The year was 1984. Prince came out with “Purple Rain.” Bruce Springsteen was touring for “Born in the USA.” And on the south side of Milwaukee, America’s polka king, Frankie Yankovic, performed at the Our Lady Queen of Peace parish festival. In attendance that day was six-year-old Mike Schneider. The Yankovic concert changed his life because it inspired Schneider to pick up the accordion. WPR’s Nick Rommel recently talked with the Wisconsin Polka Hall of Famer at a gig in Eagle.
At 82, funk pioneer Sly Stone has passed away. Sydney Sweeney has secretly gained 30 pounds for an upcoming role. Weird Al had one #1 hit - can you guess which? Pepsi isn't vegan, elephants get old, and remember when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock?
Jimmy addresses the latest news, like Trump stumbling while walking up the stairs of Air Force One, before speaking with Robert De Niro and "Weird Al" Yankovic.
Jon is on his path of redemption with Kevin because of the last episode he was on. However, the two giggle throughout this episode and movie because it's just so damn funny. They discuss "Weird Al's" discography, the cast of this movie, and how stupid this movie is.Kevin's Link: https://linktr.ee/kevinwatchesmoviesPodcast Socials -Email: butasongpod@gmail.comFacebook: @butasongpodInstagram: @butasongpodTikTok: @butasongpodTwitter: @butasongpodNext episode: Bells Are Ringing!

It's one of those days… but in the best way possible! Lauren is joined by the delightfully nerdy and wonderfully weird Jeff Nucera (aka UHJeff) to talk all about the song “One of Those Days” from Polka Party! You might know Jeff as one of the filmmakers behind Tight & Nerdy—the fabulous documentary about the world's first Weird Al-themed burlesque troupe. (Yes, that's a real thing, and yes, it's amazing.)We dive into this underrated Al deep cut and revel in its over-the-top absurdity, dark humor, and surprising relatability.Oh—and we discover a truly wild coincidence about each other that will have you saying, “What are the odds?!”So crack open a cold one, embrace the chaos, and settle in for a joyfully weird ride. Because even on one of those days, Beer'd Al makes everything better.
On today's episode, we're diving into a cult classic that redefined what it means to be weird, hilarious, and just downright absurd. A movie showing the world that Weird Al Yankovic should be protected at all costs. This movie showed us the greatest hotdog/twinkie combination of all time and taught us that broads don't belong in braodcasting, that gun control is for wimps and commies, and that life is like a mop. Episode 4 of our Grape Expectations Series features Moby Grape & Skip Spence biographer Cam Cobb talking about Skip's rollercoaster ride through those early days of Moby Grape, a tale which includes disastrous tours, lawsuits, police busts, horribly nefarious managers, a fake touring version of the band, mysterious black magic witches, drug-induced madness, insane asylums, and attempted murder with an axe. And, no joke—that's just within the band's first two years. Here's just a few of the many things that Cam discusses with Discograffiti in Part 2 of our discussion:A step-by-step reconstruction of the hunt for talent that wound up pulling together the original band; The manifold ways in which Matthew Katz failed them as a manager; How The Summer of Love ironically wound up beating this great band down;A discussion about why Skip's songs of biblical reckoning took a sharp left into novelty-adjacent Weird Al territory!*** This episode includes a cameo appearance by the great JERRY MILLER, who talks with Cam about the band's early days as they began to gel as a unit! There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. The Celebration Celebration: A Tour Through the Tours of Madonna!
Are you a curious kid who wants to know more about Madonna? We thought so!This month, we asked our (heterosexual) pal Kyle Shoemaker to a very special Celebration Celebration challenge: after reading Madonna Biography For Curious Kids: Queen of Pop, we quizzed him using Madonna Quiz Book: 101 Questions To Test Your Knowledge Of Madonna. Did the book prepare him? Does Kyle know his “Material Girl” from his “Madame X?” Give it a listen and find out! It's a chaotic, hilarious, and possibly educational ride you won't want to miss. pWotD Episode 2948: Rick Derringer Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 184,283 views on Wednesday, 28 May 2025 our article of the day is Rick Derringer.Rick Derringer (born Richard Dean Zehringer; August 5, 1947 – May 26, 2025) was an American musician, producer, and songwriter. He gained success in the 1960s with his band, the McCoys. Their debut single, "Hang On Sloopy", became a number-one hit in 1965 and is now regarded as a classic track from the garage rock era. The McCoys had seven songs chart in the top 100, including covers of "Fever" and "Come On, Let's Go". After releasing All American Boy, Derringer established a career as a solo artist. In 1973, Derringer found further success with his song "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo". He also worked extensively with brothers Edgar and Johnny Winter, playing lead and rhythm guitar in their bands and producing all of their gold and platinum records, including Edgar Winter's hits "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride" (both in 1973). Derringer also collaborated with Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, and "Weird Al" Yankovic, producing Yankovic's Grammy Award-winning songs "Eat It" (1984) and "Fat" (1988). Additionally, Derringer produced the World Wrestling Federation's album The Wrestling Album (1985) and its follow-up, Piledriver: The Wrestling Album II (1987). Those albums featured the entrance song for Hulk Hogan, "Real American", (which was initially the theme song of the tag team U. S. Express) and the theme for the Demolition tag team, "Demolition". Derringer also produced three songs from the soundtrack of the 1984 Tom Hanks film Bachelor Party. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:11 UTC on Thursday, 29 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Rick Derringer on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kevin.

This week on Left Hand Right Brain, JD reunites with his old podcast crew—Patrick Scott and Andreas Becerril—for a special episode featuring Paul Karolyi (City Cast Denver), who's hoping to earn his spot as an honorary “Chupacabro.”They reminisce about their chaotic podcast past (Los Chupacabros), debate Star Wars lore, explore fast food loyalties, and dive headfirst into very NSFW hypotheticals. From talking over each other to laughing until they cry, it's a ridiculous and rowdy hang with real podcast chemistry.
John Mulaney's bold case for inducting Weird Al Yankovic into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mulaney credits Weird Al's parody “Smells Like Nirvana” for introducing him to Nirvana's iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” sparking a debate about the parody legend's influence on music and culture. Jeff and Jeremy break down Weird Al's chart-topping success, sold-out tours, and undeniable impact, comparing him to this year's Hall of Fame inductees like The White Stripes, Soundgarden, Outkast, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, and Bad Company. Is Weird Al more deserving than some of these icons? Jeff and Jeremy weigh the pros and cons, reminiscing about Al's hilarious costume changes, radio fake-outs with hits like “Eat It,” and his unique ability to transform serious songs into comedic gold. Tune in for a fun, nostalgic discussion on whether the king of parody belongs in the Hall—and why Mulaney's Rolling Stone shoutout might just make it happen!

This is quite possibly our most Canadian episode to date. We are joined by John Batt of @canada.gov.ca instagram fame. For those of you who don't live in Canada, John is basically Canadian royalty at this point. Topics include the NHL playoffs, Sloan, Wolf Parade, The Junos, Weird Al (not Canadian somehow) and Eastern Canada's love of Jam bands.
This week's very snackable episode has reviews for Another Simple Favor & Mr. Snail's Pick of the Week: UHF.Watch this video on Youtube:https://youtu.be/468A9_F9-dA?si=hlxMT6wodey7e9cgCheck out our entire catalog on Apple podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a-toast-to-film/id1529458133 or Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/371cC1VzdjOchJh5sG0PUw

Weird Al Yankovic joins Samantha Bee to discuss their unique meet-cute, and how their interview came to be due to a scam gone right. Al tells Sam about how he’s actually happy with all the choices he’s made in life except (other than wishing he had bought Apple stock) and yet he agonizes over little decisions—especially when editing music videos. Al explains knowing that his first decision is usually the best one, and why he chooses to live on a tour bus for 3.5 months instead of sleeping in hotels. He reveals that the ultimate dig at him is when people say he’s talented enough to do “real music”, why record companies beg for Christmas albums, and turning down an opportunity to open for Duran Duran at Madison Square Garden. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. And stay up to date with us @LemonadaMedia on X, Facebook, and Instagram. When Weird Al's debut single, "My Bologna," came out, there wasn't really a model for how a parody artist could have any longevity in their career. Yet Al's figured out how to stay popular for over four decades. Ahead of his summer "Bigger and Weirder" tour, he talks with Rachel about staying weird as he ages, parenthood, and his devoted (some might say obsessive) fans. MUSIC Weekend one of Coachella is in the books, and many attendees secured their tickets through an installment plan. Highlights: Weezer slipped in a cover of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" during their Saturday set at Coachella, the same song they covered for 2021's 'Blacklist', an album of Metallica songs performed by different artists. Queen guitarist Brian May popped up from the Coachella stage on Friday night to help singer Benson Boone perform "Bohemian Rhapsody". Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong made a surprise appearance during The Go Gos performance at Coachella on Friday night, one of the first shows from the new wave legends since 2022. Lady Gaga's headlining set Friday night was epic, and some people are already calling it the best in the history of Coachella. Weird Al Yankovic made his Coachella debut . . . joining Yo Gabba Gabba for the classic Muppet track "The Rainbow Connection". During Green Day's set on Saturday night, their pyro accidentally lit a nearby palm tree on fire. Missy Elliott went full-on "Transformers", starting her set as a car, before morphing into herself. Charli XCX brought out some big guns for her set: Troye Sivan, Billie Eilish, and Lorde. A California man was arrested after he allegedly admitted a bomb threat on the Coachella Music Festival. Britney Spears touched down in Mexico the other day for a little vacation and one of her body guards was carrying a BABY DOLL wrapped in a pink blanket as they got off the plane. Van Halen's only number-one song, 1984's “Jump,” has surpassed a billion streams on Spotify. Alex Van Halen says, "Thanks to all the fans for listening!" TV Mickey Rourke's time on the UK's "Celebrity Big Brother" was mercifully short. He's been bounced from the show due to "inappropriate language" and "unacceptable behavior." Blue Origin's first all-female space crew is going into space this morning. "White Lotus" Season 3 star Aimee Lou Wood has been pretty vocal about not liking the attention she gets for her "unique" teeth. So she wasn't very amused when "Saturday Night Live" parodied her looks this weekend. MOVING ON INTO MOVIE NEWS: A new doc, out now, explores the life of John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono after The Beatles' split: 'One to One: John & Yoko' chronicles their move and life in early 70s New York City through a collage of audio recordings and remastered concert footage. RIP: Actor Nicky Katt, from "Boston Public" and "Dazed and Confused", passed away. No word on the cause of death. He was only 54. Director Ted Kotcheff died. He was 94. His films include "First Blood", "Weekend at Bernie's", and the underseen masterpiece "Wake in Fright". AND THAT IS YOUR CRAP ON CELEBRITIES! Learn more about your ad choices.
