Depending how you count it, 70:20:10 is almost 40 years old. The model provides a high-level outline of how we learn at work: 10% through formal learning, 20% through working with others, 70% through doing the work. The numbers get criticised, but this insight is widely accepted: Most of what we learn does not come from formal training. But how then should L&D practitioners apply the model to the work that they do? Is it still a useful concept after all this time? In the first of this two-part series, Ross Garner and Owen explore these questions with three practitioners: Ceri Sharples, Learning and Development manager at Somerset Bridge Group; Cath Addis, L&D manager at Ascential; and return guest Carl Akintola-Davis, Head of Leadership Development at Phoenix Group. We discuss: · The history and criticisms of 70:20:10 · How useful the concept is for discussing workplace learning with stakeholders · How to think about the ‘70', the ‘20', and the ‘10' when designing learning programs. For more on the origins of 70:20:10, see this blog post from Charles Jennings of The 702010 Institute, who is joining us next week on the show. Carl's acronym for workplace learning was ‘Performance RECIPES: Reflection, Experimentation, Connection, Information, Practice, Environment and Support'. In ‘What I Learned This Week', Owen discussed a new paper from Nature, which didn't really impress him: Bloom, N., Han, R., & Liang, J. (2024). Hybrid working from home improves retention without damaging performance. Nature, 1-6. Ross learned the unfortunate fate of 440 squirrels. Tata Consultancy Services kicked off the Indian IT services sector's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings yesterday, reporting that clients in the US, the sector's biggest market, were holding back on discretionary spending and that an expected pickup from the previous quarter didn't materialise. Growth was led by a strong performance in the UK, and the company ended the fiscal year 2023 with 6,14,795 employees. Also in this brief, pi Ventures gets a commitment from SIDBI for its next early-stage tech startup fund. Notes: Tata Consultancy Services kicked off the IT services sector's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings yesterday, reporting that clients in the US, the sector's biggest market, were holding back on discretionary spending and that an expected pickup from the previous quarter didn't materialise. Overall, the company reported revenues rose to $7.195 billion in the three months ended March 31, 2023, representing a 1.7 percent increase over the previous quarter and 7.4 percent growth over the same quarter in the previous fiscal year. The year-on-year growth was 10.4 percent in constant currency. The company was operating in a “fairly challenging environment,” CEO and MD Rajesh Gopinathan told reporters at a conference in Mumbai yesterday. The sentiment in the US is currently negative, Gopinathan added. The likelihood of a recession in the US remains high, this year and businesses are postponing any expenditure that isn't immediately necessary. TCS added more than $10 billion in order wins, during Q4, including a $700-750 million contract from the financial giant Phoenix Group. The deal wins also included a larger proportion of contracts worth $50 million or more versus previous quarters, COO NG Subramaniam added. TCS added about 820 employees during the quarter to end the year with about 6,15,000 staff. Attrition on a 12-months basis was just over 20 percent, but the reduction from the previous quarter was 4 percent, chief HR officer Milind Lakkad said. On the tech front, Subramaniam said that conversations with customers are starting and ending with ChatGPT. Customers are asking how TCS is integrating generative AI into its services, and there is keen interest in the area, he said. This isn't an area that is new to TCS and the company has been working “software that can make software,” for example, for years, he added. One other update is that Rajesh Gopinathan is handing over the CEO's role to K Krithivasan on June 1, whereas the transition was originally expected to be completed on Sep. 15. Gopinathan said that this was a planned process wherein the first half of the transition he would be the “primary” and Krithivasan the “shadow” and in the second half, the roles would be reversed. And the second half has been advanced by a couple of weeks. Suzlon Group yesterday announced a new order win for the development of a 50.4 MW wind power project for Sembcorp's renewables subsidiary Green Infra Wind Energy Limited. SimpliContract, a Contract Lifecycle Management platform provider, has raised $3.5 million in series A funding from Emergent Ventures, Kalaari Capital and others. pi Ventures, an early-stage VC firm that invests in tech startups, has received a commitment of Rs. 100 crore from the fund of funds management by SIDBI. The fund is on track for the final close over the next two months, in the range of Rs. 675-750 crore.

Shell's board of directors are being personally sued over their alleged failure to properly manage risks associated with the climate crisis, Euronews reports. The lawsuit, brought by Environmental law charity ClientEarth says the British oil giant's 11 directors have breached their legal duties under the UK's Companies Act by failing to bring their climate strategy in line with the Paris Agreement. Also in this brief, a US lawmaker wants children to be 16 before they can access social media, and how some strange words are breaking ChatGPT. Notes: Tata Consultancy Services has won a new mega order from its long-standing customer Phoenix Group, UK's largest long-term savings and retirements provider, India's biggest IT services company said in a press release earlier this week. The 600-million-pound order (or about $726 million) involves the digital transformation of Phoenix Group's ReAssure business using a platform based on TCS's BaNCS, the company's core banking software platform. A US lawmaker wants to introduce legislation to protect children online and reduce the influence of big tech companies on children, NBC reports. Josh Hawley, a senator in the US Congress wants to establish laws including setting the age threshold to be on social media at 16. Senator Hawley's agenda will include mandating social media companies verify the age of their users, providing parents with a right to demand that tech companies delete their kids' data and commissioning a wide-ranging congressional mental-health study on the impact social media has on children. ChatGPT, the AI chatbot from OpenAI that can turn out poems and essays, fix code and clear MBA exams, is flummoxed by a cluster of keywords, two researchers have discovered, but they don't know why, yet, Vice reports. These keywords — or “tokens,” which serve as ChatGPT's base vocabulary — include Reddit usernames and at least one participant of a Twitch-based Pokémon game. MICHAEL Hello and a very warm welcome to episode 0341 of Five in the Eye - your favourite news review show, right here on Colourful Radio. This is me - Michael Ohajuru - looking forward to looking back over some of the stories that have recently caught our eye. PHIL And this is Phil Woodford joining Michael via Zoom this week and revealing that our top story is going to be about the man they call Big Dog. Or the man who calls himself Big Dog - our Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. He is throwing ‘red meat' to the Tory faithful in the form of action against the BBC, protestors and migrants. MICHAEL For story number two, we ask a question: should the personal statements attached to university applications be abolished? That's the proposal from a professor of social mobility, who argues they work in favour of privileged middle-class applicants. PHIL Meahwhile, supermarket chain Aldi is opening a Shop & Go store in Greenwich, south London. There's no checkout and facial recognition software will determine whether you're old enough to buy alcohol. That's story number three this week. MICHAEL What's at number four? Well, Phoenix Group - the owner of Standard Life - is no longer asking for ‘energetic' and ‘enthusiastic' people in its job ads, as it might put off old people. Like me! PHIL And finally this week, to wrap up the five, it's the news that Prince Andrew apparently has a hissy fit if the maids try to rearrange his teddy bears. MICHAEL I give my maids complete freedom to rearrange my houses! And that's this week's Five in the Eye! +++++
