Future of Work Sherpa Dan Smolen digs into the WHY of building workplace leadership culture with guest Bret Packard. Over a 30-year corporate career, Bret "crushed it" at managing large global teams tasked with scaling profits and market dominance. And, he was rewarded well for his hard work. But Bret discovered early on that he wasn't the leader of people that he wanted or needed to be. Inspired by the corporate manager to whom he reported, Bret embarked on a journey to connect well with the people on his teams. And when he emerged as an effective leader, his people enjoyed better engagement and more success in their work and careers. Bret also benefitted from a career-long commitment to journaling. Often, he refers to the 30 years of insight that fills the pages of the 89 journals that he kept. Bret draws on the wisdom in those journals to empower The Packard Network's followers to become effective leaders. Main podcast segment begins at 3:05 In a wide ranging discussion, Bret: Describes The Packard Network and its value to people in the workplace. Starts at 4:45 Provides a summary of his 30-year corporate career and his journey to becoming a good and effective leader. Starts at 7:16 Explains why building a workplace leadership culture is important now and to the future of work. Starts at 13:03 Provides insight on why leaders must adopt new skill to empower Generation Z workforce members. Starts at 18:41 Answers the question: are we hiring the right people to be leaders that the workplace needs? Starts at 28:11 Bret reflects on his own leadership journey, saying: "I was a master at managing. So, things like strategy, plans, processes--that was me. But the part that I didn't have down pat was connecting with people through vision, culture, ecosystem, and the way [that you communicate] with people." Building workplace leadership culture helps people to own their professional success. It truly is mission critical in the future of work. There's a simple yet powerful tactic for driving the sort of diversity that bolsters the performance and health of your business. In a word: sponsorship. To do well in a system that favors the “in” group, those outside need a champion or a sponsor. Women, it turns out, have plenty of mentors, but not nearly as many sponsors as men do.   Sponsorship occurs whenever one person of influence promotes the achievements, capabilities and future potential of someone else.   What is the difference between a mentor and a sponsor? Although mentoring conversations can be useful, these happen privately. Sponsorship is public. Mentors proffer friendly advice, sponsors pull you up to the next level.   So, what sponsorship behaviors are most effective?   Susan Drumm, CEO Coach, shares a list of ways that you and your senior colleagues can sponsor a woman on your team and make all the difference in their career.

Christy Beem explores the ever-critical issue of how to keep an organization open to new ideas. An organization that has a huge welcome mat out for new ideas and leverages the diversity of thought from each stakeholder, no matter title, age, tenure, whether that person has hitherto had beneficial ideas, or any other factor, is a company that can adapt to prosper in changing conditions and identify challenges early enough to prevent downfalls. Why isn't every workplace like this? What does it take to lead an organization that actively embraces new ideas? What are practical steps a leader can take to demonstrate with actions and not just words that new ideas are wanted? What's the cost of not being open to new ideas from everyone?

Like those little nuances in a conversation that lead to innovation, that lead to resolving challenges before they become too big." John English and I discuss the Emotional Intelligence. The way we work is undergoing major change and Kati Barklund is an excellent person to help us understand the future of work - or workplace strategy as she refers to it. Over the course of her career she has spent time working in all of the relevant areas. She has specialized in the physical during her time working in service and operations development at Coor, she specialized in the digital during her time working in Microsoft and now she works on Workplace Leadership and Culture at Tenant and Partner. It was when she was managing innovation projects that she discovered that Physical workplace, Digital workplace and the Psycho-social workplace (Leadership & Culture) are all intertwined and that all of them need to be considered if we are to create great workplace experiences. In our conversation we talk about: - Why it shouldn’t be called the future of work as all of the components are already here - How recent changes have resulted in a demand for more meaningful work - Why the workplace is mainly about engagement and empowerment - How the expectations are different for the range of generations in the workplace - How workplace can be a strategic tool - Why, despite all the technology that exists, we still need to meet face to face More about Tenant and Partner here https://www.tenantandpartner.com/en/

Workplace bullying. Chances are we've all seen or experienced it at least once in our lives. From the extreme of sexual or physical assault, to the subtler eye-rolls that exist in the ‘grey area' of bullying. Dr Victor Sojo, a lecturer and Research Fellow at the Centre for Workplace Leadership at the University of Melbourne, says all these negative behaviours can lead to a toxic work environment and, as a result, impact on productivity. “At the most basic level within organisations, people need to make rules clear about what behaviour is acceptable and what behaviour is not acceptable,” he says. And the #MeToo movement is increasingly defining what's not acceptable. Dr Sojo says that's giving people who have been feeling marginalised, disrespected and abused the opportunity to speak up. “We need more women in positions of power so that they could actually have a voice about how we are going to manage the situation. This is very important, because right now, I'm a guy talking about this.” Episode recorded: December 21, 2018. Interviewer: Louise Bennet. Producer and editor: Chris Hatzis. Dr. Eunhwa Yang is an assistant professor in the School of Building Construction at Georgia Tech where her scholarly passion lies in the area of sustainable building practices and the relationship between people and the built environment. Mike Petrusky asks Dr. Yang about her research and the insights she has gained regarding workplace leadership, innovation, change management and the human side of adopting new technologies. The talent gap in the FM community has led Dr. Yang to pursue a partnership with the IFMA Atlanta Chapter which allows her to bring experiential learning to the students at GT. Passing along knowledge through personal interaction and the importance of communication and partnerships are the keys to success when proving our value in the workplace. While isolation and a lack of human interaction leads to loneliness, Mike and Dr. Yang discuss how workplace leaders have an opportunity to address this problem with thoughtful strategies for the built environment. Dr. Yang also recognizes the role of the IFMA Foundation in her career development and she shares her desire to give back to the next generation in the FM community, while Mike tries to impress us with his knowledge of classical music! With core competencies of strategic thinking, design, and change management, Signal’s interest is in design thinking - as a full process of discovery, design and delivery - and Per explains Signal’s ‘mental rebuilding’ concept, their trademarked approach that drives their in some ways counter-intuitive business model. Just over a year ago Signal was acquired by Facilities Services giant ISS as part of their own workplace strategy.
