Dr. Bickham was the coroner for the small town of Slaughter. For the past few decades, he had looked death in the face - that was what the job required, and he was good at it. Until January 3, 2022.  He was called out to the small white suburban house with the well manicured lawn - he could tell someone had died there judging by the smell. He walked into the living room and there in the center was a couch.  The living room was organized and tidy even, except this couch was at the center covered in feces. The smell was stinging his eyes. He walked closer, and he saw - melted, into the couch the body of a young woman.  She was unclothed, maggots in her hair, rotting flesh eaten off her bones, and she was sitting there with her eyes and mouth open. After 70 pages of Jack Bickham's Scene and Structure we feel we've got a pretty good handle on how to break our stories down into action-packed, disaster-ending scenes and the more contemplative internal sequels that hold the book together. What we've had a harder time with is finding these scene-sequel sequences in the books we own.  So, what gives Bickham? Apparently, there are multiple variations – in chapter nine, Bickham gives us ten options -- to make one's scene and sequel not so obvious. After last episode's deep dive into scene structure, we thought we'd ask a few published novelists and professional editors if they use scene goals in their writing/editing. Then, for our podcast proper, we move beyond the scene basics into more advance concerns, like does that disaster you carefully crafted have the proper scope, immediacy, finality, and does it steer your story in the right direction. But we still need to get that pig back home, and in Chapter 6, Bickham points out (with not one, but two numbered lists) other things that can go wrong with scenes, including not having enough “going wrong.”  Armed with all this knowledge, we apply Bickham's notecard strategy to our own books' scenes. In our debut episode we visit with James Bickham. Most people know James from either his diverse resume or his boisterous presence on social media. We had a blast as he connected the dots from his early days as a school teacher and his start in referring to his time now as one of the top videographers in NEA. We discussed topics of race and even had some fun talking about how social media has played a part in putting more tools on his toolbelt as he navigated through different careers.  

Remember how easy it was to make friends as a kid? Kids can meet other kids on the playground and instantly form friendships that can somehow last a lifetime. Yet, as you grow older, you notice that building and maintaining relationships is not as simple as it used to be. One of the things that contribute to that is that we're all different, and we tend to acknowledge our differences as we grow older. We often feel more at ease when the next person 'gets' us and understands our perspective. The reality is that life would be boring if we were all the same. Additionally, real success, the kind that exists both professionally and socially, is almost impossible without building great relationships with people utterly different from us.
