What happens when two traditional "alpha males"—a former rugby league champion and an ex-infantryman—sit down for a raw, unfiltered conversation about modern masculinity? Prepare to be challenged. In this powerful episode from the archives, host Andy Lopata brings together Luke Ambler, founder of the transformative men's support network Andy's Man Club, and Dion Jensen, a New Zealand special forces veteran and mental health advocate. Born from environments where showing weakness was a liability, both men now champion vulnerability as the ultimate strength. This is not a comfortable, politically correct chat. It's a no-holds-barred exploration of the "toxic masculinity" debate, the role of men in a post-#MeToo world, and the crucial impact of leadership in shaping culture. From the changing rooms of professional sports to the front lines of conflict, Luke and Dion dissect why men struggle to open up and how leaders can create the psychological safety needed for genuine connection and high performance. This is the conversation every leader needs to hear about the unspoken dynamics in their teams. Key Takeaways Is the ultimate display of a leader's strength actually their willingness to be vulnerable first? What if "toxic masculinity" isn't a personality trait, but a product of the environments we fail to control? Why might the most effective champions for mental health be the very "alpha males" society often misunderstands? How can you create a culture of absolute safety where your team feels empowered to take off their "masks" and connect? Actionable Insights Lead with Vulnerability: In your next team meeting, be the first to share a professional challenge you're facing or a recent mistake you learned from. By modeling vulnerability, you grant permission for others to be open and build a foundation of trust. Define Your Environment's Rules: As a leader, you are the chief of your tribe. Explicitly define and communicate the non-negotiable cultural rules for your team (e.g., "We address conflict directly," "We celebrate each other's wins"). An undefined environment breeds toxicity. Engineer Hope into Your Check-ins: Borrowing from Andy's Man Club, don't just ask your team what's wrong. Make it a mandatory part of every one-on-one or team meeting to ask, “Tell me one positive from your week.” This actively builds a culture of hope and resilience. It's Warrior Wednesday on The Other Side of Midnight! Lynn Shaw of Lynn's Warriors joins Lionel to expose the overlooked truth: America is failing its boys. Lionel dives deep into the toxic culture surrounding young men, examining the dangers of "toxic masculinity" and the rise of online rage groups. Lynn details how Big Tech prioritizes profit over children and discusses key legislative efforts like the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). Get essential, actionable advice on becoming a "warrior" in your own home and inoculating children against this destruction. Lynn's Warriors is committed to raising awareness and ending exploitation by grassroots mobilization, advocacy, and education. Lionel critiques the current political landscape, arguing that Republicans "don't know how to fight" and often rely on "WWE politics" instead of effective messaging. He aims to be the "psychologist general" in charge of propaganda, exposing how "narrowcasting" obscures the truth about the "shadow government" the real force running the show, controlling image and mood. Topics range from Hollywood's output to fundamental Constitutional issues like the separation of church and state. Lionel argues that the current political climate suggests America is headed for a "civil war" of an internal nature, fueled by those who view white Americans and patriots as the enemy. Lionel delivers an intellectual "complete and total reset" for listeners, often referring to his methodology as a form of "fecal transplantation" for the mind. Lionel provides strategies for winning the intellectual war, including the necessity to weaponize humor, spotlight the rot of systems with style, and flood the zone with truth. Lionel urges his listeners to move on and not waste time arguing with those who don't know the facts, emphasizing that the goal is to win Pop culture nostalgia and unpredictable conversations, beginning with the colossal legacy of The Ed Sullivan Show. Discover how the "stiff" host introduced everyone from Elvis (forced to be filmed waist-up) to the Beatles. The show also features hilarious and detailed anecdotes about bizarre Catholic rituals and unexpected calls about cryptic nicknames and the enduring fear of clowns. Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when a generation of children are raised to fear softness, sensitivity, and touch? In this solo reflection, I look at the unspoken culture of homophobia and repression in boarding schools — where words like “you're gay” became weapons of humiliation. Drawing from Boarding School Syndrome by Joy Schaverien, Trauma, Abandonment & Privilege by Nick Duffell, and reflections from Stephen Fry, I explore how this culture shaped our sense of identity, sexuality, and emotional expression. This conversation isn't about sexuality alone — it's about how we learned to disconnect from the lover within and how healing means bringing that energy back to life.--- Piers is an author and a men's transformational coach and therapist who works mainly with trauma, boarding school issues, addictions and relationship problems. There are fears more and more teenage boys are being drawn into a world of extremism and toxic masculinity through exposure to misognistic ideas promoted online and by infamous social media influencers. It is showing up in New Zealand classrooms and in the blatant disrespect for female teachers, according to a report by the Auckland & Wellinton regions of the Post Primary teachers association. Teacher and Auckland PPTA regional chair Paul Stevens presented the paper at a conference this week and spoke to Lisa Owen.
Send us a textIn this episode of Sick & Tired Recovery, my guest William opens up about what it was like to grow up constantly questioning his worth as a man. Shaped by society's standards of masculinity—what he should look like, how he should act, and what success should mean—William carried a deep sense of not being “enough.” We talk about how these pressures influenced his choices, his relationships, and his self-image, and how he's working today to rewrite the story of manhood on his own terms. This conversation is about breaking free from harmful expectations, finding strength in vulnerability, and discovering that true manhood is about authenticity, not approval.Support the show

Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. Hey, this week we actually predominantly deal with questions from you all. We had a question about the chronology of the book of John and the synoptic Gospels, and why they do things with chronology that don't make sense. We had a question about some comments Alex made about toxic masculinity, and we got into what Jesus thinks about masculinity and what's different about that than this other terminology that we hear thrown around casually. So without any further ado, let's dive into these significant questions.
In this enlightening episode of Scary Talk, Jon Lee Brody welcomes the talented filmmaker Justin Tipping. Others are letting technology isolate and depress them. What is it about boys' psychology that makes them so vulnerable to the Internet Age? How does patriarchy lead well-intentioned parents to treat their sons less affectionately? When will men have a liberation movement—and do they deserve one?
