Al Martino was an Italian singer and actor. He played Johnny Fontane in the original “Godfather,” “Godfather III” and the trilogy. He also sang the theme for the film. Al told me that he was blacklisted after he played the Fontane part because his character portrayal was based on Italian singer Frank Sinatra. Director of the movie, Francis Ford Coppola originally took the part away from Martino and gave it to Vic Damone, but ultimately Al got the part. Marino had a ton of hit records on the Billboard charts.
One of the most popular singing stars of his day, the Brooklyn-born crooner soared to stardom with the song "I Have But One Heart". His other hits include "You're Breaking My Heart" and "On the Street Where You Live".
Pat Morita was the original Arnold on “Happy Days” and Mr. Miyagi in the “Karate Kid” films. Pat was nominated for an Oscar for that role. He also played Captain Sam Pak on M*A*S*H and Ah Chew in “Sanford and Son.” Morita was born in California to Japanese immigrant parents. In his years as a comedian, he would describe his parent's Chinese restaurant as, operated in a black neighborhood with a clientele of blacks, Filipinos and everybody else who didn't fit in any of the other neighborhoods. While a comic he opened for Redd Foxx, Connie Stevens and Vic Damone. The last time I saw pat was in a small restaurant in Las Vegas. My friend Gene told me not to go up to him while he was having dinner. He was such a nice person that I'm sure he wouldn't have minded a quick hello. By the time we finished eating, he was gone.
Thank Heaven for this 1958 masterpiece, with a score for the ages by Lerner and Loewe. Performances from the film, outtakes, and various pop and stage renditions (Vic Damone, Andre Previn). You'll remember it well!

#736 - David Martin The David Martin Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Okay! Everyone's here. It's The Paul Leslie Hour and you're welcome here. This is an interview from the archives with songwriter David Martin, known for being a part of the songwriting group of Arnold, Martin & Morrow. Now… David Martin lives and breathes the songs. Chances are, you've heard something David Martin wrote. His songs have sold over 26 million records around the world, but all stories have a beginning. For the British singer-songwriter, he began his career as a member of the group Butterscotch on RCA Records. Soon after, he formed a songwriting partnership with Chris Arnold and Geoff Morrow. The partnership resulted in many the composition of many songs recorded by the true legends of recorded music, including Cliff Richard, Wayne Newton, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, and Mama Cass. The legendary Elvis Presley recorded four of their songs: “Let's Be Friends,” “A Little Bit of Green,” “Sweet Angeline” and “This is the Story.” Quick side note, how many of you are planning on seeing the new movie simply entitled “ELVIS” releasing on June 24th? We can't wait… Now, one of the songs David Martin wrote has brought many smiles to the world. David Martin's song “Can't Smile Without You” would become a pop standard and worldwide hit after being recorded by Barry Manilow. Manilow was not the first, nor the last artist to record the song. The Carpenters, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Gino Cunico and others would perform and record their own versions. The song has been performed countless times in concert, been featured in motion pictures. The song earned Martin three BMI awards for over 3 million airplays. Although HE continues to write songs, he is still very much a singer. He has a great admiration for the great songwriters of the American Songbook, those lyricists and composers who wrote the standards: Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and Sammy Cahn. It is his love for these American classics that resulted in his album “Silky Smooth Moments.” Accompanied by the Terry Coffey Trio, David Martin sings standards like “I'll Be Seeing You” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” and one written by David Martin himself. It's a beautiful gesture from David Martin. Although he has accomplished so much with his own songs, he pays tribute to the great songwriters who came before him. We invite you into the world and passion of David Martin, where songs with great messages never die. They endure. If you get a moment, perhaps you'll help us out. Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support And we thank you! Now we present our interview with a lovely man, music's own David Martin. The Paul Leslie Hour - Helping People Tell Their Stories is a talk show with new episodes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. If our last episode was one of the saddest we will ever cover on our podcast, this was one of the happiest. On May 24, 1973, underneath an enormous tent on the grounds of the White House, the largest state dinner and event ever held occured in honor of the Vietnam Prisoners of War. It was a star-studded event. Bob Hope hosted with guests the New Christy Minstrels, Phyllis Diller, Joey Harrington, Vic Damone, Edgar Bergman, Ricardo Montalban, Jimmy Stewart, Roy Acuff and the Smokey Mountain Boys, Irving Berlin and the Legendary Actor John Wayne. All of whom played tribute to the soldiers of Vietnam. The event was the visionary idea of one famous entertainer, Sammy Davis Jr. , and he will come on and sing a few songs including an incredibly moving moment with Irving Berlin singing his song " God Bless America". It was a night like no other and when it was over we listen in on a call between President Richard Nixon and his new Chief of Staff, a former General and assistant National Security Advisor during the Vietnam War, Alexander Haig. In it they talk about the power of this night and how no matter what was to come, this night and the honoring of our now free, former POW's had made it all worth it. The call ends with a very powerful moment between the two men as Al Haig ends the call with some powerful words for a discouraged President as Nixon steals himself for the horrible days he knows are sure to be coming at the hands of a rabid conglomeration of enemies. On a side note, this is so far my favorite episode because it brings so many legendary figures into one episode honoring some of our greatest Americans and we get to see Richard Nixon at his best, in one of his finest hours, as one of our greatest American Leaders.

God puts people in our lives for a reason: to teach us, to inspire us, to allow us to be a blessing to them. There are no accidental encounters, only ones that shape us into who we were created to be. Victoria Damone grew up in a family of entertainment royalty, as the daughter of ‘50s crooner Vic Damone and actress Judy Rawlins. But show business wasn’t always kind to Victoria and her sisters, and they had to learn to survive by relying on each other through their parents’ absence and their mother’s struggle with addiction. As she grew older, Victoria forged her own path by working for a faith-based organization, OneShare Health, as a way to combine her love of people and God. Catherine Wood has always kept faith at the heart of her life, but that faith has been tested through the financial ups and downs she’s faced throughout her investing career. After Cathie tried to navigate the financial peculiarities leading up to the 2008 economic crash, a member of her church introduced her to Jesus Calling, which Cathie’s read every day since. In 2014, Cathie founded her own company called ARK Invest, to find and fund transformative technologies that could change lives and make the world a better place. And yet those are the individuals that need the most love and understanding.” - Victoria Damone “I never felt that God was leaving me or deserting me. Our stories are a combination of pain and beauty, of grief and love, of despair and wonder. In the moments when pain and isolation threaten to engulf us, God is there to lift us up and, as our guest Mattie Jackson Selecman says, sprinkle “tidbits of joy” along our darkest paths. Growing up, Mattie watched her dad, country music superstar Alan Jackson, sing songs that connected with people across the country, and she knew she was born to tell stories just like him. But Mattie never could’ve imagined one of the stories she’d tell would be a tragic story of her own: losing her newlywed husband Ben in an accident. With God’s help, and with her Jesus Calling devotional by her side, Mattie began to put the pieces of her life back together and found healing in the very ministry that she co-founded to heal others, NaSHEville. Music journalist Deborah Evans Price passionately chased her dream to tell stories behind some of country and Christian music’s biggest stars, becoming a full-time journalist at Billboard Magazine. But Deborah learned firsthand that just because part of your dream works out doesn’t mean your whole life will fall into place. As Deborah tackled an unexpected cancer diagnosis, she learned there’s true joy in allowing others to come alongside us and care for us when we’re at our lowest. Our guest is singer Steven Maglio whose sound is reminiscent of the great Frank Sinatra. THE NEW YORK TIMES said of Steve, “Steven Maglio does not have blue eyes, but with his smooth croon & Rat Pack swagger, listeners just might imagine they were at the Copa Room at the Sands in 1963.” While Steven Maglio is a singer of standards. Although he is especially appreciated for his renditions of songs made popular by Frank Sinatra, he is NOT an impersonator. https://www.stevenmaglio.com/home THE BEGINNING I was born in East Harlem, N.Y. on December 25, 1958. In 1966, we moved to the Bronx, and being the new kid on the block, I walked back and forth to school alone for the first few weeks. I heard Frank Sinatra singing “My Kind Of Town,” and to pass the time on my new daily trek, I would sing the song to myself over and over. After a few days, I decided I needed another song and began to explore the only Sinatra album we owned at the time, “A Man And His Music.” This was the beginning of my addiction, not only to Sinatra, but to that whole world of standard songs and singers. It wasn't until age 43, after eight years of secretly taking voice lessons and one year of cruising the New Jersey karaoke circuit, that I made my professional debut at New York City's “Tavern On The Green,” as male vocalist with Joe Battaglia & The New York Big Band in June, 2002. Since then I've performed from Atlantic City to Las Vegas, from Cape Cod to Nashville, from Palm Beach to Beverly Hills, and from Brazil to Ecuador to Italy. In 2004, I started performing Frank Sinatra tribute shows at The Carnegie Club in New York, and I'm still singing there every Saturday evening. I've had the pleasure of entertaining President & Mrs. Donald Trump, Lisa Lampanelli, Vic Damone, Connie Francis, Jackie Mason, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, William Shatner, Brad Garrett, Dennis Farina, The Kennedy Family, and most of the cast of “The Sopranos,” just to name a few. As well as multiple sports figures, politicians, business moguls, and members of the press. I've had the honor of sharing the stage with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Frankie Valli, Wayne Newton, Dionne Warwick, Deana Martin, Tony Danza, Danny Aiello, Steve Tyrell, Joe Piscopo, Bucky Pizzarelli, Pat Cooper, Norm Crosby, Larry King, Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge, The Spinners, and on a few occasions with Frank Sinatra's former pianist/conductor, Vincent Falcone, among others. I've appeared in the movies, “Frank & Alice,” “Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn,” “Once More With Feeling,” and in the music video, “For One More Day.” I've also sung “The Tender Trap” on the soundtrack of “My Best Friend's Girl.” In the Off-Broadway play, “Playing Sinatra,” my recordings of 11 popular Sinatra songs were used to replace the originals. I've released three CDs, “You Belong To Me & other songs Sinatra never recorded,” “Songs For Sinatra Lovers,” and “Sinatra en Bossa Nova.” Special highlights in my career were being the co-writer and official singer of “The Danny DeVito Limoncello Song,” used to promote the lemon flavored liquore that bore Danny DeVito's signature. Joining the all-star cast of The Cannolis television show. Becoming a member of the most prestigious organization in show business, The Friars Club. It's been a wild ride, and I'm far from being finished. The most common compliment paid to me is, “If Frank Sinatra heard the way you sing his songs …. he'd be proud.” AND I HOPE THAT'S TRUE ….. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/RickLertzman/support

On February 11, 2018 Vic Damone passed away. Vic was one of the great vocalists from the late 1940's on who sang songs from the great American Songbook. To remember Vic on the show today, I thought I would play some of his early hit records and then a few songs from a live performance at Basin Street East which was in New York City. The great vocalists are quickly passing away but at least we can listen to their recordings as we remember them. Vic was 89 when he passed away and luckily for us he left a large recorded legacy. I hope you enjoy this look at the career and music of the late Vic Damone. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com
Motown Records went as far in defining the sound of the 1960’s as any other label; probably more than most. And in this episode of Memory in Top 40 Music, we look back at the top of the chart for the week of September 4, 1961, when the first Motown record to hit the Number 1 spot on the pop charts entered the Hot 100. In our Memory Jogger feature, we remember the late Dennis Edwards, Craig MacGregor, Barbara Ann Alston and Vic Damone. RARE & SCRATCHY ROCK 'N ROLL #041 - ROCK, POP, AND COUNTRY STARS WHO SANG COMMERCIAL JINGLES - Part 2 Some of the biggest rock, pop, and country stars sang jingles – those catchy commercials about soft drinks, cereal, clothing, cars, and lots of other products and services. Several superstars just sang jingles at the beginning of their careers, while others recorded them concurrently with their regular repertoire. There’s so much fun material here that we’ve made this a two-part podcast. And on part two, we’ll identify one of the most famous, yet least publicly-known female voices in the music business. We'll also hear from the Jefferson Airplane, Iron Butterfly, Neil Diamond, Chuck Berry, Barry Manilow, Johnny Rivers, the Four Seasons, Vic Damone, the Four Freshmen, the Beach Boys, Buddy Holly, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, Jerry Butler, Jose Feliciano, and many others singing to sell blue jeans, chewing gum, restaurants, department stores, sun tan lotion, and batteries. Just as he did with part one of this two part-podcast. Ken Deutsch, our resident “rockologist” and pre-eminent jingle producer, co-hosts. So, please stay with us more of what Ken and I call “Singling and Jingling.”

The Garden of Allah was a famous hotel in Hollywood, California located at 8152 Sunset Boulevard between Crescent Heights and Havenhurst on the east end of the Sunset Strip. Built in 1913, it was owned by a famous silent film era star named Alla Nazimova, the highest paid silent film era actress at the time. This 2.5 acre estate featured a series of private bungalows surrounding a swimming pool and it was home to some of the biggest names in Hollywood at one time or another. Buster Keaton, Groucho Marx, Greta Garbo, Orson Wells, Frank Sinatra, Red Skelton, Jackie Gleason, Vic Damone, F. Scott Fitzgerald and many others called Allah home at some point in their lives. It became a notorious party spot and everyone in Hollywood had heard plenty of wild stories about the place. Alla Nazimova hit a rough patch financially and professionally and the Garden would change ownership a handful of times before finally being bought and torn down in 1959 after a steady decline in business. Today there is no trace of The Garden remaining on Sunset Blvd and Alla Nazimova has basically been erased from the history books. So what the heck happened??? How does a hot piece of property owned by one of the biggest stars in the world go from being the most notorious spot in Hollywood to completely erased from history? Martin Turnbull is the leading expert on the topic and an author. He is my guest on this episode and teaches us all about this incredible place and it's infamous Hollywood history. Thanks For Listening! www.martinturnbull.com www.facebook.com/oddpodcast www.twitter.com/odd_podcast Email: theoddpodcast@gmail.com

Impact: The force with which two lives come together. Sometimes for good, sometimes for evil. Dan and Vicky come together and it's ALL for the good as they look at the little remembered B-movie from 1949, Impact. The movie that asks: If your wife's lover botches a hit on you and accidentally kills himself AND the world mistakes his charred body for yours, could you let your wife hang for a murder she didn't actually successfully commit? And how do you pay back the surprisingly progressive Chinese maid who saves the day -- and your butt? Dan and Vicky take a wild trip through film noir territory with some detours for exciting Supreme Court rulings, cowboy weddings in upstate New York, random thoughts on death and growing old and the musical stylings of Vic Damone. DEEP Impact is more like it. Hot Date 7 with Dan and Vicky. Black, white and RED hot all over!

Among the more prominent of the pop-singing crooners of the mid-twentieth century, Vic Damone recorded more than 2,000 songs during an active career that began in 1947 and spanned 54 years. With a lush and mellow baritone, he possessed one of the finest singing voices of his era and was widely acknowledged by critics as one of the best crooner of the times. Even in his later concerts, his voice never faltered nor did it lose its easy tone. Instead, according to critics, the depth of emotion in his singing voice was improved by life experience as he aged. Damone, who announced his retirement in 2000, embarked on a farewell tour that lasted into 2001. With a sold-out concert at Florida's Kravis Center in February of 2001 and his ultimate farewell concert set at Carnegie Hall in May of that year, Damone closed the chapter on one of the most impressive singing careers on record.
