Key services are lagging behind in Canterbury's Selwyn district as it tries to cope with exponential population growth. Stats NZ data shows it remains the fastest growing district in the country, with 3200 new arrivals in the year to June. Rolleston and Lincoln experienced the biggest jumps, at 9.6% and 8.1% respectively. Massey University sociologist Paul Spoonley told Mike Hosking Selwyn falls behind when it comes to infrastructure. This talk explores the potential consequences of the end of global population growth, examining various scenarios for a world with no growth. With global population growth likely to cease within the next 60 years, some view this shift as a relief from ecological pressures, while others fear it may lead to labor shortages, government fiscal collapse, and aging populations lacking adequate care. Countries with extremely low fertility rates—such as Italy, Japan, and South Korea—could even face the risk of national extinction within a few generations. This talk will investigate these contrasting perspectives, considering whether this shift will be a boon or a doom for the future. Speaker Jack A. Goldstone, Virginia E. and John T. Public Advisory: Priority Immigration Processing Continues With Expression of Interest Model, released by Newfoundland on 19 February 2025 Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Newfoundland. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario. | Immigration, Population Growth and Skills February 19, 2025 To ensure the best use of the province's limited economic immigration capacity, the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) and Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) have moved to an expression of interest model. An expression of interest model uses a two-step process requiring individuals to first submit a short form identifying key characteristics, such as their occupation, education, language and willingness to reside in the province. These forms will then be reviewed and select individuals will then be invited to complete a full NLPNP or AIP application. This change ensures immigration spaces are allocated strategically throughout the year, while helping employers respond to evolving labour market needs in sectors such as health care and education. Applications submitted prior to the transition to this new model will remain valid in the Provincial Government's Immigration Accelerator platform. All individuals with an active application submitted to the department will be contacted regarding their next steps. Some individuals will move directly to application process, while others will be prompted to submit an expression of interest. The determination on those who will bypass the expression of interest step will be made based on a case-by-case assessment of their application alongside the same criteria that will be used for expression of interest assessments. Due to this change, decisions on applications may now take three months or more in some cases. The commitment to excellent customer service remains and applications will continue to be processed as efficiently as possible. Questions about this change can be directed to immigration@gov.nl.ca. Historically, the Provincial Government processed immigration applications on a first-come, first-serve basis. This changed in late 2024 when historic demand and limited economic immigration spaces resulted in a shift to priority processing. Implementing an expression of interest model further builds on the shift to priority processing with a model widely used across Canada. In January 2025, the Provincial Government also announced a pause on the processing of Job Vacancy Assessments and AIP Designations for employers. This pause continues, and further updates will be made in the coming weeks. After successfully negotiating the return of 1,000 economic immigration spaces from the Federal Government, Newfoundland and Labrador currently has 2,525 spaces for 2025. This capacity remains well below demand and the Provincial Government continues to advocate for further increases to economic immigration spaces to support provincial economic and population growth. | You can always access past news from the Province of Newfoundland by visiting this link: https://myar.me/tag/nl/. In December, the Census Bureau announced that the U.S. population had grown by nearly 1% in the year ended July 1st, 2024, marking the strongest annual gain since 2001[1]. Given this, it seems strange to be already talking about slowing population growth. However, the reality is that the gap between births and deaths is continuing to shrink, with almost all of our recent population growth coming from immigration. Going forward, if immigration is dramatically curtailed, overall population growth could turn negative by the middle of the next decade while the working-age population would immediately start to contract. In East Asia, high marriage rates coexist with some of the world's lowest fertility rates. So, why are so few children born in these societies?  And  how is this related to the strongly embedded cultural and Confucianist influences?Professors Sunha Myong, Jungjae Park, and Junjian Yi investigate the cultural and socioeconomic factors shaping these trends. Using a mathematical model, the team explore how deeply rooted social norms – like unequal childcare and stigma against out-of-wedlock births – impact fertility decisions. Importantly, they examine how shifts in gender roles and government policies could hold the key to reversing declining birth rates.Read the original research: doi.org/10.1093/jeea/jvaa048

Therapist, psychic, what's the difference? That's what we're asking about Sarah's intuition, perception, and ability to read people, and it runs in the family. A political activist/novelist in Japan thinks the answer to Japan's population growth problem involves sterilizing women. Seems like this wouldn't solve the problem, but we do have some alternative suggestions. Sarah is really into the idea of communal living and wonders why communes have such a bad reputation when they might be the solution to a love of societal woes. We hear a new story about our old pal Brian Johnson, who is trying to cheat death and become immortal or something. Despite his claims that his aim is about longevity and health, it seems he's feeling a little self-conscious about his gaunt appearance and is looking to fillers to solve the problem. Sarah explains what Love Island Australia is doing to ensure the cast is safe and that consent for intimacy is explicit, and she is hoping it catches on across reality tv and in real life.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 50% off your first order, head to https://www.smalls.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDYGet an exclusive 20% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYVisit https://www.betterhelp.com/BRAINCANDY today to get 10% off your first month.Get $10 off any order and enjoy free shipping when you subscribe at https://nutrafol.com and enter the promo code BRAINCANDYGIFTSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Every time I see data about the changing demographics in the U.S., it seems like my jaw drops open. Population Growth: 70% of the U.S. population growth between 2022 and 2023 is attributed to Latinos, a trend that shows no signs of slowing. Economic Force: Latino youth are projected to contribute 78% of all net new U.S. workers by 2030, and Hispanic consumer spending is outpacing non-Hispanic spending in key areas like personal care, home electronics, and new cars. 25% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha are Latino 94% of Latinos under age 18 are born and raised in the U.S. Did you know all that, cause I sure didn't. And when I think about this from a marketing standpoint, it's clear that brands need to factor these changing demographics into their strategies. The data I mentioned came from the U.S. Latino Youth 2030 Report, conducted by Kantar in Collaboration with the Latino Donor Collaborative. The recent stock assessment revealed a substantial rise in the population of female Pacific bluefin tuna able to reproduce, showing that international efforts to protect and manage the species have been effective in reversing the decline and promoting population growth. This success story highlights the severe threats faced by the Pacific bluefin tuna population due to overfishing, with the stock plummeting by over 96% from its historic high. Despite these challenges, there has been a notable turnaround in the population status, particularly in increasing the number of reproductive females, a crucial milestone in the conservation of this species. The conservation success of the Pacific bluefin tuna demonstrates that with dedicated efforts and effective management strategies, it is possible to reverse the decline of marine species and promote their recovery. The increase in the number of reproductive females is a positive sign for the future sustainability of the Pacific bluefin tuna population. The significant rise in the number of female Pacific bluefin tuna capable of reproductive success showcases the effectiveness of conservation efforts and emphasizes the importance of continued collaboration and conservation measures to ensure the long-term survival of this iconic species. The overfishing of Pacific bluefin tuna had devastating consequences, leading to a staggering 96% drop in population from its historic high. This drastic decline highlighted the urgent need for immediate and effective conservation measures to prevent the species from facing extinction. The episode discusses how a scientific report in 2012 revealed the alarming state of the Pacific bluefin tuna population, emphasizing the severe impact of overfishing on the species. The significant decrease in the Pacific bluefin tuna population served as a wake-up call, indicating that urgent action was required to reverse the trend of depletion. The episode mentions how the exploitation of these large and valuable fish for commercial purposes, such as the celebratory auction where a Japanese sushi chain purchased a bluefin tuna for $1.7 million, demonstrated how financial interests often outweighed conservation concerns. The episode also touches upon the slow growth and long lifespan of tuna species, making their recovery a lengthy and challenging process. The conservation success story of the Pacific bluefin tuna serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing that with coordinated international efforts and effective management strategies, it is possible to reverse the decline of overexploited marine species. This success story underscores the importance of implementing sustainable fishing practices and conservation measures to protect vulnerable marine species like the Pacific bluefin tuna. The episode highlights the exploitation of endangered tuna species by corporations for profit, noting how the value of individual tuna species can increase as they become more endangered. This phenomenon occurs because the scarcity of a species drives up its market value, making each individual catch more lucrative for those involved in the fishing industry. In the case of the Pacific bluefin tuna, despite facing a significant decline in population due to overfishing, there were instances where a Japanese sushi chain purchased a bluefin tuna for a staggering $1.7 million in a celebratory auction. This exorbitant price tag demonstrates how the demand for these endangered species can lead to inflated prices, creating a financial incentive for exploitation. Furthermore, the episode mentions a common practice where corporations catch endangered tuna species, freeze them for extended periods, and then sell them at a higher price when the species is on the brink of extinction. This strategy essentially turns the exploitation of endangered species into an investment opportunity for these corporations, prioritizing short-term profits over the long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems. The documentary "End of the Line," referenced in the episode, provides further insight into the exploitation of tuna species for profit. It delves into the practices of the tuna industry in various regions, shedding light on the detrimental impact of overfishing and the commodification of endangered species. Overall, the episode underscores the alarming trend where the increasing rarity of certain tuna species can paradoxically drive their commercial value up, leading to their exploitation by corporations solely for financial gain. This highlights the urgent need for robust conservation measures and sustainable fishing practices to protect these vulnerable marine species from further exploitation and potential extinction.
