Humorously exploring unconventional relationships and complexities of polyamory, this novel follows Alejandro's unnamed narrator, a married man navigating heartbreak after his boyfriend abruptly dumps him. Bissinger. We will discuss the book on Wednesday, December 31st, with Joel Anderson as our guest. You can find links to everything we discuss on today's show on The Stacks Website: https://www.thestackspodcast.com/2025/12/17/ep-403-alejandro-varelaConnect with Alejandro: Instagram | Website | Bluesky Connect with The Stacks: Instagram | Threads | Shop | Patreon | Goodreads | Substack | Youtube | SubscribeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Steve Israel - "The Einstein Conspiracy" & Steve Vogel - "A Task Force Called Faith: The Untold Story of the U.S. Army Soldiers Who Fought for Survival at Chosin Reservoir — and Honor Back Home" Chatter rolls into the holidays with Claude, David, Torie, and icon James Grady. They pre-sneak Jim's book out in 2026 and rave about two COB alums, Charlotte Wood and Tevi Troy. Both make major "best of 25" lists. Then it's time for the two Steves. First up is Steve Israel, former Congressman and current author and owner of Theodore's Books. His latest, "The Einstein Conspiracy" is a page turning take based on actual events that pit FBI agents against undercover Nazi operatives. Second Steve up is Steve Vogel, COB alum and author this time of "A Task Force Called Faith," as ever with Vogel, meticulously researched and beautifully written. "Task Force" tells the true and tragic story of Army soldiers who fought in the toughest battle of the Korean War and then decades restoring their rightful place in history.

Crime Data Manipulation in Washington, D.C. Investigations by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the House Oversight Committee revealed that crime statistics were deliberately misclassified by the Metropolitan Police Department. The outgoing police chief, Pamela Smith, allegedly pressured commanders to report lower crime figures, downgrade serious offenses, and even retaliated against those who tried to report accurate data. These actions created a “culture of fear” within the department, undermining public trust. While the conduct did not lead to criminal charges, it raised serious concerns about transparency and governance. Fentanyl Classified as a Weapon of Mass Destruction Former President Trump signed an executive order categorizing fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, citing its catastrophic impact on American lives. The order frames fentanyl as a national security threat, aligning it with nuclear and chemical weapons, and authorizes expanded measures against drug cartels. This initiative is part of a broader military and policy campaign targeting narcotics trafficking, including naval operations and sanctions against Venezuela’s leadership accused of narco-terrorism. Wisdom isn't about what you know — it's what you actually do. Author Ryan Holiday breaks down why virtue requires action, not just good intentions. Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1258What We Discuss with Ryan Holiday:Wisdom isn't knowledge — it's the consistent application of knowledge when nobody's watching. Ryan distinguishes between knowing something intellectually and actually living it. You can memorize every Stoic principle ever written, but if you don't apply those lessons when you're stressed, angry, or tempted, you don't possess wisdom — you just own some expensive bookshelf decorations.Reading is a legitimate superpower that lets you download decades of human experience in hours. Books give you access to conversations with the greatest minds across history — people you could never meet, asking questions you'd never think to ask. It's not about collecting titles; it's about systematically absorbing hard-won lessons from people who already made the mistakes. The Dunning-Kruger effect explains why fools rarely doubt themselves while the wise remain perpetually curious. True wisdom requires intellectual humility — acknowledging the vast ocean of what you don't know. The loudest voices in any room are usually the least informed, while genuine experts understand their knowledge has limits.Ego is wisdom's silent assassin — it convinces you that you've already arrived when the journey never actually ends. Ryan's refusal to obsessively check book rankings isn't false modesty; it's strategic protection against letting external validation corrupt the creative process. Soaking up applause feels good but produces nothing new.Treat learning as a lifelong practice: absorb knowledge as if you'll live forever, but act with the urgency of someone who might not see tomorrow. This ancient Latin wisdom reframes curiosity as non-negotiable and action as time-sensitive — a powerful combination that turns passive information consumption into meaningful, immediate application. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Books are everywhere. They're so common, they're easy to take for granted. But my guest argues that they're worth fully appreciating — because the book isn't just a container for content; it's a revolutionary technology for shaping culture and thought.Joel Miller is a former publishing executive, an editor, a book reviewer, and the author of The Idea Machine: How Books Built Our World and Shape Our Future. Today on the show, Joel argues that to appreciate the power of the book, you have to look at its design: how it's constructed, how we interact with it, and how its evolution transformed the way we think, learn, and communicate. He walks us through a fascinating history of the book as a physical object, from Augustine reading under a fig tree, to medieval monks introducing word spacing and punctuation, to the printing press's world-altering explosion of information. We also explore how novels changed our emotional and social intelligence, how silent reading birthed individual interpretation, and why, even in an age of video and AI, books still matter.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM book-related archivesDying Breed Article: Why I Hate Making (and Watching) Online VideosAoM Article: Why Men Should Read More FictionAoM Article: Fiction for Men as Suggested by Art of Manliness ReadersAoM Podcast #1,057: The Power of the Notebook — The History and Practice of Thinking on PaperConnect With Joel MillerMiller's Book ReviewSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
What if the confusion around fasting and hormones isn't because the science is complicated, but because most people are using the wrong tools for the wrong goals? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Mindy Pelz to get clear about what fasting actually does, when it helps, and when it backfires. This is a conversation about taking ownership of your metabolism instead of chasing trends that don't match your life. We talk about the viral moment from her Stephen Bartlett interview, how misinformation spreads, and what she learned from being at the center of it. Mindy breaks down her six core fasts, why women need a different strategy, and how to adjust your approach if you train hard. We get into cycle-based fasting, fertility, menopause, HRT, toxic load, peptides, creatine, apple cider vinegar, and the rise of GLP-1 drugs. If you've ever wondered how to use fasting without wrecking your energy or performance, this episode will give you a clearer path forward. Dr. Mindy Pelz is a bestselling author, educator, and functional health expert known as the fasting guru. Her books Fast Like a Girl and Age Like a Girl have helped millions of women rethink metabolic health, hormones, and aging, and she has led hundreds of thousands of people through community fasts that focus on real-world results, not quick fixes. This week on The Literary Life podcast, we are dipping back into the archives to bring you a delightful conversation from 2019 in which our Literary Life podcast hosts chatted all about their past year in books, as well as what they hoped to read in the coming year. Cindy, Angelina and Thomas began by sharing some commonplace quotes from books they read in 2019. They discussed their strategies for planning their reading goals and how they curate their "to be read" lists. Each of our hosts also shared some highlights from their year in books. Angelina then introduced The Literary Life Podcast 20 for 2020 Reading Challenge. She talked about how to approach this reading challenge. Medical advances over the past century mean our bodies are living longer than ever. But our brains aren't always keeping pace. Rates of Alzheimer's are rising, and the big question is, why? Emerging science suggests that our brain health in later life is shaped decades earlier, through everyday choices around food, lifestyle, and stress. Today, I'm joined by neurologists Drs. Ayesha and Dean Sherzai, who will share their NEURO plan; a practical guide that you can use today to keep your brain strong tomorrow.
Welcome back to Build Your Bible Habit, where you can listen to a chapter from the practical and life-improving book of Proverbs in under five minutes. People tend to start cutting things out of their lives when overly busy. One of the worst things to cut is your time in the Bible. God gave us instructions for navigating the issues of life, but if we aren't reading His Word, we won't know what He said. You probably have a lot to do, but even if you don't, it is still a good idea to commit your plans to God and ask Him to establish your thoughts. Here's a related reminder verse to consider: "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." Ask Me How I Know: Multifamily Investor Stories of Struggle to Success
High achievers often feel the quiet ache of “I don't feel like myself anymore.” This episode explores why success can lead to identity drift and emotional exhaustion — and how to gently return to yourself through Identity-Level Recalibration.High achievers rarely talk about the subtle moment they begin to lose themselves — long before burnout, long before breakdown, long before anything looks wrong on the outside. This episode uncovers the quiet emotional exhaustion beneath high performance: identity drift, role confusion, decision fatigue, and the pressure to stay “on” even when your internal world feels scattered.Drawing from psychology (neuroception, interoception, identity performance) and the lived experience of countless high-capacity humans, Julie Holly reveals why your nervous system keeps adapting into older versions of you — and how that disconnect creates the ache of success without fulfillment. You'll learn:• why neuroception keeps you bracing even when the room is safe• how last week's interoception work helps you interpret what your body is saying• what “identity performance” looks like in real, everyday moments• the emotional cost of being the reliable one, the steady one, the strong one• why high achievers don't lose themselves — they adapt to survive expectations• how the triangle of interoception, neuroception, and identity performance keeps you “managed” instead of present• why this isn't burnout — it's identity misalignment• the first gentle step back toward your true selfMicro Recalibration (for individuals + teams)Ask yourself:“Where am I editing myself to match expectations that no longer apply?”Then notice:• What part of me gets quiet?• What part of me steps forward instead?• What would 2% more truth sound like in those moments?Team Extension:“What unspoken expectations shape how we show up — and what would shift if we valued presence over performance?”If this episode gave you language you've been missing, please rate and review the show so more high-capacity humans can find it. Rob first encountered Matthew Lordeau around twenty-five years ago while they both were employed at the Orvis store in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The store was quite lively during that time, and all the staff tried to fish together whenever they could. Rob doesn't remember going fishing with Matt. Even though they went their separate ways long ago, they have maintained their connection through meetings at The Fly Fishing Show and interactions online through social media. Since their days at Orvis, Matt has tied the knot and is now the father of a lively brood of children, ranging from young nymphs to instars. His experiences in fishing, writing, and travel have motivated Matt to launch his very own podcast, Casting Across. On this podcast, listeners can hear him talk about the individuals, locations, and elements involved in the quest for fish with a focus on the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania. Rob was eager to chat with Matt about his passion for both contemporary and traditional fly fishing literature. This marks Matt's second time on the show as a podcast host. You can catch him in various episodes from the Somerset and Edison Fly Fishing Shows. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sheryl Ramstad's story is nothing short of extraordinary. After surviving a catastrophic plane crash with less than a 1% chance of survival, Sheryl's life was forever changed. What began as her first solo flight at age 29 became a harrowing journey through life-threatening burns, multiple surgeries, overwhelming grief, and two years of excruciating rehabilitation. But this isn't just a survival story—it's a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the unbreakable human spirit. In this powerful conversation, Sheryl shares how she transformed unimaginable trauma into a life of purpose, service, and adventure. From shifting her mindset from "Why me?" to "What's next?" to supporting burn survivors in Peru, going back to school at 62, raising three children, becoming a grandmother, and even climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro—Sheryl embodies what it means to live fully, bravely, and without regrets. With her first book "Living Life Full Throttle: Surviving, Serving, and Summiting" published in January 2025, Sheryl reflects on a decades-long journey of healing, reinvention, and choosing courage over fear. Her story will inspire you to embrace challenges, pursue new beginnings at any age, and live life full throttle. The Erika Kirk Candace Owens meeting was framed publicly as a private and productive discussion. What followed were two post-meeting statements that reveal very different perspectives on what that meeting achieved. In this episode of Never A Truer Word, Jack Fox applies Statement Investigation to the language used after the meeting, focusing on how each woman framed the outcome rather than what they claimed emotionally.Erika Kirk announced the meeting first and defined its boundaries in advance. After the meeting, she described it as productive but offered no detail about outcomes or next steps.Candace Owens, by contrast, described what was discussed, what she believed was clarified, and indicated an intention to share more publicly. Her language reflects explanation, resolution, and forward momentum. The tension between the two has centred on the murder of Charlie Kirk, where Candace Owens has publicly challenged the official narrative. That unresolved disagreement provides important context for why this meeting mattered and why the post-meeting language is so revealing. This episode is not about intent or motive. It is about what people signal when they believe a matter is finished and when they do not.Want more from Never A Truer Word? Abrahamic religion is being used to bring about a holy war in the name of, depending on who you ask, one God or another. The conflict between Christians and Muslims, inflamed by agents like Jake Lang, is only one part of a much larger plan that involves the psychotic and paranoid delusions of rabbinical Judaism hell-bent on destroying gentiles, even goy-Jews who dare step out of line. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements.
