a nine-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer, but it hasn't all been podium glory. At this summer's Paris Games, Ryan missed qualifying for the men's 100 meter backstroke by one tenth of a second. And that was after he had just won silver in the 200 meter. It's these extraordinary swings between triumph and disappointment that Ryan is so brilliant at managing. Through it all, he's learned to roll with the lows just as easily as he celebrates the highs. There are few endeavours that can match the intense 24-7, 365 day per year commitment and pressure of being an Olympian, and in this episode, we get lessons in stress management and keeping things in perspective that anyone can use. At 33 years old, Tatiana Miller suddenly lost feeling and movement in her legs, and was lying in a hospital bed. “I had four orthopedic surgeons tell me, ‘this is going to be your new normal', and at that moment, I remember thinking, no, absolutely not. You're wrong”. When it comes to her health, accepting the status quo has never been in the cards for Tatiana. As a teen, she saw multiple doctors to find help for her autoimmune disease and chronic pain. For years, she struggled to find answers, studying holistic medicine and practicing yoga, but her body kept degenerating, until one day, a bad fall left her paralyzed. In this episode, Tatiana shares how her refusal to accept her doctor's prognosis and her journey to recovery inspired her to found RX for Life, a health consulting business that helps bridge the gap between Western healthcare and holistic medicine. At RX 4 Life, Tatiana helps her clients connect with what's happening in their bodies, the ways that things like mental health and lifestyle could effect that, and how holistic medicine might help. It's a fascinating discussion where we dive into how we approach healthcare and why it's critical that we rethink it.About Tatiana MillerTatiana Miller started RX 4 Life over a decade ago. Drawing from her experiences with Western healthcare, and her experience in psychology and holistic practices, her services aim to support individuals, especially those with high-stress jobs, those dealing with burnout and anxiety, and those living with chronic illnesses. Her mission is to offer the real prescription for life – not just pills or quick fixes, but proactive steps to foster enduring mental health. With this crucial election right around the corner, everyone at The Breakout agreed it's a great time to re-share this interview with Maximina Juson, the director of the documentary, One Person, One Vote? This is a beautiful film that examines America's Electoral College Voting System, and who it really represents. The movie premiered in September on PBS and it's streaming now on the PBS app. Follow @1person1votedoc on IG, FB & TikTok to stay updated. And of course, check out our interview with the amazing Maximina Juson.Summary: “The electoral college is a real pain point for the electorate. They don't understand it, and they don't know why we have it in the first place…So that's why I made this film.” That's how Maximina Juson explains her motivation for making the extraordinary, and necessary, new documentary, One Person, One Vote? It's a film that takes a closer look at something that lots of Americans rarely question: the electoral college voting system. If you've been listening to The Breakout for a while now, you'll know that we love guests who question long-held systems or beliefs, and Maximina's film does just that. One Person, One Vote? explores the electoral college's not-so-equal representation and its racist origins rooted in protecting the power of slave owners. It's a must-watch for anyone curious about our democracy. This episode originally dropped on Juneteenth, and we're rebroadcasting it right ahead of the 2024 American Elections - both are great moments to examine the realities of the system we use to elect our president. In this episode, Maximina shares the perspective-shifting moments she had while making the documentary, especially her extraordinary experience when she found herself filming at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.About Maximina JusonMaximina Juson is an award-winning filmmaker and founder of HUMovies, a film and video production company in Los Angeles. I hope you find them practical and immediately actionable. Coaching Corner episodes will be interspersed between the usual ones, just to spice things up. My guest is fellow coach, Alina Addison, author of The Audacity Spectrum: Leading with Care, Courage and Non-Conformity. The day has finally come! Friends…our book is officially launched! Join us on today's episode as we celebrate the book, vacillate from excitement to nausea, and look back on the incredible guests on The Breakout who inspired it all.One of our amazing guests once said, “all these rules that have been taught to us? They were not bargained for collectively. We did not actually agree to them”. She was actually talking about monogamy, but for us, that sentiment applies universally to every expectation we live by. It's also a sentiment that serves as the starting point for our book, Whatever the Hell You Want. It's a book about the unspoken expectations, the “I shoulds” that we live by, and the secret dreams we've tried to ignore. But it's also a guide for seeing those stifling boxes for what they are, pushing back on expectations, making changes and embracing the life you (yes, you) really want. We know a thing or two about transformations and we know they're not easy. So we wanted to write a practical guide to help people make the changes they are aching to make. And in this episode we're looking back on some of the truly remarkable guests that have broken out of boxes, blown our minds, and inspired us to write the book everyone needs so they can break out themselves.About The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. “Why am I fighting this? Like, why am I fighting the thing that I want to write? For who? For like a teacher that I haven't seen in five years or ten years? For a critic who I don't know?” - Zoraida CórdovaZoraida Córdova doesn't care about what a book should be. When she writes, she's interested in.. well… what she's interested in. That means Zoraida doesn't prioritize following rules or meeting pre-set expectations. If she wants to write about sappy zombies, she will. If she wants to create a deep, profound novel, she will. Above all, she values creative freedom. She has always made a way for herself and her spirit to shine through her work. Whether it's writing for Star Wars or Disney's Meant to Be collection, short stories for one of her anthologies about creatures like vampires, mermaids and faeries, or her epic novel “The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina," Zoraida keeps it fresh and original. And her readers love it! By following her own passions instead of trying to satisfy what she “should do,” Zoraida delivers something readers crave—authenticity.Zoraida Córdova is an award-winning author celebrated for her genre-blending, magical tales like “Labyrinth Lost,” the first book in her Brooklyn Brujas series, which earned her an International Latino Book Award. Her versatility spans adult literary fiction, romance, young adult fiction, editing anthologies, and even adding a touch of romance to the Star Wars universe. In this episode, Zoraida reflects on the importance of writing for yourself, shares the “about the author” blurb that changed her life, and details her tween years as a green-haired Wiccan screamo-punk (you can't make this stuff up). Let's just say that Zoraida's commitment to rejecting the expectations placed on her began at an early age. (And she has the journals to prove it!)***For her reading challenge, Screw the Comfort Zone, Zoraida leans into her love of breaking the rules. To break free from her comfort zone. For her reading challenge, she selected a list of books she has read over the past few years that she adored but seemed "hard to pitch" to publishers because of how they defy convention. Difficult to pitch but still infinitely loveable.

Episode Summary: Swimming has always been something that the black culture can do. Trust me, I've been to the Olympics. Team Nigeria, Team South Africa. It's a problem in the U.S. And it starts with the culture. We have to stop saying we don't swim. Yes. We. Do. Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer Cullen Jones' journey into the sport started with a near drowning when he was five-years old. The experience left him terrified of deep water – as soon as he couldn't touch the floor he would panic. But his mother was adamant that her son learn how to swim and with incredible determination and against a lot of odds, Cullen became one of the fastest in the world. In this episode, Cullen takes us through his journey from being a kid scared to jump into the pool to facing racism at swim meets and going on to break a world record in swimming. He tells us about Brad the instructor who taught him to love swimming and about the time Serena Williams gave him a shout of encouragement before a big race. Cullen also gets candid about the barriers he faced as an African American swimmer, what he is doing now to change the swimming narrative in the Black community, and his mission to ensure underserved communities learn the life-saving skill of swimming. About Cullen Jones:Cullen Jones is a four time Olympic medalist and the first African American to break a world record in swimming. As a member of Team USA, he made history by helping break world records and winning gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in what many say was the most exciting race in Olympic History. Off the pool deck, he is a passionate advocate for water safety. Cullen serves as an ambassador and board member of the USA Swimming Foundation and works with GoldFish Swim School to help make swimming lessons more accessible to underserved communities.Connect with Cullen: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cullenjones41/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cullenjones/?hl=en Team USA: https://www.teamusa.com/profiles/cullen-jonesAbout The BreakoutThe Breakout is the hit podcast hosted by human resources and change experts Dr. Keri Ohlrich and Kelly Guenther. When Trauma is Everywhere - Episode Summary: “I had people say, ‘you still have your legs, what are you complaining about?' It was the worst day of my life, and now people are feeling open to tell me that that experience doesn't count”.In 2013, two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon, a short distance from where Manya Chylinski stood, cheering on the runners. Three people were killed that day, and hundreds were wounded, and while Manya had no physical injuries, she was one of countless bystanders who suffered incredible trauma for years afterwards. As an invisible victim of the attack, Manya was offered no support for her PTSD and zero validation of her experience. That's when she realized how pervasive and disregarded trauma really is, so she decided to change that.In this episode, Manya shares her story of that terrifying day and why she left her career to start educating corporate audiences about compassionate, trauma informed leadership. Manya is on a mission to ensure that everyone is seen and supported in the place where we spend most of our waking hours: the workplace. About Manya ChylinskiManya is a keynote speaker and advocate. Her life took an unexpected turn when the Boston Marathon bombings left her with deep emotional scars and post-traumatic stress. Her healing journey led her to help individuals and organizations reimagine leadership with a focus on empathy and well-being.A communication expert, Manya helps individuals and organizations understand the mental and emotional effects of trauma and build resilience during times of change and crisis. Have we confined the true essence of sainthood within too narrow a boundary? In this episode of 'Voices with Vervaeke,' John Vervaeke welcomes Christopher Mastropeitro and Andrew Sweeny for a discussion that delves into the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of their innovative project, the Philosophical Silk Road. Together, they challenge contemporary notions of sainthood and wisdom, drawing connections between Zen Buddhism, Neoplatonism, and Tantric practices. Through personal anecdotes and reflective dialogue, the trio examines the essence of saints and sages, the importance of humor and humility in spiritual journeys, and the delicate balance between our finite existence and the quest for transcendence. Join John, Chris, and Andrew as they share their spiritual paths and encounters with saintly figures, advocating for a renewed appreciation of the sacred in our modern world. “It was easy for me to say to people ‘your stories are valuable' but when I would turn that lens on myself, I was tongue-tied and embarrassed.” As the founder of Wonderwell Press, a non-fiction publishing company, Maggie Langrick has been a champion of writers for years; in fact she was a huge influence in the development of Keri and Kelly's upcoming book, Whatever the Hell You Want (coming in October!). So when a cancer diagnosis derailed her ambitious business plans, Maggie was forced to finally slow down. And that's when she realized that she actually had a lot to say, if she would only stop discarding her ideas before she'd even explored them.Today, Maggie is a writer, a podcast host, and a writing coach who helps people dig into their own creativity and discover the incredible power of losing the shame and telling their own stories. In this episode Maggie tells how she confronted her self-judgement and learned to listen to her own voice. She also shares what a “full-body ick” is really telling you.About Maggie LangrickMaggie Langrick is a writer, public speaker, media entrepreneur, and host of The Selfish Gift podcast. “The electoral college is a real pain point for the electorate. She also shares the perspective-shifting moments she had while making the documentary, especially her extraordinary experience when she found herself filming at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021.About Maximina JusonMaximina Juson is an award-winning filmmaker and founder of HUMovies, a film and video production company in Los Angeles.
